The Best Doughnut Shops in Portland, Oregon | Eater Portland

"This Portland-based doughnut chain uses a family recipe for its dough, which gives its raised rings a nice springiness to pair with the shop’s house-roasted coffee. Coco’s assortment of mochi doughnuts, with rotating flavors like Oreo and matcha, serve as a nice juxtaposition to any of the heartier, chocolate-coated variations." - Rebecca Roland

I go here all the time and I went this morning. The service was not good at all!! I have never experienced this!! I ordered 1 donut at a time and the guy behind the counter kept stuffing them in this little ass bag!! I am a person who does not like my food to touch some ppl get it and some don’t and that is okay. I am usually asked how many will I be purchasing but nothing and I left no tip which is very unusual for me. That is why I gave 4 stars! Not sure if I am going back to that location on N Skidmore where I used to live right next door in the 80’ and 90’s! The neighborhood sure has changed.

I ordered 130$ worth of coffee and donuts (2 carafes; 1 dozen deluxe and 1 dozen regular) on Friday to be ready for Tuesday at 730a. I walked in at 732a and there is a customer that is also grabbing 2 carafes of coffee. They’re almost done. I’m told I’ll have to wait because mine aren’t ready yet. They haven’t even been started. It’s 740 and there’s only one person working. After waiting ten more minutes, the customer ahead of me thanks the person behind the counter as they leave and says “next time I’ll have to make an order!” So… was that my coffee? I didn’t walk out of Coco Donuts until 825. What in the world is the point of making an order ahead of time to be ready for pick up only to wait an hour for it? Barely a “sorry for the wait”, and no other explanation. Also received the smallest pittance of creamer and oat milk for 2-96oz carafes. I’m wildly disappointed in the entire experience.

This used to be one of my favorite little treats, but over the last few years they really seem to have stopped trying. Donuts are no longer made on site, selection has been cut way back, and they’re frequently sold out of everything but the most basic offerings, even early on a quiet morning.

Google
Delicious and wonderful variety. Got an assortment of different donuts and wasn’t disappointed in one. Everything was soft, fresh and free of the awful taste you’d get at larger chains.

Google
The mochi donuts have a great texture that I've never experienced in a doughnut before but I found the flavor to be slightly more delicate than I would prefer. The yeasted doughnuts are incredible! If you can get them fresh they are as good as any other doughnut I've ever had! Newest visit- Chocolate glazed donut- Just a solid donut. No frills. The chocolate is pretty standard. Really good but not quite great. Glazed old fashioned- Nice exterior with a moist interior. Citrus finish. I thought lemon,Whitney said lime. Best thing we got. Donut holes- pretty standard. Really good but not earth shatteringly good. Almost leaves a waxy like feeling in my mouth.

Google
Classic donuts done right with high quality specialty coffee. In Portland, that combination only exists here. You can taste the quality of ingredients and preparation in every bite. The buttermilk bar is like no other. They have some less traditional flavors on their mochi donuts which are also amazing. Coco donuts is a unicorn donut & coffee shop.

02/17/17: Still have the best recipe for great doughnuts in Portland! 09/13/16: Still the best choice in PDX! 04/22/16: Let's be honest...it's HAND-CRAFTED DOUGHNUTS! Quality over quantity is what Coco Donuts is about and it shows in their doughnuts. So try it once for yourself and decide for yourself. Just get in early. They tend to sell out fast. 08/22/15: They are great at what they do. Definitely has my attention to keep going back for more.

Went here today for the first time and will definitely be coming back! The space is very large so social distancing is not an issue and there is outside seating if you want to enjoy your coffee and donuts straight away. They’re in a great location- right on broadway so quite central but with lots street parking available in the neighborhood behind the store. There was a great assortment of Classic donuts, we went with a maple buttercream, chocolate glazed with coconut flakes, and a sugar coated raised donut. They were great, as was our coffee. As someone with a variety of allergies and intolerances, I was both thrilled and relieved to see that I was still able to partake in their fine selection of artisanal donuts. The person at the counter was friendly and very understanding of the fact that my dog was barking outside (she has separation anxiety and occasionally gets upset being tied up, after a few barks I went and stood with her to stop this), the cafe was warm and smelt great, and a steady flow of people coming through the doors made this place feel like a local favourite. There’s also lots of places to tie your dog up outside. UPDATE JUNE 2021: We’ve lived in the neighbourhood for a few months now and Coco’s has become our go to donut shop, honestly this may be the best donut store in town. They just make great donuts without any fanfare, simple and tasty. The staff are friendly and helpful, and the store is always clean and smelling amazing.

