25 Iconic Dishes That Define Rome - Rome - The Infatuation

"Cesare Al Pellegrino is the younger sibling of Da Cesare Al Casaletto, an institution that’s been whipping up classic Roman dishes for over 50 years. At Pellegrino, this tradition continues with dishes like rigatoni con coda alla vaccinara, where succulent, slow-braised beef arrives submerged in rich and tangy tomato stew. After trying the dish, it’s impossible not to crave—so be ready to explain to your butcher back home why you suddenly need to buy oxtail every week. Lunch is the move here: their floor-to-ceiling windows allow ample sunshine to flood in while you’re flooding your body with pasta and beef." - annie replogle

Checchino Dal 1887 - Review - Testaccio - Rome - The Infatuation

"Pajata is veal that still has its mother’s milk in it, which is proof that Roman cuisine can turn a dish that makes you actively think about biology into something incredible. It arrives in a bowl of mezze maniche pasta, slow-cooked for hours in a rich tomato and pecorino sauce. The meat has a ricotta-like texture in a natural casing. When you cut into it, the veal releases a creamy richness that melts into the sauce, adding its signature bold, gamey flavor. Checchino Dal 1887, a Testaccio-based restaurant with a wine cellar beneath, excels at pajata—not just in the pasta, but also grilled and dressed with a squeeze of lemon. photo credit: Maela Bonafede photo credit: Maela Bonafede photo credit: Maela Bonafede Pause Unmute RESERVE A TABLE" - Annie Replogle

The 42 Best Restaurants in Rome

"Let's be clear: The menu at Checchino dal 1887 is offal-tastic. So if eating animal innards isn't your thing, either head somewhere else or go for the vegetarian menu. Kick things off with the veal head served with citrus peel, then move on to the beef tripe cooked in pecorino, mint, and tomato sauce. Vegetarians will love the excellent pecorino-and-sage bruschetta and the spaghetti with artichoke cream, mint, and parmesan. The roast potatoes and chicory make for wonderful, flavor-filled sides, and the cup of cool, ever-so-wobbly panna cotta is a pleasing way to end the meal." - Maresa Manara

A good friend recommended that my wife and I dine here. We enjoyed the dining experience but the service was very slow in the beginning. It took about 30 minutes for the waiter to take our order. Once the order was placed, everything was fine. The wine 🍷 was delicious and reasonably priced. The appetizer was very good and my wife’s pasta was very good. I ordered the sweetbreads with organ meat and it was just ok. I really like sweetbreads but there weren’t very many and the majority of the dish were intestines which aren’t my favorite. Overall a good dining experience. When we return, I’ll order something different.

We had a very disappointing experience at this restaurant. Despite making a reservation months in advance for our group of 15 (we were tourists btw), we were met with hostility rather than hospitality!! The manager was unwelcoming and interacted with us in a rude and dismissive manner. When we sat outside while waiting, instead of kindly asking us to adjust the seating, he abruptly dragged the chairs in front of us without any proper communication. We strongly considered leaving but chose to stay out of respect, something the staff (manager) unfortunately did not reciprocate. Service was unprofessional and lacked basic courtesy. It’s unfortunate, especially considering the restaurant’s historic reputation. There are many other restaurants in Rome that offer better food and far more respectful service. As for the food: the carbonara was overly salty and the overall meal was underwhelming. ❗️Save yourself the time, money, and disappointment. There are far better dining options in the area.

0/5 - Stay away from this restaurant. The manager/resident wine sommelier (he was wearing a grey coat) was VERY RUDE to our group! We made a reservation months before our dinner. ⚠️He needs a crash course on how to treat people with respect. We were very excited to dine in this restaurant but was very disappointed with not only the food but most especially on how he treated us (we were tourists by the way) Stay away from this restaurant if possible! There are other better restaurants in Rome with better service and food quality! And true service was very slow!! WILL NEVER EAT HERE AGAIN! WORSE EXPERIENCE IN ROME - we stayed in Rome for 2 weeks and this was the very very worse trust me ⚠️❗️

