"It was a sad day for many when Omi closed in 2021, but its replacement, Cheng’s, is a more than worthy successor. In the short time it’s been open it’s become known as one of the best Chinese restaurants in Baton Rouge, offering friendly, attentive service, an extensive menu of Chinese stapes, and a pleasant, sit-down setting. Standout items include the spicy garlic eggplant and double-cooked pork belly." - Clair Lorell

Great service - very attentive and beautiful meal! It was beautifully plated and tasted great! Order crab rangoons and walnut shrimp - good portions on the entrees and very fresh! Crab rangoons were more cream cheese and a bit hard around the corners but still super tasty.

Food was less than mediocre and service was terrible. Service should’ve been good since the place was pretty empty. Waiter never checked on us, never refilled my drink, and I had to flag him down 20 minutes after finishing my food to get the check.

Update: second visit was just as good! We love this place! Hands down best Chinese cuisine we've had in years. We had stopped going out for Chinese food on date nights because it was always mediocre, we are so glad we found this place. The restaurant is so clean, service is fantastic and the food was delicious. Even the restrooms were spotless. We had the Tangerine Beef and the Bok choy with shitake mushrooms. Crab Rangoon, egg roll, egg drop soup. Cleaned our plates and we don't feel overstuffed.

Honestly, I’ve driven by this place countless times on the interstate, and I have never once thought about going. My coworkers invited me with them to get some drinks and a snack after work, so I joined them, and we went to Cheng’s. I was thoroughly impressed. Very clean, good food, great prices. Restrooms were clean as well. Will definitely be going back.

Google
The food and service at Cheng’s was fantastic. The egg roll was the perfect amount of crunch while still soft on the inside. The Mongolian beef was the most delicious sweet and savory. The garlic pork was cooked with the perfect amount of spice. We had a great experience. The owner came around to our table to speak with us. A very, very kind man. I recommend a visit!

Got here for midday lunch. Tried the sesame chicken lunch special. It was very good. The portion size was great. Not overloaded on the rice. I liked the bento box style trays. I’ll probably try the “Ants Climbing Trees” dish next time. 👍🏻

Google
In a recent visit to Baton Rouge, I went to this restaurant twice because once wasn't enough. The eggplant in their home style sauce is outstanding - I would make the hour+ drive just for that. My next visit I had a softshell crab dish that I'm still thinking about. Good eggrolls, truly wonderful people - the owners remembered me. Highly recommend.

Very friendly staff. Relaxing atmosphere, food and drink selections are wonderful. The Fish filet in spicy Sichuan chilioil was so delicious. The double cooked pork was awesome! The portions are great. All around 5 stars!

Yelp
**Cheng's Restaurant and Bar** **Address:** 7951 One Calais Ave #3403, Baton Rouge, LA 70809 **Subject: Exceptional Dining Experience at Cheng's Restaurant and Bar** Dear Fellow Foodies, I am writing to express my utmost satisfaction and appreciation for the exceptional dining experiences I have had at Cheng's Restaurant and Bar over the past four years. Throughout my numerous visits, I have consistently encountered remarkable food quality, attentive and professional staff, and an owner, Mr. Philip, who genuinely values and cares for his customers. The Mongolian dish, featuring finely sliced beef stir-fried with yellow and green onions in a mildly spicy sauce, stands out as a personal favorite. The Five Spices Chicken and Stir-fry Green Beans are also highly recommended for their delectable flavors and textures. Additionally, the Pork & Vegetable Dumplings, available pan-fried or steamed and accompanied by the restaurant's signature sauce, are a must-try. I wholeheartedly recommend Cheng's Restaurant and Bar to anyone seeking an exceptional dining experience. The establishment's commitment to culinary excellence, attentive service, and customer satisfaction is truly commendable. #Tonylameats #chengsrestaurantandbar #batonrougela #chineserestaurant #sichuanfood

Yelp
Actual sit down and order Chinese restaurant; no buffet! Very good food, pleasant service and a clean place to enjoy a meal. Generous portions too!

