The 9 Best Chinese Restaurants In Washington DC's Chinatown

"China Boy is a cash-only takeout restaurant that serves the kind of food you skip home to eat. Walk up to the cloistered storefront and you’ll find a window decorated in twinkling lights and a cartoonized version of the menu drawn in bright pastel colors. You’ll be tempted to order everything on site, but start with the garlic spicy wings, which pack a punch. They’re savory and fiery, the skin is crispy, and the meat is tender. And for those of you that don’t carry cash, you can make a pick-up order online where you can pay by card." - omnia saed

Google
This is definitely a hole in the wall restaurant but it is nicely decorated. The ladies who worked there are very friendly and efficient. There are definitely a constant line of customers. We will definitely dine here again the next time we visit DC. Beware that they charge extra for credit payment but there is a clear sign at the cashier. The food was very good. Their beef chow fun was the best with the right flavor. It was quite oily however. The beef stew fun soup was okayed. I would definitely try other steamed rolls dishes next time.

Google
Tiny eatery on the edge of Chinatown DC. Prefer cash, but they do take cards. The place specializes in house made rice noodles. The noodles are chewy and delicious. There are only 5 tables inside. You’ll see a lot of to-go and pick up orders. The chili sauce is so good. All the food is served in plastic to-go containers regardless if you eat in or not. Portion sizes are big and affordable.

Google
6/10. Pretty decent Chinese takeout at a very affordable price in DC, well within walking distance to museums and monuments. The dimsum looked amazing! Unfortunately, I did not have that, instead the beef curry I had was more watery than expected but had surprisingly rich notes - though one more piece of beef would have been the perfect portion size. The other fired foods are unimaginatively typical, so get something different. Small place, so get there at an early/late time or order in advance. They add an extra charge for card purchases, so cash is handy. A group of 2 would be comfy. Well priced and fast service though! Very kind cashier lady.

Google
China Boy DC is a hidden gem for authentic Cantonese comfort food. The shrimp rice noodle crepes are silky and fresh, the pork belly buns are rich and flavorful, and the fried rice is perfectly seasoned. Don’t miss the pork dumplings...juicy and packed with flavor. A must-visit for casual, delicious eats in Chinatown.

Google
The best Chinese food I've ever had. I had the combination lo mein and it had char siu pork, chicken, beef, and shrimp in it...lots of meat. Definitely worth the visit! It's recommended that you bring cash to pay for your meal here (although the venue can accept credit cards by you scanning a QR code to order).

Google
In town for conference and this place was on my list of recommended places to try from friend. Placed order online to pickup. Ordered the beef chow foon with vegetables and option for spicy. Order was ready when I arrived. Very small interior with only a few tables to dine. Took food back to room, which was a short walk. Food was hot, temperature wise, but there was no spiciness at all to the dish. It also lacked seasoning in general. Beef and vegetables were cooked well, just disappointed in seasoning of dish. If I were to try again, I would dine in.

Google
So proud that this place made it through Covid, and has now extended a portion of the restaurant for adequate seating. There was only one large table and a small side table which patrons had to share before, but now they have upgraded. The food is still just like I remember, fresh, tasty and done right. The only change was I didn't get any fried Basil with my popcorn chicken 😋 but still it was delicious. Congratulations China Boy for coming back!!

Google
If you want freshly made authentic Chinese fast food stuff. This is the place. In the photos are the beef, shrimp and roasted pork crepe. The leafy thing is the sticky rice chicken.

Yelp
Since my last visit, they've opened up their dining area, it's a very small dining space. They also say that you get a better price for paying cash. Ordered online, but you have to make an account and pay with a card. It was convenient and set a pick up time as my "note". We ordered take out and it was ready by the time I had requested. The food was good. We got the beef brisket noodles again. And an order of the pork crepe noodles, a bbq pork bao and the big chicken bao. It all tasted good but I was a little surprised that the order for the bbq pork bao was $6 for ONE bao.
google avatar

Bea P.

