22 Restaurants Highlighting Jersey City’s Rich Culinary Diversity

"Newport is an unexpected location for one of the metropolitan area’s best Hunan restaurants, with lots of fiery choices and pleasing ingredients like smoked bamboo, pickled chiles, pork belly, eggplants, and yes, the cuisine’s signature fish head. The menu also offers Sichuan fare and plenty of vegetarian dishes, but skip the steamed dumplings." - Robert Sietsema

31 Glorious Chinese Restaurants to Try

"Chef Tan is a mini chain with two branches in the NYC area, of which this is my favorite. It offers a cosmopolitan mix of Chinese cuisines, with a little each of Sichuan, Hunan, and Chinese American dishes, the perfect mix to please its customers. Don’t miss the fish head with diced red peppers or the eggplant, century egg, and green chiles smashed in a mortar from the Hunan portion of the menu." - Robert Sietsema

8 Tongue-Tingling Hunan Restaurants in NYC | Eater NY

"This three-year-old restaurant is isolated from the hip Jersey City dining scene, and boasts a flashy interior featuring a grand piano and massive sparkling chandeliers that look like floating galaxies. The menu offers a mix of Sichuan and Hunan cuisine — the former just so-so, the latter spectacular. The fish head is a gigantic production with enough flesh for three or more; the century egg and eggplant served in a mortar with enough green chiles to blow the top of your head off; and the scallion fried rice is mellow enough to counteract the spicy flavors. A new, equally good branch is now open on St. Marks in the East Village." - Robert Sietsema

This Fiery Fish Head Deserves Your Attention - Eater NY

"Located on the ground floor of an office building, Chef Tan is large and serpentine in layout, with an interior sumptuously clad in stained woods and burnished gold panels, slits along one wall through which flickering video flames can be seen, and, smack dab in the middle, a black grand piano. As I arrived, a high school student sat down and lit into Beethoven’s “Pathetique Sonata,” as an appreciative audience stood around her." - Robert Sietsema

Great food and atmosphere. We enjoyed three dishes including smoked duck, boneless tilapia in chili oil, and braised pork in sauce. Our party completely finished the meal and the spice level for the tilapia and pork was perfect. However, the first dish arrived before the rice.

It's my second time here. I had a great dining experience at this restaurant. The food was flavorful and well-prepared. The service was also excellent (friendlyand efficient). Whether you're craving classic dishes or something new, this place is definitely worth a visit!

We have come here twice now and it’s now our go-to fancy date place. The decor is lovely with an expansive fireplace adding to the cozy feel The food is consistently delicious as well as authentic. The service is quick and food came out FAST. Overall, love this place! Wish it was closer so we could have it everyday.

Google
The food was very good—fresh, flavorful, and well-prepared. Service was average, nothing particularly memorable. However, the most surprising part of the experience was being denied an extra serving of white rice. When we asked for more, we were told that the initial portion was all they could provide. They didn’t even offer more for an additional cost. It struck me as a bit unusual and left a strange impression.

Very yummy food and great atmosphere! Not necessarily worth a very dedicated visit but a comfortable place to stop by

Google
A friend recommended this place, and it’s perfect for dining with friends. The food is super delicious and really suits the Chinese palate! Everything we ordered was spot on—nothing disappointed. Definitely a great spot to enjoy dishes you can’t easily make at home.

Google
We visited Chef Tan with family and had a great dining experience. The restaurant offers a solid range of vegetarian options, and the staff is accommodating—they’re happy to prepare dishes with fully vegetarian ingredients, avoiding fish or oyster sauce upon request. We especially enjoyed the spicy choices like the mapo tofu and the vegetable dry pot, which were both flavorful and satisfying. There’s also an extensive menu of non-vegetarian options for those who prefer. The food is authentic Chinese, and the service was prompt and efficient. Definitely worth a visit if you’re looking for quality Chinese cuisine in the area.

