Chi'Lantro - South Lamar Review - South Lamar - Austin - The Infatuation

"Chi’Lantro is probably best-known for their kimchi fries that catapulted them to popularity when they first opened their food truck back in 2010, but now there are multiple locations across the city, so you’re never too far from their Korean-Mexican fusion food. ." - Nicolai McCrary

Google
The food is awesome and people are so friendly and nice. You can get greens and proteins in a single bowl with brown rice as base. Perfectly balanced. The Kimchi Fries are superb! Love it.

Google
Cilantro is a Korean and Mexican style fusion fast food restaurant. I discovered it from Shark Tank a few years ago. They have several different types of rice bowls, my favorite one is the b’bimbap. The sauce is great and I like it especially with a couple of extra eggs. They also have great fountain Stubborn sodas and lemonade.

Google
I like this place, a Korean bowl/"burrito" with tasty meat and veg choices. The kpop chicken is delicious if you're not watching your calorie intake. My daughter loves the tofu.

Emma Cartwright

Google
Soft and supple tofu caressed the inside of my mouth with its warm and loving juice. Ratatouille style moment but to the best lay of my life. Also excellent customer service.

Google
It’s one of the amazing Tex-Mex cuisine, so delicious and the drinks are so fresh, the cuisine is so delightful with authentic taste.. My favourite dish is Buddha bowl, highly recommended I’ll spread the word to my friends colleagues, it’s so delicious for branch, lunch, dinner .. Family gatherings they have meals for the kids as well..

Google
I was nostalgic for the food truck so stopped in for a kimchi fries and a bulgogi burger, but the brick and mortar is a bit different. It's set up like a Chipotle with everything already prepared and scooped into bowls. This is a good option to be quick, but not what I was expecting. The fries were great, but also cost $17 after adding protein and a tip.

The Truth

Google
LOVE this location & service is always great. My go to of the kimchi fries is never a fail. The basil peach lemonade is awesome- just wish they had larger cup size to choose from .

Google
Chi'Lantro serves really good food. The issue is that it used to serve great food. Their bowls are good but their burger that is now no longer regularly served was great. The kimchi fries are really good and should be tried. This is a healthy choice and you will enjoy yourself. Just know that Chi'Lantro used to be probably the best food truck in Austin, and now it's another pretty good restaurant there instead.

Yelp
The BEST Late-Night Fuel After an Austin FC Win Chi'Lantro is an absolute lifesaver and a well-deserved 5-star spot in my book! After an exciting Austin FC game, we were craving that perfect "drunk snack" and decided to swing by Chi'Lantro right before closing. What really stood out was how incredibly accommodating the staff was. Unlike some other places that give you the side-eye when you walk in just before they close, the Chi'Lantro team was super nice and didn't bat an eye. It made the experience so much better! We decided to keep it simple and just shared an order of the Original Kimchi Fries, and I am SO glad we did. Holy moly, what a perfect choice! The portion was generous, easily enough for two people looking for a substantial snack without overdoing it. And the flavor? Absolutely out of this world. It was that perfect kind of "fatty in a good way" richness, bursting with savory, tangy, and spicy notes from the caramelized kimchi, tender meat. It was exactly what we needed: flavorful, satisfying, and just the right amount of indulgence after a fun night out. If you're ever at an Austin FC game looking for the ultimate post-game or late-night bite, check it out!

Yelp
What a pleasant unexpected find! After a dental appointment, I walked down the sidewalk and literally ran into Chi'Lantro for a quick bite to eat. My mind mused what can I eat today that fits into the vegan bucket. So I decided to have a custom bowl...yes, that's the way to go. I started with sweet potato translucent noodles as my base, added protein of tofu and added red cabbage to my bowl. My bowl was brought together with a sesame vinaigrette dressing. So good...the sweet potato noodles were delightful to eat...smooth and soft with almost a gelatin feel gliding down your throat. The tofu was lightly crisp on the outside and smooth inside. The cabbage add that needed texture crunch. Sesame dressing...so, so, so good! The place was packed with the lunchtime crowd. However, the servers were very calm in the execution of their duties. They were super friendly and made suggestions for your dining delight. I will definitely go back again and try other non-vegan options!

