Best Restaurants in Concord and Pleasant Hill | Eater SF

"Chopan Kabob has locations in Concord and San Ramon, and serves traditional Afghan/halal dishes. The beef chaplee kabob—a large ground beef patty flecked with cracked coriander, garlic, and red pepper flakes—is smashed extra flat on the griddle for maximum browning, craggy edges, and flavor. Entrees are served with rice, side green salad, a huge half moon of Afghan flatbread, and the spicy cilantro-based, vinegary hot sauce that you will want to drizzle over everything. Vegetarian-friendly dishes include daal, aushak (steamed, leek-filled dumplings), or sabzi chalow (spinach cooked in a housemade masala sauce). Appetizers include bolani, the baby blanket-sized fried flatbread filled with a choice of leek/herbs, potato, or pumpkin. For its takeout journey, bolani comes in a pizza box for easy access snacking on the car ride home. Or have a seat at Chopan Kabob’s small outdoor dining area and enjoy it there." - Rebecca Shea

I just had my first visit to this amazing place, and I can't rate it highly enough—definitely a 10 out of 10! The food here is absolutely delicious, and the service is top-notch. Ms. Farzana and Mr. Jawid were so friendly and made our experience even better. I can't wait to tell my family and friends about it and visit again soon :)

Google
It's a authentic local cozy Afghan restaurant. Indoor and outdoor seating. Kids friendly in the outside seating. Good for groups and meetup. It's located in a plaza with lots of free parking. We had kitchen and beef kabobs with cumin rice, really tenderly delicious. Dal soup was a bit spicy to me but still refreshing. Will come back for casual eat in or takeout.

This gem of a place serves up fantastic grilled meat dishes, soups, stews, dumplings, breads, and more. The grilled beef items have never failed to satisfy the palate, and the soup seems to be quite a popular choice as well. The rice served here is really flavorful and incredibly delicious. The ever so kind staff make the experience here so easy and enjoyable. I'll definitely come back for dinner here!

I had a wonderful experience at this restaurant! The service was outstanding, quick, attentive, and very professional. What really made the visit special was the owner, who was extremely friendly and generous. You can truly feel the hospitality and care in everything they do. Highly recommended for anyone looking for not just great food, but also a welcoming atmosphere!

Great little spot! Ate on the back patio. Very friendly service, delicious food! Tender and flavorful kabobs. Even the rice was tasty. Got the eggplant appetizer and then the combo plate with chicken and the spiced meat. We will be adding this place to our regular rotation.

A Delightful Afghan Experience at Chopan Kabab Recently, I had the pleasure of dining at Chopan Kabab, a restaurant specializing in Afghan cuisine. The restaurant offers a unique and flavorful dining experience that I highly recommend. Although the menu is full of flavorful dishes, my main course was the tandori fish, which was cooked to perfection. The flavors were spot-on, with a balanced blend of spices that tantalized the taste buds. The portion size was generous, and the presentation was visually appealing. The tandori fish was accompanied by a refreshing side salad and warm, soft bread. This combination provided a well-rounded and satisfying meal. The service at Chopan Kabab was excellent. The staff was friendly, attentive, and knowledgeable about the menu. The restaurant itself boasted a clean and inviting atmosphere with a cool ambiance. While there was some background noise, it wasn't disruptive to conversation. A big plus for Chopan Kabab is their focus on authentic Afghan food. If you're looking to explore new flavors and culinary traditions, this restaurant is a great choice. Overall, my experience at Chopan Kabab was delightful. The delicious food, excellent service, and cool ambiance make it a restaurant worth visiting. I highly recommend it, especially for those seeking authentic Afghan cuisine.

Yelp
Small, homey place with ~6-7 tables inside and additional seating outside. Greeted and seated as soon as we walked in on a Friday evening. A lot of parking tho the parking lot can be a little tight. Bolani was good, flavorful and peppery with a nice crispy outside. Yogurt it came with was refreshing. 10/10 Chaplee wasn't too spicy, flavorful and had a unique crisp to it 10/10 Beef/chicken kabobs were reeeeally flavorful, not spicy, not dry. Points that our 6 month old was able to eat this with us 10/10 Lamb was lacking which is a bummer because i love lamb. Tho it had good flavor and aroma, it was dry 6/10 Mantu were fresh, good amount of filling 10/10 Overall, prices were reasonable, portions were good size and the service was friendly/quick. Would come back.