Had a great dining experience with my team! I ordered the chicken fried rice and broccoli for me both were flavorful and cooked perfectly. The staff was very polite and attentive, which made the experience even better. The ambiance was nice and relaxing, perfect for a casual team outing. Definitely a spot.

Yelp
I came to this restaurant on Wednesday afternoon with my boyfriend. Outside was freezing, so I was glad that I was seated right away. This place was very quiet and kind of empty. Inside was a lot warmer but where I was seated, I still felt a bit of a breeze. This restaurant had a lot of seatings and had nice decorations. The servers were pretty nice and checked up on us once. When we needed something we have to wave them down. We ordered dry pot with beef and it came with rice. I love the flavors and the beef was tender. One dish wasn't enough so we ordered steamed eggplant with minced pork. This dish took forever to come out. If a dish take a long time to come out, I expect it to taste amazing. However, this dish was a let down. It lacked a bit of flavor, so we asked for hot sauce to make up for the taste. The server also gave a rice for this eggplant dish also. One important thing for those of you who need to use the women's restroom. I went to the middle stall and locked it all the way. That was a bad idea. The door's lock wasn't aligned properly and it took me a while to get out of the stall (I thought I was going to be stuck inside). It took a lot of muscles (pushing the door and pull the lock) to get out of the bathroom. Please be careful. Besides that issue, I enjoyed eating at this restaurant.

Yelp
Based on two visits, one dine in and one take out. The restaurant itself is nice and the menu is reasonably diverse. But the food is so so and the service is not friendly at best, unfriendly at worst. As there are few Chinese places nearby they have plenty of business, but I would find somewhere else if possible.

Yelp
Food (5/5): We got the minced pork eggplant and the beef dry pot stir fry. Both delicious were solid and quite delicious. Be careful of the numbing pepper though in the hotpot. Next time I would ask to see if that could be removed. Service (4/5): The servers didn't go out of their way to be friendly but they helped when asked and we had no issues redeeming the Yelp check-in offer. The hotpot came out at moderate speed but the eggplant with minced pork took a long time. Ambiance (5/5): The restaurant looked really nice and modern with beautiful sphere chandelier type lights. The seats were spacious and well maintained. Overall a nice looking restaurant.

Yelp
Came here for lunch on a random weekday. Wasn't busy at all so got seated right away. Overall, food was okay, a bit much on the saltier side for my liking. I enjoyed the appetizers (crispy cucumbers and wontons in chili oil). I didn't care for the entrees, again because it was too salty. White rice helped, but without it, not to my liking. Price itself was on the more expensive side, but not expected in downtown JC. Not sure if I would come here again unless they had a happy hour for drinks.
google avatar

Yao Y.

Yelp
Gave them another chance, still not happy with the results. It is almost like they can't cook anything without adding chili pepper and overwhelm the flavor with spiciness. Ok, I get that it's a Sichuan/Hunan restaurant so spicy food is their specialty, but I specifically picked dishes that were NOT labeled as spicy (at least according to their menu on UberEats) -- Sautéed Frog, and it still came completely drenched in spicy oil and chili pepper. This "non-spicy" dish is at least the equivalent of medium spicy in other Chinese restaurants. Now my lunch is completely ruined. Will never order from them again, and I would advise others with lowish spicy tolerance to be wary too.

Yelp
Lovely sichuan/hunan cuisine in Jersey city. Steps away from PATH Newport station. The space is modern with high ceiling and glass wall, bright and airy. The menus all come with picture very helpful for those who are not familiar with the Chinese cuisine, you just have to give them the dish number. Service is also very fast, didn't have long wait to be seated and food come out very fast. The food is very authentic. Not all are super spicy there are options or different level of spicy for everyone. My favorites are Chongqing noodle, has a good scallion oil taste and medium spicy. The chingqing style fried chicken is crispy and boneless. Big chunks of dark meat very delicious. All the plating are so adorable. Food are on the pricy side but definitely worth every penny.

