Yelp
Vietnamese virgin here when it comes to food, not nails. This place is located on Lawrence across the street from the Shell gas station. I never noticed this place before, probably because I am usually speeding to beat the red light.
I discovered this place purely by accident on Yelp while looking for somebody to deliver me spring rolls because I did not want to drive anywhere. Because I knew no one was going to even think about delivering 1-2 orders of spring rolls, I decided to walk over to Co Co because they had spring rolls.
Full disclosure here...while I live close to New Chinatown, when think Asian food, I don't think sandwiches. I think yummy steam Cha siu bao buns with succulent BBQ pork.
Since this was my first time in a Vietnamese sandwich and pho (no idea what pho is) shop, I decided to try a sandwich in addition to the egg rolls. I got the grilled pork sandwich but saw Co Co Special. They had me at ham, pate & pork roll...the holy trinity of good swine eating. Because I was going to be in a work meeting where the lunch being served was not something I was going to want, I got a Grilled Pork Vermicelli bowl to take in the next day.
First let's talk sandwiches....this is the first time I have gotten take out sandwiches that were sealed with rubber bands (cute). Both sandwiches were very fresh tasting. The mixture of veggies on each once were explosive with flavor. I didn't even put any salt on them. There were fresh sliced jalapenos on them; I took those off right away. The grilled pork was good, but the Co Co Special was very good. But to be fair, it had three kinds of pork and I love swine. The ham, pate & pork roll was a great blend of flavors.
The bread was softish, even though it had been slightly toasted. Next time I will ask for them not to toast the bread as I am not a fan of toast sub bread. As large as the sandwiches are, they are amazingly light. While tasty, it felt like I had not really eaten anything...I was satisfied but didn't feel overstuffed. I can totally see this as something you would have if you want to have a light snack during the day before heading out later in the evening to a big meal.
The Grilled Pork Vermicelli bowl made for an excellent lunch the next day. It came with an egg roll and a container of a sweet sauce. Due to the size, I was not sure if it was for one egg roll, so I poured it over the noodles. Not sure if it messed with the aesthetics of the dish, but I added some Tajin as well. Pretty good dish.
The egg rolls were solid and I could do them again easily. They were not greasy, the wrapping was flaky and the filling was nice.
Went back again with the Heiress Apparent and she got the Well-Done Brisket Noodle soup. The entree came in separate containers. Fair warning, you will need a big bowl to mix everything if you do take out. The broth, meat/noodles, veggies and onions were all in their own separate containers, ready to be mixed together. La J said it was excellent. I will take her word for it because I didn't taste it as she put in something that was red, and I imagine, very hot since she like hot food. La J's review of the pho: There was a hint of sweetness in the soup, as others have said. But, I like a bit of sweetness in my soups. This one came with two types of sauces I could pour into the soup. And those sauces were spicy. The sweetness that was already there really added flavor to the spice, so it didn't feel like I was just eating something hot and not tasting anything. Sometimes, there are soups that are too spicy, and you can't taste much. Adding the sweetness with the spicy creates flavor and allows the other flavors to come forth instead of being blocked out.
Service was nice and the wait for our order wasn't long. The staff was very nice too. Not a bad experience for my first foray into the land of V food.