Yelp
The menu is what you would expect for an afghan kabob shop. Bolani (potato) and eggplant with the chicken kabob was the choice. With a green tea to wash it down. The meal was well prepared and the bolani was nice and crisp with minimal oil. Lots of yogurt dip served with it. The eggplant is served with pita like bread and is enough to share. The kabob plate comes with rice and a green salad. I'm not sure Italian dressing is what you would get in Kabul. But this is Concord CA and so it was. The price is fair. 40 bucks for it all. My wife got a Diet Coke The mural is amazing btw

Yelp
I moved away during the pandemic and had to come back to the bay for an appointment today. There's no good Afghan food within 75 miles of where I currently live (greater-Sac). Found myself craving this spot and was so happy I decided to stop here. The service is friendly and the dining room is clean and cozy. The food tasted better than I remember. The beef chaplee and lamb seekh kabab were seasoned and cooked to perfection. The chutneys were a delicious compliment. Can't wait to go back!

Yelp
My wife and I stopped by Chopan Kabob for lunch on a Saturday around noon and the restaurant was pretty empty. Between the two of us, we shared the bolani kachaloo -- flat-bread stuffed with mashed potato, green onion and herbs, and a combo platter -- opting for the beef shami and the lamb kabob, since the chicken shami was not available at the time. Considering that we were likely the first party to dine in that day and that the kitchen is a pretty small operation, the food took around 25 minutes to prepare. We didn't mind waiting, but if you're in a large group or are in a hurry, you should definitely keep this in mind and plan accordingly. The bolani is fried really well. It's not the crispiest I've ever had, but I attribute that to the steaming potato filling inside. I'm sure air-frying the leftovers will be incredible. The yogurt sauce is such a refreshing contrast to the fried bolani. The proteins from our combo platter were both very juicy. I loved the rich combination of spices used in the meats. We wish we had a chance to try the chicken shami, but otherwise between the lamb kebab and the beef shami, the beef was our preferred of the two. If you ordered the bolani like we did, the proteins both go really well with the yogurt sauce as well. If I'm ever in the area, I'm definitely stopping by Chopan Kebob again for a meal.

Yelp
This is a small but deceivingly spacious Afghani restaurant tucked into a Latin strip mall in Concord. We enjoyed a nice halal dinner here of bhulani, lamb chops, chicken kababs, and rice. They weren't a lot of customers inside, but nonstop online orders, which is always a good sign. The kitchen is small but mighty and will definitely return. Hot, fresh, and authentic. Alhamdulillah!

Yelp
Great cute little restaurant perfect to grab lunch or seat there to enjoy your meal in a quite place (no music playing). The food was delicious I got the lamb Chopan and it was tender and juicy, the water was nice and cold very refreshing. The waiter was nice, the restaurant was clean and there's parking right outside.

Yelp
This is a cute little restaurant that you can get some fresh food. I've had some Afghan food before and wanted to find some place closer to home. Decided to try Chopan as an option. We got there, and it took about 20 mins to make our order. The chicken tikka masala was okay. I'd probably try another place for that. The potato bolani was good, and the choplee and chicken combo was a little less than expected. I thought it would be a little more for the price, but it tasted good. I think I'll come back and try some other things.

Yelp
Chopan Kanob is my new go to place when looking for Afghan food in the area! Everything here is a delicious! Located inside a plaza on Monument, the area is busy but there is usually parking. The employees are very friendly and attentive. Some of the sweetest people I've met! The restaurant has a few tables to dine in and when I came during lunch time, they were busy but I there was space to sit. Now the food is delicious! I came with my coworkers during lunch and we tried a few dishes. Everything was delicious. I had a combo plate that came with the Chaplee Beef Kabob (beef patty) and the Chicken Kabob. The plate came with rice, salad and bread. The meat was very flavorful and absolutely delicious! It's definitely one of the best ones I've tried. I also ordered a side of yogurt to eat with the dish. It complemented the dish very well so that's a must have for me. My friend tried the Mantu, steamed dumpling, with sauce and garlic yogurt and the flavor was extraordinary! The ingredients are good quality, everything tastes freshly made and their flavors are delicious. If you are in the mood for Afghan food, give this place a try!

Yelp
Really love this place. We have eaten here twice and both times the quality of food has been amazing. We will definitely be back and it has become something that we crave!

Yelp
Been coming here for years! Staff are lovely, the interior and patio are pleasant to sit in, and the food is always amazing. The meats are delicious and juicy, and the bolani are so flavorful. Everything was a hit, including with my toddler. Our favorite Afghan spot for sure

Yelp
I've heard about this for years and finally had the opportunity to check it out. Sad to say but there wasn't anything to run home about. Decent experience. Good service and food was cooked to ordered. Lots of variety to pick from. Went for lunch and there was one other person there and maybe 1-2 door dash pick ups. Probably wouldn't come back.