Yelp
Arrived to much fanfare - the New Jersey Half-Marathon finish line was right around the corner! Joking aside, first impressions are a bright, modern dining room with good music playing, a fully stocked bar, and the typical copper faced fireplace that gives the whole restaurant a nice touch of style. The staff was exceptionally friendly - I often look for the smiles and friendly demeanor. Here it was great - and there was no waiting around for menus or water, they were brought right away. The waiter circled around a couple of times to check whether we were ready, also a nice touch - I'd rather be asked repeatedly than struggle to get their attention. The menu is beyond robust - I swear we took 20 minutes trying to make up our minds since there were soooo many yummy looking dishes that got me excited for my return trip to China. Our selection.... Spicy Wontons -- weakest link of the meal. A little soggy but more importantly the flavor was bland. Only came out with just the chili oil - no cilantro or other things. We ended up dipping them in the Chongqing Noodle sauce Chongqing Noodles -- DELICIOUS with large helping of noodles. Be sure to mix everything as all the good stuff is in the bottom of the bowl. Chongqing Style Fried Chicken -- way bigger than I expected, in a good way. Large piece of juicy chicken lightly fried on the outside. Flavor excellent. Leap Frog in Special Hunan Sauce -- the sauce was awesome, and I loved the huge pieces of cucumber. Frog meat is quite small - I might suggest going with fish instead if you're hungry, but otherwise, I really enjoyed this dish. Suggest the restaurant source larger frog legs. Shell-in Shrimp Garlic Sauce -- nice flavor, great that it comes with glass noodles. I wish the shells would come off easier but what can you do. Overall tasty. Pumpkin Cookies - fried pumpkin cakes with red beans. Good. Would love with a red bean ice cream.

Yelp
The food is great, the service isn't the best. I've been coming here since pre-covid, for friend hang outs and also work lunches. The spicy is SPICY. Each entry comes with a bowl of rice. We tried to get the servers attention for water, ordering, check, and it's so hard to get their attention.

Yelp
Chef Tan is a classic authentic Chinese restaurant sitting in the heart of Newport. Food is solid and the staff is attentive. You can't go wrong here! (Look at the images the translation isn't 100%) Taste: 4.5/5 Service: 4/5 Ambience: 3/5 Value for Money: 4/5 Here we had three dishes: 1) sichuan style ribeye - not actually ribeye, it's actually fatty beef that you would use in hotpot, sauce is slightly diluted and makes use of Szechuan spice 2) Sautéed boneless pig feet - solid stir fry with chopped up pig trotters 3) mixed mushroom casserole - the highlight of the show, highly recommend, there is some pork in here (for the vegetarians out there) Side note: the cocktails are $8.99 which are a steal versus dedicated bars. If you're hungry swing on by and you won't be disappointed! Fun fact: they use Charmins as toilet paper, aka the nice stuff~

Yelp
The ambience of this place is very nice. There is somebody who plays the piano in the evenings. We came here on a Saturday night expecting very typical Chinese food. This place is anything but typical. It's not the menu of your typical walk up Chinese restaurants. The menu, features and array of different dishes, some a bit more exotic than others. They had frog on the menu as well as rabbit. I tried the frog. While it is tasty, it does have a lot of bones in it. You can ask the servers to make your dishes less spicy. Of course, mine was very spicy. The service was good but perhaps the next time I will ask for a less spicier dinner. Make a trip down here when you can, it is a very nice place to eat.