Yelp
This place is located in Chinatown. I came to try the dim sum but unfortunately they only accept cash so if you want to pay by card, you'll have to place an online order which lists the same items at higher prices. While I was at the location, I placed an online order to pay by card in order to dine in. I ordered the shrimp rice rolls which were very good. The shrimp was a decent size and the rice rolls were soft. A few customers came in afterwards and weren't too happy after they verbally gave their order only to find out that the establishment only accepts cash. The interior was simple and small. The woman who took my order was nice.

Yelp
One of the best Roast Pork Noodle Soup I've had in DC and DMV. This is a real hole-in-the-wall kinda space, cozy and nice. They prefer Cash, so please do carry if you are visiting.
google avatar

Song Y.

Yelp
Wonton noodle soup is super hot and has 6 wontons and some veggies to make it a nice lunch. Add some chili oil for a little spice.
google avatar

Yelp
Very clean inside!! The girl at the front desk was so nice and juggling so much. She took our order, wiped down tables, took the phone orders and brought out the food. The food was also so good!! We sat inside and ate our lunch on a hot humid day here in DC. So good!!! Check them out
google avatar

Yelp
I was super excited to try China Boy! You're lucky to get seating but if you can that's makes the experience more enjoyable! The restaurant is very small yet clean and welcoming! Customer service is great! As a true Asian food lover, I wanted to introduce my niece and nephew to the culture! I got an assortment of things and they totally enjoyed everything. We got the chicken and sticky rice, pork buns, rice noodles with shrimp and pork bao buns! Everything was delicious and tasted freshly made the next time I come to DC I will definitely be back to try more items on the menu
google avatar

Yelp
Exactly what I want out of my casual Asian dining. Small place, unassuming, and old looking menu often mean the food is about to be great. We got the pork dumplings and pork buns. Both were packed with flavor. The chili sauce on the table was spicy enough to bring one single tear to my eye, perfect. Wish it wasn't cash only and that they had some music playing so it wasn't so quiet, but overall great experience and would recommend.

Amir O.

Yelp
Food was excellent and came out so quickly. We had the Chow Foon and the Soup dishes as well as spring rolls for an appetizer Bravo!
google avatar

Kenneth K.

Yelp
China boy is a good restaurant because meals are good but the space is not as big as a regular restaurant. I recommend it .
google avatar

Sydney G.

Yelp
Cash only, unless you order on your phone with the app. Definitely more of a takeout spot, as they only have seating for about 8 people inside. We ordered a few things - beef lo mein, crystal shrimp dumpling , wonton soup, and chicken chow foon. Everything was really tasty and the people working there were friendly.
google avatar

Erika S.

Yelp
Came here to meet a friend since she heard that the food was good. It's a cash only spot but you can order by scanning a code and paying that way. Small restaurant definitely more of a take out spot. Luckily when we came there was only 1 other table with 2 people. The food was good. Especially the dumplings ! I could go back again and again just for those. Yum! I was not a fan of the soup. But the noodle dishes were also good.

Derek W.

Yelp
it was really feally really good! I liked the food. everything tasty. come again I would for sure haha
google avatar

Hannah T.

Yelp
For some reason crystal dumplings are hard to find in DC, but thankfully China Boy came to my rescue! This cash only, take out only spot closes pretty early during the week so my roommate and I treated ourselves to lunch delivery via DoorDash. We eagerly placed our order Sunday night after they had closed and the order was processed right when they open, coming exactly at our scheduled time with everything warm and fresh. I'm sure everything on their menu is delicious so the only must is to make sure to get their chili oil. It is flavorful and got a delicious kick unlike any jarred one I've tried. So glad to have a go to spot for crystal dumplings. Will be ordering again!
google avatar

Sophia H.

Yelp
Solid Chinese food. My partner and I split the following dishes: - Shrimp rice noodle crepe - good, and the sauce (labeled "dumpling") on the table is great with the noodle crepe. - Beef brisket chow foon - okay, somewhat greasy. It doesn't have a lot of brisket meat (mostly tendon), which was a bit disappointing. - Sticky rice chicken - great flavors and very filling
google avatar

Tammy C.

