The Best Mexican Food in Denver | Eater Denver

"The family who runs this colorful, artsy Jefferson Park charmer (complete with a lovely back patio) hails from Puebla, and it shows in a menu built around the region’s specialties. If “poblano” is in the dish description, be it mole or chicken-stuffed crepes, it’s worth a try, though the kitchen’s ultimate claim to fame is its festive chile en nogada — a roasted pepper stuffed with beef, fruit, and nuts beneath a pomegranate seed–sprinkled walnut cream sauce." - Ruth Tobias

Where to Find Mexican Specialties in Denver | Eater Denver

"The family who runs this Jefferson Park fixture hails from Puebla, where local forces prevailed over an attempted invasion by the French in 1862. But the European influence lingers on in the region’s cuisine, as with its affinity for crepes. You’ll find them in savory and sweet incarnations at Chili Verde, along with several other Pueblan claims to culinary fame — most notably the chocolate-tinged, sesame seed–sprinkled mole poblano and the beef-stuffed chile en nogada, distinguished by its use of walnuts and fruits both fresh and dried." - Ruth Tobias

The food was so flavorful and fresh tasting! The service was excellent! They went above and beyond in the service. They were so friendly and did everything with a smile. The Crepe Poblanos was muy delicious!! The Platano Macho was a plantain dessert that was very delicious too. The coconut drink was superb! Go eat here! Upscale taste at reasonable prices.

Google
We ordered take out from them and it was disappointing. The food was overpriced and truly did not look edible. We ordered nachos, ceviche, calamari and shrimp over rice. The shrimp over rice portion was basically a snack; it didnt even fill a whole plate (see the pic). The nachos and ceviche didn’t look good either. The calamari was fine, but definitely not traditional. This was our first restaurant in Denver and unfortunately we ended up extremely dissatisfied.

Google
Amazing food and atmosphere, and the service was excellent! The staff was accommodating of our party size and they gave great recommendations as this was our first time there. Their recommendations didn’t disappoint and we had such a positive dining experience. We’ll be back!!

Google
Our first time here and we'll be back! Such a cute restaurant. My mom said it was the best margarita she had and the chips and salsa were delicious. We each had a shrimp dish and both were excellent and the presentation was beautiful. For dessert we had the plantano macho, which was a perfect way to finish the meal. The service was great and the atmosphere was wonderful. Thank you for a lovely evening!

Have lived in the area for a few years now, but have never gotten around to visiting Chili Verde until tonight—lemme tell ya, big regret waiting this long. The margs we had were very well balanced, had to stop myself from downing too many. The chips came with two salsas and a ridiculously good refried bean bowl. Now the rice. I feel like a lot of Mexican joints just throw a bunch of rice on the plate as a filler or something…but not here. This rice was seasoned with something magic that we could not get enough of. Seriously I’m flabbergasted at how yummy it was. We split the Chiles en Nogada—never heard of such a traditional dish and man was it delicious. So many flavor profiles in a really hearty dish. In my mind, it would be the perfect food item for a Mexican take on a traditional Thanksgiving side dish. Well worth it!

Chili Verde isn't just our favorite restaurant—it’s truly a second home. From the moment you walk in, you're greeted like family. The warmth and kindness of the staff are unmatched, and the owners have become more than just familiar faces—they've become dear friends. But let’s talk about the food: absolutely phenomenal. Every dish is packed with flavor, prepared with care, and consistently delicious! The unique menu is unlike any other Mexican restaurant. We have celebrated birthdays, anniversaries, and even our elopement there. I can’t recommend this place highly enough!

Google
I ordered off-menu; just a bean and cheese burrito. So yummy. Soft warm tortillas filled with rice and tasty refried beans (not runny or meaty), and smothered in melted cheese. My husband got carne asada and proclaimed it best ever. We ordered pick-up, and not only was it packaged, but it was saran wrapped as well. Kept it warm till we got home.

Google
Excellent service from Jeremai and Jeremias, delicious margaritas, and ceviche! This is the perfect quick stop if you’re going to a show or broncos game at the stadium.