Yelp
Korean Chipotle, sick! Japchae is somehow 12g of protein? If that's true I'm excited but most japchae is pretty low in protein since it is sweet potato, so I'd be surprised. For a chicken japchae bowl I was calculating 70g of protein with cheese (nutrition from their website). Also spicy chicken is 38g of protein under 4oz which doesn't even add up with regular chicken breast. I was only invested because I was going crazy on boba and I needed to balance with some protein. If the nutrition is accurate, I have no idea where they're sourcing ingredients. Regardless, I'll continue to order the japchae because it is pretty tasty anyways, plus it's fairly unique. Anyway, this was an amazing find and I'm very grateful for the convenience of this location. Bowls look small but they're fairly filling and decently nutritious, even if the math isn't mathing.

Yelp
The food is a perfect blend of Korean and chipotle style servings. The kimchi fries are a must have! Please add the beef to it you will not regret it. Glad we stopped here on our visit.

Yelp
Decent parking, vibey playlist, and tasty food. I was actually surprised because the options look very simple and it's not like a Cava or Chipotle that has rice and beans and toppings but with lots of other ingredients in them. This was cleaner but packs tons of flavor and for things like veggies and herbs, they really pop and create a lot of freshness which was so yummy. My drink reminded me of Cava options that are slightly sweetened but very refreshingly and the serving size was plentiful. Also nice touch if you are dining in, they provide you a ceramic bowl which has a nice touch and a nod to sustainability. I haven't been to the location closest to me but can't wait to try it. I've heard about this place for a while and it did not disappoint plus it's in a great plaza with other great stores.

Yelp
I love the k'poo chicken bowl. We always get it for our lunch meeting at work. The chicken is always crunchy and the bowl always fills me up! I love that I can customize to my liking!

Yelp
Fast to-go dinner. Chi'Lantro offers a build-your-own option. Ingredients are fresh, portions are generous. Brown rice/mixed green base topped with marinated tofu, kimchi, and all the veggies. Korean esquites and magic sauce add a bit of sweetness. The bowl is big but still recommend getting the fries. Made fresh, served hot, topped with kimchi, cheese, sriracha, and magic sauce = guilty goodness.

Yelp
This is one of my goto places for lunch during the week. I loved it when I ate meat and I love it now when I eat veggies. Their tofu is outstanding and I load up a bowl with ALL the vegetables, topped with their salsa and carrot ginger dressing. 10/10 would recommend!

Yelp
I wasn't wowed by this place. It's just a Korean/Mexican fusion. Almost like a chipotle, but with a twist. The prices are kinda high for what it is. A salad bowl. Lol They do give a good amount of meat though, so they don't skimp on you. Flavors are good, almost every thing is spicy, so my kids couldn't really eat anything! Good drink choices, I like that the sodas aren't huge corporations like Pepsi or coke but more of the sugar cane local soda options! The a/c was blowing directly onto us and made it so cold for us to sit there eating but my husband didn't want to move. There might have been a slight disconnect with the employees having a hard time understanding or hearing what we were saying so we pretty much had to point to the menu to order.. even then asking for salsa on the side and repeating ourselves over and over was strange...

Yelp
Amazingly fresh food that just blew my mind! Service is prompt and quick. I really enjoyed my experience there.

Yelp
First time at this location. The servers were nice and very helpful, offering suggestions like the Magic Sauce (a must have). Chi'Lantro is one of my go-to food spots here in Austin and a good place for groups of 4-8. There there plenty of long tables and the ambiance is calm yet efficient.
google avatar

Yelp
We love chilantro. Had to come to this location bc the one on parmer was closed. The staff were super friendly and there was no wait when we arrived. I love the tofu here it's full of flavor and crispy at the same time. You honestly cannot go wrong with anything on the menu. They are a bit pricey but it's quality food and large portions.
google avatar

Kri A.