Yelp
This is the spot for on the go chinese appetizers and Chinese staples. You can get a variety of dim sum and a variety of noodle dishes here. I got the pork belly bao bun which was insanely good. The sauce is EVERYTHING. I wish it was stuffed with more meat but I would get it again. Price was decent! An order of the bao buns comes with 2 for 6.95. Everything is just around $10 or less. Service is fast and i have no complaints about that. This is not a sit down place. You go in and place your order at the door. Don't feel discouraged ordering since the order window is right at the entryway. Order and you won't regret it. ** CASH ONLY HERE ** ** CLOSED ON TUESDAYS **
google avatar

Peggy L.

Yelp
Excellent lunch spot for cheap. I'd order beef brisket chow fun, shrimp/pork shumai, or shrimp rice crepe from there and feel satisfied. Service is quick and efficient as they're only taking cash if you're ordering in person. Ambiance is small but nice.
google avatar

Shaquille J.

Yelp
I really like the pork belly bao's from this place. I'm from the NY area and I never come across a place who's Chinese food comes close to Chinatown in NY. The pork belly bao's is very good. The bread is so soft and scrumptious! Lol I could go on and on. The service is pretty quick. We ordered to go and got our food within about 10 mins. The lady was pretty nice. Make sure you bring cash though because they are cash only. Also they are currently takeout only! Give it a try!
google avatar

Jay K.

Yelp
I dined in. I asked for a Shrimp Chow Foon, very little oil, and sauce. I like my Chow Foon noodles light and airy and bouncy. It was made perfect, bouncy noods, plump shrimp. Will be back.
google avatar

Mel S.

Yelp
Not many places serve fresh rice noodle, so i was very excited to dine this home in the wall. This place had a good number of items on the menu to choose from and after ordering the food was ready within 15 minutes. You'll need to find a place to eat since this is a take out only establishment. You walk in and place your order and wait outside for it to be ready. It was a 5 minute walk from the hotel we were staying in so we got lunch items one day and breakfast items another day. Definitely look forward to visiting again and trying something different.

Emily B.

Yelp
great hearty food and amazing service. space is not very big but there's enough for multiple guests to sit and enjoy the food. good food

Kyle Z.

Yelp
Great food and super nice people! Got the beef noodle and was delicious, would definitely come again

Noam E.

Yelp
i have ordered from here numerous times and highly recommend! the food here is great and tastes pretty authentic which is very hard to find in DC... originally from the Seattle area that has great Chinese food which I have not been able to find in DC until i came across China Boy. They are cash only and take out only, however i have ordered on grubhub/uber eats numerous times and the food still tastes grreat. great prices too
google avatar

Ben L.

Yelp
Highly recommend this little hole in the wall Chinese restaurant that is cash only and takeout only. We found this while traveling through the area and looking for a dim sum place a lot of folks recommended it, and I highly recommend it too. The steamed pork buns were really good and were my favorite out of the three different dim sums that we got. Just a reminder it's takeout only so order at the counter and wait about 10 minutes for your food. This place is super good - highly recommend!

Samuel S.

Yelp
Good & authentic-tasting food in the heart of Chinatown. Prices are better than neighbors.
google avatar

Vincent M.

Yelp
I've heard good things about China Boy and happened to be in the area. I know their rice rolls are supposed to be well known, so I had fried pork dumplings, shrimp rice rolls, beef chow foon, and then threw in an order of shrimp dumplings. Pork dumplings, shrimp rice rolls, and chow fun were great. The pork dumplings were actually deep fried, but a good mix of chewy and crispy. The shrimp rice rolls were really tender and the flavor alone was good, but with the sauce it was perfect. The chow foon had a really nice wok hei to it, super smoky. The shrimp dumplings were the only letdown. They seemed to be like some inexpensive, frozen "shrimp" dumplings from the store. Overall I'd go back, but skip the shrimp dumplings.
google avatar

David H.

Yelp
been a while since the last review - quick update to say China boy is as good as ever. still cash only, call in your order (or pay more on the delivery apps - prices are marked up). My favorite items on the menu are the chow foon, rice noodle crepes, crystal shrimp dumplings, yu choy in garlic sauce. Pan fried dumplings are ok but can be over fried, lo mein is average, bao, steamed buns, wings and spring rolls are ok. They open early so this is my go to if I feel like noodles for breakfast
google avatar

Isaac H.

