Where to Find the Best Hot Chocolate in NYC | Eater NY

"Tucked on the sixth floor of an anonymous office building near Union Square is one of the purest–and reasonably priced–cups of dark hot chocolate in the city. Cocoa Store, a high-end chocolate retailer and importer, is run by Pepi Di Giacomo, who prepares a limited batch of her 70 percent dark chocolate drink on a daily basis. With one of the highest ratios of chocolate to milk, Cacao Store’s drink is also one of the most chocolaty. Stop by for a cup and explore the expansive range of bean-to-bar chocolate offerings and bonbons by one of the most expert chocolatiers in the city." - John Tsung

A cute chocolate shop hidden on the sixth floor. There’s a great selection of chocolate bars and the staff who welcomed us was super lovely and accommodating. Unfortunately the second time we went, we met the owner who was quite rude for no reason, so my impression of the store was a little ruined. I’d still recommend going and hopefully you’ll catch the staff. The bonbons aren’t that great but the chocolate bars are unique and delicious.

Best chocolate shop ever. Annie was the best. I tried so many. Truly a Chocolate lovers dream. Unlike those boutique stores, this place let's you try many, this way you buy the bar that matches your taste buds perfectly. I needed specific bars for luxury ice cream. Annie was perfectly knowledgeable and found me some of the best options like Sierra Nevada De Santa Marta. Truly a fruity and caramely chocolate.

I really like this place and would absolutely return! It's a hidden gem, but getting up to the sixth floor is totally worth it, in my opinion, to witness and sample an incredible chocolate collection. I seek out 100% chocolate bars and The Cocoa Store has one of the best collections I've seen so far. The staff was incredibly welcoming and willing to sample anything. I left with several chocolate bars and the interest in going back for more!

Excellent selection! Great for gifts. We bought a bunch of individual flavored chocolates and the store worker labeled them for our custom box. Then we had a private chocolate tasting and bought a few bars. Very good quality chocolates from all around the world.

I randomly found this store by chance and am so glad I did! The chocolate selection is incredible, with options and flavors from all around the world. The service is also incredibly genuine and personalized. Genevieve is so sweet and kind! I left with so many exciting chocolates to try. Can’t wait to come back or do a chocolate tasting in the future.

I rang the bell to this shop thinking I would just pop in and buy a few pieces. Little did I know what awaited me on the 6th floor. A magnificent enchanting gallery of exquisite chocolates from around the world! I was flabbergasted! I often visit chocolatiers in New York and during my travels but this is next level chocolate love 💜 Alexandra who kindly met us outside lead us through a mysterious hallway which opened into a gorgeous sunlit loft, beautifully decorated with chocolate combinations and companies I had yet to discover. Alex is a chocolate expert and offered us a detailed history on the origins and makers of some of the chocolates whilst simultaneously tasting them. This makes all the difference- using taste, touch, smell, and hearing to learn about a product. A fantastic experience. I learnt that theres not simply a specialization in dark chocolate anymore but chocolatiers are now having fun with milk chocolate and white chocolate too! Indeed there are now degrees of darkness within milk chocolate too… fascinating! It was difficult to choose but this is also an exciting new adventure because I will return to learn more and refine my palette. My chocolate was even packed with an ice pack because it was 90 degrees out. How considerate 🍫 What a wonderful gem of a shop! This is why I LOVE New York. Stepping back out onto the summer streets, my visit didn’t feel real. It was like stepping out of a fantasy tale, a secret place that only a few are privy too 🥰💜

Google
This is the only place I've been able to find Puchero chocolate! I once bought this chocolate in Spain, lost the bag and never found it again. After years of search, I found Cocoa Store to have it! I'm so glad they carry this chocolate and more! Tasted exactly how I remember years ago. Cannot recommend this place enough

Google
Most of the chocolate I ordered from the website tasted burnt. :( Only one bar from the sampler packet tasted good. The rest came out very burnt. I tried contacting the shop owners but, I have not heard from anyone so far. Update: My 2nd attempt (because you always follow the rule of 3 for reviews) The 2nd attempt all the bars tasted wonderful. No burnt this time. Will order a 3rd patch in the future. ^^

Yelp
A store designed and intended for serious chocolate lovers (if you are, then up this review by one star). Many options for chocolate bars and some other chocolate confections. They offer purchase of cups of hot chocolate while you browse. Although comfortable, it is not a place to relax and chat with your companions. The staff are friendly and open to questions.

