The 26 Best Restaurants in Anchorage, Alaska | Eater

"This casual bakery and lunch/dinner counter in Midtown Anchorage serves some of the city’s best Chinese food. Among the menu favorites are the translucent crystal dumplings, mu shu pork wraps, and the sticky rice with chicken and pork steamed in lotus leaves. The menu expands with additional dim sum on Saturdays. In the bakery, look for barbecue pork buns, egg tarts, red bean cream pie, and light-as-air birthday cakes." - Julia O'Malley

Google
Excellent customer service, fast, clean great atmosphere. I got a braise beef soup, mocha cake and shu mai. The soup was alright it was lacking some flavors it tasted bland to me, the cake was perfect moist and soft, it wasn’t too sweet it was just perfect and the shu mai was good. I got the pork and shrimp and it was good. My second time here and it’s always packed, I’ll need to try more food on the menu’s. I’ll go back for another visit

Came in for lunch with friends, and we all enjoyed our experience. Food was flavorful, and the textures were perfect. The environment is very clean, and the food came out at a good pace. I got a desert to go but it wasn't to my taste, it wasn't sweet at all. Not a complaint, but just a warning if you're expecting a sweet treat.

Google
Ordered the Bean curd roll, spicy seafood noodle soup, sesame salad with chicken and beef chow mein. The bean curd roll was so tasty and was amazing! The beef chow mein was also noteworthy! However, the sesame salad was too sweet, though the chicken wasn’t bad. The spicy seafood noodle soup lacked flavor and was not super spicy. Also got eggs tarts, but they were not super flaky… This restaurant is still pretty nice and is very affordable.

Google
The food was decent. I got the BBQ beef short ribs—chewy, as you'd expect from this cut, but they could’ve used a bit more flavor to really shine. The rice and veggie mix on the side was fresh and tasty, which helped round out the plate. The place has more of a food court vibe, and the table I sat at was a little sticky. The staff seemed a bit tired but still friendly. Overall, it didn’t quite live up to the hype for me, but I’d come back to try a different dish and give it another shot.

I came in a busy time for lunch but the line was quick so I have no problem with it. First thing first you have to do is look for the menus they put on their wall and order it from cashier. You have to do it quickly because the people behind you keep coming

Google
We chose this place on a whim and the confusion on the bakery and chinese food combo. We are thoroughly and delightfully pleased with our choice. The food is delicious and fresh. Tgere wasn't a long wait between ordering and getting food. The place has a longvquick moving line and quick customer turn around. Also 2 picky eaters found food tgey liked and ravenous devoured!

Google
The food came out fast and was hot. However for what it is it kind of seems expensive. $80 for 2 adults and a kid (3 meals and 2 soup). Flavor was lacking in some areas. There was a lot of pieces of meat that weren’t good in the Mongolian beef, like fatty or too chewy. Also, we were hungry again soon afterwards. People rave about this place but tbh I feel like it’s just ok.

Google
4 stars It’s hard to find Chinese food in Anchorage but Charlie’s bakery provided a wide variety of options including fried rice, chow mien, and dim sums. We ordered beef noodle and noodle soup with pork chops. I liked their pork chops- well cooked and finely seasoned. The noodle soup was not thick and a bit oily so I didn’t finish it. They also served some desserts such as cheesecakes and chocolate rolls. The food came in HUGE portion, so you can share dishes or finish in two meals.