Yelp
I was walking around Chinatown trying to find food, randomly picked this spot and super happy I did! PSA - it is cash-only so be prepared. If you don't have cash, they have a list of nearby ATMs. Also, it is take-out only. Food quality is really good and they prepared my order fairly quickly! Took about 8-10 minutes for the three dishes I ordered. It's only one person manning the counter and then running back into the kitchen to oversee the food preparation, so be patient!
google avatar

Bilisan T.

Yelp
Loved this, the order came so fast and food smells great. They had extra utensils, always a plus. Let's dig in !
google avatar

Lila G.

Yelp
I checked out this place on yelp and saw a lot of people love this little Chinatown Gem and decided to order through UberEats. I always wanted to try handmade noodles. I got the pork rice noodle crepe. It's so tasty and soft. Also I wasn't expecting the delivery containers to be so cute too! I would say though they did give me an overwhelming big tub of rice. So good and not overly priced.
google avatar

Erika P.

Yelp
THE BEST DIMSUM IN NOVA. Literally hole-in-a-wall place, only takeout, no dining. Prices are very cheap and reasonable but the food is amazing! I am addicted to their Shrimp Rice Noodle Roll and their Bok Choy. A must try if you're visiting in DC or if you live in the DC area. Disclaimer: Cash only if you're going to order on the spot, but you can also use the online ordering app they prefer if you want to pay with card!
google avatar

Cindy C.

Yelp
Nice place for a quick breakfast. They open early so you can get congee, rice rolls and bao freshly made to order. Note: this restaurant is takeout only but you can call in or order online in advance for quick and easy pickup. Two orders of rice rolls (shrimp, fried dough) was approximately $11 including tax.
google avatar

Bob B.

Yelp
I found this location by fellow yelpers. Things to be aware: There are no seating, everything is to-go. They only accept cash. They have a limited dim sum menu. I recommend trying this place if you are DC for the experience, but I think there are better dim sum options around town.
google avatar

Roger L.

Yelp
The food here is 10/10! I honestly don't know what all we ordered from the dim sum menus but it was all amazing. The service was fast and friendly. The only reason for 4 stars is the restaurant is very small with limited seating. It's a great lunch or dinner choice but have a back up plan.
google avatar

Lenne H.

Yelp
Incredible food!!! Don't miss out on a life changing experience! You won't regret it!
google avatar

Steve H.

Yelp
Best noodles I've been able to find in the city. This place is small with a limited menu. It's not for everybody, but the food is absolutely delicious. I's cash only but that's not a problem when we're talking about food this good! The dumplings and the pork chowfoon are my favorite. But everything I've had is really good
google avatar

Caitlin N.

Yelp
Love love love China Boy! I found China Boy weeks ago when looking for a quick bite to eat in DC and stumbled upon their dim sum menu. The prices and the delicious options were right up our alley, so we made a point to stop by on our day trip. We ordered waayyyy too much but it was so good that we weren't upset about it one bit. We ordered: - 2 orders of pork steamed buns (thought it only came with one per order--we were wrong) - 2 orders of pork belly buns (thought it only came with one per order--we were wrong) - 1 order of shrimp shu mai - 1 order of pork dumplings - 1 order of crystal shrimp dumplings We loved everything we ordered and would order more if our stomachs could manage. I look forward to the day I return for dim sum at China Boy!
google avatar

Jake R.

Yelp
Simple, thoughtful Chinese food I ordered the Chrystal shrimp crepe and roasted pork chow foon. Yelp recommended the Chile oil with the crepe, and it's a great addition. The crepe was chewy, gelatinous, and clean tasting, and provided a nice contrast with the pleasant steamed shrimp and spicy oil. The roasted pork chow foon was amazing, I'd say it's enough food for two people, but if you're starving, it's totally worth pigging out on, pun intended. Online it said there was no seating, but they have 3 small tables for seating; but the food is all carry out, so there's no waiter service, but there are drinks you can buy, which is fine. I'm excited to visit again and try some other items on the menu!
google avatar

Singi D.

