Cocina de Autor Los Cabos

"Located in the bougainvillea-strewn Grand Velas hotel, this plush oceanfront restaurant is sophisticated, amplified by the resort-formal dress code. The terrace is a nice spot for bites and cocktails, and a few choice tables overlook a koi pond. The multicourse tasting menu is Mexican at its heart, with global elements and inspirations woven throughout. This is a kitchen unafraid of taking risks, especially when it comes to flavor combinations. A farm-raised sea scallop served under a miso butter with tom yum and a tempura-fried shiso leaf is delicious. Then, in a triumph of flavors, beef tenderloin is plated with celery root purée, poached beets, and maitake mushrooms. Shaved Comté with a quenelle of honey ice cream is a playful take on the cheese course." - Michelin Inspector

We had the extreme pleasure of visiting Cocina de Autor last night for dinner. I cannot recommend it enough. Javier was our server and he was attentive and knowledgeable. Each dish on the tasting menu was one of the best dishes I’ve ever had in my life. And I’ve traveled the world and eaten at other Michelin star restaurants in this was my very favorite based on taste. It was very expensive, so I have some recommendations on how to make it more affordable. First, arrive on time and skip drinks at the bar. It’s a beautiful bar, but the drinks were not the same caliber as the food. We did one wine pairing, but the pours were small and not really enough to effectively share or to drink with the in-between courses, which did not have a pairing. And sadly, it was more expensive than ordering a single glass of each of the five wines paired with the dishes, which would’ve been a full pour. The wines were perfectly paired with the , and I highly recommend the paired wines, but next time I would order a full glass of each one and skip the “pairing“. Plus, there weren’t pairings for each course, which was a little disappointing and would’ve been nice to have more wine to drink with the courses in between. The dishes were incredible, and I would absolutely go back next trip. But, for men with a hardier appetite, know that you will probably leave hungry. The portions are extremely small. My husband had to eat when we got home. It was enough for me as a Female.

This was hands down one of the best meals I’ve ever had. My husband and I enjoy Michelin star restaurants and came to celebrate our anniversary. The food was absolutely delightful with unexpected flavors combinations that were perfectly balanced and beautifully presented. The service was great and the atmosphere was also lovely. Well deserving of their Michelin star and highly recommend going!

I visited this restaurant several years ago, and the experience was definitely memorable. The meal was creative, with dishes that thoughtfully incorporated elements of nature. The use of colors, textures, and flavors was interesting and well-executed. While the food was good, it didn’t quite reach the level of being exceptional or unforgettable. The service, however, was excellent, and the wine pairing was both knowledgeable and well-presented. Overall, it’s a unique experience worth trying, and I’d give it a solid four stars.

The Grand Velas is a beautiful hotel , perfect for a Michelin Star restaurant . The ambience , staff, and food were elegant. The wines were an uncovering for me and I appreciate the efforts to incorporate Mexican wines . Favorite bite was the ceviche with green Apple . Fault Findings worth mentioning : The coffee in the scallop dish was over powering the dish was too salty . Though tasty, maybe the truffle and coffee shouldn’t accompany a delicate scallop. The trend of corn based lattice incorporated with the bites and desserts was a tenuous link between culinary skill and creativity. Chef or staff were in the dining area plating and taking photos . It was distracting and unseemly. Hotel could not get a taxi after about 45 minutes of “in 10-15 minutes” , we called an Uber.

Cocina de Autor, nestled within the Grand Velas resort in San José del Cabo, isn't just a restaurant; it's an entire event. The restaurant itself is bold and metropolitan, with an artistic vibe that manages to be incredibly striking without feeling pretentious. You do not have to be a foodie or sommelier to enjoy a dinner here. I can't wait to go back! You're not just getting a meal—you're embarking on a culinary journey led by two-Michelin-star Head Chef Sidney Schutte from the Netherlands. Go with an open mind, it's not dinner, it's more like a Cirque du Soleil show—unexpected and utterly captivating. Hot Tip: while their drink menu is fantastic, I'd absolutely recommend going for the wine pairing. It just adds another layer to the tasting menu experience and there is a unique mix of red and white pairings of unique wines from around the world.