Yelp
Tandoori chicken meal was delicious. Food took a while, and my car was getting new tires while I was eating. There was only 1 other person eating and it took about 20 minutes for the food. It did taste really good though, so I assume it was not pre prepared, hence the longer wait. HOWEVER, what bugged me was I selected this place because there was a Yelp coupon for a free soup with your meal. I enabled the coupon, sat down, ordered and also showed the coupon for the soup and was told they didn't do the free soup coupon anymore. What? Then you folks need to have it removed from your Yelp listing... felt like I got lured in with a false promise.

Yelp
I was on my way to another afghan restaurant until I found out they closed early for the day so I opted for this place and I'm so grateful I stumbled upon this restaurant. I've had authentic Afghan food before but this has got to be the best tasting so far. They were busy being that it was Father's Day so that's my fault but so so DELICIOUS and the service was great and helpful.

Yelp
I loveee chopan kabob. My favorite afghan place to eat. The shami kabob plate and the half half bolani plate is my favorite. In the heart of concord monument. Indoor and outdoor seating.

Yelp
Great fresh fare at very reasonable prices. Don't let the exterior give you the wrong impression - this is fine food,

Yelp
Hands down their Kababs were amazing! We ordered their chicken tandoori Kabab and chicken shami Kabab plates and really enjoyed the food. Kinda liked Chicken tandoori a tad more than the other one. We ordered the food on phone to go and food was ready for pick up in around 30 mins. Overall great experience and quick service. They also have decent sitting area for dining in. Will be back to try more of their menu!

Yelp
Just recently had lunch at Chopan Kabob with my buddy here at Chopan Kabob. He has nothing but good praises for this restaurant and to that end, he is mostly right. We came in just under the busy lunch hour and promptly got our orders in. I had the Two Meat Combo with beef shami and chicken kabob. I also got their Personal Bolani as an appetizer. The bolani was very good. It's stated as personal but this can very well be shared by two. The flatbread was crisped to perfection. The chutney, potatoes, and herbs were harmoniously delicious. I also appreciated that this bolani has a little kick (spice) to it. The meat combo meal was stout as well. The chicken was wonderfully marinated and not dry. The shami beef has all the right aromas. Drizzle the whole plate with generous chutney, and the whole dish is delish.

Khushal A.

Yelp
The place nice and tidy and the lamb karahi is delicious and it comes with side of white rice and some bread. The young man in the front was very courteous and it's my next time after couple of years and I would highly recommend to family and friends

Yelp
Chopan Kabob For lunch today, I was convinced by my family member to have the Kabob. We usually look at the Yelp but only look at the one with the most views. We been to this one before, pretty good experience and the only think is that the meat usually is a little bit dry in my opinion (if I want to be picky) but still good. We order the beef Shami kabob and Lamb Karahi (first time trying and order spicy). This is a small locally own restaurant and you can smell the wonderful meat being grilled while waiting. Sitting area might not be fancy but you won't come here if you are looking for something fancy or romantic any way. Shami seems to be a little dry and the lamb in the Karahi seems a little bit chewy. However, I think that just typical when you pick the meat that's lean w less fat (which is what they are doing). I just like something w little fat. Other than that everything is great. We need to encourage small business and give them five starts. Just the food might be 4.5. The staff members are professional, nice, and did stop by and ask how's everything. Will come back~

Yelp
I eat at this restaurant on a regular basis, it is easily one of my favorite restaurants in the Concord area. My friend and I sat outside yesterday since it was a nice day. It's a small restaurant with maybe 20 seats inside and 20 seats outside. I always over-order when I go to my favorite restaurants, so I can have a few meals even after I leave. My order was as follows: Mango yogurt drink - 16oz, a little too sweet, but not bad for a pre-made bottled drink Dall - maybe I misunderstood what I read but I thought this was a dip that came out with naan. What came out was more like a soup. Great savory flavor and wonderful with the naan dipped into it. Naan - is thicker and heartier than Indian naan. Good earthy flavor but I would recommend getting a soup to pair it with as this style of bread can be a bit dry. I also recommend eating all of it with your meal as it doesn't travel well, unless you have soup to eat at home. Bolani Kachaloo - this is easily my favorite item on their menu. I always order the full size as it gives me an appetizer at the restaurant plus another 1-2 full meals when I get home. It's cooked to a golden brown on either side and the potato filling has a nice flavor to it, spiced but not spicy. It comes with their onion, cucumber yogurt sauce and I also love the green cilantro chutney. Incidentally, I would buy that chutney in bulk if I could. Spicy, sour goodness. Combination Plate 3-Meat combo - I ordered my three favorites, Beef Shami and Chicken Shami and beef choplee. My absolute favorite is the choplee, it's ground meat with spices and onions, cooked to a brown crisp on both sides. The beef and chicken shami has great flavor and texture. On a side note, the beef and chicken kabobs are both good too, they actually know how to fully cook chicken without it being as hard as a hockey puck. The Basmati Rice is always cooked light and fluffy. No baklava this trip but I can vouch that it's legit. I eat here about every 2-3 weeks and I've tried most of their menu items. Stop by and eat here, you will walk away full and satisfied.

