San Diego’s Best Coffee Roasters and Cafes | Eater San Diego

"Expanding from its original cafe in Pacific Beach, this friendly coffee company has established its roastery inside this new Ocean Beach space that serves up single-origin drip coffee and flash-chilled iced coffee along with specialty drinks like lavender-infused lattes and refreshing mocktails. It’s also where Bird Rock Coffee founder Chuck Patton is restarting his coffee career, roasting his own line of coffee and offering coffee cupping and roasting classes." - Helen I. Hwang

Coffee Cycle Roasting Opens New Cafe in Ocean Beach | Eater San Diego

"I learned that Coffee Cycle began as a tricked-out coffee cart mounted on a tricycle that founder Chris O’Brien pedaled around San Diego—he'd been working in the coffee industry since age 16 and never owned a car—and later found a permanent spot in Pacific Beach, operating a small cafe on Grand Avenue since 2017. Their new Voltaire Street storefront in Ocean Beach houses room for a five-kilo roaster where O’Brien will roast the beans for a beverage menu featuring single-origin drip coffee, flash-chilled iced coffee, and specialty drinks like lavender lattes and a honey freddo (an espresso shot shaken with local honey). The cafe makes its own cashew-macadamia nut milk and all flavored syrups, serves mocktails including a virgin mojito and a passionfruit and butterfly pea tea refresher, currently offers empanadas from Empanada Kitchen and will soon introduce in-house sandwiches. The space includes a backyard patio and will host education classes and meet-and-greets with the coffee farmers the company works with directly." - Candice Woo

Was looking for somewhere beachy that wasn’t crazy-crowded on a holiday weekend, and I’m so glad to end up here! The coffee is fair-trade and roasted in-house. Not sure where they source their pastries, but they’re delicious! Service was friendly and personable. 1000% will be back; this is my new go-to spot for coffee in OB or after a run in Mission Bay

The staff here are incredibly kind and friendly, such a warm vibe! I ordered a cappuccino, and while it tasted fine, the milk foam was a bit too airy and lacked that smooth, velvety texture. No latte art either, which was a bit of a letdown. Still, I really appreciated the great service.

Awesome place to work & enjoy your coffee. Lots of seating. Outlet is a little harder but there are some available.

Google
Coffee Cycle is amazing! We love their original PB location as well as this OB location. The coffee is all fair trade and roasted in house with homemade flavors and lots of non-dairy options: oat, almond and their own cashew macadamia nut creamer. The owner, Chris is one of the most personable people you will ever meet and his staff is always approachable and attentive; it’s the kind of place you easily can become a regular at. They know your name and you know all of their names. Just a top notch coffee spot that also offer homemade paninis, Italian soda style drinks along with various pastries and bread. The spot has a lovely outdoor patio with a rack to park your bike as well as a great indoor space featuring vaulted ceilings. If you bike ride, it’s a wonderful ride along the beach and bay from thier PB location to their OB location. If you’re local to San Diego or just passing through, this is a must-visit spot!

Google
Wonderful business run by people who really care! The owner told me about how their flavors are all handmade and everything is thoughtfully sourced! He even poured me a taste of their homemade cashew & macadamia milk- incredible! Thanks so much for the hospitality Chris!

Google
I’ve read so much about this place while scouring Google Reviews, Yelp, and Reddit for the best coffee in San Diego. I was so excited to give this place a try and ordered a classic - iced oat milk vanilla bean latte. It was one of the worst lattes I’ve had in my entire life. 😭 It was so acidic and I couldn’t taste the vanilla bean at all. I trashed it by the time I made it to the end of the block. I was so disappointed.

If you love the excellent coffee, vegan pastries, friendly baristas and welcoming atmosphere at the Coffee Cycle shop in PB, you need to check out their brand new shop on Voltaire St in central OB (between Sunset Cliffs Blvd and Cable). Parking was available right out front those times I have been there, and there is secure bike parking in the rear courtyard. The place is huge, with tables and benches in three different areas, including in the shaded outdoor courtyard. There is even a closeup seating area to observe their roasters and roasting, when active (I think they roast every Monday?). Their WiFi is great, too. Nice crosswinds through the whole shop on those hot summer days.

