"Inside a welcoming, white stucco home where the walls are covered in local art, chef Miguel Bahena and chef Carolina Verdugo have embraced a “creative Baja California kitchen” approach to a menu that’s a breath of fresh air and where the cozy dining room is ideal for a quiet, romantic meal. Ceviche shakeado is a combo of yellow tail, and scallops in lime juice with chile serrano, chile chiltepín, and cactus mixed in a cocktail shaker, which adds effervescence to the spicy liquid. Meanwhile, camarones en costra de pepita, or pumpkin seed-crusted shrimp over a piquant shrimp chile atole (spicy porridge) salsa, looks to southern México for inspiration." - Bill Esparza

"Comfortable and amiable, Madre is from chefs and partners Miguel Bahena and Carolina Verdugo. Found in a white stucco home with a terra-cotta tiled roof, the dining area's layout features two small rooms and a bar area with the kitchen on display at the back. Decorative elements include polished wood plank floors, tables dressed in cloth runners and light walls accented with artwork. The concise menu offers seafood starters, such as the pepita and-sesame crusted shrimp plated with a chileatole sauce made from shrimp stock and slivers of nopal and onion. Pasta and roasted meats round out the menu, such as the duck breast presented with a crisped skin and sauced with a house-made mole coloradito." - Michelin Inspector

"After closing Pacifico, chefs Miguel Bahena and Carolina Verdugo evolved their kitchen from a purely Baja California approach to a menu based generally on northeastern Mexico. Plus, their cozy, new dining room feels like home. Ceviches with Persian cucumber and cherry tomatoes, tiraditos marinated in algaes and chile morita, and local oysters flavored by fire-roasted chiles satisfy the Ensenadan fundamentals. Meanwhile dry fideos (noodles) are topped with hearty beef head stew, and seasonal grilled vegetables evoke scenes of families gathered around smoky backyard grills in Chihuahua and Sonora — and, of course, Baja California. A wonderful experience. 2 of us had the 5 course dinner and 1 had the catch of the day. Food was excellent. Jonathon, our camarero, was knowledgeable and attentive.

Google
Must visit restaurant in Ensenada! Not only is this the best restaurant in Baja, it’s one of our favorites in the world! They’re famous for the fried octopus and it’s a must try. But the tuna tataki tostada is something I’ll dream of. Service is great and it has a lovely ambiance! Highly recommend!

Google
Small restaurant with amazing food! The duck, cooked with their special sauce, is a standout dish. A hidden gem—definitely a must-try when visiting Ensenada!

Google
Madre in Ensenada, Mexico, is amazing with such delicious food! The atmosphere is intimate, with beautiful design, friendly servers, and incredible dishes. We tried the fried octopus, grilled oysters, cevishake scallops, seafood pappardelle, yellow corn flan, and non-alcoholic mojito mint and rosemary lemonade. The only dish we liked slightly less was the crab potato croquettes, but they were still tasty. Just keep in mind that the food takes a while to arrive, but it’s worth the wait.

Loved every single detail of this place, the architecture, food, design, environment and the service! The server was amazing, she even let us in before the opening time! Coffee on point, eggs with chorizo on point and the chilaquiles had an amazing flavor! Feels like the whole vibe of Ensenada in one place! Looking forward to try the lunch menu but the brunch was amazing!

Yelp
I enjoyed my time here so much, the service was amazing, the food was all so delicious, ambiance was perfect, one of the best restaurants I ever went to, you definitely get your moneys worth out of this place! Much love to Madre!

Yelp
Great food and attentive servers! Their grilled oysters are my favorite- so succulent and delicious. The fried octopus is also a must try. It's tender and extremely flavorful! I love the intimate and Spanish vibes of the restaurant and it is an ideal spot to spend a lovely evening.

Yelp
There was about 15 of us in our party. We had reservations. The waiter seemed to not know the menu. We received several of our dishes super late. The place is cute inside, but don't think we would come back.

Yelp
Relaxing ambiance, great food, creative presentation and nice decor. We enjoyed the ceviche, tiradito and a pasta dish. Our waiter went above and beyond to make sure we understood the menu ingredients and he was always quick to clear our plates.

Yelp
Wow this spot was so good!!! is literally walking into a house with some interesting Mediterranean style, art and decoration! The food was fresh, they also do their homemade bread and pasta which adds more value to the freshness and quality in the food, is a seafood related spot so if you love seafood im sure you'll have a good time there. Also prices are so reasonable for the place which it looks like a fancy spot. Perfect to take someone for a date :) Este lugar está increíble!!!