Randy L.

Yelp
The Chinese food here was very very good when we dined Saturday night. And considering that the restaurant was 80% or more occupied when we were there plus the number of to geaux orders, I suspect others agree with my assessment. And the dine in experience is only enhanced when the manager/owner speaks to you and is attentive to your dining experience which was also duplicated by our server. So, yes, this was a good evening. We arrived shortly after 6:00 p.m. and were seated. Like many restaurants when you walk in there is a board which contains either daily specials and/or suggested dishes and this establishment was no different----the first dish listed was the beef chow fun----only 1 place in Baton Rouge serves this and that establishment appears to have cooks and/or cooking style from northern China as opposed to the Hong Kong/Canton area which contains the best chefs and most tasty food. We order this and it was prepared more Cantonese style and hit the right spot---it was a little greasy but not enough for it to impact me. I am glad it was listed on the board. Our 2nd dish was a fried fish fillet served on top of the white thin noodles----sorta like ramen noodles ---with a honey flavored sauce. Again, another winner with no fish taste and a strong enough (but not too strong) honey flavor. Yes, very good. Our last dish we initially thought to order the pork belly but our server suggested a different dish which was similar to the pork belly but a different area of the pig. Another winner. We will return here as I am thrilled to know that Baton Rouge has another option for Chinese food. Yum yum.

Yelp
What a great surprise! Chengs blew my mind. I ordered the eggplant with Kung Pao sauce and added shrimp. The combo came with miso soup and an egg roll. I added the large hot sake since it was a tough day. I wasn't expecting a whole lot, but it was amazing. My server was very nice and explained everything very well. The food came out quickly, and was nice and hot, and it was a really great presentation. I'll be back to try some other dishes soon!

Patra K.

Yelp
I really enjoy the lunch specials but do not like eating out of a bento box. wonton and hot and sour soup is wonderful as are the egg rolls.

Tori C.

Yelp
I really enjoyed Chengs! I get why everyone comes here and recommends it on Yelp. I had the ants climbing trees and pork dumplings. Both meals were delicious and I had leftovers. The venue is serene and really updated. I've never been in the building before but I felt very impressed with the service and ambiance. Only issue is the price--def on the expensive side of eating! While I'd have to have it as a treat I believe I'll be coming back.

Teresa W.

Yelp
This place has great Chinese food and we love it. The place is nice on the inside and they have lots of parking. If I'm Saint Jude hungry for Chinese. This is where I'm coming to. There is nothing I've tried that I didn't like

CAROLYN B.

Yelp
The food and service was excellent. Have to go back for some other dishes that sounded really good. Shrimp fried rice and wonton soup was excellent also. Dinning room was very nice.

Theresa P.

Yelp
Stopped in for an early dinner as we were passing through. The food was delicious and the service was amazing. We ordered Mongolian beef and General Tso's Chicken and every bite was delicious. Highly recommend Chengs if you are looking for delicious Chinese cuisine.

Keith G.

Yelp
Came down for a football Bowl game & found this gem of a restaurant! Great service & food. Oh, and EatEmKats!

Cess B.

Yelp
Chengs was great! Try the Black pepper steak and combo fried rice with crab Rangoon. Everything was seasoned well, the service was prompt, and it was actually filling. Would recommend.

Sandy M.

Yelp
The location is a little hard to get to if you use Apple Maps. However, I would consider the location convenient because it's right off the highway. The dining room is cozy and intimate. The service was excellent! The owner came to check on us several times, which was nice. The food is amazing! A nice presentation and a pretty impressive kick on the spicy dishes! The only downsides that I can think of are: 1) the dining room is uncomfortably hot. I was wearing a tank top and shorts, and I felt on the brink of dripping sweat. 2) the dining room is eerily quiet. The TV had a show on but no sound and there is no music or anything playing in the background. Overall a great dining experience with a pleasant atmosphere!

Erika A.