Yelp
When we went in at 9 PM, the service was awesome and the food was so delicious. I've been to other Chi'Lantro locations around Austin and this was the best one I've tried, which prompted me to write this review. I love this place because you get a lot of food for your money, you can definitely split this up for lunch and have left overs for dinner and feel satisfied. The noodles blended excellently with the Spicy Pork and the veggies were fresh. I got the magic sauce on the side which I strongly recommend if you like spicy sauces, the heat level is not overpowering and so delicious at the same time. The location was very chill and welcoming I strongly recommend going!

Yelp
Korean-Mex fusion with Korean Fries! Plenty of toppings, and plenty of sauce to keep your box mixed together. However, I felt that they didn't give enough meat or fries, but too much cabbage/toppings/vegetables. I'd like a box with more meat, fries, and sauce. Price is a little high for the size box that they give you, and although we shared it between 2 people, it definitely felt like a small snack. Overall, quick service in this fast-casual spot, and I would recommend it to anyone who's looking for a Korean-Mex experience. Not my go-to spot, but a good option.

Yelp
Everything --Delicious as always Magic sauce a must! Chicken n steak is my favorite! Sweet potato noodles are bomb!

Danny A.

Yelp
DO NOT ORDER TOGO PAST 7PM Drastic drop in quality with the night crew: they forgot my drink-the drink I was given was 1/3 foam, 1/3 ice, and 1/3 peach lemonade. Should've checked my food after watching them get my foam lemonade, they forgot my avocado that was supposed to come with my bowl. Probably will go to another location or not go back at all.

Yelp
I see there was an ATTEMPT to fuse Korean & Mexican food but to me, didn't come out very good. From what I've tried, flavors are very mid and nothing was impressive enough for me to want to eat here again. Queso and chips were ok, that would be difficult to F up. K Pop Chicken was actually horrendous, full of scrap little pieces with texture and taste of cardboard. Bibimbap bowl was really sad, mostly veggies and little bits of meat. No thanks.
google avatar

Yelp
Korean BBQ-inspired cuisine hits its peak at Chi'Lantro. Every dish packs a strong punch (but not too aggressive!) with fun flavors, such as their Gangnam sauce, fresh veggies, and plenty of cilantro. The Korean Fried Popcorn chicken is super crispy, with tender meat and tossed in sauce. Rice bowls, ssäm (think: Korean ingredients in a tortilla), and crunchy fries shine bright on the menu. You can also build your own bowl - have it your way!
google avatar

Yuna K.

Yelp
I've been wanting to try this place for a while and was looking for a place to eat after working out and this place hit the spot. Its quick and the employees here and so friendly and there are plenty of tables here to enjoy your food. The price is super reasonable and they give you a lot of meat. Its basically kind of like chipotle but mixed with korean fusion which I liked.
google avatar

Yelp
Chi lantro was recommended to me via a friend that has been in Austin for 10+ years. I can only assume that things have changed since she had been here last because I cannot in good conscience recommend this place. it's set up like Chipotle with a bar of toppings and sides to add to your bowl. this restaurant is relatively clean and the food is ok but where they get you is the price. I've never be so dissatisfied with a meal. They charge $14+ tax and tip for fries. $16 + tax and tip for Korean fried chicken. It is way over priced and the food mediocre. How can they call these wings korean fried chicken? these are regular wings with Asian inspired sauce. If you are looking for a bonchon equivalent, this is not the place. it costs us $40 for two people. I was so hungry after this meal I went and got a 2nd meal somewhere else. Come here if you want mediocre food and to get robbed. plus side, bathroom was clean
google avatar

Yelp
Build-a-bowl style with a Korean motif. The Korean beef and hot chicken were both very good. Nice selection of base, toppings and sauces. Several vegetarian options. The Kimchi fries are a very nice fusion dish. Clean, friendly and not too crowded.
google avatar

Jeff L.