Yelp
Very cute chocolatier with an expansive selection of high end chocolates from around the world! They're located on the 6th floor so you'll need to be buzzed in. The space itself is pretty big - they have sections of bon bons, chocolate bars, chocolate covered goods, hot chocolate mixes, and more. I tried their bon bons (calamansi and passion fruit), which were delicious!! I love bon bons and theirs are beautifully made. I also bought the Soma malted milk drinking chocolate mix but haven't tried that yet. They sell their own hot chocolate so you can get a cup whilst you browse around - their hot chocolate definitely favors the thick, rich, and creamy end with a very, very slight dark chocolate/bitter undertone. They also hold some chocolate tasting events each month, which I would definitely want to try out, and you can order their goods online too. Overall, if you're looking for a chocolate fix or need to find a unique gift, you need to stop by!

Yelp
Cocoa Store is the only chocolatier in the City where I go to find a large variety of exquisite artisanal chocolates, both in bars and confections. There is no other store quite like this in Manhattan. While many customers come with some knowledge of what bars they want others who have loads of money but no idea ask Pepi DiGiacomo, the owner, to make selections for them. Brands that I like and buy include Castronovo, Fruition, Dick Taylor, Bonnat and Qantu to name a few. Most of all I am passionate about SOMA which is Canadian and if I had well lined pockets I would buy every bar at the store countless times. Their passion fruit caramels are truly addictive. Located on Broadway at 18th Street an elevator will take you up to the sixth floor where you will enter edible heaven. The interior is a pretty loft with beautiful furniture holding the chocolate and some seating. Coming here one doesn't feel like it's a store but entering a drawing room that happens to be filled with charm and Pepi and Genviève.

Yelp
I'm honestly not a big chocolate fan, but these chocolates are absolutely gorgeous and tasty! I love the selection of flavors. You can tell they are very high-quality.

Yelp
Great and welcoming customer service. Went to get some hot coco, it was very good. Will definitely return to explore more of their offerings.

Yelp
You must walk in here!!! A hidden gem of nyc. A chocolate lovers dream. Staff is kind and so knowledgeable.

Yelp
The best chocolate I've ever tasted in my life. Staff was so helpful and the free samples convinced me to buy my holiday gifts here. Will return again!

Yelp
Wonderful chocolate store with a wide selection of the highest quality chocolate bars and truffles (and other surprises like roasted corn covered in chocolate). Knowledgeable and welcoming staff. The chocolate sommelier Genevieve holds occasional chocolate tasting classes that guarantee a fun and delicious evening!

Mark S.

Yelp
As a New Yorker, this is my new favorite spot. I conducted a google search and discovered this wonderful gem whilst searching for a delectable gift for my dear friend during the holidays. When you arrive to the building, one must take an elevator to the sixth floor, then walk down the hallway in order to enter. Once I did, I felt as if I was transported to this beautiful, serene, and elegant space, which immediately reminded me of time spent in Paris. I felt joy, happiness, curiosity, decadence, and most of all, relaxation. Pepi, the owner, has put together this divine experience that I cannot stop thinking of. She and her assistant, Tiffany, were accommodating, gracious, warm, and sincere. Their vast selection of box sets, truffles, chocolate bars, treats, and most things which pertain to high quality grade chocolate will satisfy most anyone. I not only purchased things for others, I was compelled to purchase a few goodies for myself. The goodness of chocolate never fails to soothe me. I partook in a few samples, which left me wanting for more. This is the type of store I could spend hours in learning about their products. The price point might be somewhat high for some, but it is well worth it. And once you indulge in chocolate such as this, you won't want for anything else. They even have chocolate tastings. How incredible is that?! I thoroughly loved every aspect of my experience here and cannot wait to return.

