Checchino has a fantastic ambience that truly makes you feel like you’re in a classic Italian trattoria. The warm lighting, traditional decors, wooden walls, and cozy atmosphere set the perfect stage for what I hoped would be an unforgettable meal. Being in Testaccio, a neighborhood famous for its food, my expectations were understandably high. It felt like the kind of place where you’d get an authentic Roman dining experience, and in some ways, it delivered.
However, the food fell a little short of what I was expecting. Don’t get me wrong—it was still good, but not at the level I had hoped for. The carbonara was overly salty and, strangely, not cooked al dente, which surprised me given that pasta texture is such a fundamental part of Roman cuisine. I also ordered a bistecca, which turned out to be far too tough for my liking. Maybe I’m just used to how we prepare steaks in the U.S., but it didn’t have the tenderness I was hoping for.
The biggest disappointment, though, was the service. Every time I needed something, I had to wait far too long to get a server’s attention, which was frustrating, especially since the restaurant wasn’t even busy when I visited around 3 or 4 in the afternoon. Given the reputation of Checchino, I expected a smoother and more attentive dining experience. Overall, I wouldn’t say it was a bad meal, but with the high standards of Testaccio, I was left wishing for more.
