Civil Coffee Review - Highland Park - Los Angeles - The Infatuation

"Civil Coffee’s original Highland Park location is the most spacious of its three branches, and a great spot to kill an hour with a nice latte. The tall ceilings make it feel bright and airy, and there’s a shaded outdoor patio for stretching your legs. Stop by for a brunch-y meal before 2pm, including a solid avocado toast with labneh, mint, and a mound of peas that adds creaminess (it’s also on Bub & Grandma’s sourdough, which is half the reason it’s good). Studio City Is About to Get Really, Really Good Coffee, Courtesy of Civil - Eater LA

The food was delicious!! Wouldn’t have expected it from a coffee shop, but one of the best breakfast spots I’ve been to in a while. What really won me over was that the chilaquiles were actually spicy🌶️!! Coffee was solid I got the vanilla latte (good amount of coffee flavor, the vanilla didn’t mask it).

Google
It’s official I really love highland park. This Civil location is tucked away in the cutest area by a railroad. Interior is nice, lots of seating, good vibes. Drink was solid— they were out of a few things so had to pivot, but it was great. I don’t think Civil would be a regular spot for me, but it’s certainly a solid one and good for studying.

My girlfriend and I both loved this spot. The vibe is clean and minimalist. Service was nice and we received the food pretty fast. About 5-10 minute wait. Plenty of inside and outside seating with plenty shade. The food was amazing and the coffee was just great! Highly recommended!

To be fair - cold brew here is pretty solid and I’ve visited many times before but just had a hilarious interaction that will make me think twice about returning. Ordered a black cold brew with no ice because I have an early flight and wanted quality am coffee. Person at register told me it wouldn’t be filled to the top. Hm… how weird… but fair warning I guess. Tipped her a buck and moved to the counter. I get my coffee and it’s barely half full… and I’m an optimist! Lol, I thought she meant… maybe an inch of room at the top… but hard line at half full. Asked for clarification and while the baristas were super polite and friendly, even offering to fill it up the rest of the way for an additional $1.75 my flabbers were gasted. Lol? This is $5.50 worth of coffee apparently typically crammed with lots of ice. Here’s the thing, I would have spent way more money over my lifespan there than the 15 cents worth of product they would have lost out on by filling that to the top. What a silly hill to die on. Can’t speak to anything else at Civil but I can tell you that when superior choices like Kindness and Mischief or Jane are available in the neighborhood, there’s no reason to come here for cold brew.

The Chocolate Hazelnut Croissant was as good as I hoped it would be! Every bite was heaven! Twice-baked chocolate croissant filled with hazelnut praline cream & topped with toasted almonds, powdered sugar and dark chocolate. My husband ordered the Figueroa coffee & he keeps saying that it was the best coffee!!!! Parking available in the back. Restroom available for customers. Plenty of shaded seating outside too. Overall a perfectly pleasant experience.

Google
How do you create a coffee shop that caters to the Highland Park crowd? Civil has the checklist: boxes of fresh coffee beans for $25, check! A drink menu that makes me veer from my staple cortado, check! Two random bowling balls next to the cream and sugar, check! I love this place, love their coffee, love the adorable young lady taking the orders and most of all love the Figueroa!

Coffee is delectable. Service is great. Vibes are wonderful. Lots of indoor and outdoor seating. Food is marvelous. I dont know how they do the eggs like that. Woww

Google
One of the best Kougn aman I've ever had. Came for the coffee but the baked goods were the real star of this spot. There is a parking lot in the back that's only $0.50 per hour and if you're lucky you can find some street parking. There are a good number of seats and a really nice interior and ambiance but it was completely full and we stopped by on a Saturday morning. There's also a patio in the back with some covered seating if the weather is nice. Services great and they have some signature coffee drinks that looks interesting and unique. We opted for the seasonal pumpkin spice latte and espressotonic. Drinks were a little sweeter than I would have liked but were great.

Yelp
Figueroa hot really good like a hug in a cup. Good variety of pastries and selection of food . Parkings kinda rough but nice vibes and plenty of seating .