Yelp
Best Chinese food I've ever had. They are constantly revising and making old recipes better. They're not the typical Chinese restaurant where they slack on their food they genuinely care and the owners definitely reflected in their food. I highly recommend the house fried rice

Yelp
A number of people had told me to go here for lunch, and I'm so glad I finally did. It's funny that a bakery is mostly known Chinese food, and that's what we were there for as there is no good Chinese food where we live, and I'd also struck out ordering from other places in Anchorage. This place is very basic, it's not a place for a long romantic dinner, it's about the food. We each ordered an enrtree but I also ordered Schezuan shrimp wontons off the dim sum menu and they turned out to be the highlight of the meal. You could really taste the shrimp, and Schezuan sauce was outstanding. If they sold it by the bottle I would never stop buying it. I put what was left in the bowl on the rice that came with my entree because it felt like a crime to just leave it there. My entree was beef short ribs. It came with rice and veggies. The ribs were seared and seasoned nicely. It was a bit messy as many pieces are bone-in and you pretty much have to eat with your hands, but napkins are plentiful. My wife had the crispy noodle with seafood and pork, and shared a bit with me. The noodles were good, the meat was tender and tasty, the shrimp were perfectly cooked. A good experience all the way.

Yelp
Been on the hunt for my go-to Chinese spot here in Anchorage and I think I may have found my place. The steamed black cod was absolutely divine - cooked perfectly and seasoned in such a way that it made the black cod's delicate flavor shine. The main dish came with sizeable portions of pork fried rice and veggies as sides. The fried rice was so delicious and I can attest that the leftovers were just as good the next day for lunch. Can't wait to try the dim sum next time!

Yelp
Overall 3.25 Stars After a filling and satisfying Japanese dinner, we wanted to finish the night with a dessert. Review will be shortly posted on the Japanese restaurant. Charlie's Bakery is a bit odd and quirky; just like me. It is a Chinese restaurant that serves Asian inspired dishes but bakes and serves Western bakery goods; pies, cakes, bread (baguettes, croissants, rolls, etc) The place is part of a strip mall on the corner of C Street and Northern Lights. When you enter in the non-discript place, you are met with an open concept design with many tables and chairs, glass counters and shelves to view the baked goods and four 60" TVs which display the Chinese dishes. The baked goods are all ready in viewed through the glass counters and open shelves. The place is not fancy at all. It is well lit and bright cuz the color of white is used; kinda' like a bakery place. Instead of a Chinese restaurant where the mood lighting is darker and the furniture aren't made of rich wood or red vinyl. There are two cashiers where you can order the food. After ordering, sit down, wait for the food and watch the eclectic people around you. When order is ready, your lighted "thing-a-ma-jig" will vibrate. 3.5 Stars - Food We ordered two desserts to share. 3.5 Stars - slice of Pineapple Cheesecake. If you are pineapple fan, you will like this one. It is loaded within the cheesecake. The cheesecake itself was dense but still had a fluffy and creamy texture. The whipped cream on top was firm and there was a sugary sliced Pineapple on top. The taste wasn't overly sweet but I thought it was missing something but couldn't my finger on it. However, the girls thought it was wonderful and delicious. I got two bites before it disappeared. 3.25 - 3.5 Stars - Green Matcha and Red Bean. Again, if you are a fan of matcha and red bean, you will like this dessert. It isn't too sweet. The cream is airy, light fluffy. I believe it has a hint of vanilla and red bean in the cream. The crust was made with red bean flour and the taste was mild. It was evenly covered w the powder green matcha and it was the main flavor of the dish. The perfect bite is to scoop all three flavors into one bite. The mocha flavor can be overpowering at times. Balance it out with milk or coffee. The girls gave it 3.25 while my star rating was 3.5. After having only two of many desserts, I will definitely come back for the Chinese dishes, variety of breads (come early for the bread) cuz they sell out quickly and the desserts.

Yelp
From appetizer to dessert Charlie's is your most-stop-shop for authentic Chinese food. We tried everything including soup, stir fry, bao, dumplings, and tiramisu. The service was helpful, fast, and the food recommendations were ALL fantastic. Thank you to the team at Charlie's for a wonderful dinner night!

Yelp
I love Charlie's and I'm pretty sure the rest of Anchorage does too. It doesn't matter what time of day I visit, they are crazy busy. It always smells incredibly welcoming. The food is tasty, whether it's desserts, lunch Asian pastries or hot meals. You can't go wrong.

