Yelp
Our visit was to the Buerger Center for Advanced Pediatric Care, to see a specialist, so my review is for our experience in this facility, specifically. My son was not inpatient, nor emergency, nor surgery, etc., so our experience is office visit only, not hospital departments.
Luckily, this was not a grievous visit for us. It afforded me the luxury of taking so many photos of this beautiful zillion dollar hospital health complex, & writing about it! (actually $1.5B)
CHoP downtown is so big, comprising so many buildings & specialty centers, that it seems inappropriate to have only one Yelp listing (aside from their separate cafeteria listing). Then again, with only 57 reviews on this one, it seems that the topic of your child's healthcare is a relatively private matter, not a first choice to share on Yelp.
At Buerger, security is a serious matter, without being oppressive. In the lobby, reception gives various ID check questions. They provide each adult a temporary badge, to be worn while visiting. This high-tech badge later turns red, & your name is replaced with "VISITOR" when it expires (see my badge photo, taken the following day). Pretty fancy, & darn secure!
From the entry level, you head to your floor for yet another check-in, this time to confirm all health details, insurance, etc. The metallic sparkle check-in counter was another fascinating touch. There are EIGHT elevators, each with all-glass shafts, reminded me of "Charlie & the Choco Factory." In the elevator, a different child's voice announces each floor. Very cute. In the parking garage, they color code the floors, & pair each level with clip art of a kid's ride-on toy (we parked in the blue tricycle level).
The waiting rooms are large & colorful, with tons of windows, & spectacular views of the city. There is a kids' handprint design on the lower panels of the windows, which casts shadows of the same on the floor nearby. (Knowing it would inevitably be touched by little hands, they surely added this to hide smudges.)
When I encountered one over-the-top kid-friendly detail after another, at first I felt like it was all material, and just intended to distract people on a shallow level, to make the image of a haven for kids. But the staff dynamic felt earnest to me, and made me meditate a little on the word hospitable.
Obviously, your doctoring experience will depend on who you see, and how the medical particulars manifest. Our visit went smoothly, and our follow-up will be more convenient at the KoP location nearer our home. I do appreciate having visited the downtown location, though. I feel at ease in this place both due to the impressive investment in the facility itself, and also the apparent mission of quality care, that comes through in the attitudes of the fixed staffers throughout the center. It certainly gave me confidence to return for other needs if they arise.
The dual check-in system is organized & calm. It made me feel safer in a place where anxiety and unknowns are omnipresent. Everyone was positive, smiling at my son, welcoming us on our first experience at the downtown CHoP, hoping to be useful, etc. This attitude filtered through the other patient families there, and people were on their best behavior, acting totally different than they might a few blocks away on the street. It was an upbeat, friendly experience, which takes energy, & a choice to give that to people, & this is appreciated. It is clear to see administration has invested in human nurture, which is hoped for in any setting, but especially in a hospital, and especially for kids.

Grammar Note: No one follows this, including CHoP themselves, but any grammar book or manual of style will tell you that when creating an initialism, you don't capitalize adjectives such as of! Most acronyms drop adjectives out alltogether, so they don't end up in caps there either. It should be CHoP (little o), like RHoNY or KoP. Little o, okay? Drives me nuts!
*My husband told me this review isn't complete until we get the bill... so if CHoP's billing is anywhere near as bad as Main Line Health's billing, I may be posting a necessary update.
