A solid 4.5/5 Mexican restaurant steak & al pastor tacos: 5/5 🌮 🌮 🌮 al pastor burrito: 3.5/5 (it's a bit of a weird mix, but my own fault) Homemade salsa: 10/5!!! SO good!!! Friendly service. The restaurant has its own parking lot.

I've seen this place and always wanted to try it, and then happened to be in the area around lunchtime. A small venue, but the menu is extensive and varied. I got the al pastor tacos and was not disappointed. Everything was good, but I especially enjoyed the salsa. It was unlike anything I have ever tasted. The flavor was intriguing - it had a sweet, smoky, almost fruity taste. The service was friendly and fast, and the place was hopping, even though it wasn't peak lunch hour. I will likely return to try some of the other offerings and to have some more of that interesting salsa.

Authentic Mexican restaurant. I ordered spicy pork tacos, and it was one of the best I had.

The Al Pastor Gordita I had today at Chunga’s was the best I’ve ever had! The shell was hot and crisp. And the meat was so flavorful. My kids tried the enchiladas and my husband had a smothered steak burrito. The chips and salsa were great. Everything was fresh and delicious. We were completely satisfied. The dining are was clean and the service was friendly and fast. Thank you!

THIS PLACE IS AMAZING! You need to come check them out! The owners are awesome! And serve some amazing food! Don't pass up on the chance to eat here!

The food is fantastic 🙌 Tastes authentic, great flavors, food was fresh and made to order. I think the tortillas were also handmade. Would definitely go back. The red chipotle sauce was our favorite. A great hole in the wall. Only cons: no a/c inside, small parking lot

I really enjoyed eating at this place. It was a quick in, a quick order, and the food came out quick. My whole visit took less than 30 minutes. The staff was quite helpful and polite. Lots of fun music and smiles to go around. It was almost like a fiesta, but that happens every day. Everything seemed quite clean and the food tasted amazing. I would absolutely stop here and eat again.

Very small place, about 10 tables. Small isn't bad. The food was pretty good but the service could have been better. My husband & I ate the Tacos combo, my father-in-law ate Enchiladas. Then we all had a Churro for dessert. Plus I had a Strawberry water/slush to drink.

I love everything about this place. I love the prices I love the food I love the ambience And I love the service . They are super efficient and totally cool and chill. They run a really tight clean business, I can tell. They don't demand tip as part of the transaction (I always love those places so I tip even more in the tip jar). This place is superb

When my husband and I are craving tacos we will drive all the way to Salt Lake City to get a Chunga's taco. They are amazing. I love the flavor of the steak and their salsas. They give complimentary chips and salsa with an order and if you combine their two salsas together it is incredible! Definitely worth the trip down.

Little hole in the wall. Good service, good menu but just like every other Mexican place I've tried in Utah, just not impressed with the flavors (depends what you're used to, I'm from California. It's just bland. Got the taco plate, the 'grilled' chicken looked boiled and had no flavor, the beef also didn't have any flavor. The only flavor I tasted was from the onions and cilantro on top and the lime I squeezed on it. And if you're eating there, you will smell like the food rest of the day. I'm still giving them 4 stars for the service and presentation.

The food is very good, and the staff were helpful and friendly. I recommend the Al Pastor tacos and the horchata. Very reasonable prices. Seating is limited and ambient music was a little load.

7 of us went here for dinner and we all had the most amazing authentic food. I got the nachos and they were so yummy and corn quesadillas was amazing and so were the churros!!! Everything was so yummy and the workers were very friendly and kind. They brought us waters and appetizers of chips and salsa. Definitely recommend if you want authentic mexican food and just a good meal !!!!!

The food here is amazing! They have this special of 20 mini Al pastor tacos for $20. You can't beat that for work lunches! The service is absolutely amazing too. Must try the CHIPS & Salsa!!

The first amazing thing about Chunga's is how it has remained Salt Lake's best Mexican restaurant for so many years. The second amazing thing about Chunga's is the fact that the first amazing thing hasn't rubbed off more on the general Mexican restaurant line-up in Salt Lake City, which--with the exception of the outstanding Rancho Markets--is shit. But that's probably less about Chunga's and more about how Salt Lake, and Utah generally, is deeply dedicated to shitty food (e.g. Red Iguana).

Food is great. Service is better than most. Very Happy to have them in Herriman now!