Yelp
The moment you step in there was live music playing! We were seated right away and the interior of the restaurant was gorgeous. There were art pieces on the wall as well. The first thing I had to order was the pork belly with garlic sauce and it did not disappoint. It's one of the many cold dishes that they have! I'm usually not a fan of cucumber, but it went so well with the pork belly and garlic sauce. It's a must try! We also ordered mapo tofu and scallion dish with chicken which were my comfort food and it was perfect and hit the spot. The chef tan style fried rice literally came in style. It was full of flavor and went so well with all the dishes. For the last dish, we decided to get the mongolian beef and it was so well marinated. The beef wasn't dry and it came out sizzling. The beef was more sweet than savory. I prefer my meat slightly sweet and this was so delicious. The food came over super quick and their menu has such a large selection that you can't decide what to get! All the dishes on their menu comes with pictures so it makes it easier to narrow down what you want. Overall, would come back especially since it's right by Newport centre and I'm still craving more of their pork belly with garlic sauce!

Yelp
I recently heard rave reviews about Chef Tan, particularly from those of Chinese decent and also from someone that had lived in China for years. Their knowledgeable verification made me even more enthusiastic to give it a shot. The restaurant might not have looked like much from the outside, but it was beautiful on the inside with modern décor and even a grand piano. In fact, about 5 minutes after we were seated, we were delighted by a woman playing the instrument for the remainder of our meal. The restaurant staff was gracious as well. The place had a bar, so my boyfriend ordered a Jack Daniels and Coke, which was very reasonably priced. When it came to the food, the menu had a limited "Americanized" section with items that he was used to. I had had Szechuan food a few times in the past, so I was more used to seeing kidney, tripe, frog, and other unusual bits. We ordered from various sections of the menu, starting with a shared Scallion Pancake appetizer, which I found too greasy and a bit bland. However, my boyfriend's Chicken and Garlic Sauce was heavily infused with the herb and boldly flavored. I had selected the Spicy Dry Pot with Chicken for my meal, but had asked that they reduce the spice level to medium. The steaming pot of chicken, tofu, bell peppers, onions, cauliflower, and more was much hotter than I had expected. However, I really liked it; I just made sure to steer clear of the giant chili peppers! Chef Tan offered traditional and more international versions of Szechuan cuisine that was truly delicious. Stop by and do not forget to grab a fortune cookie from the host stand as you leave!

Yelp
Came here with a large group and they were able to accommodate a big table quickly. They gave everyone the right food and it didn't take too long. Overall a nice lunch spot but it does get packed easily so definitely come earlier!

Yelp
authentic & SPICY szechuan & hunan food in newport! i've passed by this place so many times on my way to the PATH but never stopped by until now. a lot of the food here is spicy - they specialize in szechuan/hunan food. my poor spice tolerance suffered but i was shocked at how much i liked the food regardless. the dishes were very tasty, and the servers were so kind as well and gave us lots of good recommendations! chef tan has a bunch of locations around the city as well as this one in newport. i'd say they're worth checking out for their huge selection of authentic chinese food. what we ordered (* = my faves): - hunan-style cold bean curd* - scallion pancake - cumin lamb* - chongqing style fried chicken - pumpkin cookies* the cold bean curd appetizer was actually SO GOOD and was the perfect way to start our meal! it was not super spicy, but still had a kick from the chili(?) oil. both the chongqing fried chicken & the cumin lamb were SPICYYY but i would rather power through the cumin lamb. the lamb was so delicious, wasn't gamey at all, just packed with flavor! and the pumpkin cookies were a great dessert, they reminded me of fried mochi. i've seen a lot of rave reviews for the chongqing style fried chicken before and i would also say it's good, but once again the spice level isn't quite right for me... however if i had the tolerance, i'm sure i would have liked it more hahaha. definitely come if you can handle spice!