Yelp
So So GOOD! We got a variety so we could try each one. The strawberry mochi was so unique we loved the chewy texture. Classic buttermilk was a like cake, a cross between an old fashion and a classic donut, it just melted in your mouth. And speaking of the classic, the classic glaze was super fluffy and light, exactly what you want. 10/10 We loved every one.

Yelp
Mochi donut might be my new thing, I think. So my friend and I randomly stumbled upon this stop and decided to give them a try (shes a don't girlie, I'm not). Surprisingly a little costly from what I pay for donuts on the regular
google avatar

Kalani B.

Yelp
Friendly quick service. Ordered a large hot mocha, matcha mochi donut and a maple old fashion donut. Everything tasted great! They have seating area with soft music playing in the background.

Yelp
Super cute shop! I live in Vancouver but was downtown Portland today to go to the apple store. On my way back to the car I passed by this shop and said to myself that I should be spontaneous and try it! I got 2 donuts, a lavender and a sprinkled chocolate, and a lavender iced latte for $10. All were pretty good, but I do wish the latte tasted more of lavender! I didn't really taste anything other than the coffee. But thats just how it is most places, I suppose I could have asked for more pumps of syrup. The worker I encountered today was extremely kind and we made great conversation!

Yelp
I love Coco. I had the strawberry crunch. It was unsurprisingly awesome. My friend and I stopped in for a Sat donut and coffee and it was a terrific way to start the ole weekend. Cocos always have a great ambiance with a modern design and I like this location with the throwback stadium box seats.

Yelp
Best donut I have ever had in my entire life buttermilk glazed is the best donut in the world from them got to check it out

Yelp
I love the idea of Mochi donuts. Unfortunately they only carry so many and then sell out. They had 1 of the Mochi left when we got there at about 11:30am. So we grabbed it along with the Raspberry filled one. I like Mochi and these tasted like a fried mochi churro. Yum. Guy at the counter wasn't sure what they were fried in or any other details but that was ok. Definitely get here early in the morning if you want to try these out.

Sadiki S.

Yelp
Went to the Portland State location today and the woman working (abby?) gave incredible customer service.

Mike L.

Yelp
All the selections are fresh and super good, but for something different, try the Lavender - it is a favorite.

David A.

Yelp
Spent a lot of money for three very bland/mediocre donuts that were not worth the money. I'd stick with Voodoo or Blue Star Donuts for the price point.

Yelp
Love Coco Donuts! I have only visited a couple times when I'm in the area, but definitely hit it up on Donut Day! Down off of Broadway and right next to Hale Pele, such a cute little shop, with delicious donuts! I enjoyed the lavender cake donut, and a cinnamon sugar glazed donut - suggested by the gal, and in the end was my husband favorite! Super good and yummy. The lavender was a cake donut, nice and dense, and the cinnamon sugar donut was light and fluffy. They also have espresso and coffee drinks, bags of coffee and other merch for sale. There was a line the whole time I was there, and I think multiple people were buying a half - full dozen of donuts, No judgment here! I've read other reviews and have not experienced any downsides yet. Staff was nice and very helpful. Highly recommend!

Yelp
My Japanese husband loved the Japanese style Pon de Ring donut ポンデリング, popular in his native Japan. I am not huge donut fan but this puff with tender chewy inside and crispy exterior is nothing like your traditional "donut" as you know it. Their playful shape and colorful glazes make them perfect for a birthday or a celebration. We will be back for more!
google avatar

Andrew A.

Yelp
I didn't know Valentines Day was such a big day for donuts: their inventory was almost wiped out by 9:15 a.m. I know it's a business, but a few people buying multiple dozens so that a bunch of other people are unable to buy any might not be the best business practice. I watched eager customer after customer enter and then turn around quickly disappointed.