Yelp
Ordered the sesame chicken, fried rice, and wontons. We've also had the Mongolian beef. All were good. We would ordered the sesame, mongo, and wontons again.

Yelp
Everything here is SO GOOD. I was meeting a friend for lunch here and while waiting ended up ordering a ham and cheese roll because I couldn't wait to eat lol. It was tasty and light and is probably even better fresh out of the oven. For my meal I had the soy sauce marinated pork chops, which was hearty and filling. The meat was tender with a slight crisp, and the rice steaming hot. I absolutely inhaled the whole plate. Charlie's is also known around town for their desserts. On a second trip a week later my fiancé and I had a Boston Cream Pie and Irish cream cheesecake. They were light and the perfect amount of sweetness. They had a lot of business on a Saturday afternoon with people dining in and picking up orders to go. Sometimes it gets busy and all tables are full, but the food is worth the wait. You won't be disappointed here!
google avatar

Melody K.

Yelp
Charlie's hot meals are amazing and I love it. We got the beef noodle soup, pan fried soup beef noodles and pork dumplings. Each was amazing and addictive. We came late and missed out on the pastries, but more reason to come out. Customer service is great, fast and easy - a little loud with the kitchen being right there, but all in all - it was a great way to end the evening

Yelp
Charlie's Bakery is a Chinese restaurant and bakery, with a lot of traditional menu items and baked goods. They have plenty of seating. I almost jokingly describe how they are one of the cleanest Chinese bakeries I've ever seen, ok, I'm only half joking. My wife and I were in town for a trip and found this place through online searching. We went during lunchtime and it seemed to be pretty full which was a good sign. I ordered their braised beef noodle soup (spicy), and I ordered their spicy wontons. My wife had a seafood noodle soup. The food came out in a timely manner, they brought the order to our table. The noodles were standard egg noodles but the braised beef and the broth was really good. I'd go there again.

Yelp
I cannot say enough! We had seen this place via a video on TikTok when coming through Anchorage for a cruise. We literally had the best meal we've ever had at a Chinese establishment. The food is so fresh presentation is beautiful. The Chinese pastries are incredible. Don't miss out when you're in Anchorage!

Tracy S.

Yelp
Just Delicious. The bakery is amazing so make sure to grab a dessert for later because you will be stuffed!

Yelp
Super good Chinese food! The service is quick and we've enjoyed each time we go or order take out.

Yelp
I used to frequent this place so much in high school when I worked at the KFC, that was located at the other end of the strip mall. We visited most recently, to pickup dinner on a Saturday evening. We made it in before their dinner rush, thankfully. Food, flavor, quality, and portions here, remain the same. Our food came out fast, fresh, and hot. My only complaint is that my "house fried rice," was really only "shrimp fried rice" which of course, isn't the same. We appreciated Charlie's' sauce section (chili and sriracha especially). This visit, I noticed canned soda and Hawaiian sun juices were available, in addition to their fountain soda options. Not sure if they've always had these available, but we appreciated it this time around for sure.

Yelp
Charlie's Bakery continues to satisfy. Went in at 8pm, they mentioned they'd be closing at 8:30, we ordered and food was out starting in 5 minutes. Mongolian beef, sesame chicken, both sub chicken fried rice for a small up charge (worth it), har gow, pork siu mai, and pork Szechwan spicy wontons. Fast, friendly, delicious. Order at the counter, pictures of food are on the wall. Soda, water, soy sauce, & chili sauces are self-serve. Chopsticks are crap, I will bring my own next time . Still 10/10
google avatar

Norma S.

Yelp
I love the food (and service) here! It's more like a fast food type of ordering where the menu is hanging on the wall (with accompanying pictures and prices). You walk up to the register and order. If you dine in (there's not many tables but seemingly just enough), they give you a number to put on your table and bring out your order as it's ready. Also, oddly, if you need a cake or something else, they have some available for purchase or special order. I can't vouch for the bakery but the Asian cuisine is delicious and reasonably priced.
google avatar

Grace P.

