Four Chicago-Area Restaurant Shutters to Know - Eater Chicago

"Clarke’s, the longtime Lakeview/Boystown diner, is closed again at 930 W. Belmont Avenue. Ownership posted a colorful Facebook post saying they’re trying to reach a new deal with their landlord, but may have to look for a new location: “We had problems with the landlord who was negligent with the building and had severe building violations which were a safety concern. He was basically a slum landlord who caused negligent damage to the building along with the franchisee,” the Facebook post read. It’s another chapter in the saga which has seen repeated closings and a name change in recent years." - Daniel Gerzina

Super attentive wait staff and great food! For $10 I got what you see below. Very delicious and filling portions. Definitely planning on coming back here

We were looking for a restaurant open for breakfast at 6am, and we found Clarke's. The greenery was beautiful, and the food was delicious. The service was fast and attentive, though that may be related to the lack of customers due to how early we were there.

Nice atmosphere food was OK I gave it 3 stars. Awesome waiter! So for two breakfast platters and 3 burgers my bill was $90 . OMG ...wanted to try something new for my first time visiting the city close to my hotel. Not the same ol' subway or McDonald's I can get n my hometown. If ur looking to spend a butt load this is right up ur ally. But I never expected my bill to b that high. If ur looking to save your $ to spend on something more magical to do with ur family. Don't eat here

My first and only experience here was a mixed bag. I appreciated them being an option at 3am when most places are closed. The coffee was tasty and the service attentive. However my pancake tasted a bit off -- like it had been mixed with something strange on the griddle -- and they were out of multiple items -- notably pancake syrup! It wasn't a terrible experience so I may return but expectations will be low

I love late-night food spots and Clarke's is a staple if you're in the area. The portions are big, the food is cheap but very tasty and it's open late! I've always had good service there - even late at night - but I have to imagine that if you get a rowdy crowd in there, service may suffer a bit. The feel of the place is like an old-school ,wood-paneled diner from your grandma's era. This is not a date place. But it's a great place to make one last post-bar memory and not go home hungry.

With a great retro outdoor sign with the tag line : oh my you should eat! How could I resist going on and checking out what they had to offer. I'm so glad I did. This all American diner has a huge menu to choose from. They had everything from all day breakfast, to lunch sandwiches to hearty burgers and mains. My wife and I seriously had a hard time choosing what to eat. I finally decided and got their signature burger. I was going for quantity as they were trumping the size of their party on the menu. I got quantity but even better, I got quality as well. The beef patty was grilled to perfection. It was slightly charred on the outside and juicy on the inside. The bun was also slightly toasted and the condiments ensured that here wasn't a dry bite. The prices are reasonable, the servers are enthusiastic and friendly and the decor is oh so retro, giving it a nice American diner atmosphere. Definitely worth another visit.

Reasonable prices with mixed results each visit. Veggies in the salad didn't look very fresh and came served in a hot bowl just out of the dishwasher, which didn't help. I've had better experience with their breakfast offerings.

I understand when the kitchen is backed up, it happens! But don't apologize three times in an hour of waiting and not offer anything for inconvenience. Our waiter even charged us for gratuity which would have been understandable if we didn't have to wait so long. We also waited an hour after we got or food for a check, only that we were able to get his attention because it seemed he forgot about our table. Then, he handed us one check without asking how we want our bill made and made it seem an inconvenience that we have cards, not cash, so the bill would need to be split. All in this, there was a line at the door waiting for tables, so you would think that waiters would be eager to hand checks out soon after the food came out, not an hour later. Overall, the rating is two stars because the food was delicious, at least!
