If you have Euros to burn, this is the place to do it. La Manufacture had been open just one month when we journeyed to the up and coming Bastille neighborhood to find this opulent den of chocolate.
The minute I opened the doors to the shop, I was flooded with the essence of chocolate. I didn't want to leave. Ever. I just wanted to keep circling the small, austere shop, sampling the generous tastes among the bags, bars and boxes of chocolate. Dark chocolate covered citron, pistachio praline, almond dragee, I tried them all. I tried to school my face into a poker face but my moans ecstasy betrayed me.
The shopkeeper was very friendly and seemed extremely proud to show the wares and give us more tastes from the glass case. Never been a fan of "fruity" chocolate anything but the shopkeeper insisted that I try the raspberry infused chocolate. I'm a convert.
Through the windows of the shop, you can peer into the actual factory. When I was there, nothing seemed to be happening. Alas, no tours due to contamination concerns (remember that scene from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory where Augustus Gloop falls into the chocolate river after gulping fistfuls of the stuff?) Yeah, that would totally happen here.
Sheer gluttony and the want of more! more! more! chocolate is tempered by cost. I believe there's a credit card slogan that asks, "what's in your wallet?"
The smallest "discovery" box is 25 Euros. A chocolate bar is 7 Euros. Think about the gifts for mom and dad, aunt, your office, your bff, uh, you and ....it's an eye-popping fortune.
Definitely keep this trip to yourself or there will be hell to pay if you come home empty handed.