STAY AWAY! My family and I had placed a reservation for this place months prior since we really wanted to experience that authentic experience of Roman cuisine. According to guides we found, this place has both the history and the taste to back up its claim of being the go-to spot to really immerse yourself in ancient Roman cultures. Towards the end of our day exploring Rome, we decided to make it to the restaurant a couple of minutes before our reservation since we were really eager and hungry to try their food. While waiting outside, the manager (who we figured out to be Simone) waltzed outside and started banging the chairs, blaming us for messing with the chairs outside. Now we are from the Philippines and really love to travel around the world. Luckily enough, we seldomly are victims of racism in the countries we visit; hence, this would have been the last place we thought we would have experienced this type of behavior. Especially since this place has so much reputation to hold onto being such a historical landmark. After the altercation, we still decided to eat at the restaurant since we already booked a reservation and pre-ordered our meals (we didn’t want to be rude, unlike them 😆). However, as time went on, we were treated with so much disrespect! As the same manager tended to all of the other guests (who were indeed the same skin color as him), he treated us and another table like so poorly like he had to just do it since his grandfather was watching. Eventually, the grandfather caught on to what he was doing and decided to change places with him in serving us. Food-wise, everything was too salty that we ordered more drinks every time a dish went out (maybe that is how they earn 😂). Their pasta was also undercooked, and I strongly implore to run away from their carbonara (it was too salty). We were confused to see other customers really having a good time, but surely enough I’ve also seen similar reviews before that depict a similar story to us, just because we aren’t locals 🥲. I really had high hopes for this restaurant, but please run away as soon as you can! 0️⃣/5️⃣

Wonderful experience! Excellent service with even better food. The ratio of quality and prices is excellent. We had 2 first courses, 2 second and 2 desserts (one with a historic porto) and 2 digestives. Everything was perfect and I would reccomend to try. The owner,as well as the personnel is extremely attentive to the needs of guests.

Checchino has a fantastic ambience that truly makes you feel like you’re in a classic Italian trattoria. The warm lighting, traditional decors, wooden walls, and cozy atmosphere set the perfect stage for what I hoped would be an unforgettable meal. Being in Testaccio, a neighborhood famous for its food, my expectations were understandably high. It felt like the kind of place where you’d get an authentic Roman dining experience, and in some ways, it delivered. However, the food fell a little short of what I was expecting. Don’t get me wrong—it was still good, but not at the level I had hoped for. The carbonara was overly salty and, strangely, not cooked al dente, which surprised me given that pasta texture is such a fundamental part of Roman cuisine. I also ordered a bistecca, which turned out to be far too tough for my liking. Maybe I’m just used to how we prepare steaks in the U.S., but it didn’t have the tenderness I was hoping for. The biggest disappointment, though, was the service. Every time I needed something, I had to wait far too long to get a server’s attention, which was frustrating, especially since the restaurant wasn’t even busy when I visited around 3 or 4 in the afternoon. Given the reputation of Checchino, I expected a smoother and more attentive dining experience. Overall, I wouldn’t say it was a bad meal, but with the high standards of Testaccio, I was left wishing for more.

Nov24. Brilliant!. Don’t be off put by the headline offal theme; lots here to eat for those who don’t like that. Tremendous wines; friendly service; beautiful and atmospheric dining room. A real wow 🤩. Look forward to returning asap!

Yelp
On my trip to Rome, we went here for dinner, and it was easily the best meal of our entire trip!! I highly recommend the chicken cacciatore, it's amazing!! Also the pasta and braised oxtails were fantastic too!! I would highly recommend this to anyone coming to Rome! Not overly expensive and amazing service and ambience!

Yelp
Awesome food and great service. I ate there with my family and we ordered everything family style, so we could try a bunch of items We ordered the following: 1) Antipasto misto (4 Stars). It had Capicola and Capricosa for the meats, not sure what the 2 cheeses were but both were good. They also had toasted bread with 2 different toppings, one was a mixture of basil and cheese and the other was a mixture of artichoke and cheese, they were ok. The start of the dish was definitely the brown beans stew in a tomato bacon rind sauce (5 Stars). We should have ordered the full portion, so good! 2) Spaghetti alla Carbonara (4 Stars) classically prepared and well executed. 3)Pollo alla "Cacciatora", Roman chicken cacciatore (5 Stars) It was chicken braised in white wine, with some white wine vinegar, rosemary and chili pepper. The chicken was cooked perfectly tender, so good! 4)Verza ai semi di finocchio (5 Stars) It is sliced savoy cabbage and fennel marinated with red wine vinegar. Really good! 5) Coda alla vaccinara (5 Stars) Ox-tails braised in tomato sauce with celery, pine nuts, raisins and bitter chocolate. The sauce was really good and the meat perfectly cooked, easy to take off the bone, plus the bone marrow was outstanding! If any of my friends or family go to Rome, I'll be recommending this one

