13 Essential Downtown Dallas Restaurants

"Downtown’s favorite grab-and-go market for prepared foods, wines, and loaves of bread baked on-site also has seating for about 20 people and dine-in options, including soups, pastries, sandwiches, pasta, and gelato." - Courtney E. Smith

"Commissary is a bakery, a butcher, a gelateria, and a market all in one. Impressive, right? These are the people behind all of the Headington Companies restaurants—CBD Provisions at the Joule Hotel, Mirador at Forty Five Ten, and Sassetta and GoGo in the Design District. Everything down to the butchery is done on-site in the bakery and subterranean kitchen. The catering program is extremely popular among locals, and for smaller parties the experienced chefs will come and prepare the menu in your own kitchen. "

Commissary - Review - Downtown - Dallas - The Infatuation

"Commissary is a sandwich counter, butcher shop, market, coffee shop, and gelateria, so you can stop in for coffee and a pastry, and walk out with cold cuts and gelato. There’s always a line out the door during peak lunch hours, which makes sense since their French dip with pho broth and quinoa salad with lamb kafta are both excellent. It’s also right in the middle of Downtown, which makes it an ideal spot to for a work break, or before you check out the Dallas World Aquarium." - Landen Kerr

Google
Great cafe and breakfast spot. There’s pastries, juices, and a bunch of breakfast options. I got the strawberry mocha is it was delicious. You can definitely eat in but most people took it away.

Google
Good food! Great service! Had the chicken biscuit and Bagel Sandwiche. Very tasty. Milk was my drink. Cold and fresh. Cute little place next to several hotels.

I had the pleasure of visiting Commissary at 1217 Main Street in Dallas, and it was nothing short of exceptional. I ordered the coconut banana oatmeal, and let me tell you—it was delicious. Creamy, perfectly balanced in flavor, and so satisfying that I could have stopped right there. But I couldn’t resist trying more. The breakfast potatoes were a standout—well-seasoned, tender on the inside, and cooked to perfection. The portion size is generous—easily enough to share with a friend (trust me, you’ll want to). The bacon came out beautifully curly, adding a touch of fun to the plate, and both the potatoes and bacon were served in a charming cardboard box with a see-through top. The presentation? Spot on. The atmosphere of the restaurant is cozy, inviting, and stylish—perfect for a relaxed breakfast or brunch. At a price point of $22 for everything I ordered, it was well worth it, though I probably could have just enjoyed the oatmeal and been completely satisfied. But everything looked so good, I wanted to taste it all—and I’m glad I did. If you’re looking for great food, excellent presentation, and a welcoming atmosphere in downtown Dallas, Commissary is the place to go. Five stars all the way! Highly recommend.

Google
Great choice for a morning bite or midday meal—expect solid coffee, standout avocado toast, and gourmet-style sandwiches in a relaxed environment.

Google
A gem for breakfast/lunch meals. They serve a wide selection of all-day breakfast favorites, plus some of the best baked goods in downtown. Their sandwiches, salads, and drinks are just as impressive, and the service is outstanding. The only downside? Portion sizes shrink after lunch 😢, but the quality remains top-notch.

Mark Nichols

Google
Great selection of freshly made breakfast and brunch food. Friendly server and good coffee too! Didn't have any of their pastries but they all looked great.

Scott West

Google
Breakfast all day! Downtown need more places that you have the option to stop in and get breakfast anytime. The burrito 🌯 was perfect.

Google
Great stop for coffee and breakfast! Fast and delicious food. Grab and go or sit down.

Yelp
Interesting little spot in the middle of downtown Dallas. Very high end and up scale with a noteworthy wine selection. The price point definitely reflects this. They even have gourmet snacks, fruits, and cheeses in their little grocery area. I ordered a pastry, the breakfast tacos, and an iced oat milk latte. The latte was just okay, the breakfast tacos were so-so because they weren't seasoned. (They did come with a side of salsa) The potatoes in the tacos were fantastic though, and I would probably just order a side of those next time. The pastry was good but not super memorable. All in all, it was a bit of a mixed experience. Maybe I ordered the wrong things? I'm not sure. If you're staying in a hotel downtown it's super convenient and easy to walk to, so I'll just leave it at that.

Yelp
Egg Sandwich, Avocado Toast Super just okay food that is quite pricey. Perhaps it tastes better in store but this was pretty disappointing and not worth the price!