Yelp
What a cute eatery with a beautiful garden patio. I came for the first time with my family and was delighted with the quality of ingredients in the authentic dishes. Daal was fragrant and perfectly seasoned with traditional spices. Chicken kabob was juicy and delicious. Service was friendly and attentive. We will return!

Yelp
This is my togo afghan spot. The food is so flavorful and the staff are so nice! Always so satisfied!

Yelp
Lunch while waiting for tires at Costco about 5 blocks away. Home cooking, vegan friendly. Free convenient parking off street. The service is very courteous. Nice spices. Tablecloths too.

Renie H.

Yelp
The food was amazing, the service wonderful. A great place for lunch and a special occasion. Patio seating is available. Great service. And easy parking.

Zahia K.

Yelp
My family comes here and always orders the family special. I've been coming to this restaurant since I was in college and almost 20 years later I'm still a customer. Food is always good. One of my favorites is their dhaal - I can imagine not a lot of people think to order dhaal from a place that has a variety of kabobs, but it's delicious and wholesome, either with bread or rice. Customer service is good. They have an outdoor area that is also lovely to make salah at because it has a beautiful patio garden setup.

Yelp
The best kabob in the Area! flavour, the taste, everything! Highly recommend Outdoor seating too. The service was friendly

Yelp
Finally got around to trying this place and it did not disappoint! Tried the lamb wrap, the meat was really good quality and flavorful (even had a little kick to it). The employees are super friendly and welcoming, too. Total gem of a spot, will definitely be going back!

Yelp
Food is great, excellent, delicious, clean, service is amazing, friendly and very nice, parking is convenient. Prices are reasonable. Once you try your going to be customer for every. I love Chopan Kabab.

Yelp
Finally came here to try this restaurant after wanting to for so long. First off, heads up. There is no online ordering system (unless DoorDash...but that's only allowing group orders I think). In order to put in an order, you have to call them. But that was fairly easy on my part. Ordered the three kabob combo and substituted the chicken breast for lamb as well as the mantu. The mantu itself tasted pretty good but the major problem to it is that the wrapping of the dumpling is so wet that once you add more sauce to it, it completely is soggy and the skin breaks. It's a bit of a mess to eat. As for the kabob combo, the lamb was cooked really well and I loved the spice amount they used. The ground beef skewer was also really good too and flavorful. However...the beef tikka kabob was a bit over cooked. It was a bit tough to eat. The spices/flavor were there but it was more cooked medium well to well done in which I usually prefer more medium or medium rare. It's a pretty solid joint but there can definitely be improvements.

Yelp
Loved this place, the garden outside is just delightful and serene, then there is the food. I had the grilled chicken salad, nothing crazy but I will say the seasoning and cook on my chicken was excellent so I can only imagine the rest of the food. I will come back and be more adventurous next time, it was truly a great cooked chicken (I am a picky eater). My server was so kind, pleasant and I received everything I needed to enjoy my meal. By the way, they have baklava for dessert! Yes please. All in all, it was an excellent experience from a family owned restaurant and I encourage you to check them out, let's support our local businesses.

Julie H.

Yelp
The fish tandoori here is REAL good. They use hot plate for it and I have never had fish tandoori on a hot plate in the past!! Every Friday they have special menu (biryani). They also have baklava for dessert. Service is good and now they have a very nice outdoor seating in the back!!

Yelp
This place is like our family kitchen. We have been eating at this place for 9yrs. Everything tastes great! Highly recommend!

Yelp
Amazing food. Good portions, delicious. Lots of variety. Service was outstanding also.

Yelp
Though this place came highly recommended, the quality of Service was less than desirable. We paid for twice the Meat and twice the Yoghurt, neither of which was in the Kebab, when I asked about it the Cook in the Raiders Hat became unhinged and says I was being a racist. I asked for a refund on the lack of the paid extras I was suppose to receive and once again the circumstances became anything but desirable. We won't be returning.