Yelp
Very nice shop. Clean, roomy, easy to see all that you need to see. The donuts were good, bordering on great even. The cake donuts were light and wanted to melt in your mouth. The raised donuts did melt in your mouth and the chocolate icing had a nice flavor to it. The strawberry mochi was a mini cruller look alike but so much better. It was dense not airy and had a chewy texture that was different but very satisfying. 2 strikes against it in my book, were a very limited selection at 9:15ish, and no maple bar. Maple bars being the standard I judge all donut shops by. Though I doubt this will knock off any of my favorites that are on my mental list, I'm sure I'll be back.(earlier than today).

Yelp
While Blue Star and Voodoo get all the hype in (and out of) Portland, imho, Coco has the best tasting doughnuts by far. Doughnuts are already sweet enough, I don't need crushed cereal or tang or loads of other toppings piled on top! Just give me a stellar tasting cake doughnut or glazed. Better yet, a vanilla cream filled with chocolate icing, definitely my fave at Coco and the first that run out. So if you want the cream filled, get there early, before 9:30! The staff is always friendly, the coffee piping hot, and the shop is clean. All additional pluses. The only downside is that if you don't get there early, the selection is slim. But all the doughnuts that are available are fresh. Give this doughnut shop a try the next time you are picking up a dozen for a meeting, for brunch, or you are craving a doughnut for yourself. You won't be disappointed!

Yelp
This review is for their mochi donuts, specifically the grey sesame flavored one! It is a perfect combo of sweet dough and savory sesame with an interesting fluffy yet chewy texture! I'm not a fan of regular donuts so this is an awesome alternative!!
google avatar

Jay S.

Yelp
I tried mochi donut with blue icing and also glaze butter milk, mochi donut was made from rice flour, more chewing texture than the buttermilk, they are both good just different. I still do like the buttermilk or regular donut better.

Yelp
I feel a little silly rating a place over one item. But you know 1/1 is still batting 1.000. I've been skeptical of Portland donuts lately. I love the free ones with the chai flight for my birthday but I've been left a shade of disappointed by a more popular stellar brand. Don't even get me started on the pink boxes. So I asked the counter person what to get. She suggested the "creme" donut. It might have been "crumb" but I've had a bit of a cold lately. This donut basically tastes like creme brûlée in donut form. Even better without the messy cream in the middle. I don't even know what the crumble was on the top but it was delicious. The donut was also super fresh. It's very possible that these donuts don't age well. But I live in the suburbs and probably won't be passing by soon. So I don't care. My only complaint was the register had literally no bill change. How is this even attainable.

Yelp
Best donuts in town! Fresh, tasty and did an amazing job on both the traditional donuts and the unique Mochi donuts. We could not choose a specific kind so we had to try all of them. Treat yourself! We got the sesame, matcha, sugar and chocolate Mochi donuts and let me tell you they had the perfect texture and taste, and just the right size. Officially addicted. And if you're more of a traditional donut type person, they've got you covered too. You can always tell by the quality of a donut shop based on the simple glazed. I loved the glazed and my husband likes the old fashioned glaze. (sorry not so sorry Blue Star & Voodoo, but I don't need the gimmicks to have quality donuts). Coco donuts is the place to get your donut cravings fixed. Can't wait to order again and the customer service was great! They were super friendly.

Yelp
So, not to over expose a great little neighborhood donut shop, but do yourself and your mouth a favor and GO HERE! Amazing donuts - every kind we tried was the top of its game - and drinks. The staff was beyond kind. The shop itself was clean and spacious. Really, treat yourself and try this place at least once!
google avatar

Kitty C.

Yelp
Went to a wedding that had them cater and tried all the kinds they had. Each was pretty light and airy. Not too dense. Good ratio of icing to donut. Not too crumbly. I was excited to try their mochi as I've had mochi donuts before at another shop. Was kinda sad that their mochi donut didn't have that slight chewiness that mochi gives. They tasted almost the same as their other donuts. Still looking for the best mochi donut shop, but their regular donuts are good

Yelp
Lavender donut for the win! Delicious! The oldest boy loved the Mochi Macha donut. Fun selections and nice staff. On our tour of Portland's donut shops

Yelp
Now that they carry mochi donuts and sesame balls, I'm all in. I'd recommend it if you need to bring some into your workplace.