Yelp
What a Gem, on a low key side street nestled into Ensenada's hustle and bustle is Madre. The restaurant is an old house that's been perfectly converted into an indoor-outdoor oasis that gives a relaxed but upscale vibe. It gets better, Chef Miguel is crushing it with his take on Baja Med - with handmade pastas and some of the freshest fish you'll find. We started with clean simple cocktails done perfectly and had the black scallop ceviche and the yellowtail sashimi - both super fresh and wonderful starters!! For entrees we had the fish of the day - done to perfection and the black ink seafood pasta - the hand rolled pasta and abundance of shrimp, clams and squid was appreciated...both dishes were amazing but the seafood pasta was a standout in my opinion. Plenty of options in the Ensenada area for seafood but what makes the dishes special to me is the light touch - the sauces let the seafood shine with just the right amount of sublime flavors added...really dig it. I would strongly recommend to anyone in Ensenada or even the Valle to visit Madre, you won't be disappointed. One final note, our server Priscilla was awesome as well, just the right blend of casual and upscale - with real, authentic guidance on questions about each dish, she's an absolute joya. It's a bit of a drive for us from La Mision but I see us making the trek many times to visit Madre in the future - it is that especial.

Yelp
We came here mid-week and enjoyed the patio. The service was excellent. The fresh salad is not to be missed! Also, the tomato pasta and hot pot went perfect. Followed up with flan, made for a special evening to remember.

Yelp
Our local friend recommended Madre and it was one of the best meals we've had in recent memory! Great vibe, service and the food ... it was unbelievable. We had oysters with chilli butter, a pork shank/ribs handmade gnocchi and seafood with squid ink handmade pasta. I can't describe how good it was. Absolutely outstanding. Also had a mini pie for dessert (even though we didn't need it). Thank you Madre team and thank you Tomiko from ES Concierge for the tip!

Yelp
What a gem of a restaurant! We ate there last night and had a great experience. In order of importance, first our server Vilma was really great. Friendly, attentive. She was made the experience so good. Second, the restaurant. An old converted house that had so much style. Loved the vibe. Good job whoever did the design. Lastly, the food. We had oyster starter and it was really good, salad and it was excellent, pasta with beef was really good and last my wife had the fish in banana leaf and she thought is was ok (not great). Overall Vilma and the restaurant itself are what made it a great experience. Oh and the house red helped too. Will be back

Yelp
Beautiful place with some ambiance but was extremely empty on a Saturday night. The front of the home (entrance) has some wood that needs to be redone as it is popping out and a trip hazard. Staff was really nice but unfortunately the trip was lackluster. The drinks are a big let down and even the sangria was watery? I guess they add some soda water but it barely had any wine flavor. A lot of the food there is unique. While it tasted good, the small portions were not for us. We were super hungry and ended up having a second dinner after. We had the quail with mole blanco, good flavor but tiny and a part of the quail was a bit chewy. Al though, I don't think that was their fault. My sister had the sopes with green sauce and octopus and chicharrón. Interesting combo but wasn't amazing. We also got a sample of their veggie soup. I imagine we received this because the food was taking so long to come out. It was really good and I wish we had gotten more of that. The aguachile oysters were really good. But, in a town full of cheaper seafood alternatives that are amazing I wouldn't say you have to get it. Our friend got a seafood soup with toast which I don't think he liked very much. He said the seafood was good but he was expecting something more like a hearty soup (think clam chowder). Also, the bread that accompanies the dish was smoked and he said it didn't taste good at all. And even thought the toast had a char to it the smokiness made the toast taste burnt even though it wasn't. Overall, kinda disappointing. I felt bad because it already looked really empty and the location and indoors is pretty. But other reviewers also mention the drinks not being very good. And the concepts are too unique and overpriced for then not the be executed well. For the price we were expecting to be wowed. Plenty of good options in Ensenada, but this place is a pass. They didn't have margaritas, which is just odd. Being that you are in Mexico. I think they need to reconsider many things. Thank you to the staff they were kind and accommodating.

Yelp
Stumbled in here and took out gorditas. Wow. Never imagined a Gordita this good. Cheese so fresh. I'll be back!

Brittney K.

Yelp
Amazing food, the house ceviche is to die for! We loved everything and while everyone was nice the service was a little slow. Would definitely come back and recommend

Yelp
Very cozy restaurant with fresh and well prepared food. We got the catch of the day with pickled vegetables wrapped in a banana leaf and the quail in mole with chopped beets. Both were excellent. We got a couple cocktails which weren't our favorite but the michelada was great! Staff was really attentive and nice. Would definitely come back.

