"If you’re into Southeast Asian comfort food found at hawker centers and night markets in places like Singapore and Malaysia, but not so much into 20-hour flights, head to Chard. This small spot near Union Square from the Laut team has some seating at a narrow counter with a couple of stools—but we mostly like to come here for takeout when it’s a Tuesday and cooking is out of the question. Nothing on the menu costs over $15, and the Api Api Burger is an essential order. That burger is actually a spicy fried chicken sandwich with pickled papaya and carrots, and it has a ton of heat. We also like the soy-braised noodles with roast pork and wontons, but no matter what you order, get the fries dusted with a terrific lime seasoning as a side. As you wait for your food, you’ll see people walk in and disappear behind an unmarked door like they’re on their way to Narnia. Don’t mind them—they’re just heading up to Singlish, Chard’s upstairs bar. Food Rundown photo credit: Protechnyc.com Api Api Burger The name may throw you off, but this fried chicken thigh sandwich is absolutely worth ordering. The more bites you take, the more the heat level builds. Literal sweating happens every time we get this thing, but we still can’t stop eating it. Pro tip: Throw the shrimp chips that come on the side in your oven for a few minutes. Singlish Fries These thick-cut fries come sprinkled with a slightly spicy and tangy powder that’s reminiscent of the seasoning used for zaab chicken wings at some Thai restaurants. Although good on their own, the fries are even better when you dip them in the sweet aioli made with salted eggs. photo credit: Emily Schindler Wonton Mee When we need some carbs, we love to get these stir-fried, soy-braised noodles with steamed wontons, roast pork, and sambal. If you pour the cup of white pepper broth that comes on the side into your bowl, you can turn this dish into a noodle soup. photo credit: Emily Schindler Roti John (Lost In Translation) You’ll taste a mix of strong flavors in this open-faced sandwich. It comes with minced curry beef, an omelet layer, drizzled sweet chili sauce, Kewpie mayo, and crispy fried onions—all on top of a pressed burger bun. After a few beers, this is the first thing we want to order." - Kenny Yang

"The wonton mee ($12) at Chard — a narrow takeout joint with a menu of “Asian soul cooking” just steps from Union Square — was bound to be a standout dish for me because it features two things I can never eat enough of: dumplings and noodles. A generous amount of soy-braised noodles served as the perfect foil to slices of sweet char siu, delicate wontons, and a dab of spicy sambal. I’d sip the side of broth, which was full of nasal-clearing white pepper, between bites of the springy egg noodles. It’s the type of comforting dish that has made chef Salil Mehta’s restaurants (Laut, Laut Singapura, and Wau) popular across NYC." - Eater Staff

Juicy and solid chicken sandwich. Noodles were okay, nothing spectacular, although proportions seems off a bit. The amount of noodles seemed to overwhelm the other elements which were more sparse. Fries were the perfect balance of crisp and potato, didnt love the spicy mayo but the salted egg aioli was pretty phenomenal. The shrimp chips definitely something to pass on. White pepper soup was delicious but salty. Good for a quick and decent meal and would probably go back to try something else but didn’t love it.

We got takeout from Chard soon after it opened. The menu is small and dishes are hit or miss. The chicken biryani was very good and the api api burger tasted good but the texture was pretty tough. Overall, my main frustration was with the singlish fries (pictured), which were basically a pile of fries that came with a side of dipping sauce, but costed $10. For that price, we expected more. I’m excited to see this restaurant grow and adapt its menu, though, because the flavors are there! It just needs some iterating.

Cozy spot with an excellent menu of tasty goodies from across Southeast Asia! Perfect for a quick bite/snack alone or with a companion, or get takeout to enjoy at a nearby park. Friendly team too!

Teeny tiny counter with south east Asian eats from the folks behind Laut, barely 2 stools, so probably best for takeout. Visited during soft-open, the staff was very friendly and chatty. Got the Api Api burger, nicely fried chicken with some pickle and pineapple, but they forgot the shrimp chips. Sounds like they are planning to open a tiny speakeasy upstairs too.

4.5 stars rounded up. Good, flavorful food of a not so common cuisine in NYC. Definitely try it if you live or work in the area.

Food was awful. We got the fried chicken (Popeyes better), the roti (which isn’t roti, it’s just potato bun), and the noodles. The dumplings that came with the noodles were probably the worst I’ve ever had. The skin was mushy and falling apart. The meat tasted sour which I really really hope is because it was over seasoned with vinegar. We couldn’t finish the food. Too bad. I noticed this place even before they opened and was hoping they’d be good. Also, the floor is oily. You walk in and your shoes stick to the floor.

I tried this place for lunch recently. Nice small restaurant inside a historic building. I ordered the Api Api burger and enjoyed it, but I admit I thought it would be better. The menu looks pretty creative though, so I'll probably be back again to try something different.

Beware, lots of food items not actually available/served! Came here excited to try this place but a total bummer because they weren't serving 2 out of the 4 items they have on their online menu (the smashburger and chicken biryani). Considering how they already have a very small menu to begin with, it was sad to they don't bother keeping their online menu up to date. Not worth the trek unless you decide to call ahead.