Yelp
We went here for Dinner before heading to the movie. It was a nice restaurant with plenty of seats that can accommodate any types of party. We ordered Minced Pork with Sour Picked Bean and rice noodle(酸豆角肉末), Sautéed Beef w. Pickled Wild Pepper (egg noodle) (泡椒牛肉總(面)), and Spicy Dry Pot (Lamb) (麻辣香锅系列(羊)). The foods were amazing. The spicy lamb dry pot is a must-have. The meat was very tender and all the vegs went with it truly enhanced the sweetness and flavor of the meat. It was cooked with sichuan pepper, which was really tasty and spicy. For dessert, we shared a Sesame Glutinous Rice Balls (艺麻汤園). This dish was great. It was not too sweet and the black sesame filling were flavorful and lovely, which made a nice end to our meal. We totally recommend it. The services were fast. The ambience in the restaurant was very nice and fancy.

Yelp
I ordered from Chef Tan almost every week. Love everything so far except this time. I ordered this dish "Spare ribs with taro" for the first time. It has more Taro than spare ribs and was surprisingly bland. I had high hope for this dish and was disappointed. We'll try other dish next time.
google avatar

Lynn L.

Yelp
The environment is really good. But I am very disappointed when they first brought up the dishes: the pot is broken, look at the crack. In China only homeless use broken bowl. The food is very salty and oil. No Guo Qi 没有锅气。 乞丐才用破碗
google avatar

Vivian L.

Yelp
I used to order from them for catering. I placed a few party trays today and the quality of food was so bad. Definitely will not order from them again.

Yelp
Totally appreciate and love Chef Tan NewPort. Now that I'm slowly going back to the office, I'd find myself having lunch here more frequently. I usually get the same order all the time. Haha! I'm a sucker for their spicy chicken and white rice. It usually hits the spot. Their spicy chicken is so crunchy, flavorful and just delicious. To be honest the serving portion is just right for me. All I can say go hungry. Lately I'd visited with my manager for lunch. We'd ended up also ordering their chicken lo mein and sharing it. Their lo mein was tasty and delicious for sure. I'd like to stressed how spacious this restaurant is and stylish. The fireplace and creative chandeliers always impress me. And most importantly the staff are very friendly. I feel as though they have a good amount of people working in the kitchen cause I never have to wait too long for my order. This restaurant is definitely my favorite in the NewPort area; I'd highly recommend visiting for sure if you are in the area.

Yelp
Authentic in every way! Tasty and I'd order delivery in the future. Was craving authentic Chinese cuisine & stumbled upon this restaurant. I had no idea this delicious, authentic spot was by me! Walking in seeing only Chinese people, hearing Chinese orders, only receiving chopsticks, experiencing "bad" service, all made me reminisce on my time in china. Lol. You truly have to call the waiters over and not be in a hurry for anything. It was just like that here. I ordered dishes I'd never had before that were reasonably priced for the area ($16 for chicken griddle, The pancake was $7 I think which is market price) and they were both very tasty. I was pleased and had enough chicken & rice for lunch the next day. I'm not sure if this is a recent circumstance but fyi they made me pay with Zelle. They're one of the only restaurants I've seen in forever that have yummy fortune cookies. I grabbed two to satisfy my sweet tooth. I would order from here again but not dine in. Go, enjoy!

Yelp
The food tasty, but the service not good. I asked hot oil, the front desk told me they don't have it now, not even brother to try to get it from kitchen
google avatar

Yelp
Loved this place! It's hard to find an authentic Szechuan restaurant in New Jersey but chef tan really hit the spot. The restaurant itself is spacious and clean, staff very friendly and the food here is delicious and well priced. My husband and I ordered their dandan noodles, duck blood spicy stew, sautéed cabbage and pork with bamboo shoots. Everything came out in less than 15 minutes and came out piping out. The foods were not too oily and the spice levels were just perfect for the dandan noodles and duck blood. We did think the pork with bamboo shoots were a little bland and could've been better with a little more seasoning and salt, but still good. Will definitely be back.

Yelp
Second time trying Chef tan and it was just as good. I went to the highland location previously and I think the food is pretty similar in taste wise. Got to try the thin pork belly and it was pretty good. Mapo tofu was also pretty good. Make sure to check in for free soda because I forgot

Jim W.