Yelp
Food great! Service good but local restaurant tipe. The ambiance is fine old house conversion. But the food is worrh it! Just didn't get the feeling of an international restaurant eventhough the food has that level. !!

Yelp
10 out of 10! We've been here multiple times now, and the experience is consistently fantastic. This place deserves a great review and it's been long overdue. If you appreciate fresh, unique and well crafted Italian food, and a charming environment, and a romantic or intimate dining experience, this is the place for you. Every dish and drink is beautifully presented and thoughtfully prepared. And they even prepared drinks that included ingredients straight out of their garden. I appreciated the sustainability! ---- Recap: Even with COVID accommodations, we had a delightful time. We had the dinner menu each time we've gone. We had the Ceviche de la Casa to start (though our favorite is the Pulpo Frito -- a must try!) Beatifically presented. Light and fresh starter. For entrees we had Cavatelli and Tagliatelle. Incredibly delicious and highly recommended! Savory, delicious, and perfect amount. Not heavy and just the right amount of food. I wanted to have a mock-tail; they didn't have it listed on the menu, so the waitress offered to make me one based off my preferences! How amazing! I told her I wanted light and refreshing with a hint of citrus. She made the most delicious and refreshing lavender drink! Exceeded my expectations! And she prepared it off the top of her head. Lavender, slight hint of cucumber and guava and honey. It was spectacular and relaxing. I can't say enough how impressed I was. I also want to mention how consistently great this teams customer service is. Each time we've been here, they've always been so patient, sweet, and timely. Always checking in. This team has mastered it all! Keep doing what you are doing. We can't wait to try your brunch menu next time!

Yelp
If you like to waste your money by paying high prices for ridiculously small portions then look no further! This people think they are in Europe for the prices they charge and the pseudo-gourmet plates they offer. I don't mind paying higher prices if the food is good, which it kinda was, but ridiculously small portions. This place is a disfavor to the Ensenada restaurant scene. Don't be fooled by the hype!

Yelp
First of all, i consider myself a foodie, i eat from street vendors to fancy places that have dress codes as long as theres a correlation between quality of food and price. Was UBER disappointed in this restaurant. The only good thing that i can say was the waitress was excellent. I ordered a Negroni alcoholic veverage and ceviche tostadas to start off. I couldnt even finish the drink because it was horrid and as far as the ceviche it was utterly below average. The main course which was a filet of fish was quite tasty. My meal came out to $37, now i dont mind paying a bit more for upscale, but this just wasnt upscale in any way (except the waitress CS). Either the quality of food and drinks needs to go way up or the prices need to go way down, *sigh* i dont like leaving bad reviews but hopefully this review will steer people away from a horrible experience. Do yourself a favor, go to la gurrerense, or el guero you will eat amazing food for 1/4 the fraction of this place.

Yelp
I took my parents to this restaurant and we loved it. In fact, so much so, that we came back the next day. The food was so good and they have a good wine selection as well as mixed drinks. The service was great and we really liked how the restaurant was decorated. We ordered the fish tiradito, pulpo frito, a salad and a spinach pasta with bacon. Everything was great but our favorite was the pasta.

Karla A.

Yelp
I went for the first time today! And it was honestly the best place I've been! The food is amazing and specially the desert! Highly recommend the seafood pasta or any of there pasta! The staff is so friendly every single one of them! Had the best time!

Wendy S.

Yelp
Such a disappointment. From a cold impolite reception from a girl. The place was incredibly cold too, it's winter FGS, close the door and the windows! Then we still gave them a chance, but after a minute of searching their famous octopus at the menu, we found out that the menu has no octopus at all, besides it's incredibly short and pretentious. We decided to go out before having to overpay for a bad experience.

Kareen B.

Yelp
The food here is amazing! The flavors of each dish marry each other beautifully. I tried some unique dishes I have never tried before. Staff is also very friendly and the overall ambience is awesome. 10/10!

Arda K.

Yelp
Very unique dishes. One better than the other. This is a must to visit if you're in the area. Very friendly staff and great service.

Ivette V.

Yelp
What an amazing place. I'm a big fan already. The combination of fresh ingredients, simple yet complex servings and the nice people working there makes this place a true gem. You feel welcomed and embraced by the food and the ambiance. Nothing pretentious yet so much quality. I have my usual spots on rotation when I come visit family in Ensenada and this just became one of them. Worth making a trip for.

PV V.

Yelp
Nice restaurant! Good food, good ambience...We'll be back... only recommendation is to have more options of drinks...