A friend recommended this Mexican restaurant, claiming it was authentic. I should have known better that Americans don't know what authentic Mexican food is. Disappointed with everything I tasted. Very grease, too! The location was not a good area. I don't recommend this place.

The inside is a bit rough but that's a good sign when it comes to street tacos! The al pastor tacos are next level. Probably the best I've ever had. You gotta try at least one - you won't regret it. Whenever I come into town, I make an effort to swing by - that's how good it is!

It's been a long time since I've been to Chunga's and I must have remembered it with extra nostalgia because my latest visit was a little disappointing. They are the OG for sure - they were around way before so many other popular taquerias popped up around the valley. But I was a little sad to see that it was dirty, full of flies because the doors were all opened (some A/C issues I guess), prices have gone up (understandable), and the service was sub-par. Their tacos are still good, but not the best. I like the al pastor best, but all the meats we ordered were very spicy (not advertised) and the kids with us couldn't enjoy them. The spiciness made the kids run for water but they told us there was no water except bottled water and that we could get sick if we had the tap water (?!) - what?! That was so confusing so we ordered Mexican bottled drinks. Also a little hard to enjoy your food when the tables and floors are sticky, trash is overflowing, and you're swatting flies the whole time. They forgot our churros and after we reminded them once, we had to remind them again before we finally got the order. I love me a hole-in-the-wall and don't mind authenticity, but they could step it up a notch.

Sophie was great taking my order and the food is excellent as usual! in my opinion they have the best pastor of any of the Mexican restaurants in the area.

Very tasty! We had steak quesadilla and steak nachos. Quesadilla came with salsa, nachos came with salsa and a creamy jalapeño sauce which was very good. Both were flavorful, well-seasoned, and generously portioned. Prices were reasonable. Service was friendly and prompt. Ambiance is definitely "hole in the wall".

A dive taqueria worth your attention. Not a fancy place, nor a brunch venue, or a date night kind of spot. The two taco combo, with rice, beans and fountain soda is perfect. Tacos were delicious; al Pastor, cilantro, onions, I added lime and their sauce. The tortillas were slightly crispy. Beans and Rice hit the spot.

Chungas! What a gem. This little place that's a little out of the way is worth seeking out. The Place. Chungas is great for a quick bite. You have quite a few options that are done pretty quick. The seating inside is a little limited, but it did look like there is seating outside. You could also take your food home and enjoy it there. The Food. I had the burrito and my friend had a taco salad. The burrito was huge and so tasty. My friend loved his salad too. I'd choose this place over any other fast mexican place in the city. I'll definitely be back.

This is the spot for delicious and reasonably priced Mexican food in Salt Lake. The portions are very large, and the taste/flavor are on point. This is a casual place, which means you can get great Mexican food very fast (and with friendly service). One of my favorite local spots.

It has a hole in the wall vibe (my favorite), with great food and great service. They are known for their pastor and it delivered! A little sweet, and savory- the perfect combo. We got the al pastor burrito and al pastor quesadilla which were both phenomenal. Prob one of the best Mexican places I've had in Utah. Can't wait to try more items, definitely check them out!

the food is great, service is usually pretty quick, and as a vegan they have some great options, but after eating here a few times i realized they are charging my debit card extra credit surcharge fees without disclosing at all, i had to ask why i was charged more than the total on the receipt and the kid working just told me it was a credit card fee (i used debit.) which is actually pretty illegal. don't know how they've gotten away with this for so long and have t gotten in trouble, but yeah its against the law to charge extra card fees without disclosing at all. hope i can work it out with them and get my money back from all the times ive eaten there but if not ill definitely have to file a complaint with attorney general, or the consumer financial protection bureau. somehow the burrito i order is listed as 9.50 but i end up being charged almost $14, doesn't make sense.

First trip to Herriman location. Matteo (Matthew) was outstanding in helping us decide what to order. Love that customer service. Food was plentiful and tasted great. Salsas had JUST the right amount of heat. Will visit again!

This place sucks!! I arrived during their advertised hours also listed on their door and they were closing early due to not having a customer for the last 1.5 hours. Bad service!!

Just good, authentic, Mexican food. I know this place is known for their al pastor, but for me, the Milanesa torta is where it's at! Pair it with a mango or pineapple juice and you've got yourself a solid, mouthwatering meal.