Yelp
I can't recommend Charlie's enough. The service is always fantastic. Def get there early because it is so popular that they run out of things early & just to avoid the lines. I love the little buns behind the dash register. They are so so good. All of their food is amazing. I've never had something I don't like here.
google avatar

Angie W.

Yelp
Been craving Dim Sum and was told this is the only spot in town. Menu is very limited and prices were steep for what we're accustomed to. But as I just mentioned, only spot in town. We had multiple places we were eating at so we didn't order too much. The bean curds were good but at almost $12, I'm not sure. The Har Gow were big and juicy. The spicy wontons were our favorite.
google avatar

Patricia H.

Yelp
Love the food here. I've only been twice but everything Was amazing. The service is great. You get a buzzer and when it's ready you either pick Up to go, or to eat there if you can find a table. Our food came Up faster then what we thought We got home and we enjoyed everything we got.
google avatar

Sarah A.

Yelp
Although we'd researched this spot for breakfast/brunch bakery, we first came for dinner, noted that the bakery was almost totally sold out, and made a mental note that if we wanted to try their baked goods, we'd have to come again and arrive early! For dinner we enjoyed Egg Rolls, Shrimp Won Ton Soup with Noodles, and the Braised Beef Noodle Soup, all of which were delicious--some of the most delicate won tons I've ever had! When we came back another day for brunch, we sampled a few buns: Sausage, Egg, & Cheese; BBQ Pork; and Red Bean. The BBQ Pork was my favorite of the two savory buns--savory and lightly sweet--and you can never go wrong with red bean buns! Would definitely return if we're ever back in Anchorage, and if I was a local I'd be a regular for sure!

Yelp
Hot spicy beef is 5 Stars for me. Their pastries are 10/10. I recommend the vanilla horn and the coconut bread. Super yummy. Great service and simple restaurant. With a modern setting with modern music playing.
google avatar

Lindsey P.

Yelp
I recently went to Charlie's Bakery after not having been for a few years (shame on me!) and it was great. I got sesame chicken, spicy pork wontons, and a chocolate eclair. The wontons had a good amount of spice, in my opinion. The sesame chicken is perfectly sweet and crispy. The eclair was really big and delicious and not overly sweet. This is one of the best places in town for Chinese food. I plan on branching out next time and trying the crispy noodles and scallion pancakes!
google avatar

Sharon O.

Yelp
Been here a few times and it is always so crowded, because it's really good! I will try to avoid the Saturday rush though, because I ended up waiting for food for almost 40 min... The food itself is very authentic. The dimsum items they offer only on Saturdays are delicious (love the sesame balls and mifen noodles). Pricing is also not bad. The buns are not the best in the area; I would get their dishes rather than their baked goods. The restaurant is pretty clean. The only downside is when they get very busy, the tables get slightly neglected and are not bused in a timely manner. They're just a little short staffed.

Tim R.

Yelp
Bakery hiding a truly great Chinese restaurant. Authentic and the bakery is killer too.

Thomas L.

Yelp
SIOPAO OMG good. Food has been found to be delicious. Desserts are absolutely perfect. Everything is five star with a very well presented price. Atmosphere is well very well lit with a great hosting staff.
google avatar

Sophie S.

Yelp
Delicious food- quick and kind service and reasonably priced! Highly recommend!! My husband and I finished everything everything was yummy! I recommend the Mongolian beef and beef noodle soup!
google avatar

Ryan J.

Yelp
I admit that I LOVE the food here. I always eat at the restaurant. This is my first time picking it up after work, and the portions were literally half of what you get dining in, for the same price. I know it won't matter to them but I'm done with them. Only get one chance to rip me off. Sad!!
google avatar

Erica C.