Yelp
Carry out window, no seating, food was good. Cash only. Didn't really live up to the hype. Closes at 5, so this is the first time I've been able to get there. The pork steamed buns were good, I liked the pork shumai. The chili sauce was very spicy but so good. Chicken popcorn was not bad. Shrimp chow foon was really good. Beef brisket noodles soup was tasty. I'd try other dishes next time.
google avatar

Connie L.

Yelp
Stopped by on a weekday afternoon and had an okay experience. I wanted to love China Boy more but the two dishes I ordered fell short of my expectations. Service was friendly although a bit slow. I ordered the Pork Belly Buns (3/5) and Roasted Pork Chow Foon (2/5). The buns were fresh and soft and came with a sweet and spicy mayo sauce with a single slice of cucumber and pork. The single pork belly piece was thin and mostly pork fat. The roasted pork in the chow foon was too salty, almost inedible, even when paired with the noodles. The rice noodles themselves came out piping hot and were quite good although very greasy. Overall, I appreciate how authentic and affordable it is (considering price and portion sizes!) but the two dishes I ordered did not do it for me.
google avatar

Skylar D.

Yelp
Decided to give this place a try because it was so close to the hotel. When I say service was fast, I mean fast. I think my food was ready within 7 minutes. The beef rice noodle crepe was pretty good. Better with the sauce they give. The pork belly buns were so flavorful. Highly recommend getting an order of those. Lastly, I got the Beef Chow Foon and added vegetables. So good with the spice oil. Fresh and hot. A great spot for quick take out.
google avatar

AJ C.

Yelp
China Boy is the place to go when you're here!! Skip the long lines and wait at other good sit-down places around here. This place is CASH only, TAKEOUT only, and there's very little space to wait. The good news is that the food comes out really quick!! All the dim sum options here are good choices - you know it's good good when the food is too oily and greasy! Come support your local Chi-town business that runs the block!

Thomas K.

Yelp
Great service, Authentic Chinese, quaint and small eating area, food was AMAZING. My office is in China town so I will be back ABSOLUTELY! 謝謝!
google avatar

Brittani U.

Yelp
Great lomien and the combo fried rice is out of this world. Ordered takeout and the food came super hot. It was fresh and could easily feed two.
google avatar

T T.

Yelp
No frills, authentic, delicious, great for dine in, take out, or delivery. What else do you need?!
google avatar

Chris Q.

Yelp
Love the food. Been going for years. Remodel looks great. But when you walk in and order take out and get home and an item is missing is disappointing.

Sofia R.

Yelp
Amazing little spot right around the corner from the metro. We got the popcorn chicken and the roast pork rice noodle crepes, both phenomenal! They have sauces on each table to add on some flavor and spice
google avatar

Michael L.

Yelp
Very popular, yet I have never had a long wait. Easy to pass right on by and literally nowhere to sit. Open 930-5pm and closed Tuesdays. Perfect for early lunch. My type of place for sticky rice in lotus leaf, yu choy with garlic sauce, popcorn chicken and steamed rice rolls. The food and value are so good but literally "a hole in the wall'. Absolutely delicious. Almost sinful. Even the homeless men down the street were decent.

Alain Z.

Yelp
Excellent authentic cuisine. We ordered wonton noodle soup, rice crepes with shrimp, and shumai, all very good. The flavor was subtle, good texture, and appropriate sauce for the rice crepes. Will be back.
google avatar

Erica W.

Yelp
has a wide variety of foods to order and has a bit of seating inside. my friend and i used cash btw. we ordered lo mein noodles, shrimp rice rolls, and fried dumplings which were good but not as amazing as i had expected (coming from a chinese native). the staff are nice and bring the food out to you. it is very quiet in there and i would consider going again since there aren't a lot of "good" asian eats in the dc area that are affordable as well!
google avatar

Michael C.

Yelp
Do yourself a favor and order the beef brisket chow fun (牛腩炒河粉). Wok hei you can taste with delicious, slightly chewy and perfectly cooked noodles. This place is OG and has survived gentrification in Chinatown DC and is basically the only restaurant I go to there. No dine in at least for now and cash only but it is amazing.