Yelp
We really enjoy Chili Verde! Creative entrees and drinks, served by friendly staff. A great ceviche is a must

Yelp
Huge disappointment overall: not gonna rate them a 2 just because they seem like good people and the positives were definitely the freshness of the food and the outdoor patio. But man just so overpriced: we were gonna share fajitas and got the chicken/shrimp combo. Wish I would have taken a pic for proof but no like it was barely a 1/2 chicken breast and THREE pieces of shrimp with 3 fajitas and small portions of rice and guac. Beans n peppers were decent. Then they have the audacity to charge for more chips when they come in like an 8 oz little cup and didn't mention it was extra. Marg was huge which was a plus. I'm sorry but with equally as good Mexican places around with much better portion sizes or cheaper prices, we won't be coming back.

Yelp
We really enjoyed our lunch here. Excellent food and nice atmosphere. We had the mole enchiladas and three soft tacos. Fresh, flavorful, and really satisfying. A notch above most Denver area Mexican restaurants in taste and presentation. Definitely on our list for future visits. The only downside is a super small difficult to maneuver parking lot in back. Next time we'll park on the street.
google avatar

Kim G.

Yelp
What a gem! Yelpers are never wrong and didn't steer me astray for dinner. Beautiful place, not crowded, owner/server was fabulous, mango cocktails were as ridiculously good as it sounds but the mole steals the show (they have green and traditional mole--they'll bring both for a taste test). The traditional mole ("80 ingredients") was the best I've ever had--my kingdom for a vat of it but alas the plates were smallish (chicken and rice were perfect underneath). Go for the mole taste test if not for the salsa macha and fresh homemade guac--this is a new fave.
google avatar

Yelp
The food is outstanding. The owners are brothers from Mexico who are super friendly and do much of the cooking themselves. The flavor combinations are really interesting -- it is not your typical Mexican fare. The prices are very reasonable, too. Chili Verde is probably the neighborhood restaurant I go back to most frequently, which is saying something when there are so many good places to choose from in and around the Highlands.

Yelp
Googling where to eat before leaving to Greece, why not Mexican! Chile en Nogada caught my eyes and stomach, so we came here and it was close to home. Street parking only, but if there are none you can go park in the residential area. We were the only ones there, but a few more came as we ate. The interior and ambiance was nice and it seems as if they have dancing/salsa nights. The bar took up one side of the restaurant, but it was a bit early for drinks....well for the other table. It was 11am, but I guess it's HH somewhere around the world. They served us chips and salsa, beans, and this hot chili. I read about the chili and oh man, it was eye-watering-nose-dripping delicious lol. *note that chips and salsa is not complimentary. We wanted more chips and that was additional $$. Just FYI. My boyfriend ordered 3 soft tacos and he enjoyed the steak the most, then pork, and chicken. He could've done without chicken and ordered another steak. Obviously I ordered the Chile en Nogada and it lived up to it's hype. It was a tad bit too much for me and my boyfriend was happy with his simple tacos. Will come back again when we crave Mexican. Just glad it's close to home.

Yelp
I was so looking forward to this restaurant because of all the awesome online reviews but I was greatly disappointed. The ONLY thing good about this place is their food (although on the pricy end and also on the smaller portion side)--but other than that their servers were super slow, did not understand our orders at all (limited English) so my sister had to translate for her friend, then the restrooms were locked up and the worst part is that there was no AC so it was brutally hot inside. We ended up seating ourselves outside but it was still uncomfortable warm. Parking is also very limited here. I don't think I would be coming back to this place in the future.

Yelp
Friendly staff, amazing food and cocktails and reasonably priced. I orders the moles, half and half and my friend orders the chile verde half and half. 100% recommended.

Gary S.

Yelp
My partner had the Mole Poblano and I had the Chile En Nogada. Both were incredible. The $4 chips, salsa, & beans appetizer was a must for the price. Will be back for sure. High quality food. Service was also 10/10.