Best tacos Al pastor in SLC! Perfect guacamole. I have yet to have a bad dish here, and the staff are always so patient if I'm indecisive. It doesn't look like much from the outside, but it becomes a favorite for anyone we bring here.

If you're looking for affordable, amazing, hole in the wall street tacos, this is the place to go. Their El Pastore tacos are incredible. It's not bougie and it doesn't try to be, expect good food and you'll be satisfied.

Tacos are awesome. They're very authentic. This is a hidden gem . Don't let the exterior scare you away.

Man it doesn't look like much from the outside but the food here is tasty. We ordered online and got it earlier than expected. The enchiladas and tacos were super tasty.

Update-I've since moved away, but this is a sacred pilgrimage every time I'm back in Utah. I don't care what else you're considering. If you like Mexican food, this is where you should go, and then you should probably get something with Al Pastor.

If you haven't been here you're blowing it. So much better than Rancherito's or gual's and so much fresher. I'd you find yourself over this way you have to stop here. Burritos, tacos and quesadillas are all delicious.

The outside and inside of this place are not super enticing but these tacos are amazing. I've come several times over the last few years and the food here is consistently so good. The al pastor taco combo is my go-to. Anything with al pastor here is amazing!! I've also ordered the torta which is yummy (and so filling) but the tacos are my favorite. If you're local and haven't been here yet, you definitely need to stop in!!

Best f***ing burrito ever. Pastor is amazing. Red or green sauce you can't go wrong. Green is the go to.

The food here is top-notch. There is a small indoor space and a large, dog-friendly covered patio. It isn't 'pretty' from the outside, but the food and friendly service absolutely rock.

I used to love this place. Almost like they are driving away business. Ridiculously loud music, no AC, no fountain drinks, abrupt slow service. Case study on how to destroy good will.

How can you see world famous Al pastor on the outdoor menu multiple times and not come in to try them? My only regret was trying the other meats and not just sticking to the Al Pastor. That's a joke though, all their meats were great! We loved the nachos and tacos and went back multiple times. A crowd pleaser among our group of 3!

tried chungas for the first time and was not disappointed at all! one of the best street style tacos by far in the slc area-- I got the tacos al pastor-- pork with pineapple, cilantro, onions as well as cucumbers! highly recommend ordering tacos al pastor as this is what they're most known for! tacos also come with beans and rice on the side paired with lime

Great tasting food! You order at the counter and pay right then, and they bring your food out to you. A little different than most Mexican Restaurants I've been to, but it totally worked. BUSY BUSY BUSY though! I ordered the chicken quesadilla on corn, I didn't know it was fried (which made it a little tricky to eat) but it had a great flavor to it. The carne asada nachos were baller too. But the real trick is in the ranch salsa--I WAS PRACTICALLY LICKING IT OUT OF THE CONTAINER. (Notice I had to cut my date out of the photo, there's no way he's going out with me after seeing me drunk that stuff like a ravenous wolf). The employees were great and very easy to talk with. They knew what they were doing and what to recommend, and they were quick to take our order and get it out to us! The only downside is the location. Hardly any parking, you have to park on the road or just in the grass behind someone else and hope you finish your meal first or else they're just stuck. We ate outside and leaves and seeds from the trees blew off the little roof and landed rock smack dab in our food. It got in my hair and clothes too, but I was definitely more concerned about the nachos I was helping my date finish (oh gosh, after talking through this, I think I've figured out why I'm still single...) but all-in-all, I'd go back! What's life if you don't live with a little apprehension of a potential sequoia tree growing in your gut? The restrooms are one-holers, located outside the building. TIPS & TRICKS: * Try to drive with a group, the less cars the better when it comes to trying to find a space.

Love me some $ Mexican food that's high quality! I really enjoyed my spicy pork burrito to go. It was hot. I got the spicy red sauce and I highly recommend that. I thought I'd want my own Cholula on it when I got home, but the sauce they gave was so delectable, I didn't even use it. It's a big, hefty burrito and I was hungry. I recommend getting it if you're starving. My friend had the nachos and I had a couple which were so good. The staff is super nice and is practicing safe social distancing measures. The food is relatively cheap as well, and for the quality of the food, it's a bargain.