Yelp
I visited Civil Coffee with the specific intention of getting some work done. The space definitely gives off that vibe -- clean interior, dedicated workspaces, and even a cozy little back patio perfect for sipping a drink while working. But surprisingly, there's no WiFi. For a coffee shop that clearly markets itself as a place to linger and be productive, the lack of internet access felt like a major letdown. I paid close to $20 for a latte and a buttered croissant -- both fine, but not exceptional. The croissant seemed more like a store-bought option than something baked in-house, and at that price point, I expected more. It's hard not to feel like the cost isn't matching the experience. The restroom was at least very clean, though there's only one available for the entire shop, so expect a wait if it's busy. Overall, Civil Coffee has a nice aesthetic, but the substance doesn't match the style -- especially for anyone looking to get work done or simply relax with reliable amenities. I won't be rushing back.

Yelp
Civil has pretty mid coffee but a decent matcha latte and a stellar chocolate chip cookie. Love their outdoor patio. Overall, I'd recommend Kindness & Mischief or Tierra Mia nearby instead. Tip: The servers are pretty rude only until you match their energy.

Yelp
Thought the oat milk vanilla shaken espresso drink (with black Hawaiian salt??) was overpriced at near 7.00 and had a nasty aftertaste. Staff was not really friendly. They don't have a menu for you to look at until you get up to the counter (on the countertop) so it's sort of an awkward rushed ordering, unless you know what you want ahead of time. It is large and spacious, but loud and not somewhere I'd sit to read or study or relax. I tossed the drink out after a few gross sips and figured I should've taken my 7 bucks elsewhere for the afternoon caffeine fix.

Yelp
I've tried several drinks. From cortados, iced drinks, regular drip. All were fantastic coffees. I also love the coffee beans they sell. A must try coffee shop! Staff has always been friendly.
google avatar

Alisa M.

Yelp
Their drink came with a little cookie which was cute. The latte was delicious but didn't particular wow me perhaps I ordered the wrong item. A great spot to come alone or with someone. There's some seating and it's conveniently located by shops.

Yelp
I came to get some work done which isn't the best because there is no WiFi, but if you can be offline or if you can tether this spot is great. Parking felt pretty easy with street parking out front / nearby. I ordered the hojicha latte. The toasted flavor of the tea was what I always look for and this one had it. It could've been warmer cuz I love my drinks scalding and I even asked for it to be extra hot but it still came out only warm. That' said, the server and baristas were nice and quick to get the drink ready. Tons of seating but also very busy so still a potential to not find a spot. The place seems like a solid spot and if I'm in the area, I'd definitely come back!

Yelp
Civil Coffee was great! The matcha is tasty and it was quick! Lots of indoor seating which is nice. Did not try any of the food but would love to next time I come back. The cashier was very friendly and welcoming.

Yelp
I must be a Civil Coffee fan because this is now my 3rd one I've tried around the city! Up in Highland Park, this location is actually their OG shop. Tons of indoor seating and their cold brews are always perfect! I'm a big fan of the basic black at Civil Coffee, both iced and just plain ol' drip. Their baked goods always hit and in particular, the chocolate chip cookie is one I keep ordering again and again. Service is great, goods are great, what more could a coffee girl ask for?!

Yelp
I stopped here while visiting this area and it was packed! Clearly a very loved coffee shop in this area and I can see why. There was a ton of space to hangout/work. The line was long but went quickly and the baristas were super sweet. I ordered an iced vanilla latte and it was pretty good. A little too sweet for me personally. I would definitely come back and try some of their signature lattes I just couldn't decide on one in the moment.

Tania C.

Yelp
Pale, milky matcha and it's even lighter in person. There's absolutely no matcha flavor at all. It doesn't matter whatever matcha blend you use if you can't even put enough in the first place.

