Chen's Mapo Tofu (Shenton Way)

"This is the more affordable fast-food version of Shisen Hanten, managed by the same chef. The famous namesake dish is reincarnated as mapo don, literally mapo tofu on a bowl of Japanese rice. It’s more numbing than spicy, with silky tofu and ground pork. Dan dan mien is another favourite, with the choice between soup and dressed noodles. Szechwan popcorn chicken with a crispy crust and juicy centre packs serious oomph and is also worth trying." - Michelin Inspector

6 of the best Bib Gourmand eateries to try in Singapore - SilverKris

"Run by chef Chen Kentaro, third-generation owner of a two-Michelin-starred restaurant, this casual Shenton Way spot centers on a signature mapo tofu: minced meat in a spicy fermented bean paste served with Japanese short-grain rice. Non-spicy diners can opt for the Nasu Don (eggplant and minced meat on rice), and the menu also includes noodle options and comforting sides such as braised pork belly and dumplings." - Joy Fang

We had two plant-based mapo tofu, one with onsen egg and one with plant-based cutlet. Portion sizes are good. The mapo sauce was very tasty and there was a very good sauce to rice ratio. The egg was nice but be warned that some may consider it under-done (the whites is very runny). The plant-based cutlet was crispy but the centre was much softer than expected so not much "bite". Spiciness is quite subjective. We had a 1 heat which was tasty and a 2 heat which was borderline too spicy for me (and I can usually take decent spiciness) so I would skip the cutlet and get extra rice next time to tone the 2 down a little bit while still being sauce enough. The real star was the soy puffs which were spicy, savoury and crunchy without being oily. Superb! Add a couple of calamansi juices (okay, a bit like a bland orange juice) and the total came to sgd60. Not crazy expensive but not cheap eats either. Atmosphere is fine without being special - a step up from a food court but not fine dining. You order and pay via your phone (QR code) so there's not really much service interaction.

My fav mapo tofu place! Mapo tofu is moderately spicy, very savoury bean paste & minced pork mixture. I always order the mapo tofu don + crispy duck karaage add on, but I recently found out that it’s not in the menu anymore 😭😭 Please bring it back ☹️

Google
Found this spot after a bit of searching. I ordered the signature set meal, and the mapo tofu was genuinely the star of the show – really tasty and well-made. The noodles and sides were decent as well. While the food was good, I felt it was a bit overpriced for the portion size and simplicity of the dishes. It was an okay meal overall, but the price makes me hesitate to come back.

Google
we walk in on a Sunday afternoon. ordered the sets. signature sets, comes with 1/2 & 1/2 of both mapo tofu rice and noodles., comes with vegetables, soup, and calamansi juice. spice level: 2 I personally prefer this. the other set, it's straight on 1 portion of mapo tofu on rice, vegetables, and calamansi juice. it's tolerable as I'm used to spicy food. For the first timer, please don't try it. spice level: 3 the gyoza with spice chilli was exceptionally as well. portions are good for sharing. service was excellent and fast.

Lovely dinner, what a treat! The mapo tofu is so well done with a tangy Ma-la flavour without being over powering in spiciness. Love it! So addictive. Plus a lovely view to enjoy the meal.

So glad I got to enjoy great Mapo Tofu in Singapore. A familiar taste at Chen’s, they have a wider variety on the menu, and some were my favorites. I really hope they open an outlet at Changi Airport.

Google
I ordered mapo tofu with ramen. The portion is more than enough for me. Tofu is very fresh and soft. The spicy level 3 is really very spicy and gives a good kick. Unfortunately the noodles were overcooked. I find the noodles too soft and they stick together so much I had a hard time mixing in tofu sauce. Maybe it’s a better option to go with rice. There is very little minced pork in the dish as well, perhaps this is just the way it should be.

Google
Great Mapo rice, can select different spicy level, the lowest (original) spicy level is still quite spicy. The dinner price is fair, SGD 16 for Mapo Rice with drink.

Yelp
My husband was so excited to take me to this place when we traveled to Singapore. The location is in a mini mall like location in a business district, upstairs with some other small vendors. The staff was friendly. I'm a vegetarian and hubby heard they had a veggie version of this chef's famous mapo tofu so we ordered it. While it tasted ok, I was not blown away like I was supposed to be. The consistency of the tofu was softer then i prefer, the sauce good but nothing I would need to eat again. It's prob a great place for a meat eater, as is most Asian food.

Yelp
It may be a distraction that MicheLEN-starred ShizEN HantEN's Chef ChEN would venture out with a fast food joint, but it's a boon for the mEN , womEN, and childrEN in the CBD. The reasonably-priced food is delish and fiery, and the menu quite long for fast food. The Bib Gourmand is well deserved!