Google
5/5. Great beverages & food. Friendly staff & owner. Solid place to post up with your laptop and work from. Ambiance & seating arrangements are nice.

Yelp
This coffee shop in the heart of Voltaire Street in OB is very big with different spaces. The patio is very convenient for me when teaching Spanish online. Since so many people seem to use coffee shops as public libraries...I finally joined the train jam it just in the huge ones and just at the patio. I don't like when coffee shop become coworking spaces only and no one can go on a coffee date with a friend or a fling because you bother the peace of the 'nomads'. I like the decor so much here, very cool mural, so expressive and you can see the cyclists in motion. Excellent job. I also like the boho patio, the friendly service and the excellent coffee. Plus the fact that I always find an empty spot, never over crowded. Easy to park outside for a couple of hours.

Yelp
One odd thing about this place is that I did not see where they posted prices. There were menus, but no prices listed. I had no idea how much anything costed until the total amount came up to pay. Thought it was odd. Anyway, I ordered the pumpkin spice latte hot, because the syrup was house made. The flavor was not very strong and more on the weak side We also got the house drip Kenyan (black), which was very good and did not taste weak like a lot of drip coffees do. I also tried the "OB's best breakfast sandwich" which had an egg, smoked pork and pepper jack cheese - it was delicious! The bread was pressed like a panini and it had just enough spice from the cheese. It was so good. The back patio had various seating but there were sooooo many flies back there that it made it uncomfortable to sit for any period of time and I had to rush through my sandwich and couldn't relax and enjoy my coffee.

Yelp
Coffee Cycle is excellent. I will start by saying that I'm not a coffee drinker. But my husband is. Because of this, we've gone from shop to shop across San Diego in search of the best beans. He definitely has his list of favorites and after trying Coffee Cycle, he said that it tops his list! They have so many great varietals and he especially loves that the beans are provided in tins instead of bags which makes them much easier to scoop. Although I'm not a coffee drinker, I love a matcha and know a good one when I taste it! This matcha is soo good! No sugary mix or cheap baking quality. Their matcha is really good. You can tell by the color alone. They clearly take pride in the drinks they serve and this spot has a lot of space to enjoy a drink (with your bike in tow!)

Yelp
Great coffee and very kind baristas. The place was cozy. I got the vanilla bean latte and a mocha with almond milk. They make their own syrups. So good!

Yelp
Coffee Cycle is a fantastic local small business in SD! This is their second location, with their first being in PB. I absolutely love Coffee Cycle! They have fantastic coffee that they ethically sourced from small farmers. They also make their own syrups and non dairy milks, and offer delicious empanadas! This space is about 4x larger than their PB location, with lots of seating options. It's a great place to work from! Lastly, the owner Chris is just the nicest person. I feel great supporting such a wonderful small business.

Yelp
One of my favorite neighborhood coffee shops in OB! Great Carmel latte every time! Haven't tried the paninis yet, but the empanadas were okay! Lots of seating in the back, great to do work/hw. Staff is always super sweet and they make a great latte every time!

Yelp
Coffee Cycle makes extremely good coffee and takes all the steps in being a batista serious, but with a chill, beach attitude. I have already reviewed their amazing coffee at their PB location, but the new OB location includes very yummy sandwiches, sodas, and empanadas. Please go here and try! If unsure, get their latte or flat white.