Yelp
The good would be the food and the decor. Good mix of traditional and Americanized Chinese, well presented and flavorful. The bad: The service. Oh em gee, the service. Really abysmal. People all around the room having to raise their hands and wave them around to get a waitperson's attention, with limited effectiveness. If our waiter had blown past us one more time avoiding eye contact I thought I might have to stick a foot out and trip him... although I must say, the moment I laid my money down he was Right! There! Suffice to say his tip suffered for it. A little more attention to the paying customer would make for a great improvement.
google avatar

Rinor V.

Yelp
This place has a fair amount of seating, so many large tables. We tried some vegetables dumplings, steamed chicken dumplings, and scallion pancakes. The Scallion pancakes were great. I personally preferred Scallion pancakes over the Dumplings. We also got Lamb & Beef Cumin Dish. My friend has lower spice tolerance so didn't enjoy that much. I'm not sensitive to spice, and mostly I love spicy food. I loved the Lamb Cumin Dish.
google avatar

Yelp
had really great meal, garlic bok choi and the eggplant entree -both vegetarian and fresh and satisfying. The rice was fluffy and prepared well Meal overall was satisfying and nicely presented Very large space with high ceilings, an and added surprise: a grand piano. i have been to venue twice once mid week afternoon 3pm, empty.. a ghost town but on a sunday evening PACKED, mostly asian people that night - does that mean this place is legit authentic cuisine? i might be projecting.. again it was lunar new year.. will be back again and see, and I'll order delivery
google avatar

Shu Y.

Yelp
Delicious! My go-to place after work :) it's spacious, clean, and cozy. I go there twice per week. Recently they lower down the level of spicy to accommodate customers. So if ou want to enjoy authentic sichuan/hunan flavor, u need to let the waitress know that u need "extra" spicy!
google avatar

Josh B.

Yelp
Let's call it 4.5 stars. To address the price complaints, Chef Tan was a pleasant dine-in restaurant that felt like a destination even if it was 10 minutes away. So the price structure is based on its enjoyable dining room that won't mean anything if you're in your apartment, and some of the impressive takeout-focused newcomers will come in as low bidders for your dandan noodle contract. But in Chef Tan's favor, there's a staggering assortment of authentic Szechuan and Hunan dishes. I've had the twice-cooked pork a few times. Tonight was first time with the kelp and spare rib soup, an enjoyable that I never heard of until today. The bamboo shoots with chili oil was brilliant, managing to be flavor-packed yet seemingly healthy, and attaining the perfect level of heat if you happen to be a spice centrist.
google avatar

Vivian C.

Yelp
I had heard mixed reviews about this place, but I am glad I finally tried this place out! I went on a weekday night at the start of the dinner rush and was seated right away, by the time we finished, the restaurant was packed. The staff are friendly, but it was hard to flag down someone when we needed a refill on water or something like that. We were seated closer to the door and out of the view of the waitresses that were running back and forth. For the prices and quality of food, I was happily surprised! The food was tasty and the fried fish and chicken were perfectly seasoned and had a great crunchiness to them. The fried rice didn't have as much protein as expected, but it had that same flavor that I love that come with fried rice. Anyways, I can't believe it took me so long to come here, but will definitely be a regular customer here :)
google avatar

Jokies T.

Yelp
The rice is half-cocked in my pickup order. The spicy short ribs seemed not evenly seasoned. The egg plant is great it goes nicely with rice... Only if the rice is not undercooked. The frog legs are tasty, not much one can I ask for. The restaurant is obviously under pressure and shorthanded due to holiday season however quality control can use some attention. Half-cocked rice is really hard to swallow and it ruined every dishes go with it.
google avatar

Matthew V.

Yelp
Good food but not enough vegan options. No cocktails were available... at 7:30pm on a weekend, weird.
google avatar

Isabelle L.