Yelp
This was our first visit here! Not many people at first, but a nice steady crowd. We were greeted with a smile and our server was extremely attentive. The food came out fast and tasted fresh. If you like spicy, this is your place. This is just overall a tasty spot to eat. The prices are comparable to PF Chang's, but I think you get more of a non-commercial flavor.

Kasey G.

Yelp
Such a nice chinese restaurant, food was great and environment clean, staff was friendly with great service

Kelly M.

Yelp
OMG!! Yall this place was SO good. 10/10. The service, the atmosphere, the food. All deserves an A+ Ill definitely be back!!!

Alex M.

Yelp
Terrible shrimp fried rice. Thats bad when its worst than anywhere else. Everything else was good but man use the wok for your fried rice

Suzanne B.

Yelp
Delicious food and outstanding service. This is my new favorite place to get chinese food.

Ladawna K.

Yelp
We ordered the sweet and sour chicken. Shrimp Schezwan, and crab Rangoon's. All were simply amazing. Staff is very friendly

Jessica B.

Yelp
My new favorite Chinese restaurant. Mr. Cheng and his wife are the same every time I come and go: nice, sweet, accommodating. They are always welcoming and hospitable!

Kami C.

Yelp
This is probably the best chinese food I've ever had in my life. The lunch portion was magnificent. Getting a fresh side salad was a surprise, it was so lovely to have something like that to balance the meal. The food came out very hot and fresh. A hidden gem truly.

ErinaShaye H.

Yelp
Great service, super hospitable owners who were so kind to us while we were there! The food was fantastic as well, we will definitely be coming back again soon! We ordered spring rolls, a scallion pancake, shrimp fried rice, and Sichuan beef with white rice! Everything was delicious and hot! The restaurant was clean and well kept, you can tell the owners and their employees take great pride in keeping the restaurant in a nice condition! We devoured everything on our plates shortly after they arrived (especially those super yummy appetizers!) highly recommend this place!! Also, the owners were so kind to give our two year old daughter a few cookies which was so sweet!!

Chasity A.

Yelp
Best authentic Chinese food. Everything is so fresh, clean, and delicious! Service is awesome as well.

Cameron S.

Yelp
Our family of 5 enjoyed a fantastic dinner. The restaurant is very clean, the staff is friendly and the food is super yummy. BEST Chinese in Baton Rouge.

Allison D.

Yelp
We have loved this place for a long time. I'm not sure what happened. The food doesn't even look the same as it used too and it certainly doesn't taste the same. So sad

Kaka L.

Yelp
The food and atmosphere was great Good service and location. I find them to be expensive.

jacob a.

Yelp
Man oh man my first visit will definitely not be my last visit! The atmosphere was unique and the service was great, with recommendations on what's fan favorites and a few personal choices steered me to an off menu Singapore mei fun that reminded me of my childhood spot. Thanks for the experience again!

Corbin T.

Yelp
This is my favorite Chinese food in Baton Rouge!! Many people raved about this place to me, so I had to check it out. Went in on a Thursday night during the holidays and was surprised to be the only table in the establishment. That was a little worrisome, but those worries went away when the place quickly become flooded with people. Guess we beat the rush. We were greeted by the owner, who was friendly and welcoming, and we had a great waitress who knew the menu like the back of her hand. She recommended I get the Szechuan beef, and it was incredible!! Large portion (that I ate all of), vegetables on the side, and really good flavor. To compare these flavors to PF Chang's or any other takeout Chinese joint in BR would be doing this place a disservice, I can't quite put it into words. They're also very fairly priced! 2 entrees, 2 drinks, and a tip put us around $60. For the quality of the meal, the service, and the satisfaction in my soul, I'll happily eat here again.

Eric G.

Yelp
I've gone back to Cheng's a few more times and I'm happy to report that it's consistently good! The beef chow fun is great. I wish there was a way to see the specials other than in their lobby, because that's where the interesting dishes live...imo.

Nate H.

Yelp
Food was amazing, finally found a good Chinese place in BR! Nice staff, friendly, courteous, food was HOT to order! Even though the road they're on is rough, in interior is pristine. Will be back here again!