Yelp
As an old haunt from my uni days, it was cool to see Chi'Lantro grow and expand into physical retail stores. But somewhere between then and now, a lot of the magic disappeared and what's left are memories, kim chi fries and a strange build your own Korean fusion bowlrito lineup. The problem being, it's not entirely sure how Korean, how Mexican and how fusion it wants to be and it's very easy to make something that isn't enjoyable, unlike other build your own bowlrito joints (a la Chipotle, Freebirds, etc.) Maybe the trick is to stick to what's premade, what's already been predetermined to be a good mixup of the ingredients laid in front of you, but I miss the days where you could order any taco, any burrito and you knew it was going to be a good time. I'll be back when I need my fix of their kim chi fries, a staple that I'm glad has stuck around since its humble beginnings, but otherwise Chi'Lantro will be another reminder to cherish the things you enjoy in the moment, and savor those new experiences before they change beyond your recognition.

Yelp
First off thanks to the team that served us. I can tell they were short staffed, and beyond busy. Even in this situation they all worked together and were very friendly and helpful through the experience. At the end of our a meal a gentlemen (I wish I would have asked for his name) came and thanked us for our patience and being there. He did not have to do that and I can appreciate this amazing customer service. Now, the food was so fresh and tasty! I was really impressed with their options. At first it seemed simple, but once combined all the flavors popped and it was delicious. I will be back for some more :)

Yelp
We came here while staying at the Hilton Garden Inn down the road. We had never been to Chi'lantro. I left thinking it was a Korean version of Chipotle. The bases are sweet potato noodles, rice (white/brown), or salad base. There are quite a few protein choices. I tried the spicy chicken with an extra portions. I added kimchi and all the vegetables. I also added some pickled onions and spicy ranch/siricha. We also tried the kimchi fries. They were very tasty but the portion was enough to share with a couple people. I think the price is very reasonable in comparison to eating in The Domain. It easy to get to if you are staying at one of the surrounding hotels. We will come back again.
google avatar

Michelle B.

Yelp
While visiting for worked stopped by here for lunch. I wish we had one in Houston. It's like chipotle or something similar in picking your own but soooo much more flavor choices. I loved it and want some now.
google avatar

Hammond H.

Yelp
I went here during restaurant week in Austin. In short, I love the food at this unique fusion Korean restaurant! The B' Bim-Bop with BBQ Beef was my favorite, but again all the bowls are excellent. The Kim Chee fries are incredible! It is all, "Slap your Mama" good". I highly recommend this restaurant!
google avatar

Britt Z.

Yelp
Always on point! My go to is the brown rice bowl with the soy glazed chicken and a bunch of veggies! Thought the wings are my second favorite. Super crispy and flavorful, and I love the sea same seeds they finish them with. Service is fast as you build your meal down the line a pay at the end. If you're unsure what to try, they'll give you great suggestions
google avatar

Pamela R.

Yelp
Food is always amazing but there's issues with ordering online. I ordered chicken and tofu but tonight got Double Tofu without chicken. I recommend the spicy chicken bowl and the salsas.
google avatar

Christopher W.

Yelp
Didn't know what to expect, but it was a pleasant surprise reminding me of Chipotle but obviously with Korean food. Service was great. I'd go again
google avatar

Lauren M.

Yelp
I've seen the reviews (google and Yelp). I hesitated going and didn't go yesterday because it would have been a 5th meal...... But oh. My. Lanta. This isn't the OG Chi'Lantro. This is a heavier spiced and Kimchi flavored location and I am HERE for it!!! Only ordered the kimchi fries plus spicy chicken but oh my god. It was SO fresh, staff was great, and everything about it was FANTASTIC. Almost not comparable to the OG chi'lantro but I enjoy where this location is taking it. I'll be back. Food was fresh. Kimchi was heavy and the $1 add on of chicken was heavier than the kimchi.

Hazel M.