Yelp
Civil Coffee (est 2016) is a modern coffee shop located in gentrified Highland Park neighborhood of NorthEastern LA. Owned by the Morales brothers. It has modest selection of coffee, teas, pastries and food. They have merch and coffee bags for purchase. Of their three locations this is the most spacious and popular among locals. I arrived on a weekend, as a first time customer, and was met by a long line. However, that didn't dampen my spirit for it was moving at a modest rate. I ordered an Iced Coffee, Hot Latte and Avocado Toast. Both coffee drinks were perfectly brewed and concocted to my liking. Similarly, my AT on thick sourdough was delightful and tasty not to mention its beautiful presentation. Staff were amiable and professional. Atmosphere was relaxing. No Wifi available which was very surprising and disheartening. Coffee shop without wifi? It's like the most basic requirement. Prices were economically fair. Rear parking lot and side street parking available. In this voluminous review, it's time to make a conclusion. Overall, it is a great coffee shop and I highly recommend.

Yelp
I love Civil coffee! The space is clean, simple, and has great high ceilings with lots of light. There's also a huge back patio with a lot of shady seating. Their coffee is great... whether you're getting simple drip coffee or espresso based drinks. Love an iced latte here. Their avocado toast is also one of my favorites... it has peas on top with this lovely lemony drizzle. So good! The pastries are great too. The service is pretty quick and everyone working has always been very nice. There's plenty of metered parking around Fig and 57th.

Yelp
Great place to enjoy coffee with friends. Taste of coffee is great and the service is excellent. Friends love coming to this place for drinks. Would recommend to friends and family.
google avatar

Jessica C.

Yelp
The worst matcha latte I've ever had lol. They had a matcha flat white and matcha latte and I asked the cashier about the differences. He gave a bit of a rude response that did not explain much of what the differences were. I settled for the $6+ matcha latte which was almost entirely all ice, and absolutely no matcha flavor. It was the most pale green color. It was essentially a $6 cup of milk. I had my husband try it as well and he barely tasted the matcha as well. I saw some other people with matcha drinks that were much more green so it just seemed like they are very inconsistent with their drinks. Not worth the money.
google avatar

Hannah S.

Yelp
Big space, lots of tables, and outdoor seating too! I got one of their specialty iced lattes, the one with cinnamon that came with a small biscuit-like cookie on the side. If I lived in Highland park I'd be coming here a lot!

Yelp
Came here for a morning coffee before going on a small hike. For 9:00 AM, they were quite packed, which I was pretty amazed. I started getting hyped for the coffee while I waited in line. While I was standing there, I saw the pastries they had and saw a croissant with a pickle and swiss cheese stabbed on top of it with a toothpick. I ended up getting an iced latte and the croissant. The coffee was good, nothing spectacular but above average. The croissant was really good, but I wished I had asked them to heat it up because it probably would have tasted 10 times better. Overall, good coffee, good pastries, good parking (there's a private lot behind the cafe), good place for a quick breakfast and coffee.

Bella H.

Yelp
I don't usually write reviews but this place is crazy. Mexican owned and selling Mexican coffee doesn't excuse how this place involves itself in the gentrification of highland park. The coffee is mid at best and the attitude of some of the employees is crazy. Plus no WiFi! Which is crazy because most people go to coffee shops to work or study, that's half of the reason we pay double what a coffee should even be! This place should definitely do more for the community than just profit off them.

Yelp
Another amazing 3rd wave cafe in highland park! The space was beautiful, high ceilings, very industrial and clean, with a large staff who were talkative and friendly. The Americano was absolutely great and it looking forward to going back. Street parking of course, given the area. Ample seating, indoors and in the back patio.

