I’ve now visited City Cellar twice—both times with a reservation—and both times the service was painfully slow. Despite the restaurant not being at full capacity, it took an excessive amount of time to be greeted, place an order, and receive food. As other reviewers have noted, the kitchen pace is sluggish, and there’s no sense of urgency from the staff.
The final straw came during Houston Restaurant Weeks. One person in our party wanted to order from the Restaurant Weeks menu, but we were told everyone at the table would be required to order from it if one person did. The reasoning? They claimed it was “a discount” and didn’t want people “sharing food without getting the full meal.” This was petty to begin with—but in our case, the second person in the two-person party was a tentative guest who would be arriving much later, meaning there was zero risk of sharing food. Despite this, they still insisted on enforcing the policy.
To make matters worse, they openly stated this was also an effort to “get their cost per customer up,” which is not the customer’s problem—especially when the event is a fundraiser for charity, not a coupon special.
When I asked to speak to a manager, I was given the runaround and eventually had someone pulled from the kitchen—who was clearly not management—come speak with me instead. The approach felt evasive, unprofessional, and frankly, disrespectful.
Between the chronic slow service, petty and misinformed policies, and lack of transparency from staff, I cannot recommend City Cellar. Houston has too many restaurants that deliver both quality food and respectful, attentive service to waste time and money here.