Yelp
I usually love Chi'Lantro, specifically because of how delicious the tofu is. The following review and three stars reflect the tofu ONLY - the staff is always 5 stars, the restaurant is great and clean, and the food concept is great and easy to accommodate a variety of tastes. The tofu used to be small, crispy, and juicy and even my friends who ate meat would pick the tofu because of how great it was! Over the past few months, the location that we visit (Austin Domain) started making the tofu REALLY big, and now it tastes watery. Please bring back the small tofu, and press it or do whatever you used to that made it so delicious! Whatever the previous recipe was - please revert to that!!! The big tofu is not appetizing and is very watery.
google avatar

Kerra S.

Yelp
So freaking good. The ordering is chipotle style but with about 20 more options. The build your own bowl has been my go to - the ribeye, kimchi, noodles, magic sauce , it's all so damn good!!! The bowl comes out to usually around $11 (ribeye is $1 extra) , which is incredibly well priced for the amount of food you get. I can't Speak to the atmosphere inside we always pick up and leave, but the food is 10/10!
google avatar

Mariana G.

Yelp
Chi'Lantro is a Chipotle-style Korean BBQ. I got the noodle bowl with Korean BBQ steak, caramelized kimchi, grilled corn and Korean esquites. While I usually love corn, I wasn't a fan of their grilled corn or the esquites. Something about their taste was off. However, I thought the rest of the food was super tasty and I would definitely order the noodle bowl with steak and caramelized kimchi again.

Hailee B.

Yelp
Healthy, fresh, tasty, and quick service! You cant find this combination often! This place has a great lobby too! Plants and art everywhere! I wish I hadn't eaten my food so quick or I would share a pic
google avatar

Mark C.

Yelp
Shrinkflation is alive and well at Chi'lantro. I'm very disappointed in the amount of chicken but especially the queso I was provided. The queso was filled barely over halfway. What happened? They did this last visit too and I had to ask for more because the thing used to be over 3/4 of the way full. The chicken amount was stingy as well. Very disappointing. The food is good but their prices are already high and now getting higher due to less food being provided. This needs to be corrected.
google avatar

Regina R.

Yelp
The food and service is absolutely excellent. The noodles and tofu are the best. I also shared a BIMBAP, i would highly recommend.
google avatar

Roma B.

Yelp
I pick up food from here every time I visit Austin. Got the sweet potato noodle bowl this time and loaded it with spicy chicken and most of the toppings. Huge portion sizes and plenty to share or take home for a second meal. Some of the sauces can be spicy though, especially the salsa.
google avatar

Courtney W.

Yelp
Tasty to-go dinner! I got half japchae noodles half veg with the spicy chicken. Lots of yummy toppings to choose from! I got the magic sauce to top it off. Everything tastes nice and it's a fun way to customize a Korean-inspired meal. It's a pretty large serving, could be two meals depending on how hungry you are. Also the worker purposely spelled everyone's names funny, which was pretty entertaining.
google avatar

John S.

Yelp
First time at this exciting taste on salads and rice bowls. Well worth trying something different than true same old same old. Fresh, spicy, cool and juicy all at the same time. Great service and assistance in our first selection. We will be back!
google avatar

Rafael W.

Yelp
It's a Chilantro, good food at a fair price. Can not say much more than that. Always try the kimchi fries with steak if it's your first time trying it out!
google avatar

Buffy B.

Yelp
First ate at Chi'Lantro on Burnet in 2019 and adored their bowls with fresh ingredients and outstanding queso & chips! Then, was delighted to see them featured on Shark Tank and kept on eating there and rooting for their success while also returning to the Parmer and McNeil location. Now? Will not return. Had a $29 Door Dash delivery (on time and before tip) to receive a skimpy bowl with barely any food, missing chips, and cold thickened queso. This also happened for a previous order about a month ago. Ludicrous! Not sure what's going on there but am hopeful they will turn things around and offer better value to customers.
google avatar

Drew T.