Yelp
You know we had to start off 2024 on the right foot so I visited this coffeehouse on January 1st. It was my intent to get a coffee and a pastry but all of the pastries were gone by the time I got there. I'm not a fan of having coffee with a lunch/dinner item but I was left with no choice as I was hungry. Also note the line was very long that day but it could have been attributed to the holiday. Nonetheless, the line moved fast and my order didn't take long to prepare. My reason for visiting was to try the coffee with lavender syrup, The Arroyo. I went with how the barista recommended, which was hot with oatmilk. This drink was very good and I will definitely be back to have it again. As is customary for me, I poured half of my drink into some ice so I could get a feel for how it tasted both hot and cold. I liked it equally well hot and cold. As far as food goes, the barbacoa tacos sounded the best on the menu. These little tacos did not disappoint. The shredded beef was perfection paired with pickled onions (one of the few ways I'll eat onions). The chili salsa complemented the tacos perfectly; don't omit this if you're worried about the spice level (it wasn't spicy). Parking was fairly easy. There's a metered lot right behind the coffeehouse. Just note that the meters are so old you can't see the time you have left (it's $0.25 per hour/2 hrs max). My recommendation is just insert $.50 and you're safe with two hours. This place has an outside seating are, which is a plus on beautiful days. Also, this is doggo heaven so have your petting hands ready to pet tons of doggos.

Jesse J.

Yelp
I was just there for the first time. My partner got a coffee and was looking for the sweet cookie. I found them and opened the container. Realizing there wasn't tong's I paused and looked at him. As I did. The employee working next to them rudely grabbed the container and with an attitude told me "you can't grabbed them! They're only for a specific drink. But here you go!" it gave me a bad feeling and made me feel very uncomfortable. I don't want to throw the race card but the Caucasian female with pigtails made it feel very targeted. Will never go in there again. I tried calling but the system is outdated, no one answers and hangs up on me
google avatar

Chloe H.

Yelp
Best Civil Coffee location I've visited so far - mainly due to the service! The cashier who took my order and barista who made my drinks were both awesome. Sometimes I feel like the service at these 3rd wave coffee shops are just plain awful, but these two made my day. As for the coffee, my cappuccino tasted great and my friend enjoyed her matcha latte.
google avatar

Jerusalem M.

Yelp
Civil Coffee was such a aesthetically pleasing café. The Barista 's were very friendly. Everything was so clean and had a lot of good natural lighting. The coffees were also great.
google avatar

Yelp
wow!! this drink has been one of my favorites so far in terms of coffee. there's plenty of seating and delicious pastries/food. there's one hour metered parking on the street and residential parking nearby. highly recommend!
google avatar

Yelp
I went today first time to that place i didn't know where the line start so the cashier was kind of rude to me plus it took me a while to order and coffee that they serve me was not hot I'll never come back here any more .

Yelp
Found this gem while waiting for some breakfast. Mexican-Born homegrown I was captivated by the outside. Entering in I was greeted with incredible music and a smiling barista. I ordered the Figueroa which came with a Maria cookie and that brought my inner child complete joy! 10/10 recommend!!

Yelp
Rude staff, lots of attitude, fine space and okay coffee but ruined by the quality of service.
google avatar

Yelp
Great coffee, great food menu, awesome space. When the weather is comfortably warm I really like their back patio. Pastries and breakfast burritos are excellent.
google avatar

Kyle J.

Yelp
Large space, with a great selection of kitchen prepared foods and fresh pastries on display. Modern feel, and ample seating-though due to its popularity, good luck finding a seat. A veritable hipster paradise, you'll be sure to see a wide walk of people, and personalities here. Standard Flat White was ordered, and was a good pull and a nice pour-even being a to-go order, they still managed a decent latte art design as well-Kudos to the hard working Baristas for still having pride in the product. Only downside, No military discount, so if any Veterans out there looking for a little appreciation for your sacrifice to our country, keep searching because that won't be found here sadly. Minus a star for anti-patriotism haha
google avatar

Stella L.

Yelp
Walked by and saw it was pretty packed on a weekday morning, every table is taken. Decided to check it out and ordered: - Smoked Salmon Toast (Love the presentation, just looking at the colors makes me happy! Glad it taste as good as it looks) Thumbs up! - Hot Chocolate (Wasn't my fav, taste very bland) Great atmosphere! Convenient street parking with meter! No wifi!