Yelp
A fun store that has an incredible selection. Knowledgeable staff and excellent service make it a great experience.

Yelp
I had a really disappointing experience here. Gourmet chocolates are my thing- and I buy a lot! Price is irrelevant.... usually! So on a Sunday, I see that the Cocoa store is having a sale and my favorite kind of truffles, hazelnut, are apart of the deal. If you ordered a certain amount of chocolates online, you got free shipping. They didn't have that certain amount of hazelnut truffle in stock, so I thought okay, I'll just pay for shipping because I wanted were hazelnut truffles in excess... in fact, I'll paid for one-day shipping! (because I was having a really bad chocolate craving). I wanted these ASAP! So get this-- I pay for expedited shipping, the chocolates get to me 3 days later (even though I live 70 blocks from the store), then I do the 'return to sender' thing because at that point I've found something better, and the store owner refunds me, MINUS THE EXPEDITED SHIPPING CHARGE. So I got no chocolate, Just a shipping charge. And that's not even the worst part- come to find out there were enough hazelnut truffles in stock for me to buy them under the "free shipping" promotion. Apparently I "just needed to call in and ask that they upload more onto the website." What kind of business is this?! Why are you playing games with how much chocolate you sell? The store is sleek. The concept is chic. And the business owner, Pepi, was nice enough (hence, 2 stars instead of 1 star), but I won't frequent here. I'm looking for a chocolatier that treats it's product and customers like gold. This is not just any ole store- people pay big bucks to have their gourmet chocolate cravings met. And I'm one of them! You've got to be on your game when selling something so artisanal.

Yelp
Very friendly - delectable hot chocolate but even classier venue with a rustic, modern interior. Would recommend stopping in just to see the inside. Slightly difficult to get to (being on the 6th floor), but worth the labyrinth.

Yelp
I'm SHOCKED I haven't heard of this spot and this business has been around for 9 years. You have to buzz in and head to the sixth floor where you are greeted by an array of chocolates from around the world. This is a beautiful store with a great ambience and aesthetic. They also have their signature hot chocolate warming in the corner. Their cocoa was very rich and creamy. It is more dark than milk but has a sweetened undertone. This spot is definitely worth a visit.

Yelp
Whenever I want a bar of Soma or Fruition Bourbon Dark Milk Chocolate, I know where to go. The Cocoa Store is the finest place to buy artisanal chocolate in the City. Located on 18th Street between Broadway & Fifth Avenue and helmed and owned by the charming Pepi, one can find numerous bars from brands that now are difficult to find. With the closure of The Meadow and slim pickings at the Chelsea Market Basket, this is a chocolate paradise. A small sandwich sign outside is helpful to first time visitors. Elevator up to the 6th floor and one enters a beautiful large loft decorated in a European style. Chocolates are beautifully arrayed in display cases or on tables. Age took me there the first time and I was excited to see Dick Taylor, Domori, tins of Vestri truffles, the fine French Chocolat Bonnat, Dandelion and Castronovo to name a few. Ranging in price from $5 for the Domori Gianduja (a favorite and perfect as gifts) to $21 for one of the Bonnat bars there is much to admire, seek and buy. Recently I went and bought two bars for the friend who first took me there and several special ones for myself. Dick Taylor's limited edition Vanilla Raspberry brought out for Valentine's is particularly attractive and flavorful. A squat Soma Milk Old School which tastes smooth and is memorable was another purchase. Like fine wine, these chocolates are best enjoyed slowly. No need to finish a bar in one sitting! Samples are offered for those who want to learn about artisanal chocolate and talking to Pepi is educational even for those who have knowledge of these gems. Pepi has customers who also ask her to choose bars for them. So if you cannot make up your mind Pepi will be happy to help. Highly recommended.

