Chez Potier - Review - Old Montreal - Montreal - The Infatuation

"We love Chez Potier’s wide variety of precisely constructed French pastries and handmade chocolates. This specialty shop and bakery on a quiet street at the eastern end of Old Montreal is a place to keep going back to, if only for the ever-changing flavors of millefeuilles (we’ve seen lemon, raspberry, and passionfruit). There’s more than beautifully crafted sweets here, though—Chez Potier also has a carefully curated gourmet grocery selection, and stocks everything you might need for a picnic, including Portuguese sardines, pâtés, cheeses, and picture-perfect sourdough baguettes with delightfully pointy, crunchy ends. Grab a jar of their vanilla caramel with sea salt to spread on pretty much anything (or eat straight from the jar)." - Ivy Lerner-Frank

The Best Bakeries and Pastry Shops in Montreal | Eater Montreal

"In one of the latest additions to the ever-changing Cité du Multimédia area, pastry chef Olivier Potier opened up shop in a ground floor space on Wellington Street in 2021. He’s offering everything from delicately made cakes and a delightful kouglof (a traditional Alsatian brioche) to savoury pastries and gourmet groceries." - Daniel Bromberg

Staff was so kind, allowed me to practice my French rather than switching to English upon hearing my accent. The store was very cool, so many different international delicacies. NOLA Cheesecake (photo) was délicieux! Fresh with citrus flavors and nice sweetness coming from the white chocolate outer layer. Somehow this dessert managed to be light and creamy and pack a flavor-punch all at the same time. So many different crunchy and smooth textures too. YUM!!!! Side note-yes there is a grapefruit slice on top; I do not like grapefruit and I LOVED this dessert.

Chez Potier is not your average café—this place *levels up* the pastry experience in every way. The moment you walk in, you feel the refined yet welcoming vibe that sets the tone for what’s to come. It’s a beautifully curated space that blends the elegance of a European pastry boutique with the warm charm of a local favorite. The pastry selection is nothing short of stunning—each piece genuinely looks like a work of art. I tried their in-house hot chocolate and was impressed by the rich flavor. You can really taste the quality cocoa, though I personally would’ve preferred it less frothy and a touch darker. That said, it was still a delight to sip. I paired the hot chocolate with a strawberry cream pastry that showcased real craftsmanship. It featured four distinct layers: a silky vanilla cream on top that was absolutely decadent, followed by a refreshing middle layer of strawberry accented with fresh mint, and finished with a touch of fresh strawberry on the side. The base was a little firmer and drier than I’d like, but it didn’t take away from the overall flavor, which was still thoughtfully composed and delicious. Service here deserves a shoutout—attentive, knowledgeable, and warm. Their recommendations were spot-on, and it’s clear they take pride in what they do. Beyond pastries and coffee (which is in-house brewed, by the way), they offer a selection of fine European goods including Italian delicacies, French products, truffle oil, and even caviar. Chez Potier has a lot to offer and then some. I’m already looking forward to going back and trying more. A must-visit for pastry lovers, café connoisseurs, or anyone looking to indulge in a little edible art.

It was hard to choose a pastry with so many tempting options, but I ended up with the Carre Dore Signature and an oat milk latte—both were delicious! Prices are reasonable, and there’s a great variety of unique gift items, like different types of salts. The staff were incredibly friendly and knowledgeable. A fantastic spot all around!

Highly recommend the Rose lychee dessert and the caramel circle (not pictured). A bit pricy but worth the treat! The service was kind of bad. The servers seemed annoyed that they have to do their work.

Extremely fancy cakes that were beautiful. The rose one with rose and lychee flavour was immaculate. The flavours were strong, and the combination of the rose and lychee flavour was perfection. I could eat on every day. The other two (one with grapefruit and one with yuzu+raspberry) were also yummy but not on the same level as the rose. Service was just ok. Everyone was just standing there staring at us, and no one seem eager to help. (There is a little fridge section in the back of the store with French butter).

Such a lovely place for croissants (the most beautiful I’ve ever seen, and the texture has such flaky, lightly crispy layers) and really delicious cannelés and brownies. Also, was thrilled to find items that are hard to find in the US like fromage blanc and rillettes aux truffes. Also had some more local products like cultured butter and smoked salmon from PEI. We found some beautifully packaged items that were reasonably priced for gifts as well. The older gentleman who helped us was very nice! Will be back the next time we are in Montréal.

Great bakery/pastry place that doubles up as a fancy gourmet store. Interior decoration is not bery inviting, uses dark colors that do jot provide a cosy café vibe. Great service.

As an average guy who enjoys good food, here’s my HONEST take: The food is good, but… It doesn’t quite offer a game-changing taste experience. The utensils are fancy but not very practical; the fork was "too small" for cracking into some of the dishes. While everything we tried looked appealing, the flavors were quite familiar. Unfortunately, we didn’t have a moment of "WOW, this is new," which was a bit disappointing given the rave reviews. Don’t get me wrong; the food tasted great and we enjoyed each bite. However, for the price and expectations set, there are plenty of excellent alternatives in Old Port. The service was great, and the location was cozy, bright, and inviting. We will definitely give it another try, but based on this first experience, we’ve had better for the same price and quality elsewhere. This place seems more like a treat-yourself spot, and I understand that appeal. I still recommend it because you might discover something you love, but for me, it was simply a good experience.