Yelp
Looking for some good Mexican food, I remembered this "you can easily drive right by it" place on Federal. It's surrounded by your typical Mexican restaurants--one literally across the street and a half dozen just blocks away. But from its sophisticated storefront design and logo, it hints at something special. Once inside, the restaurant is spacious with high ceilings and interesting, colorful decor. It was a gorgeous day so we chose to sit outside on the patio. The service was quick, attentive and very friendly. I chose two different street tacos, which were amazing! definitely among the best street tacos I've ever had in the Denver area. My partner chose the vegetarian burrito and reported it was very good as well. She would've liked slightly more variety of veggies inside, but reported the taste was top-notch. I won't be forgetting this place any longer - it's going to the top of my list for Mexican food. PS. Even the chips and salsa are far above average. The chips were excellently crispy, and perfectly salted. And you get three different salsas!

Yelp
The best Mexican restaurant I have visited in Denver, Chili Verde, combines atmosphere with exceptional, genuine food with a Puebla origin. It is genuine and so darn good. Located in Federal Heights near a busy intersection, Chili Verde was an exceptional stop on a Saturday night. The weather was spotty, so we elected to sit inside instead of enjoying their inviting outdoor patio. Greta, our server, was friendly, informative, and kind. She never rushed our foursome and made it a terrific experience. The interior was warm, making the entire visit even better and a very cool mural as a centerpiece. I loved the homemade chips (more, please) accompanied by multiple salsas, one red-hot, and I enjoyed it immensely. But the highlight was my dinner choice, Mole Verde, which was presented extraordinarily well and tasted even better. It was an incredible dish and such a unique meal option. My friends enjoyed their respective meals: crepas poblanos and mole poblano, but I wasn't jealous because my choice was phenomenal. Met the owner (Eder) after this amazing meal, and now I see why the place is so darn good. He is from Puebla, Mexico, and embraces his homeland. The whole staff is kind and professional, reflecting his personality. Without a doubt, coming back. It is too good an experience not to visit more frequently.

Bill S.

Yelp
My wife is from Mexico City and she did a thumbs up. Me too. The Pueblo tradition is an excellent cooking tradition, this place does it well, not to mention the best margaritas in Denver IMO. We love Loma. This place is as good.

Christine Y.

Yelp
Great salsas, including a really great bean dip. Great service. Decent prices. I got the house margarita for $8. Th environment is also cozy.

James M.

Yelp
I'm really hoping that I either received someone else's order or maybe this dish doesn't travel well... because damn. That was some cold garbage. Will be going into the restaurant to sit down and give it a second chance, will report back.

Yelp
Each time I've come here, I try to order something different and each time the food has been excellent. The staff have been friendly and the atmosphere is inviting. The owner is amazing!

Yelp
Amazing people, amazing atmosphere, amazing drinks, and amazing food! The owner Eder greeted us, waited for us, and gave killer recommendations. First time and will be back as much as possible.

Yelp
I've been here a couple of times now with a larger group (5 of us) and the service has been impeccable. We've been seated immediately both times, and even when it has been busy, the servers, bartender, busser, and chef have all been friendly and helpful. The restaurant is open, clean, and beautiful inside. I'm really burying the lead here, because the food is phenomenal! They have classics that you can find in Mexico. Today I ordered the Chile en Nogada, and ohhh my goodness. I was so impressed! The flavors and textures were very different than anything I've had before... a little bit sweet, a little bit fruity, but also very creamy and savory. I'm excited to come back and get the same thing again! *chef's kiss*

Yelp
Came here on a weekend night, and it was not very crowded. We got seated easily, and I like the ambience service was friendly too The food has absolutely great flavors, and I will come back for the food . - mole: my favorite - hot salsa: really spicy! I like - I also ordered a beet salad and some guacamole This is a great spot and food was perfect. My only wish is that the portion was bigger for the price

Yelp
Best mole I have ever eaten. Service is great. Nice art on the walls. Great margaritas.