I live in San Francisco and am a fine dining foodie - have been to several Michelin restaurants all over the world. Food and service at Cocina de Aurora are very, very good. Really enjoyed all the dishes and cocktails. On par with other amazing restaurants around the world. It is very pricey, especially considering it’s Mexico. But the quality did not disappoint. Our meal was $800 USD with 20% tip (we drank a lot and got the 10 courses). The restaurant and ambiance are beautiful. It was our anniversary and they had a special dessert for us. I love chocolate and needed another bite, they immediately brought me more. Not sure what other reviewers were taking about service being off and flavors lacking — that was not our experience at all. We had a world class meal from start to finish.

Food was great but all was overshadowed when the waiter brought his mom over to scold our group for laughing too much. Hotel is great. Restaurant is trying too hard.

Yelp
Heard great things about this restaurant and it did not disappoint! It is an immersive experience and the food matches the experience. We were lucky to enjoy the bar and the first 2 dish there, and then moved out to the outside dining area (our chose) to finish the dinner. Each food items was very well presented and had something special about it. Overall the menu was great and there were about two items that were just amazing. The food here is awesome and hats off for the chef. The ambiance of the restaurant is elegant yet fun. The outside dinner table are near the Koi pond which is filled with beautiful koi fishes. At the same time, they had live music which was with a harp, another elegant feature of this restaurant. She was amazing and the view of the beach and ocean was just another outstanding experience. The servers here are very friendly and great at what they do. They add to the great atmosphere and experience. The servers are top tier in my book. I would highly recommend trying this place out, especially if you are staying at the resort which the restaurant resides in.

Yelp
Excellent meal that I will remember as one of the best ever. Every item on the 10 course tasting menu was beautifully presented and paired with a wonderfully compatible wine. There were so many delightful and complex flavors that I'd never before experienced and that I may never taste again. I can't even give you a favorite dish as they were all terrific. The ambiance is also quite elegant, and the service was outstanding.

Yelp
Signature restaurant at the Grand Velas Los Cabos. Usually 8-9 courses with dynamic and well thought out courses. Approximately an hour in a half service to two hours. Got to utilize the free child service at the resort. They provide children with dinner. Obviously not as good as what we had. Food was delicious but the service at each of the dinner restaurant are exceptional. The service brought the dinner to a whole new level.

Yelp
State of grand Bay loss for a week and had the opportunity to dine at this fabulous restaurant twice during the week. I stayed during Covid right before the restaurant shut down and it was just as amazing as I remember Started out walking in where they would be seated with a refreshing cocktail before dinner and a choice of sitting inside or outside my friend and I had her cucumber dill cocktails and then decided to sit outside as we had the opportunity to listen to the jazz music playing across the lily pond We have a 10 course meal designed by a Michelin chef paired with great wine some from the Guadalupe valley up in Ensenada which I just toured two weeks earlier. For an extra $110 could've upgraded to some Na wines but the Guadalupe did just fine

Yelp
Innovative cuisine in an elegant yet contemporary setting--this restaurant is a culinary adventure. First, we were greeted with a lively signature cocktail and a few small appetizers in the lounge. Next, we were ushered into the beautifully appointed dining room. We opted for the premium wine pairing to accompany our tasting menu and were not disappointed. With so many interesting courses, it was wonderful to know that the wine was always a thoughtfully chosen complement to each dish. Service was superb and each course was a feat of appetizing artistry.

Yelp
Spectacular dining experience. Each dish was beautiful and had flavors that were unique and amazing. The service was stellar and the beautiful setting on the koi pond with live music made the whole experience incredible. The chef came to talk near the end of the meal and we couldn't have been more impressed. A top 10 lifetime dinner for me.

Yelp
We stayed at Grand Velas and this one of the best dinner experiences I have ever had. First the decor of the restaurant is incredible. Service began when we first sat in their bar room for a cocktail and they brought out two amuse bouches. After we had enjoyed the first bites, they brought us into the main dining room. Service was incredibly warm, helpful, attentive but not overbearing. The waiters actually noticed after the first course that my brother was left handed and switched the fork and knife set down without him saying anything. Each dish was unique, inventive, and plated beautifully. One especially fun dish was the flaming mignon and the avocado shaped sorbet dessert. The chef actually came out to talk to us mid-way through the meal and then gave us a tour of the kitchen. Another highlight of our meal was the saxophone player. He played all the classics of the 80's and 90's and completed the perfect ambiance of Cocina de Autor.