Yelp
I don't think Coco Donuts needs my business. Made a special trip there Saturday (noon-ish) to get a dozen for my husband's birthday and when we walked in there was maybe 11 donuts to choose from. IDK, maybe there was a fresh batch in the back, so I ask the counter girl if this is all they have and she curtly replies "yep." Not feeling very welcome and really disappointed about the lack of donuts we head for the door and she (sarcastically?) says "have a nice day." I said to my daughter "I don't think she really meant that." FYI - I'm not a jerk. I'm very friendly. I don't give off a stinky vibe but I don't seem inauthentic either. Any service job is difficult and maybe this gal just found out her Mom, who looks just as hot and sexy as me, cheated on her dad, who knows.

Yelp
Maple bacon donut and a latte ran around 7$ super soft and fluffy donut, crispy savory cuts of bacon with a singe of burnt ends and paired with a sweet maple glaze.

Brian R.

Yelp
Stopped in there on a Saturday morning at 9:00. Bought three Bavarian cream donuts. $9.00. Said donuts where day old. Not fluffy like a fresh don't. Could of stopped at 7/11 and got a better don't for half the cost. Won't be back.

Young H.

Yelp
Good. Light. Airy. Old fashion donuts. Don't know if it would have had more donut offerings but there was a sign which read something about being short staffed. Too bad. Ordered chocolate bavarian, twisted glaze, and chocolate plain. All good. Admittedly I came here because 2 other donut places were closed due to vacation: delicious donuts and queen donuts. I've tried delicious donuts and it's on par with this place. Have yet to try queen donuts. Give this place a try if you want old fashion donuts. Nothing fancy. But good.

Sean O.

Yelp
If you put a Coco donut and a day-old supermarket donut in front of me, I wouldn't be able to tell the difference. Went here once, found the donuts to be a bit dry and lacking in flavor. Won't be back.
google avatar

Jim M.

Yelp
Very disappointed in the service. Ordered a dozen the night before. When I arrived at 8am the next morning the store did not have my order ready, no record of it. But I prepaid with a credit card the night before and showed proof. So I will NEVER go back. The store could have given me a free doughnut for the confusion. It was not my fault that the website took my credit card and never told the store to package up the doughnuts. Not convenient. Product is nothing to rave about.

Yelp
Came here on a recommendation from a tour guide (after prying knowledge on where to go that wasn't a common mass chain). The hot pink lined and black exterior was easy to spot a few steps from the downtown square. Inside was a nice minimalistic interior with a display showcasing their baked goods. Panels line the walls horizontally to provide standing tables for anyone wanting to eat their goods in-shop. Plants stood in planters on the tables and walls, and dim lighting makes the inside a relaxing place to get away from the noise that is steps away. Note: there were no tables or seats at the time of visit. The sole person on staff was informative, but less-than enthused when asked anything relating to the menu. Now, there was just my party at time of order, and we just wanted to know what puts them apart. After all, there are plenty of donut places dotting Portland. We got a recommendation for a lavender infused item, as that's what they are known for. So, we went for the lavender hot chocolate and an apple fritter. The fritter was fine, but nothing to really make it stand out. However, the hot chocolate was simply delightful. It had just enough lavender infused into to taste quite well and not overpower. It was akin to chocolate just with the slightest hint of the floral flavor. It was a fine stop and definitely one of the better donut options for those that prefer a more stylish crafty donut.

Yelp
Wowza these doughnuts. Walked in at 9:30am this morning to pick up a couple jellies for Chanukah and was overwhelmed with the smell of delicious, freshly made doughnuts. We saw the last two jellies and snatched them up, as well as the lavender and plain glazed. The dough on these doughnuts might be the best in the city. So light, so flavorful! The glaze on the doughnuts is also great but I'm not entirely convinced it's needed. As such, while I LOVED all three doughnuts, the plain glazed was my personal favorite. The shop itself is super cute, with great places to sit and eat. The woman behind the counter was friendly. We did take our doughnuts to go, and they came in a cute pink box. Think of this place as a warmer, tastier, yummier-smelling, and cheaper Blue Star. High quality doughnuts without the pretense.
google avatar

Kal C.

