San Diego’s Best Brunch Restaurants | Eater San Diego

"For Oaxacan-style breakfasts with an Southern California twist, try one of Cocina de Barrio’s four locations across the county. Traditional dishes include huevos Oaxaqueños or scrambled eggs with nopales in a tomato recaudo, and tlayudas with chorizo (or soy chorizo) and queso Oaxaca. Diners can pair their dish with a popsicle margarita from the restaurant’s tequila and mezcal bar with their choice of popsicle flavor such as jamaica, tamarindo, and pomegranate cherry. Brunch is served daily from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and all day on Sundays." - Roxana Becerril

Oaxacan Restaurant and Tequila Bar Opening in Hillcrest - Eater San Diego

"Anticipated to open by the first week of November, Cocina de Barrio will replace the Hillcrest location of Swami’s Cafe. The 4,500-square-foot space, at the corner of 5th Avenue and Pennsylvania Avenue, has been shuttered since last month for a remodel. Swami’s owner Jaime Osuna is partnering with executive chef Jose Flores on the new restaurant. Flores, an 18-year veteran of the restaurant industry, is an alum of the California Culinary Academy. Though he’s cooked in several well-known Italian kitchens, including Civico 1845, Solare, and Via Italia, the chef tells Eater that he’s looking forward to working on a project that reflects his own heritage. Focusing on the cuisine of Oaxaca as well as other regions of Mexico, Cocina de Barrio’s menu will include hand-pressed corn tortillas and classic Oaxacan dishes ranging from a variety of mole to fried grasshoppers and tlayudas, slightly-crisp large tortillas spread with refried beans and various toppings. Starters will include prickly pear and lime-cured striped bass ceviche, salmon tiradito with pickled strawberry, red onion, and mint, and infladita de barbacoa, puffed blue corn tortillas topped with 10-hour braised beef barbacoa, aguacate salsa, and mole amarillo while entrees range from chamorro de borrego, a braised lamb shank, to a popular Nayarit seafood dish called pescado zarandeado. Desserts will feature homemade ice cream in flavors like Mexican hot chocolate, mole, corn and lime, and dulce de leche. Flores says that the restaurant will also offer brunch, as well as a 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. happy hour on the patio that will feature tacos and drink specials from the bar, which will pour a large selection of tequila, mezcal, Mexican craft beer, and wine from Baja." - Candice Woo

Enjoyed visiting this place for brunch with family from out of town. Dog friendly patio. Food presentation is lovely, unfortunately I found a hair in my dish. Everyone else in our party seemed pleased with their choices. Seems that with a little more love and attention to service and other details, this place could deliver higher. Still a good option and would not discourage anyone from visiting.

We got lucky, no wait. We got seated right away. We ordered coffee and a mimosa. Both delicious. Then we ordered a stack of pancakes and Huevos Rancheros. I found the place to be slightly loud. But we were still able to hold a conversation. It also took some time to get our food. It was a Sunday morning.

We ordered fish tacos and creme brulee and they were both delicious. The kid's chicken tenders and fries were not great. Our server was attentive when we told her we had to rush and got out dessert right away. The lemon rice and beans were also to die for. The spicy salsa that came with the fish tacos. FIRE. We wish we had the time to order some drinks..next time

It really feels like eating at home. Food was delicious and comforting. We had Taquitos Dorados, Sopa Azteca, Aguachile and Borrego. All was delicious. Our server was professional and friendly.

10/10. Perfect execution. These are the taquitos, quesadillas, and flan. They put down a sauce and warned me it was very spicy. I said ‘how spicy, I’m from Michigan.’ He immediately took the sauce back and brought back a bottle of Cholula. Bahahahah

We went for brunch on a Sunday and had a bit of a wait to sit but the food came quickly once we got our table. $22 for bottomless mimosas and huge portions on all of the meals. The omelette was cooked well and they also allowed us to order Birria tacos from the lunch menu. The sauce came on top for the tacos and it soaked through the tortillas pretty quickly so would have been great if the tortillas were doubled because they were pretty hard to eat. Great otherwise!

This was on our to-do list during our trip to SD, and it exceeded our expectations from start to finish, all thanks to our amazing server, Jose. My husband and I both had the chilaquiles verdes, which came with a side of salsa rojo—absolutely delicious! The tortillas stayed perfectly crispy, and each bite was bursting with flavor. I also tried the Café de Olla, and it was hands down the best I've ever had! We ended our meal with churros paired with their homemade dulce de leche ice cream. If you're in the SD area, this place is a must-visit!

I was visiting San Diego for my birthday and remembered that I had saved this restaurant after being suggested their TikTok’s from the owner’s daughter who also worked there several years ago. Came here for my birthday and it definitely matched expectations. We got mid day reservations at 3pm and it was not full. I ordered the jalapeño mezcal cocktail which was spicy and good. We ordered ceviche robalo and salmon de mole and both was absolutely delicious. My friend mentioned it was my bday and they brought us a large slide of tres leches cake.
