ChikaLicious has been on my radar for a while but I've never had a chance to check it out. I finally took an opportunity to visit as part of my birthday celebration weekend in February. I stopped by on a Saturday evening around 8pm. They do not accept reservations, you can simply walk in and state your party size. It is a small space though, so it wouldn't hurt to call ahead if your party is big. I came by myself and got seated immediately. Overall seating was almost at capacity at the time however; it seems customers come and go within a fair amount of time.
Aside from space, ChikaLicious is set within a cozy, intimate space with calm lighting. I have previous experiences with dessert bars, so this was an opportunity for me to try a new place and experience some delicious treats. Diners can enjoy their desserts at the counter where you can see your dish being made, or have a seat at the cozy seating behind the counter. Once seated, I was offered a menu to review. I decided to partake in the 3-course tasting, which is $26. The tasting includes a mini palate cleanser, a plated dessert of your choice, and petit fours. It seems some of the menu items change often, so although you may be really interested in what I review here, it may not be available on the day you visit. Nonetheless, it would still be worth visiting (and I'll tell you why :-) ). In addition to the 3-course tasting, there are some a la carte items for take-out. Drinks (with the exception of water) are not included but available for purchase.
The menu seems to be a fusion of American, European, and Asian influenced desserts with good presentation and infusion of flavors. For my first course (amuse Bouche), I was offered kiwi marinated in lavender with a side of coconut crème. For me, lavender is such an underrated floral spice and somewhat unconventional from what I'm used to, BUT I get excited to try it because if it's used the right way, it can be so delicious. THIS dish was nothing short of delicious! The kiwi was chopped almost like shaved ice, so the texture blended nicely with the crème. In addition, the taste was refreshing and having it paired with the crème gave it such a light and delicate flavor that made me want more.
Next up, I opted for the Fromage Blanc Island cheesecake, which is their signature dessert. The presentation is impressive and synonymous with its name. Ultimately, it was not as great as I had anticipated based on what I have read. The dish is not an actual cheesecake. It is composed of fromage blanc (a type of cheese) and topped with a soupy crème. The dessert bowl is then presented on a bed of shaved iced, essentially giving you the feel or visual of a dessert on an island. The texture is very soft and creamy. There is also a subtle sweetness but overall it was bland in my opinion. Almost like a mild cheese in a pool of milk. It was nice to try but I would not order it again in the future. To round out my meal, I was offered petit fours consisting of 3 bite sized treats. I'm not exactly sure what they were but 1 tasted like a milk chocolate drop and another tasted like a marshmallow dusted in coconut. All very good. Some of the other offerings on the menu seemed really impressive and I wish I could've tried maybe 2 additional ones but I don't think I could've eaten that much. In particular, there was black truffle ice cream on cognac crème brulee. I sat and watched them create it and the presentation was very nice, folks also seemed to enjoy it. There was another dish that included a butternut squash soup - this seemed innovative and unconventional for what I would think of when I hear "dessert bar".
In terms of service, staff were kind and welcoming. I had no issues and they allowed me time to enjoy each course with ease. Chika, the owner, was also present and so sweet! She greeted me and spoke a little about her menu. Overall it was a good experience and I will definitely return. I would also recommend ChikaLicious to others. It's an ideal and unique experience for a date. It's also a nice space to connect with a small group of friends or go solo, like I did.