Yelp
I'm on a "don't eat sugary crap" diet (most of the time), but my co-workers often ask me to grab them something on my way to the office. In return, they get me a diet soda or do me a favor. One day, every single female at work mentioned wanting donuts. There's something in the water. None of them knew about Coco, so I had to pick some up. I cannot resist Coco donuts. They're mostly basic donuts, but they're so fresh and perfect. Reasonably priced, no weird flavors, super clean location, friendly staff. I can't complain. I'm just glad it's not VooDoo, and the patrons inside had all taken a shower recently.
google avatar

Rob G.

Yelp
Terrible. Stopped in because Delicious Donuts was closed (happy birthday Raiden.) Terrible, uninterested service. Terrible, overly sweet donuts. Save your money for Delicious Donuts, they're flawless.
google avatar

Yelp
Hey, I just met you And this is loco But I love donuts So, bring me Coco I'm loco for Coco's sweet lavender donuts! So, pick some up and meet me ... anywhere. #Loco4Coco Sure, Fergalicious definition make them boys go loco, but so do donuts ... fresh, sweet, lavender doughnuts. They're my treasure, so I get donut pleasures from mi Coco. Vato Coco!!

Sha J.

Yelp
One of my favorite donut spots in Portland, as a kripsy Kreme fan these are an elevated version, and I LOVE their mochi donut! A very different style from others I've seen around town with a pillowy chew:) only downside is they sell out really fast
google avatar

Gabriel C.

Yelp
So I was in Portland and decided to walk all of Broadway, you know doing the TOURIST THING.. I am starving, I want something small but not to pricey.. yep.. No one is here.. lots of space, I'm stopping here!!! I buy some doughnuts!! WHERE IS EVERYONE? LOTS OF CHILL SPACE and NO ONE AROUND.. and THESE DOUGHNUTS ARE YUM! If I'm in Portland I'll stop again!

Randall T.

Yelp
We always choose Coco Donuts for our to-go orders. The prices are reasonable and the donuts are very tasty. Be sure to order early because they will have the best selection.
google avatar

Rob C.

Yelp
Simply fantastic, and by that I mean they make a straight forward classic donut extremely well!
google avatar

Lisa k.

Yelp
What I like about their donuts are that they are not overly sweet. What I don't like is that they are pretty standard, typical donuts. No new interesting flavors or anything. Maybe that's your thing and that's ok. I think I've been spoiled by other donut places. I've been in a couple times and nothing ever really catches my fancy. I'll leave with something and enjoy it on my walk back to work but I'm never like, "MMmmmmMM!". It's more like, "Meh, not bad. Hits the sugar spot". Plus, they are pricey for what you get. A solid 3-stars for the donuts but a deduction due to the grumpy and short (short as in curt, not height) employee. I didn't ask anything particularly stupid but the flat unfriendly answer really pissed me off. I get it, probably sick of the same questions. Perhaps some effing signs on the donuts so you don't have the same questions. I then go to ring up my donut, and told to stick card in machine, and she just walks away. No "thank you", no "have a good day", just the fresh cup of usual BS Portland craptastic customer service. Wasn't even throwing attitude back so completely unwarranted. Won't be back.
google avatar

Mateo R.

Yelp
I crave these donuts! Get there early so you can get them while they are hot and delicious. They are so soft and just melt in your mouth. Not to mention they also have some really wonderful coffee beverages as well.
google avatar

Caitlin W.

Yelp
I have been making my way around Portland's donut scene and next up was coco donuts. There is a couple locations around Portland but I have hit this one up twice. The staff is super friendly and welcoming. But, long story short the donuts are generic and run of the mill. Don't get me wrong the donuts are tasty but compared to the other places they don't compare. Simple choices: old fashioned, sprinkle, maple bars, cream filled, jelly filled, frosted etc. The donuts are cheap $1-$2. I had the cinnamon mocha latte, it tasted more like milk and less like coffee. I also wish there was more cinnamon flavor. I love that they put a small donut hole on the top of each hot beverage. It's such a nice simple touch. If you like the classics, this place is for you. (Their classics are good) If you like crazy concoctions, this place is not for you.
google avatar

Mariko K.