Yelp
Great food and great service! GO HERE!! I've now been twice and my mouth is watering thinking of it now. We ordered the Chili Verde and my partner said it's the best he's had in Denver! I ordered the chicken flautas and they were crispy and perfectly spiced with just a little kick of heat. The chips and salsa and chorizo beans are a must have and their chips are fresh and thin and delicious! Great bar and great outdoor seating area! I can't wait to go again!

Yelp
Discovered this amazing hidden gem on the way home after a long day at a job site. Food, alcohol, and overall ambience is totally worth the visit for night of Spanish fusion cuisine that will leave you full and big smile on your face especially after trying their home made flan! Also shout out the very awesome wait staff here. Looking forward to returning!

Robert M.

Yelp
Have come in a couple of times and have had a great experience every time . Everything I have had on the menu has been incredible. The service is kind and speedy.

Yelp
On a recent trip to Denver, we decided to give this place a shot after finding it on Yelp. Man, this place was amazing. We will be coming here every time we come to Denver. Everything was great from the service, to the food, to the cost. I'm a huge mole fan, and this is probably my favorite as it's spicy. Chips and salsa were even amazing. After hearing it was our anniversary, they even brought a pink rose out to my wife and also gave us a piece of cake.

Yelp
We went with their signature dish, and was also what the server suggested, the Chile en Nogada. We got both the cheese version and the ground beef version. WOW it they were amazing! I was sort of surprised my daughter liked the cheese version with the varied flavors, fruit, walnut, cheese, etc. but she really liked it. I've made this before and it is a giant pain in the a$$ to make! It is considered one of Mexico's national dishes from the Puebla region. The colors of the dish, green Chile, red pomegranate and white sauce further add to the national theme of the dish. As I understand the owners of this establishment are from the Puebla region and I am thrilled that they have gone to the effort to put this dish on the menu. As a whole their menu is amazing and not your typical Mexican restaurant menu. In comparison it is a much shorter menu but full of specialties like seafood Chile relleno, rib-eye crepe, crepas poblanas and mole poblano. The vibe too is different than most Mexican restaurants, much more upscale. Keep these differences in mind when you eat here, it is not going to be a mass of food covered in cheese with sides of rice and refried beans. I thought my portion perfect, it is a really rich dish and couldn't imagine eating more than what they served. I wish I had this restaurant back home, I would love to come back and enjoy these specialities. So why not 5 stars? I hate to say it but it was the service. Our server was efficient and all but had no warmth, smile or welcoming presence. She wasn't rude or anything but just not friendly at all. We were not there at a busy time so that wasn't the issue. Also, she gave us our menus and asked if we would like chips and salsa and we said sure! Unlike most Mexican restaurants they charge for chips and salsa. Now it was only $4 and was two types of salsa, chips and beans and they were amazing so I didn't mind paying or getting them but just kind of hate that kind of thing. Also, I don't think they were on the dinner menu but we did come right at the end of lunch and the beginning of dinner.

Yelp
In a city full of Tex Mex, it's nice to find more interesting plate selections. Started off with Mezcal, a beer and their chips and salsa. The corn chips come fresh with 3 specialty salsas. A bean and chorizo salsa is a comforting start to the hungry diner. Their house salsa is thin but packed with chiles and brightness from an oil and vinegar base. The star was the salsa the server described as spicy. Although, the spice is not an overpowering chile. It's crushed garlic and seasonings that remind me of Christmas morning with cinnamon and cocoa notes. Our entrees were chicken mole, chile verde, and chile en Nogada. All three were outstanding. The cocoa in the mole sauce ecstasy. The seeds and nuts add a delicious depth to the chile en Nogada. The chile verde is exactly what you want out of this dish. Succulent pork with a hot spice level above the other dishes. I have no idea why this place wasn't packed. The atmosphere is very modern. It reminds me of a downtown loft. Spacious, clean, decorated with a vibrant modern eye. The artwork is for sale and draws you into the spiraling dot art like a fractal landscape. The server and owner were very sweet. They were patient and interesting to talk with. Keep this place in business but save me a table!

Paola G.

Yelp
Best Mexican food in Denver! Shout out to the chef!! Must try the coconut margarita and the Crepas Poblanas! You have to try this place, it's beautifully decorated. Has great music vibes, not too loud so that you can speak but loud enough to get the Latin vibes flowing. Will keep coming back.

