"Whether or not we want to admit it, vegetable-focused restaurants in this city have a pretty big disadvantage to overcome. While most Chicagoans like vegetables just fine, many of us are more acquainted with the meat sweats. This means that if a place specializing in vegetarian or vegan food wants attention, they need to be doing something pretty interesting. On top of that, a lot of really good vegetable spots have opened recently, so the competition is stiff. While Clever Rabbit’s vegetarian food is good for people who already really like vegetables, it might not be inventive enough to impress anyone else. The restaurant itself is enjoyable, and has a lot going for it in terms of atmosphere. The inside is dark, with dangly lightbulb lights and loudish music that gives it a clubby feel. There’s a huge outdoor patio that’s great for hanging out with a group in warmer weather, and an accent wall covered in faux grass that we can only assume is trying to let you know what you’re in for food-wise. photo credit: Sandy Noto Most of the items here are gluten-free, dairy-free, vegan, or vegetarian - but that doesn’t mean they’re all healthy. Many dishes are fried, and we can’t blame them for this: it’s an easy way to make everything taste better. There’s a kale salad, and they take the extra step of frying some of the leaves, but it still tastes like something easily made at home. Flash-fried brussels sprouts also make an appearance, served with yogurt and honey, and they’re good but not too memorable. In fact, overall, “good but not too memorable” is how we’d describe most of the dishes here. A few items do stand out, like the mother of all crudite platters, which comes with seasonal accoutrements like eggplant agrodolce, various spreads, and naan (the accompaniments are tasty, but the size of this dish alone makes it interesting - it’s huge). And while there are meat and seafood options available (the burger is good), you get the sense they’re just there to round out the otherwise very vegetable-focused menu. The food at Clever Rabbit is perfectly good, and certainly dietary-restriction-friendly - it’s just a little boring. If you’re a Chicagoan who gravitates towards meat, this place won’t inspire you to give it up. And if you’re not a meat-lover, it still won’t blow you away, but you won’t leave angry. Food Rundown photo credit: Sandy Noto Crudite Platter If you’re here, you need to order this. It looks like a fcking garden landed on your table. photo credit: Sandy Noto Kale Salad This comes tossed with a lemon vinaigrette and peaches. It’s fine. Roasted Beets Served with blue cheese, almonds, and some greens. There aren’t enough greens to make it a salad, so it really just tastes like a plate of good, but boring, beets. photo credit: Sandy Noto Carrot Dumplings These are basically carrot pot stickers The slightly sweet, gingery sauce makes this one of the stronger dishes on the menu. photo credit: Sandy Noto Brussels Sprouts These brussels sprouts are roasted, fried, and served with yogurt, honey, and a little horseradish. It’s a tasty dish, but more yogurt and honey would make it better. photo credit: Sandy Noto Cauliflower This dish tastes like it’s missing something. The roasted cauliflower is underseasoned, and the puree (also made from cauliflower) is thin. photo credit: Sandy Noto Fat Rabbit Burger This is a solid burger - two juicy patties, Swiss cheese, mushrooms, and onions - and it reminds us of a patty melt. If you eat meat, this is what you should order." - Adrian Kane

"Owner Chris Haisma commands wine over at his vegetable-focused spot, Clever Rabbit, in Wicker Park. Most of the list here is comprised of organic or biodynamic selections, and he suggests trying California-based My Favorite Neighbor’s cabernet ($15/$125)." - Kat Odell

Went to the rabbit for brunch with 2 little kids. The place is not "kid friendly" because they don't have special kids menu. Now that doesn't really matter because the food is amazing and my kids both inhaled the French toast and the benedict. The service was great and we got seated right away in a corner booth. The fat rabbit burger was absolutely delish. Large wine selection and special drink menu. The beer menu was smaller but the quality was there. Didn't see any drafts at the bar.

Pretty nice place with good vegetarian options. Did not enjoy the football on TV, seemed out of place with the character of the restaurant (would give 5 out of 5 otherwise). The wait staff was great. One nice thing is the prices are discounted if you get a vegetarian version of a large plate which normally has meat; we got the brussel sprouts and replaced the brisket with truffles and the price was only a few dollars more!

Excellent place for a very nice meal. All the dishes had great flavor and the chicken schnitzel was done perfectly. Try the gnocchi, a beautiful smoky cheese makes it creamy and delish! Carrot cake was good but shills have been served room temp. Try a Julius, taste just like a creamsicle

My husband and I had dinner here last week on a Saturday evening and it was fantastic. It was restaurant week so we could only get a 5pm reservation. We were the first to be seated and quickly the place filled up. Regardless, our service throughout was great. We opted to order from the regular menu. We ordered 5 menu items, 2 glasses of wine and 3 fresh squeezed OJs. We had to box up about 1/3 of the food just to get through all of it. The total was right around $100. Such a value!! The atmosphere was cool and cozy at the same time. They spun actual vinyl records and the lighting was perfect! We'll be back again soon! My phone died before I could get more pictures :/

I’m not sure why I have not gone to this place earlier. The people, food, and atmosphere were all on point!! Our waiter Hector knew exactly to get off the menu for brunch! I would go back to Clever Rabbit all day!! They are also super kid friendly and the staff went above and beyond to make sure our kids were enjoying their time.

Premier Vegan-Friendly restaurant with a few very exciting and delicious vegan options! Food***** When I say “wow” I mean it. I went in here not expecting much after first glance of the menu and the limited vegan options but I found out many of the dishes can be made vegan and we were even treated to a new porridge dish they are releasing in fall—incredibly tasty and filling. We ordered the carrot dumplings (a MUST TRY), Dosa, Summer Squash Tacos, and raspberry sorbet. The flavors in the carrot dumplings and summer squash tacos we’re stunning. My tastebuds were in heaven! The Dosa was good but paled in comparison to the other dishes we were presented with! Service***** They knew it was my partner’s birthday because I had emailed the manager prior to see if I could set something up with them. The manager didn’t respond but when we got to the restaurant we were given two glasses of champagne, an additional entree, and dessert free of charge! Clever Rabbit gets 5 stars for their impeccable service! Atmoshphere**** Nice outside seating and indoor seating. We sat outside and the noise was minimal and atmosphere vibrant! Price$$$ Entrees are moderately to high priced and incredibly good—definitely worth the money.

We came to Clever Rabbit to watch the game because surrounding “sports bars” were packed. With one tv by the bar, it worked out to have nice food & drinks (for me) while watching sports (for my man). The charcuterie board, beet martini, carrot margarita, and squash tacos were all very delicious. It’s dark in here, boozy, and classy. Loved it. Thanks,

This place has been on my list for a while. I went there with two vegetations. Food was good service was great and loved the ambiance. Felt this was a bit pricey compared to similar restaurants that I've been to. I wouldn't mind going back there but might not be like on top of my list. Their dumplings and gnocchi were very good. Tart was good and Dosa was average.