Yelp
I tried the lavender glazed, maple old-fashioned, lemon jelly-filled, and buttermilk donuts, as well as the lavender latte. I loooovvved the lavender latte. It was perfectly creamy and lightly lavender flavored. The latte came with a donut hole--the best I've ever had! It was like a glazed butter roll, fluffy and sweet. I also loooovvveed the old-fashioned and buttermilk donuts (which are my two favorite types of donuts). They had the perfect ratio of dough to glaze and were the perfect amount of sweetness for my taste. I was disappointed that I couldn't taste the lavender in the lavender glazed. The jelly-filled was fine (my least favorite type of donut). Service was just ok.

Jasmin V.

Yelp
We stopped in to get some coffee, but we tried a few of their donut options (maple bar, cinnamon sugar twist, lemon jelly filled), and they were the best donuts I've ever had. The donuts were super soft and not overly sweet. The sea salt caramel latte was perfect!

Yelp
Coco hype. It does not live up to its commercialism. I wonder what happened to this place. The donut selection seems to be less and less available. I came earlier and earlier and the variety was limited. What kept me coming back? I wanted to give them a fair shake. The first time I was here. The counter display was full of a large variety and so many I almost couldn't choose. The coffee was fresh and seemed to be always be made as there was a slight but moving line. Then the second and third visit. Less and less variety. Less and less selection. Now the coffee was being put in a pump carafe. It was a yeah serve yourself attitude now. Rather than a let me make and get that to you. The fourth visit was even more disappointing. Two varieties and maybe 6 donuts total to choose from. The coffee now was not made. Not in a pump carafe. I ordered it and got the attitude of why are you bothering me? Still, I wanted to believe this was an off day. I asked. What is happening here? The state has banned the type of oil they are allowed to cook the donuts in. It had something to do with the oil being rancid in California and then nobody was allowed to use it Nationwide. I googled it and sure enough. Trans Fat has been banned by the FDA and the slow ban has finally come to fruition. Well, taste has disappeared. These donuts lacked some serious flavor. It was like a piece of bread that was perfectly toasted and sprinkled with Cinamon and sugar but there was no butter on it. So, it was dry. The richness was gone. It was just dough. With icing and sprinkles and jelly. The boom was gone. I hope Coco and others can recover from this FDA ban. Maybe it will be a period of adjustment till they get it right or find a way to bring back the flavor. For now, I wouldn't even stop in for the coffee. It reminds me of when they tried to say New Coke is just as good as old coke. People actually stockpiled old coke and sold it to the highest bidder. This was before the internet was really in existence. That is how bad people missed the old. I miss the old Coco. The original Coco.

Yelp
Best donut shop in Portland !! Light, fluffy, tasty !! I've tasted donuts from many places and this by far is the best .
google avatar

Karl A.

Yelp
Donuts and coffee are both great! When I worked downtown, I liked going to their shop on SW 6th Ave, but recently I've gone to their shop on SE Milwaukie, and the glazed donuts are as good as ever. Lattes are good too.

RealTalk C.

Yelp
The good thing is that Coco donuts makes wheat alternative donuts, mochi. There's usually just three flavors to choose from but they are nice option from the usual offerings that most donut shops have. What is odd and interesting is that, while they close at 2:00 p.m., (at least some locations) seem to have a system where they deliberately let themselves run out of inventory hours in advance. So if you were so inclined to arrive at 1:30, you may walk away with just a coffee and a pack of sugar. Not sure if it's a plot for the folks to go home early or a fear of "day olds". Still good donuts though.

Yelp
I am forever ruined. After having these donuts, nothing else compares. It's clear you are eating donuts made by people who love donuts. I find myself making excuses for why we need donuts. Well done!

Craftycoco82 R.

Yelp
Made it in later in the morning(didn't get to try something new), but the old fashioned and donut holes did not disappoint!