Yelp
Oh my gosh, I LOOOVE Chi'Lantro. I ate here so many time last summer and came back today and it was the same great quality. What originally drew me in was the price. It's within walking distance of the Domain Northside, but is MUCH less expensive. I recommend getting the large ssam (burrito) or bowl. You can combine your base, but I love the noodles. If you like spicy, the spicy chicken is a great option, otherwise the soy glazed is good too. Get any toppings you want. And for the people that enjoy a little extra kick, put magic sauce on top. It can be loud and I sometimes have trouble understanding them when ordering, but I always end up with something that tastes delicious. Come here, you won't regret it.
google avatar

Candace S.

Yelp
Chi'Lantro is consistently delicious. Whether we are ordering pick up, delivery, or dining in, we experience the same high-quality and affordable Korean food. The freshness of the ingredients for the price is truly incredible for the Austin area. This is one of our go-to spots--we frequent it at least once every two weeks. I love the Korean beef with the magic sauce, and getting half spicy pork and half beef when I can't decide which I want! My husband and I both order a fried egg with our rice bowls every time. We get the Korean fried wings and fries for the kids, and both options are absolutely delicious. I'm putting 4 stars instead of 5 because of two things: 1. There are times when they don't put enough meat. I would totally order double but sometimes, there's enough, and other times, not so much. I think it varies based on employee. 2. The spicy pork is a little bit too spicy. I love spicy food--I'm an Afro-Puerto-Rican who grew up on spicy food. It's a part of who I am! That said, in my opinion, the spice overpowers the taste and skews the flavors a bit. But everyone is different! It's still good so if you want it, get half of it with another meat like I do :) We love Chi'Lantro. The food and the staff have always been a great experience. We will continue to come here regularly!!!
google avatar

Suzanne R.

Yelp
So delicious! Gluten free options! This taste amazing and is very clean. The people are nice and the service is quick.
google avatar

Samuel P.

Yelp
Ordered kimchi fries via delivery on Uber eats. Definitely tastes better in restaurant but was still good. Fries were cold but probably due to transport time. A little too much sauce for my liking.
google avatar

John S.

Yelp
I have seen this place around and decided to stop in on my lunch one afternoon. I got the Steak Bowl with Jasmine rice. Not amazing but very much not bad. Quick hot and tasty. The tea was not to my liking as it was not just normal tea and I do not like flavors in my Unsweet Iced tea. But that is my personal preference so I will not fault them on that. Nothing stands out among other similar places, (Chipotle, Freebirds etc...) Definitely give them a try and decide for yourself.
google avatar

Alice C.

Yelp
We ordered the kimchi fried with spicy pork and the korean esquites. The kimchi fries were good! Very loaded with toppings and sauce. The fries ended up more like potatoes but that could've just been due to the travel for delivery. Overall, the taste was good and savory/umami enough to satisfy a craving. The korean esquites were a miss for me. The corn was virtually tasteless and the texture was soft and not crunchy like how fresh corn is. The spices were also not flavorful enough.
google avatar

Amanda M.

Yelp
I got sucked in by Shark Tank so had to try it. It was OK. It is as advertised on the show, a Korean Chipotle. You see the ingredients and how they prepare it. The fries were crispy and it was a good amount of bulgogi on the fries. The wings were crispy but the flavoring was off to both of us. The pork meat in the bowl wasn't good quality. While I've been exposed to a lot of Asian cuisine, Korean isn't one of them, so I may be biased in saying the flavors were off. Love the industrial design inside with the exposed ceiling, but the HVAC units aren't wrapped, so condensation dripped onto us and our food.
google avatar

Aaron H.

Yelp
I came here for a dine-in lunch and I was very displeased to find myself eating with a plastic fork. Not only do I not really want to use plastic on my food, but single-use plastic is a huge pollution problem. This plastic just immediately goes into a landfill after annoying me throughout my meal and never biodegrades. What is the point of that? The food was good and the service was fine. But the plastic fork really ruined the meal for me.