E E.

Yelp
I cannot say enough about our experience at Chili Verde! Having recently moved from Chicago to Denver, I have not been able to find true authentic Mexican. You can tell Chili Verde's recipes are passed down from generations (the owner is from Puebla). Truly cooks with amazing flavor. We had the mole verde, mole poblano, chili morita, calamari and chocolate cake. The service was incredible. A Michelin star experience without the 2 month wait. Would recommend 10/10!

Michael C.

Yelp
My wife, daughter, and I showed up at 430pm to enjoy an early dinner. The restaurant's door was locked but I could see a cook and another person walking around the dinning room. The person walking around struggled to open the door for us. Once they did, we asked if they were open. The guy was clueless and said let me go ask. They open at 4pm per the door signage. The place was empty no one knew what was going on. My family and I walked out and will not be back.

Will H.

Yelp
Chili Verde is an absolute gem. The ambiance is tremendous, the margs are delicious, but the food is the star. Starting with the Salsa Trio, they introduced me to a flavor I'd never had before and that I now crave - Salsa Macha. It's nutty, it's spicy, in the words of Guy Fieri - I'd eat that on a flip flop. Even my wife who doesn't like spice asks for another bowl. She had the Chile en Nogada once and may never order anything else again - a top dish in the city for her. I've bounced around the menu, but the best in my opinion is the Rib Eye Poblano. A transcendent dish that tastes more expensive than it is, a rare find these days. In all, the flavors are expertly balanced - you can just tell there's a level of care and passion put into each recipe. We were lucky enough to meet the owner Eder and hear his story, it only made us love this place more.
google avatar

Eugene H.

Yelp
Actively watching the server eat out of the chip bin while serving chips. Grabs basket with finger inside chip basket, snuffs nose with thumb, did not wash hands after. Sucked slat off fingers. Picture of my View of chip bin. Food is good. No physical menu available after I ask twice. Hygiene training needed.

Yelp
Updated for 2021 - have come here many times. This time the beet salad made my companion nauseous. I tasted it and there was something wrong. Foul. Rotten. The lettuce was icy and stale. We deduced the mango dressing was sour/old/fermented. The salad was covered with it. The salad was unable to be eaten. I have never seen someone reject a food item so instinctual with their face and body language. It almost caused vomiting. It is rare and unfortunate. I had the Chili Verde and it was a very small portion for the price. Not busy. Service was slow to refill water and chips. Sala portions were tiny bowls 1/4 full. This experience has me rethinking ever coming back. I cannot recommend it anymore.

Yelp
Cute place . Nice staff. Food is good. Great patio !!! Give it a try !! Date night spot too .

Yelp
The best part of chili verde is its within walking distance of our house! Their staff are soooo friendly and helpful. They're also super family friendly which makes this mom of 2 much more relaxed. Everything we've had here has been great. It's a great place to hit up before heading to a broncos game. You won't regret stopping by!

Yelp
First meal in Denver. The food was delicious. The restaurant was cute, clean, and the staff friendly. Just right after a day of traveling.

Agnes D.

Yelp
We walked in the door and we were immediately transported to Mexico! The ambiance, decorations, cleanliness, and greetings from the staff told us we were in for a wonderful feast! We enthusiastically ate the seafood stuffed poblano and Chili Verde which were spiced perfectly. Be sure to have the chips with beans and salsas. They were addictive! We look forward to our next meal and exploring the rest of the menu. Thank you!

Yelp
I've never given a restaurant a bad review, but I am upsettingly disappointed in this restaurant. 2 stars just for the ambience and nice staff. We went for cinco de Mayo. They had a limited menu, which was understandable. I got the signature margarita ($14) and my partner got the house ($8), they came from the same premade batch and tasted the exact same but mine had an orange on top. Very sad but okay. The chips and dips were meh. Again, okay. Then the food came. I got the crepe pablanas($17) and my partner got the mole pablano ($18). We got 8 bites each with the crepes being very average and the mole being the worst we ever had. Flavor is preference, I know, but the bill coming out to $70 and still leaving hungry is the worst restaurant experience ever. Save your money
google avatar

Laura Ellen R.