Yelp
Meh the food wasn't as great as I remember it to be. I tried a new item - Har Gow and was super disappointed. For some reason they added pork to the filling??! Har Gow is supposed to be shrimp dumplings. The skin was also not good. Mushy and fell apart really easily. The bbq pork puffs also lacked a lot of flavor. The sticky rice also wasn't as flavorful as it used to be. The only consistent item was the spicy wontons - those were still pretty good and the duck as well. They renovated the inside and upgraded their tables. Looks a little nicer inside!
google avatar

Catherine W.

Yelp
It is called Charlie's bakery but it is more like a restaurant. It also serves noodles, rice dishes and dim sum. We ordered braised beef noodles soup and crispy noodles with chicken. Braised beef noodles was a little spicy. Soup was flavorful and beef was melt-in-your-mouth tender. The noodles was a bit hard probably because it was frozen but that didn't bother me with broth and noodles this good. Crispy noodles was also delicious. Noodles was really crispy and I like that they put so much vegetables there. Didn't feel greasy at all even though it's fried. We went at noon and it was really crowded but service was speedy. For drinks, they have coffee, tea, soda and iced tea.

Yelp
Lunch At Charlie's again. Busy as usual. Great food at reasonably prices, wonderful made on site gourmet desserts and breads. Parking available. If you like Chinese food you can't go wrong eating here or picking up takeout. I am partial the their Spicy Seafood Noodle Soup so I am enjoying that. Great favored broth, well cooked vegetables and seafood. An ample quantity served hot and spicy. The broth is a tomato base with spices that I wish I new for sure but I think they are garlic, pepper, chili sauce and others. The vegetables are cabbage, green onions, white onions, carrots. The seafood was medium shrimp, shell and tail off, calamari or squid, and mussels 2. About 3 cups of cooked large noodles. They have an assortment of canned drinks and fountain drinks. The drinks from the fountain and iced tea are self serve with refills allowed. Desserts are displayed in a case and breads and rolls on selfs near the order counter. You can order them to have with your meal or for takeout when you order your meal or return to the line to order afterwards for eat-in or takeout. Cash and credit cards accepted. No military or senior discount. They also have soup and sandwiches that you can order separately from the Chinese menu board for eat in or take out. One choice includes a dessert. They twelve special dishes that are only available on Saturday on the menu board. Everyone orders from the front counter and then they will bring you your order to eat in or take out.

Yelp
The service and quality were amazing. Used this cake for a last minute proposal idea and it came out amazing !
google avatar

Yelp
Good place for lunch for either pick up or seated. I have been eating there for decades. But get there early before the noon rush if you eat in, seating goes quick and it's all first come, first serve. Bakery items are delish!
google avatar

Ai L.

Yelp
Glad it's back open on lunar new year! Year of the tiger. Some remodel inside Food is still delicious. But very busy
google avatar

Dave V.

Yelp
Mongolian Beef and fried rice slaps. It's super busy right at noon. Get there early or there won't be tables. Parking is great, kid friendly. I highly recommend.

Yelp
Your buns are probably cold and icy if you live in AK, but not at Charlie's Bakery. Here they are hot, juicy and steamy, ready for you to sink your teeth into, umm, so goood. In search of the perfect BBQ Pork Steam Bun? Look no further. We have tried steam buns all over the lower 48, from China Towns in NYC, LA, San Fran and Chicago. Who knew that we would have to spend 1400.00 on round trip tickets to find the perfect buns all the way up here. #8 on the menu. May I suggest 10 of them to go at 4.95 a piece. Even with tax you will walk out with 5 meals. Thats cheaper than 1 sit down restaurant in Anchorage for 2 people. Moist, plastic wrapped to hold in the sweet steamy juice, excellent immediately and best sitting right here fresh, but exceptional left over and reheated. We had several other items on the menu, but the buns are for me. I think you will like them too. This place is always busy. Hard to find seating most of the time. The desserts are awesome, chinese food is listed on the wall by number as most places are. We have had several different things here and all was good. The BBQ pork Steam Bun is my favorite. Shove these juicy buns in your face and get a taste. Excellent!