Yelp
Food 7/10 Went to this place because I heard their intestines were famous, and they truly were really tasty. Quite a heavy meal, but we also ordered a salad to balance it out, as well as a cheese and meat platter. I really enjoyed the intestines because I've only ever had them with Chinese flavors, so it was definitely a new experience. The cheeses were super unique and paired super well with the salami. Overall, a really great meal and worth checking out! Atmosphere 9/10 In a very local area, I loved the wooden interior, the small details on the walls really completed the space. So much history on the walls, and the lighting was perfect for a casual and homey meal. I felt transported when I went inside, there was plenty of space between each table, and I'm obsessed with the linen cloths and textures of the restaurant. Service 9/10 Very attentive, made sure to answer all of our questions about the menu, and super helpful overall :)

Yelp
This restaurant has been in the family for 5-6 generations already in the Testaccio neighborhood. TripAdvisor reviews were great, so we headed over. At around 8 PM, the guy told us that they were full for the night and didn't take waitlists. They had some tables outside but weren't using them. He said we could make a reservation for the next night, so we did. Come the next night, we're seated on time. They checked our COVID vaccination cards. Their menu is online (QR code). It's an extensive menu with English translations. We decided on one primi and one secondi, but they brought both out together. They didn't charge us "cover" charge. Rigatoni al ragu - delicious!! I was surprised to get sauce inside the pasta tube. It was served so hot that it burned my mouth. Trippa alla romana - offal is not my thing, but the sauce was delicious. My eating partner thought it was just ok too. They spoke English, which was nice.

Yelp
I read an article in RomaToday that gave recommendations for where to eat in Testaccio, and Checchino dal 1887 seems like our style, so we checked it out. Our tastes veer towards classically prepared dishes and this restaurant checked all the right boxes. The service in the restaurant was fantastic, including a very professional wait staff, some of which were white jacketed. We started with a Lazio red wine, which was fantastic as their wine menu divides them into light, medium and full bodied (strutturati) options, which helped us quite a bit. I was very surprised by the way that the bottle and glasses were prepared for us. The process is called "priming" or "seasoning" the glass, which is a technique (originating in Italy) that involves pouring a bit of wine, about an ounce, into the glasses and swirling it to coat the bowl before discarding it. It removes any leftover flavors or aromas from when the glass was washed or stored. Pretty cool and a new experience for us. For an appetizer we shared a small taste of beans and cotiche, which were beans in a tomato sauce cooked with pork rinds. It was delicious and really got me in the fall mood. My main dish was Rigatoni al Sugo di Coda, which was a deliciously slow cooked oxtail stew and a Roman tradition. Slow cooking meat like this is a favorite and they didn't disappoint. My wife's dish was another traditional pasta: Bucatini alla Gricia. It was unsurprisingly equally enjoyable. We each finished the meal with an espresso to go along with our Tiramisu and Panna Cotta. We left with a smile on our faces and a plan to return in the near future. This is a strong recommendation if you enjoy traditional Roman fare.

Yelp
Was almost scared off by a few bad reviews on here but thankfully we still went. It was the best meal we have had in Italy and that is saying a lot. We went with a lot of our server's recommendations and they were all great. I definitely recommend the ox tail. They said it is their specialty and it was delicious. Not sure what the people with a bad experience here had or if the reviews were real since they tried pushing other restaurants but you will be happy you went.