Yelp
I have been here a handful of times, every time is absolutely amazing. Never a disappointing meal, always excellent service and I love the atmosphere. Restaurant is clean, bright, colorful. And the food, out of this world! Definitely get the Chile en Nogada, just incredible.
google avatar

Peter S.

Yelp
First of all, the food is awesome. It's unique to the Mexican state of Pueblo. Their mole sauce is the best I've tasted. Having studied Mexican cooking a bit, I know how many steps there are in making mole sauce and other salsas, dishes, etc. served at Chile Verde. These people don't cut corners. It's also a more elegant place than many Mexican restaurants in Denver. This makes it a great place to celebrate special occasions like birthdays, anniversaries, etc. However, their prices are still reasonable. We were there on a slow Tuesday night during Christmas week so the owner came over and attended to us personally. His friendliness and personal attention really made us feel liked valued guests. I've eaten here several times in the past but will definitely visit more often in the future. It's the best Mexican restaurant I've found during the decade I've lived in Denver. P. S.: They also have a great bar, with a terrific margarita menu. There's also wide selection of tequilas, beers and other spirits. Their wine list is solid as well.
google avatar

Felicia M.

Yelp
I ordered a taco salad for dinner to go, and got home to find the chicken still raw and very undercooked. Called to reorder but the manager just offered to void my ticket. Very unfortunate/disappointing.
google avatar

Brieanna C.

Yelp
The food here is delicious! So creative and tasty. A great sport for kids too (my 8 year old loves the floutas). The CHILE EN NOGADA is amazing. Service is quick and kind.
google avatar

Yelp
Food is amazing. The Steak Fajitas or Chili Rellenos are amazing!:) Unique taste and absolutely delicious. Ambiance is vibey and chill.

Jeanne H.

Yelp
Simply the BEST. The food is beyond amazing--with many of the owner's mother's recipies included. Try the Mole--it is unique and fabulous. The owner, staff, cooks, everyone is there to do whatever they can to make sure you have a relaxing and enjoyable meal--I cannot say enough good things!
google avatar

Yelp
We were looking for a tasty place to meet friends and have a late lunch/HH and were delighted with this restaurant. I had the stewed crab tostadas and a bottomless Arnold Palmer and was very happy.

Zach L.

Yelp
First time coming here. Ordered a marg at the bar and ordered the food to go since it was almost empty and I figured they would shut down early. Interior was nice. Flavor was maybe 4/5 but the entree- portion size was clearly for a 4 year old. Please raise your prices or tell me if your going to give me a kids meal before I drive home. With a marg and tip, this came out ~$40.

Greg Z.

Yelp
Been here several times. Food is excellent and they offer several traditional dishes from Mexico not usually available in most Mexican restaurants.
google avatar

Dave B.

Yelp
COVID-19 delivery order. Easy to order online. Order was correct. Food was the same as always: delicious. we have been enjoying Chili Verde's food for 11 years. Metal containers make for easy reheating.
google avatar

AJ M.

Yelp
Delicious and authentic! I would hands down recommend this place to anyone that is looking for delicious Mexican food. The atmosphere of the restaurant is great and more modern, they also have a very cool outdoor area. The owners are also very friendly! This should definitely be on your list of places to try and then make your frequent rotation.
google avatar

Kylie B.

Yelp
This is the best, most authentic Mexican I've had in Denver so far. I had family in town this past weekend and my dad recommended we check it out. The service was incredible, as was the food & margaritas. All 7 of us enjoyed our meals. I ordered the Chili Verde and it was absolutely delicious!
google avatar

Yoesmi G.

Yelp
This is my favorite Authentic Mexican food restaurant in Denver!!! Order their chicken taco salad or their Chile verde meal or their Suiza enchiladas you cannot go wrong! The plantains for dessert are also a must. The owners are so friendly and staff is attentive!