A. Nick H.

Yelp
Great food and friendly staff. My favorite place for lunch! I love the choices given, and the amount to choose from. This is the reason I never get tired of their cuisine!
google avatar

Lucy W. H.

Yelp
The best thing we ordered was the sticky rice. The shrimp dumpling soup broth was too salty and we had to throw it out. What a waste. Ate the dumplings by themselves. Everyone raves about the place so we came in with high expectations
google avatar

Tommy J.

Yelp
Best Chinese in Anchorage! Good size menu, the service is quick and staff is very friendly. I highly recommend this place.
google avatar

Uyen N.

Yelp
This place was slightly packed when we got there. Food kinda lacks flavor, to us, except for the moonglian beef over rice. Our least favorite is probably the noodle soup, it just tastes a little off.
google avatar

Jolynn L.

Yelp
Food was amazing, fresh and delicious! Service was fast, staff were friendly! Though it was busy as we arrived at least an hour after they opened, it was still very relaxing! Very clean, wait was not long at all even though the line was out the door. The food was well worth the wait in line. We didn't take a picture of all the food we ordered, but they were all so delicious! When we come back to visit again, we will definitely stop here. Wish Fairbanks had this.
google avatar

Arvi G.

Yelp
My family and I love Charlie's Bakery! The chocolate eclairs are my favorite in town, and their mocha cake is our go to for every birthday. As for their restaurant side, I love their spicy pork wontons! I used to love getting the crispy pork belly also, but it's been a bit inconsistent (sometimes it's perfectly cooked, sometimes it's too salty). Get ready for a long line always because this place is so popular, but thankfully the service is so fast!
google avatar

Emily S.

Yelp
Awesome cakes! Cheesecake was delicious. They also have food ( dine in or takeout) delicious and great prices. My fav is the duck with rice and veggies.
google avatar

Glen Y.

Yelp
Stopped by for late lunch and there was still a line. Well I guess for great tasting food you would wait too, which I did. A small to medium sized dining area but well maintained and clean. IThis place is recommended for great food and cakes.
google avatar

Elena F.

Yelp
Just tried their sweet taro buns and they're so good! They're not too sweet, but they're more of a mild sweet. They've added a few new things to their menu since I last was in there. I found their cake to be super delicious. It's butter cream and tastes like whip cream. It's good to have every once in a while. I love their boba tea and every other weekend will go out of my way to walk in and order one. They only serve it on Saturday's so it's a little treat to look forward to every once in a while.
google avatar

Lydia S.

Yelp
Love this place. Every special occasion we order our cakes from here. Clean, non-greasy, easy on your stomach, authentic Chinese food. I find myself always coming back to try different things from their menu and it never disappoints!
google avatar

W. James S.

Yelp
Best Chinese food in Anchorage, Alaska! Also, we use Charlie's bakery for any type of celebration that requires a cake. Probably one of the best cakes you'll in your life.
google avatar

Britt R.

Yelp
Ordered the shrimp wonton soup, no noodles, size small. Saw the container and thought I wouldn't be full but it was a content amount. Good flavor for broth and there were 5+ wontons in the soup that packed a shrimp punch. Their scoop your amount chili oil was tasty! Will be back - there was a bunch of food that looked delicious
google avatar

Mel J.

Yelp
The food is yummy. And I was so excited to order dinner from here tonight in honor of my mom's birthday. So we get a brown take out box. When I open my eggplant with pork, the portion is small enough for me to eat the entire meal, which I typically have leftovers. It almost looks like they stole a small portion of someone's plate, who ordered at the restaurant. I mean it would be acceptable as a lunch portion. But definitely not for the price it is. Sad and disappointed. So, lesson learned. Do not order take out from here. Endure the line and the wait and sit in the dining area to eat your meal.

Dale W.

Yelp
I'm a big dim sum fan and Charlie's had great reviews, so we had to try it. There was a line of people waiting for the doors to open. "There's a good sign" we said. Everything was wonderful, we even took several pastries to go! Highly recommend!
