We dined at Chapman's with my in laws recently and overall had a good experience. However, due to the incredibly inaccurate wait and rudeness/attitude of one of the hostesses, I was debating whether to give this spot 3 or 4 stars. Thankfully, the food was great as was our waitress.
I called a few weeks ago to make a reservation and they don't take reservations, totally fine - I get some places do that. I asked if there would be a wait as long as we got there on a Saturday by 5pm, they said no, we would be fine. We get there at 5pm and of course there is a 20-25 minute wait. This was also totally fine. We went to the wine cellar a few shops down, and enjoyed a glass of wine. Over 35 minutes had passed, and I didn't get the text notification, so we walked back. I get there and they tell me we are next up. Eventually, 20-25 minutes turned into 50-55 minutes, and this was not fine. One of the hostesses tried to tell me I was wrong and I pulled out my phone to show her when I received the text confirmation originally. I worked in restaurants on and off for 10-15 years and telling a customer a wait is 20 minutes when it is almost an hour, not acceptable. We also had a concert to attend so didn't have an hour to wait. If we would have been told an hour to begin with, also fine, but that was not the case. We could have found another spot. Which made this worse was one of the hostesses was incredibly rude, I get you are a teenager and probably not what you wanted to do on your Saturday night (hey, neither did I), but you are in the service industry, just like I was. Learn to be respectful of your customers, especially when your customers are not being disrpectful to you, and YOU made a mistake or a miscalculation. I stayed respectful and even apologized for asking so much, but I was assertive, and she did not like this. However, the other hostess that was with her was very kind and apologetic, and understanding of the frustration and their very inaccurate time estimate. She was so kind that at the end, I wanted to thank her for her kindness and trying to finally accommodate us as quickly as possible, but could not find her. It really just goes to show that customer service/being organized can make a difference on a dining experience, or really any experience for that matter.
All of that being said, after over an hour we finally sat down. Thankfully, our experience instantly improved. Our waitress, although busy, was incredibly attentive and friendly. The food was pretty amazing too. We started with the crawfish fries and these were delicious! A creamy sauce with fresh crawfish served over fries, we had the sauce on the side and dipped them. I would order this dish 10x over. For entrees, my husband got the fish tacos, and I got the chicken fajitas. Both of these were delicious! My in laws got the fried halibut and shrimp tacos which also looked good. I was really impressed with the food, very quality and tasty in a very casual and cozy atmosphere.
Despite the initial experience not being great, it did turn around when we finally sat down, and the food was delicious. Not only this, it's in adorable downtown Southern Pines. I would absolutely give this cozy place another shot, but I also recommend management discussing the importance of professionalism, kindness, and organization. Those three things will get you further in life if you practice them.