Yelp
When in Rome, eat as the Romans...okay, if you don't have family & friends there like I do then you'd have to go in search of real Roman cuisine and this lovely, cosy restaurant in Testaccio is not to be missed. We dined here (sometimes nice to have a night out) and nothing disappointed. Greeted with a smile and quick seating (we had a reservation - be sure to make one). Let me get to the goodies...all the dishes were paired with a wine. Bruschetta w/pecorino & sage - paired with an extremely delicious wine called Cannellino Trippa alla Romana - my 1st time and it was not at all what I expected. Light, tasty and the way it was cooked and seasoned was perfect. Oxtail (forget the Italian name) - hearty, meat falling from the bone succulent Puntarella - a sharp tasting root veg with a moorish dressing that makes it curl when wet. Yum! Biscotti w/Moscato wine - wine cookies so good Torta di pere cioccolato salsa - devilishly good warm chocolate tart/cake on a plate...oh my goodness, this one is real trouble! We spent a good amount of time in here because that's how Italian's eat..no wolfing down of food. It's a full on social experience at home and at restaurants. Loved it. Very warm and cosy environment, perfectly timed service. The price for two will set you back about 80-85 Euros but we work so no issue and I am still thinking about every bit of food and every moment we enjoyed here!

Yelp
The owner and staff are very pleasant and welcoming! We really wanted to like this place. However, the food was among the most regretful things we have eaten in Rome. Yelp is a primarily food review community so I have to go with their food. Cacio e pepe: pepper was oddly numbing to the tongue and cheese was curdled. Left grainy and numbing feeling in the mouth and was very unpleasant. Steak: full of fat and connective tissues. If it weren't done medium rare, I don't think it would have been chewable. Meat also smelled strange. Ox tail: sticky and stodgy with fat that was not rendered out. Decor: feels oddly like grandma's living room. 1960s decoration, wallpaper and lighting. Overall, great and friendly staff. But food and ambience were not pleasant. This was a restaurant experience that we wish to not remember from our otherwise amazing Rome trip.

Yelp
Dinner at Checcino Dal in Trastravere. - Pasta e ceci- traditional pasta and chickpea soup with rosemary - Bucatini alla Gricia- Long hollow spaghetti served in a white sauce made with ewe's milk cheese and pig's cheek - Coda alla vaccinara - Ox-tail stewed in a tomato sauce with celery, pine nuts, and raisins - Petto di vitello alla fornara - Oven roasted veal breast - Carciofo alla Romana - artichoke in olive oil and white wine - Panna cotta - cream custard with berry sauce This was an excellent and delicious meal. The pig cheeks in the bucatini were more like bacon, so the dish was similar to the typical roman briny, rustic flavors. The ox tail had an excellent sauce, claimed to be cooked for 7 hours - it had pine nuts and spices, the ox it self was not cooked as tender as Pirelli but the sauce was flavorful. The oven roasted veal was good. The side of artichoke was interesting and tasty and ending the meal with the panna cotta was just perfect! Service was good and meal totaled about 85 Euros.

Yelp
This place is off the beaten path, but worth the trip! Very cute and authentic Italian place. The waiters were all very kind and knowledgeable. Food was delicious. My mom had the veal and I had the chicken cacciatore. Both were phenomenal. Veal was cooked perfectly. We shared a side salad and rosemary potatoes. Potatoes were perfection -- highly recommend those! For dessert we had the pear and walnut cake, and semifrreddo ice cream. Both delicious. Would highly recommend this spot!

Yelp
The place and the staff were very pleasant, food was not a wow. Lot of history around the area.

Yelp
Decided to hit up this well received Quinto Quarto (offal) / Roman style restaurant in the Testaccio neighborhood (Southwest) in Rome for comparison to the laid back Da Bucatino. Hands down, Da Bucatino is a better experience. Checchino is a little more polished but not enough to make a difference and we are looking for food marks here anyway. I did have a "when in rome" moment, ordering the Pajata Arrosto (small intestine of lamb grilled with salt and pepper). It wasn't all bad, reminding me of crispy liver. In sum, decent wine list but over-hyped. Go to Da Bucatino.

Yelp
I'm from Rome and I live in the US. My wife and I recently visited Rome and had dinner at Checchino Dal 1887 restaurant The food was precooked, the wine was OK, but overpriced. For the wine and water, two pasta entrees with a side dish we paid 117 euros before the tip. This is not a great value in Rome. I don't recommend this place to anyone who wants to experience authentic Roman cuisine (and pricing)

Greg F.

Yelp
This is tradition, quality and excellence at all levels. I was originally brought here by locals and it never fails to please. Pajata and all of the "quinto quarto" are special here, but the cacio e pepe is not to be missed.