Yelp
This a lot is right along my drive to work and decided to pop in. I was very surprised to find it to have so much inside seating for just a coffee shop. It doesn't look like much from outside But I am definitely a fan! The staff here is great, every time they have been super helpful and patient. Looks like it gets busy pretty often as well so be patient yourself. Coffee and food is great here so I will definitely be bad. My go to is their drip coffee and a burrito. Parking can be a bit challenging but not terrible. Stop by and give this place a visit next time you are around.

Yelp
Rude service, wow, guys, it's a Sunday. Relax. I came in here to wait for the two coffees my husband had ordered. I was with my toddler in her stroller and my 5 year old, waiting on the side along the wall with other people waiting. The bus woman not once but twice rudely walked between us/behind us to pass through saying "Excuse me" literally 3 times the second time (beetlejuice, anyone?) even though both the first and second time we politely and quickly moved out of her way. Chill, lady. Are you rushing off to emergency surgery or something? You're delivering food and coffee to a bunch of patrons lounging on their laptops on a sunny Sunday afternoon. When I told the girl who gave me my coffee how rude the woman was, no joke, she said to me, "I'm sorry, she's having a really bad day." Really?? Lol. I worked at restaurants as a server for many years and know very well what good service looks and feels like. What's more, the iced coffee with soy milk my husband ordered for me was 99.9% coffee and a hint of milk. Come on, guys, cheap with your soy milk, too? No thanks. Plenty of other great coffee shops in the area whose management thinks better than to excuse a pouty, aggressive employee with "she's having a bad day."

Yelp
Missed this place since I moved away. Went back today. Definitely not the same anymore. Drinks were not made well. Customer service was very poor. Cashier was rude.

Yelp
I'm on a mission to explore more places in my neighborhood and Civil Coffee was next on my list. I stopped in to pick up something for my hairdresser on my way to my appointment. When I walked in I smelled bacon and baked goods. I'm guessing it was the ham & cheese croissants fresh out of the oven. Gina greeted me with a cheerful smile. She was so sweet. The shop is spacious with plenty of seating. There's also an outdoor back patio and merchandise for sale. In addition to pastries they also serve fancy toasts, breakfast burritos, and other breakfast items. I ordered an almond croissant for my hairdresser and a coffee cake donut for myself. I heard The Figueroa was their signature drink, so I got that too. It's made with espresso & sweetened condensed milk topped with cinnamon. It also comes with a Marias Gamesa cookie. You can order it hot or iced. I got mine hot. It was well balanced. The coffee wasn't overpowering, and it wasn't sweet. If you prefer a stronger coffee flavor I suggest an extra shot of espresso. If you like sweet drinks then you can some sugar. For me, it was perfect. The cinnamon was a nice addition. The drink reminded me of Horchata. The coffee cake donut wasn't a donut. It was a small cake in the shape of a donut with a crumb topping. It tasted like a spice cake and was moist and light on the sweetness scale. The crumb top had cinnamon flavor. It paired perfectly with my coffee. My hairdresser enjoyed the croissant. She said it was buttery, flaky, and had a nice almond flavor. *Metered parking out front and in the lot behind the store.

Yelp
Great coffee, great croissants. Lovely outdoor section. A staple for the area and good ambiance

Yelp
This place is on a busy street. You may find street parking, but if not, there is a small parking lot in the back. I parked in the back and entered through the back. This place was busy and has indoor and outdoor seating. Inside is clean and pretty narrow. I ordered the iced matcha latte and a vanilla iced latte. Both were average.

Sam M.

Yelp
Coffee was eh, and service was even more eh. Asked for a couple recommendations and they said very rudely "I can't choose for you...". Not sure if I'll come back cause the drink ordered was expensive and tasted just okay.
google avatar

Yelp
I love this coffee shop. I still have yet to try the food but their coffee is amazing! We are always looking for good coffee places and so far they have been disappointing but this place is just so great the staff is so friendly and personal and the vibes are just awesome.
google avatar

Ruben G.