Yelp
Yesterday, I stopped by Coffee Cycle (4856 Voltaire between Cable and Sunset Cliffs Blvd) for the first time, and it was an experience that completely exceeded my expectations. My opinion, many coffee shops can feel a bit unwelcoming on a first visit, with a "too cool for school" vibe, but Coffee Cycle was refreshingly the opposite. From the moment I walked in, I felt welcomed and at ease. It also helped that the shop was playing Wu-Tang, and Jordan, the friendly barista behind the counter, greeted me right away with a smile and exceptional service. I was in the mood to try a late breakfast (at 1:30 PM ), and Jordan recommended "OB's Best Breakfast Sandwich," a new creation by Chris, the owner. This sandwich was next-level deliciousness and made with thick, local sourdough bread, smoked pork belly, chipotle sauce, pepper jack cheese, and a perfectly cooked egg. Every bite was a blend of bold, rich flavors and left me completely satisfied. This sandwich is super legit!! Highly recommend. It left me already looking forward to my next return visit. Then for mental energy, I paired the sandwich with a honey cinnamon iced latte. This drink was made with cinnamon, local raw honey, housemade cashew, macadamia milk, and espresso. It was smooth, lightly sweet, and energizing. It complemented the sandwich well. The extra welcoming vibe came from Jordan, who after I put in my order then took the time to share the history of Coffee Cycle, how it got started and explained how they source all their beans from around the world, and roast them right there in the shop. Her passion for the craft was contagious actually making me want to learn more about the process behind the coffee, which made the experience feel personal and unique. Now I can't wait to go back and explore more of the menu and also hangout to do a little work in their large open space. If you haven't stopped by yet, I highly recommend checking out this spot as it's the perfect fit for OB.

Yelp
Excellent coffee and friendly baristas. I had a regular drip coffee, and the taste was comparable to a pour-over. Cool indoor/outdoor venue with bike racks near the outdoor seating.

Yelp
I like coming here. It's never too crowded and their coffee is really good and roasted in house. The empanadas are super tasty and served hot, I just ate a ham and cheese one and I feel like I would like to eat 5 more. The vibes here is relaxed and it's walking distance to the beach. Check it out, less crowded than some of the other spots, but better coffee.

Yelp
I'm very excited since this is the best coffee I've ever had in OB (I go back to the 1st Wave). Cycle's beans and in-house brews have both been great. I don't really hang out, but they do have nice indoor and outdoor seating that feels light and airy. Their beans are sold in cute little refillable tins!

Yelp
first time here, passed it a few times and wanted to see what it was like. interesting nice coffee place. staff were super friendly and positive explaining anything/everything about their drinks. everything was done with care and very well executed. available pastries were great and seemed super fresh. liked the back area and bike stands. if any complaint, can the staff be too friendly? also, with the care and attention to each drink/order, I can see the place getting backed up and a bit of a wait if its crowded... small issues overall but I liked this place and will sure to be back.

Yelp
great coffee and good wifi. cute ambience. i was doing homework but they had board games which i thought was a nice touch if you're looking for a coffee get together or date spot. the flies drove me crazy outside but they are everywhere this time of year anyway.

Yelp
Amazing neighborhood spot! The breakfast sandwich is unreal. Friendly and welcoming too, a great place to pop in or hang for a while.

Yelp
Coffee Cycle is a cute little spot in Ocean Beach! It almost has a warehouse vibe - I love it! The baristas were friendly and knowledgable in helping us pick a drink we would like. The coffee was quality, the shop was a unique and cool aesthetic, no complaints here! Can't wait to come back next time I am in OB!

CL B.

Yelp
Wanted to try a local place that's new to OB. Walked in with my 2 kids. Ordered coffees and sandwiches. Barista behind the counter was not friendly at all. White mocha was not a mocha. Sandwiches were disgusting with the cheese not melted and the bread oily. Even tipped the cashier and still the service was horrible. Not a great experience. Will not return.

Yelp
Coffee cycle is mt new go to in Ocean Beach. Excellent coffee great ambiance and really friendly barristas. They roast their own beans and their quality you can taste. I love the bicycle theme. Maybe get some more steel framed road bikes from the 70's/80's and hang them as well. I had the Cortado, my wife the breve cappuccino. Very lush and delicious!