How have I never reviewed chungas?! We order from here almost weekly. Our family favorite are the chicken enchiladas. They are so delicious and we never get tired of them. Their spicy ranch is so good! We will often order some extra to go with our meal. The guacamole is really good too!! We typically order on door dash and it comes quickly and still tastes great. We really should branch out, but I found something I love and never stray. We love Chungas!

Customer service and food were fantastic. Elizabeth V. took our order, and this being our first time, she took extra time and explained the menu. We ordered her favorite dish (Gordita) and it was delicious! The restaurant was clean and well organized. We will for sure be coming back.

Grubhubed this for lunch and I couldn't run for the bathroom quick enough after eating it. Might be a good choice if you're constipated.

Delicious food, large portions, all for a great price! It's Friday night and the restaurant is packed! I ordered the al pastor enchiladas and found an open seat. Complimentary chips were served with salsa and a cilantro sauce, it was divine. My huge plate of enchiladas arrived and I was more than ecstatic to dig in. I asked the server for hot sauce but she never came by with them, so I brushed it off and kept eating. Later, I pulled two short strands of hair out of my bean. Because the servers seemed busy, I didn't say anything. Let's just hope I don't get sick tomorrow. Overall, the food is really good; cleanliness and sanitation... well, they can work on that.

Chungas is one of the great spots that's low on price but high on quality. The Mushroom Burrito, smothered with both red and green sauce, was fantastic. The mushrooms, rice, and beans were seasoned so each bite was full of flavor. Most Mexican restaurants just wrap the ingredients in the tortilla and slap some salsas on top, calling it a day, but Chungas burrito was phenomenally flavorful! And at $8, it's infinitely better than a similar (or more expensive) burrito from Chipotle. I loved the red sauce more than green but glad I got both! The Chips, Guac, and Salsa were similarly very flavorful. I liked that the order came with all the salsas to try. My favorite was the roasted, smoky one. The Churro tasted of fresh oil (I hate when it's greasy and tastes like it was cooked two days ago) and was smothered in chocolate and whipped cream. It was perfect. If it had been cooked fresh it would've been even better.

A longtime resident of my "must-visit" restaurant list, I was excited to pass by Chungas while running some errands, and decided to finish my shopping, and then head there for dinner. I arrived right at 6pm, grabbed one of the last two (limited) parking spaces, and made my way in. There is seating both inside and out, but much more outdoors. That area appeared to be covered, so should be a nice option except in the most extreme weather conditions. I placed my to-go order with a nice fellow at the cash register, and as soon as I walked to a table to wait, a line started to form. It took fifteen minutes for my food to be prepared, and by the time I left, the line had grown so long it was snaking out the back door, and contained a minimum of thirty people. Yikes! Based on my wait, I am afraid to even imagine the length of time those people had to stick around for their orders. I had the taco salad with their famed al pastor. I took it home, and it survived the trip decently, though of course the tortilla shell got soggy. There is no way to avoid that, and I don't usually eat them anyways, so no big deal. The lettuce was fresh, the beans were good, and the meat was fine though, at least in this application, did not stand out as anything spectacular. The order in which the ingredients of the salad were placed created an unappetizing layer of rice, cheese, and beans that stuck to the bottom. I did not love the super soft rice, but I am a dedicated cheese fanatic, so was a little sad that portion was ruined. I would have preferred the cheese sprinkled on top. I also ordered chips and guacamole, and the latter was a great rendition. Not spicy at all, yet still flavorful, and very chunky (my personal preference). My husband had the corn quesadilla (loved the switch over flour tortilla!) and torta, both with grilled steak, and sadly, I must say I liked the steak better than my al pastor, not to mention just generally enjoyed his selections more than mine. Of note, they offer several options for vegetarian or vegan friendly meals, including substituting meat with zucchini blossoms, nopales, or mushrooms. They do not have a salsa bar, which made me sad, but I was happy to discover cups of several varieties in my bag. I missed the ubiquitous pickled vegetables found at nearly every other Mexican restaurant, though. Prices averaged about $10 per entrée, so entirely reasonable, though you can certainly find similar meals for less in SLC. Everything was tasty, some things delicious, but not so much that I would ever wait more than ten minutes for it, and I get the feeling a long wait is commensurate with dining at Chungas. Admittedly, I am impatient, but time is valuable! I passed so many other Mexican restaurants (and even grocery stores that serve prepared food!) in this area, and the majority would do the trick of satisfying my cravings just as well.