Yelp
It really depends on what dish you order. This place is certainly not consistent in their cooking. Sometimes too salty and therefore a 2 star rating and other times excellent and therefore a 4 star rating. Very inconsistent in my long-time take out dinner experience. They have quite a few dishes that are certainly Americanized, such as 辣子鸡丁, it's like spicy chicken nuggets but a much better nuggets than McDonald, and yeah that's the more resembling place I can find (ironically). Their stir fried lamb is pretty good, still not like 100% authentic, but it's getting there, much better than deep fried breaded chicken!!
google avatar

Yelp
This is a great Chinese restaurant in Newport. They have a good ambiance, quick service and good food. I have ordered and dined in here for a couple of times and it has never disappointed. I love their special fried rice. Would definitely recommend this place.

Yelp
We get the green peppercorn chicken curry once a week, literally! It is so insanely good. This is our favorite but everything else we have tried has also been super good. Fish, dumplings, beans, cucumbers! I'm so happy that we have such a good Sichuan spot in our neighborhood.
google avatar

Sunshine R.

Yelp
I love the dishes. A lot of choices and very savory. I live the ambiance too. I recommend this place.

Shawn O.

Yelp
Lunch: The food was good with a lot of flavor. Service was poor from start to finish, even having to ask about the appetizer close to the end of the meal. Went a while to see the waiter, water was empty for 19 minutes and I gave up ready to pay the tab. Still waiting to see the waiter to pay the tab...25 minutes. Eventually someone walked by and I asked for the check.
google avatar

Yelp
I want to say that the food is absolutely delicious. I was very satisfied and pleased with all the options. The service here was horrible though. Our waitress was abrupt, rude and just not very pleasant to talk to. We felt like she didn't want to be there. We ordered 4 dishes and only got 3. By the time we finished eating the 3 dishes, the waitress said the kitchen needed more time for our 4th dish but by then we were just frustrated and wanted our check. She took our order without writing anything down so I wouldn't be surprised if she forgot about it and only remembered after I asked 3 times about the fourth dish. We requested brown rice but got white rice and the waitress was very resistant to going back to get brown rice so we gave up. Because the food was good, gave it 2 stars instead of one. One of the most frustrating dining experiences I had. Come here for pick up only. If you dine in, prepare for frustration.
google avatar

Matthew P.

Yelp
Pros: the decor is beautiful, the seating is uncrowded, and the menu has many items that I dound to be unusual but I'm guessing are classic authentic regional Chinese specialties. Con: I ordered the cabbage and pork dish to go. Only after I'd opened it did I ralize that the quart container was pcked full of cooked cabbage, and the amount of pork in the entire dish could be hidden in one closed hand. For $16 plus tax, this was not the amount of protein that I expected.
google avatar

Yelp
I stopped in here to grab a meal with family, and the restaurant is bigger than expected, with a larger seating area screened off from other areas. The tables are quite big, so a little difficult for shorter people to reach across when seated at a table for 6. Big TV up on the wall with Chinese food-related TV shows playing while we waited. Bathrooms are the same as the prior Confucius, they removed the bar as any emphasis. The food we tried: - double cooked pork w/ leek and was not quite spicy - ma po tofu had no "ma" spiciness and felt like something I'd make out of a box though I did like the black bean sauce they used despite being too mild - salt & white pepper chicken had the right aroma, but needed a bit stronger flavor (a little more salt + pepper) - the chicken lo mein was pretty standard, more like a US Chinese dish but done well enough that the in-laws were good with it - pumpkin and red bean fried dessert was ok, but super-hot when it comes out - be careful Overall, I've had better Sichuan and Hunan food, and though the service was ok, it didn't quite feel as authentic as other places I've had recently.

Yelp
It's been a while since we last time went. We decided to give another try today. It was totally a mistake. The food was tasteless and the only thing we like is the Dan Dan noodles...