Yelp
Good coffee better service. Tucked away in small shop, there is always a line that feeds through rather quickly. You order and receive a number. There is plenty of indoor and a large outdoor area for sitting. I order the espresso tonic, which did not disappoint. And chilaquiles. The chilaquiles took a bit to come out. The staff alerted us to the delay and with out us asking they comped them. That is great service. Will be returning.
google avatar

Rochelle J.

Yelp
Love the interior Decor and Outdoor vibes. I tired the Houjicha latte and it was great. The bakery items and chilliquiles looked so good we planned another visit soon to try it!

Yelp
Didn't try the food, service was friendly and prompt. Ambiance was homey and quiet. Coffee turn around was swift !
google avatar

Leslie L.

Yelp
The Figueroa Coffee tasted like just milk, with a small hint of coffee. More milk taste than coffee. I asked the barista to remake it and he did. I asked for the lavender latte instead. This drink was better, and the taste of lavender was perfect. Could have had a stronger coffee flavor to it, but overall the drink was good. THERE IS NO WIFI. So don't plan on staying here to study unless you are going to use your hotspot or don't need to use the internet. Ambiance is nice. Interior decorations are very nice. Parking is on the street.
google avatar

Yelp
The pros: *Amazing avocado toast. *Really good breakfast burritos. *I've only ever had the Figueroa specialty and it has become my go-to. *Cool place to hang out (seats inside and outside) and great location (in the heart of Fig). The downside: *The outdoor tables is next to the dumpster. The smell is foul. *You can clearly see multiple rodent traps outside. *Some of the folks at the register have an attitude :( *Every time I ask for easy ice (I'm a regular), they keep flatly telling me that I won't get any more milk or coffee to make up the difference (I never ask for it) *Even though, when there is no ice, my drink is not even 30% full in the cup. *The online order is useless because they don't make the drink until you first get a notification that your order is ready (but it's not), because their system is for you to check in first and then they'll make your order (but it still enters the regular queue) - so you still have to wait quite awhile (again, even though it says your order is ready) I want to continue supporting this place as it's my local fave (I walk here every other day) but it's just discouraging getting the same dirty unamused looks and trying to ignore the smells outside.

Yelp
The OG shop and the nicest one!!! I love all Civil coffee shops but this one just stands out which I love. Came in on a pretty busy Saturday morning but didn't have to wait long at all- line went by fast and coffees came out quick. I asked for an iced Honey Vanilla Latte (which they make amazingly) - accidentally got a hot one and the barista had no problem remaking an iced one which I appreciate! Loved the very retro vibe of the place, the color scheme and decor was very calming and cool. Whatever they're doing, they're doing it right! Has anyone tried the Figueroa?? I always want to try but chicken out- let me know if it's a good one please!

Yelp
Very cute and quaint coffee shop with small bites in Highland Park. Would recommend of your in the area. I had a lavender latte and avacado toast, which were both quite good. Will definitely go back the next time I'm in the area.
google avatar

Yelp
There is no wifi which makes this place basically irrelevant. Their food is good though.

Channary V.

Yelp
Tip: they have plenty of outdoor seating in the back of the shop, connected to a parking lot with plenty of spots to park at. They also have plenty seating indoor as well, but it seems really packed, even on a Thursday morning at 9 AM lol. And The service is excellent! not just my cashier but also the lady who brings me my breakfast is very friendly. :) I've been meaning to come here for a while, finally made it. It really did not disappoint, satisfied my phone is off spice latte without too much espresso concentration. Both of my Avocado toast and The Figueroa are 5 stars! I love the uniqueness of sweet pea on top of my avocado, and the lovely flower petals! Surprisingly, it's such a big piece of sourdough, I think it's perfectly for sharing. I was hesitant between the House Chai and the Figueroa, but I felt adventurous and thought I'd give the Figure a try since my go to is always chhay latte. And I LOVE IT! I secretly enjoy that piece of biscuit the most before I finished the whole mug of the drink.