Erin M.

Yelp
Nom nom. I am hardly ever on this side but I kept hearing about this place so I had to come try it. We got there right after the lunch rush so we were promptly seated and greeted. Standard Chinese fare with several unique dishes as well. Both dishes we ordered were fresh and tasty. The fried rice was surely on top of the list of one of the best fried rice dishes I have had. I believe the lady that helped us was one of the owners. She told us about another entree to try on our next visit that sounded really interesting. I will take a drive to come back here!

Isela W.

Yelp
From out of town. Ordered to go, great service. The food is AMAZING. I highly recommend this place.

Tammy B.

Yelp
The service was great. Our food came out quick and everything was delicious. I really enjoyed the pork and vegetable dumplings. The portions were large too.

ge c.

Yelp
A nice casual place with delicious food. The pleasant staff and their service make for an enjoyable lunch.

Felix G.

Yelp
Its ok Chinese food. Very pricey for the quality. The spicy chicken plate was real good. With an egg roll and coke it came out to over $30 with tip.

Lorena J.

Yelp
Hidden Gem in Louisiana! very fresh Chinese food. we tried this place on our road trip to Florida.

Genevieve F.

Yelp
The Chinese food was good and the employees were nice but the place was full of faux pas' in my opinion. First, there was no sushi because they didn't have the staff. I get it, but that's why we came. Secondly, their menu wasn't very large for a Chinese menu without sushi. Third, I know everything on their menu is available pre-made so I wasn't impressed. I got the scallion pancakes and I saw no scallions. They tasted good, but were a bit greasy and sans scallions. I got the Chinese wings and they were good but not great. And I got soup and I can say ditto. I ordered an Old Fashioned and for the price I sort-of hit my money's worth. Too many ice cubes and not enough booze. It even had a maraschino Cherry and not the real kind. SMH!

Bill C.

Yelp
Sooooo in the never ending search for where we are going to eat we found Chengs! Most times when art crosses food portions are small and the price tag is large. Chengs brings you a nice plate garnished with shredded cabbage and a rose carved from a carrot and some parsley. Wonderful presentation! Our server was right at the table when we sat down, all smiles. Julie had pepper steak and I had Mongolian beef. The sauce was perfect, it clings to your food and has a nice shine to it. It's smooth and perfectly seasoned! It's a spotless restaurant with comfortable seating, not too crowded. There's art all over and nice wood floors. It's clean, spotless in fact! There's a full bar the place is well lit and easy to move around. The owner came over to make sure we had all we needed. I'm going to say it again, the food is awesome! I ate it all!! The crab Rangoons are really tasty and comes with a sweet sauce. We will come back!!!

Josh M.

Yelp
Very tasty food, very kind staff. We had the Kuhn Pao chicken which had lots of flavor and plenty of food. The chicken fried rice was also delicious. Not too much soy sauce and plenty of chicken. The fried donuts for dessert were awesome! Tasted like a beignet, perhaps a little better even. We plan on going back and trying other menu items. The food was certainly above average for Chinese food.

Joni G.

Yelp
This was the first time we tried this restaurant since it opened over a year ago and boy were we pleased with the food! We ordered four take out dishes for dinner (Pan Fried Pork Dumplings, Mongolian Beef with Fried Rice, Five Spice Chicken and the Spicy Fish Oil Soup) all of which were delicious. The Five Spice Chicken and the Spicy Fish Oil Soup did not disappoint on the spiciness or flavor. They had tons of flavor and were extremely spicy my mouth was tingling and nose was running after the first bite. I am so sorry we did not try this place sooner. A must try if you like Asian food. It is easily one of the best Asian restaurants we have tried in Baton Rouge.

Kevin P.

Yelp
Awesome ownership. AWESOME FOOD. Best in Baton Rouge!!! Friendly staff, must try Kung Chicken Spicy!!!!

Christy T.

Yelp
We ordered take out from here when we visited family in Baton Rouge. They order from here quite a bit. We had a bunch of appetizers and a couple other meals that everyone shared. All the food we had was great! Kinda pricey but not surprising.