Yelp
Such a hole-in-wall place. High quality chocolate especially for dark chocolate lovers. You can even find banana dark chocolate here. Gelato is seasonal. Try the hazelnut chocolate one. It won't let you down ;)

Yelp
Super tiny shop. Seriously, my closet is bigger. But the chocolate is really good. That I can't complain about. They had a bunch of different gelato's from milk chocolate to raspberry to dark chocolate. I got the milk chocolate, which was delicious. The cup/scoop was about the size of my fist so not too bad size wise. I think for a small it was around $6 and they take credit cards. They were also offering free chocolate samples in pistachio and milk chocolate, so score. There was a bench outside the shop so you could sit down and enjoy your gelato or hot chocolate.

Yelp
Tiny space. Cute. Best hot chocolate. Need I say more? You'll have to grab your cocoa to go because there's no room for seating. Artisan chocolate brands you won't find at the usual spots.

E B.

Yelp
While tiny, they have a fantastic selection of chocolate bars! I'm a dark chocolate fanatic so I was in heaven. The woman working the counter was very knowledgeable about all the different bars, and was kind enough to offer samples to try some of the ones she recommended for me. I left with a number of bars and definitely will come back when I need to make my next chocolate haul! If you like chocolate, particularly single-origin chocolate bars, check this place out if you are in the area!

Yelp
I was craving some nice melted dark hot chocolate on a chilly day yesterday. I'm so glad I found this cozy cafe on Yelp. The hot cocoa was just what I wanted. I'm really picky with hot chocolate usually so I didn't have my hopes too high but Cocoa Bar gave me a pleasant surprise with the perfect little cup of bittersweet dark hot cocoa that was just right in every way. I'll be coming back the next time I'm craving some on a cold day!

Yelp
Me and a couple of co-workers went to Cocoa for a mid-afternoon snack. We had been there before and had really good gelato, so we were excited to go. When we got there, there was a sign on the door that said "back in 10 minutes", so we sat down on the benches in front of the store to wait. Someone came back, took the sign down, unlocked the door, and walked away without saying a word, so we waited until she were ready, assuming she would tell us when she was good. We waited on the bench and finally she came out and told us we couldn't sit on the benches, they weren't public. So, she didn't bother to say a word to us like, "give me a few minutes and come in" or "I'm ready, come in", she said nothing and then told us we couldn't sit on the benches. We went to Mr. Softee instead. Its a shame because we really enjoyed it last time we went.

Yelp
Lapin and I passed this tiny shoppe on our way to the Gander. He said he wanted to stop by and take a look since he was in one of his rare hot chocolate moods. The store was very tiny and can probably hold only two people at a time maybe a third -- small child. The place looked like every chocolate lover's dream, it was well stocked with delicious chocolate. The proprietor was very nice and sweet (which was the only reason the store didn't get 1 or 2). We had a two small squares of their chocolate and they were really tasty. We decided to order some hot chocolate since the chocolate was really tasty. We should have been wary when the proprietor said they just started serving it, they haven't nailed the formula down and she didn't know how much to charge. For $5.50 a cup, I expect the most delicious tasting cup of chocolate. Lastly, the recipe must have been off since we both couldn't finish it. It tasted to watery and not sweet enough...it was just plain weird tasting. As note, they do accept cards, they have no whipped cream or coffee but the chocolate is amazing and I would recommend stopping in just for that.

Yelp
A wonderful selection of chocolate bars and treats made with cocoa from across Latin America. Super nice lady running this teeny tiny store, from Columbia, and I bought some very nice bars. This is not a homemade chocolate place, but they do have gelato in the summer and apparently hot cocoa in the winter. I'll stop by any time I'm in the neighborhood.

Yelp
Amazing Chocolates and a very cute store! Great for holiday gifts and special occasions!
