Seeking a late night find for a fav French dish, Steak frites, ventured out to recently opened "La Brasserie" after walking by few days earlier. And with a full 5-star Yelp review, figured I'd give them a try. But alas, my fellow yelpers, let me down and keeping forget that new restaurant review rule of thumb, never trust a new joint with less than 10 reviews, especially when they're all 5's!
That out of the way, the restaurant itself is spacious, with typical old school French decor. Hostess and all waitstaff, extremely professional and friendly, service is definitely top notch. But as we all know when heading out to "eat" it's the "food," that ultimately counts the most. And unfortunately on that account, La Brasserie, misses the mark. Everything is just OK. It typically starts with the bread. For the most part, if a restaurant serves you first with complimentary bread and it's off the chart, 9 times out of 10, the meal that follows will be off the chart as well. So the bread was warm, always a good sign, but nothing special, just ok, but when you're hungry, you sorta let your guard down, and hope that what follows will break that mold. But the escargot that followed, (served warm in a dish, Not piping hot in a escargot plate in butter, garlic and parsley) was a sign that this night was not to be. Needless to say, the steak frites that followed did not live up to expectations; and at approx. $43 def had expected better; with a glass of wine entire bill was about $83.
Since they've recently opened, perhaps the chef and management are still working out the kinks, but as it stands now, La Brassiere is not ready for prime time imho and doubt will be going back anytime soon, especially with so many other great French restaurants in the city. But please give them a try as perhaps an off night and with the city just starting to get back on its feet, most restaurants need all the support they can get.