Christine Y.

Yelp
Another amazing authentic Chinese food restaurant has popped up yet again here in Baton Rouge. When I first moved here 6 months ago, all I could find was Americanized Chinese food always deep fried and slathered in sugary sauces with weirdly colored yellow rice. Don't get me wrong, I like that stuff too but Chinese food is so much more than chop sueys and some general's chicken. I just had such a great meal at Cheng's and I desperately want this place to succeed so I can keep having home-y Chinese food to pick up after a long day of working in the hospital. *****If you want to try the real stuff- I would get this combination of plates below!!! Probably would feed at least 4 people. This is my go-to order at any Chinese restaurant: Fish Filet in Spicy Sichuan Oil - MY FAVORITE! This is tender slices of white fish in a flavorful, spicy, umami broth. It's the right amount of spice that doesn't linger on your tongue for too long Eggplant with Garlic Sauce - Eggplants cooked in this addicting and slightly sweet sauce. A really good contrast in addition to the mentioned spicy and salty dishes Five Spice Fried Chicken - This is juicy nuggets of fried chicken perfectly seasoned- reminds me of Taiwanese Popcorn Chicken Walnut Shrimp - Jumbo prawns, deep fried, in a sweet creamy sauce. Shrimp is juicy and tender So good. So excited this place is here. So excited to keep supporting this mom and pop run place serving food I miss after moving here.

Jeffrey D.

Yelp
The Best Chinese Restaurant in Baton Rouge, LA.! If, your looking for the real Chinese flavor! This is the place! Try the Eggplant with pork in the house sauce! They don't have hot pot. But, the home style beef in hot chili sauce/ soup is great! I really liked the Hong Kong style noodles with beef! Very nice owner and staff!

Mark W.

Yelp
We decided to try this place. Reviews looked promising. The service was great. Staff was friendly. But the food was somewhat of a disappointment. Some of the crab rangoons barely had anything in them. Gave the impression they were frozen, not fresh. The sweet and sour chicken was average. Fried rice good. My wife had the general Tso chicken. It had an unusual flavor...not what we expected.

James S.

Yelp
Best Chinese food I've ever had. Fresh high quality ingredients and great service. I had the shrimp Wonton Soup and Mongolian beef. I will definitely eat here again!

Blake F.

Yelp
Pleasantly surprised with the food. Quality, presentation, and quantity are all top-notch.

Madison C.

Yelp
Really impressive! I live nearby in Ascension parish where there is ZERO decent Chinese. I had a real craving for some good Chinese and wanted a good dine in option- tricky combo. Yelp led me to Cheng's and I am very glad I have it a try. Started with the crab Rangoons which were fantastic. I usually never eat them with the sauce they come with but these were fantastic with and without it. For entrees we got the szhezuan chicken and Mongolian beef. Both were fantastic, served beautifully and had great heat without being too spicy. Only reason I took off a star were the sides. I was expecting amazing fried rice and lo mein noodles but both just fell a little short. I wasn't wowed by the flavor of either and the lo mein almost had a ginger taste to it which threw me off. Honestly the entrees were so great I think they would've been just fine with the white rice but I really enjoy a good fried rice. Will be back soon and can't wait to try more of the menu

Noelle M.

Yelp
Nice to have this Chinese food restaurant in Baton Rouge! When it opened it was like we finally have a good option here. The staff is super friendly. We really like the appetizers--crab puffs obviously...but the main dishes are enjoyable too.

Jp C.

Yelp
I was excited to see a new locally owned sit down Chinese food restaurant here in Baton Rouge so had to check it out as soon as I could. This place does not disappoint! The freshness of the food and the services is incredible. Philip the owner/manager wanted a true critique of his food after I was done to see if there was anything he could do better. The answer was absolutely nothing! Nothing needs to change here! I ordered the Kung Pao chicken - lunch portion. I'd highly suggest it. The sushi was delicious, this coming from someone who typically doesn't eat sushi.