Yelp
Updated: My tongue told me that they changed the chef. They are not Chef Tan anymore. Disappointed. They poured dark soy sauce to steamed fish now instead of seasoned soy sauce for steaming fish. As a result, the fish after dipping the sauce is salty as salted duck egg.

Yelp
Pros: - Nice location and interior. Just a few-minute walk away to the beautiful Newport waterfront. - Price is OK for an average of roughly $50 per person. We had two people (two guys) and ordered 4 dishes. Guess ordering 3 should be already enough. Cons: - The taste is a little below average compared to other Szechuan restaurants. Also the choices of dishes are relatively smaller compared to areas with more Chinese population (and more "authentic" Szechuan restaurants). - The waiters are not quite reactive to the needs: the napkins and water should be provided rather than asked for. Comments: Would go if happen to be around and need a quick lunch/dinner. But will not go there purposefully.

Yelp
Chef Tan is a proper Chinese restaurant that doesn't grace on Orange Chicken or moo goo gai pan (what even in the F is this??). To have this in Jersey City saves me from having to go into the city for authentic Sichuan food. If you've visited Schezuan Mountain House on St Marks or Flushing, you'll see similar beats served in the dishes here, particularly the sliced pork belly and fried rice dishes. Cumin beef and Chongqing chicken are both favorite staples here, and to come here on a Friday evening means you'll likely have a pianist play music as you dine with other Asian diners in the know. Appealing lighting and lovely decor means you can take friends, family and your lover alike. Maybe one day I'll order one of their fancied Chinese whiskies on the shelf.

Yelp
Very good authentic Chinese food! My family come every week. We love the soup, vegetables and meats! I don't eat spicy and they customize dishes to accommodate me. Just ask! Waitress are polite and helpful! Table service is much better than most restaurants in the area.

Yelp
I should have read these yelp reviews before I ordered. Not impressed with the food at all. The Tofu dish had huge chunks of fatty pork in it and it was also way too spicy, it tastes crazy. The pan fried vegetable dumplings is super over priced. It's almost $11 for 6 little dumplings that you can buy in the Asian supermarket for like $5 a entire bag. The best dish out of my order is the string beans but it's not the best I have had. It was a fun try but I will not order from here again.

Yelp
I was so excited to try it since I haven't had it since the lockdown. But it got me so disappointed, it's got no taste. Not even spicy. Not savory, the garnish didn't even taste fresh. It's just a fried fish sitting in a no taste soup. I do not recommend.

Yelp
Ordered twice from here in these times of quarantine. We wanted to check out something other than our go to: which is Chengdu #1. I believe that we will no longer go to Chef Tan, and return to Chengdu #1. Pros for Chef Tan: 1. Okay selection and allows app ordering and decent service 2. Closer than Chengdu #1, and has a place to sit down and eat (pre-quarantine) 3. Fried items is typically better, but only the ones without sauce Cons for Chef Tan: 1. Their non-fried items seems mushy and their oil/sauce seems muddled/dirty. 2. Portion sizes are small compared to Chengdu 3. Their cold dishes seem to lack punch compared to Chengdu If this was pre quarantine, I would say Chef Tan is a decent place to stop by to have dinner with a friend, but for take out (and if you can navigate Chengdu's secret menu that is on WeChat), we'll stick with Chengdu from now on.

Yelp
Good food in general, though a bit pricy compared to similar dishes in Chinatown/Flushing. For dinner we started off with scallion pancakes and potstickers, and then had several dishes such as the spicy sliced ribeye, shrimp fried rice, and cumin tofu. There were plenty of options to accommodate the one vegetarian in our group, better than the average Chinese restaurant I'd say. The flavor, quality of ingredients, and presentation were all pretty good. On another occasion I had the Mao's braised pork lunch special (to-go only); it was pretty tasty but I've had better (e.g. Hunan Bistro in East Village). I think the sauce can penetrate the meat a bit more, and it should be cooked a bit longer to soften the pork belly. 3.5 stars