Yelp
We ate many good meals on our trip to Dallas, but honestly this was my favorite. The turkey sando is just best, most flavorful turkey sandwich I have ever had! Others in my party, had the chicken ciabatta and the butchers plate. You should see the pieces of bacon. It might of well been a steak. They were huge. I would love to make it back to have another meal here!
google avatar

Yelp
Been coming here the last few months and it's been a fantastic spot to grab some breakfast and coffee. Great service and you should definitely try the breakfast tacos (the bacon ones are the best). Also coffee is great! Good music and great location in downtown Dallas.

Yelp
We came after the Christmas parade, so I thought it would be packed, loud, and dirty! We came in and it was quiet, clean, and cozy! The staff was warm and friendly! I got the side of potatoes, it was weird at first because they are whole pirates, but after one bite, it didn't matter. Each bite is AMAZING! The bathrooms were were clean. They had someone coming around to give samples of ice cream. This was really a pleasant visit! I will come back!

Yelp
Was in the area and decided to stop by for breakfast since I have seen this place many times online and never tried it. Such vibrant decor and very friendly staff! I love that very much I got an almond milk vanilla lavender latte with a little bit of cinnamon and a jalapeño cheddar biscuit sandwich! Omg both were a hit! Definitely will be back just not frequently because downtown parking is madness lol.

Yelp
Stopped here for breakfast before heading out of town while staying in Dallas. We had breakfast, and I ordered a breakfast burrito- which comes with a couple different breakfast meats, eggs, and sauce. In addition, we shared an order of breakfast potatoes. The burrito was very good, a nice layering of flavors inside with the sauce as a added spice and the eggs serving as the glue keeping everything together. I think the burrito is a solid choice - and it's a non-messy handheld for consumption. I would say the breakfast potatoes however, were the real winner and blew my mind. Served in a large paper box, these small potatoes were salted and seasoned, and after their temperature dropped from the surface of the sun, these were great. You absolutely get your money's worth with those and they are shareable! Also added a vanilla iced latte - which was good Staff was friendly and service was quick!

Yelp
Came for the aesthetic blue interior. Bagel was surprisingly so yummy!!! Everyone enjoyed what they had.

Yelp
The choice of places to eat, the prices and even being in proximity to the ATT park was so enjoyable. It all beat hanging out in my hotel room.

Jess I.

Yelp
Close to work so I pop in quite often- their pistachio oat milk latte is SO good. One of my fave coffee drinks I've had in the city. Also, aren't as pricey as other coffee shops downtown and baristas are always friendly. Tried a couple pastries, they were good but never any actual food.

Yelp
Homer is the BEST CASHIER! He was friendly efficient, observant and personable. We shop about once a month, we like that we save on our favorite products ! people there treat military with respect. Traveling all over USA makes us proud of what Fort Ben offers us although we remember the exchange as great place to shop for clothes not so any more Since we don't drink or smoke,I guess we won't be shopping there anymore. No more medical either. we could use a break on our meds, but oh well we can't have it like it use to be Thanks Joe Biden

Yelp
There are certain items on the menu here that are the best in Downtown Dallas. The Roast Beef Sandwich and Grilled Cheese are top shelf! Always ask what's on it before you order it, because these are chef-created dishes - so the simple name alone does not describe what you are ordering. Have fun and eat well!!!!!

Moriah D.

Yelp
Ordered off DoorDash so I can't speak on the service; the breakfast burrito was phenomenal/ to die for/ delicious. 10/10 highly recommend!!!

Yelp
Great place to get coffee or lunch while downtown. Service is fast and friendly. You have to try the tomato soup and grill cheese. Seriously delicious!!!
google avatar

Yelp
This place has one of the best breakfast burritos in the city and it is always consistent even when ordered on doordash in the last hour. Please give the cooks a raise and thank you for the great food! God bless.
google avatar

Amanda M.

Yelp
Pricey but good After waking around the city for a bit and not finding many breakfast options we came across this place. They had a bagel sandwich with egg in the display case. I ordered one of them and had it heated up. It was very good. My husband had a bagel sandwich with egg, chicken sausage and sauce. Nice clean bathrooms. Just expensive for a breakfast food.
google avatar

Yelp
LOVE LOVE LOVE!! We had the breakfast tacos and they were amazing.... I also had the coconut oatmeal and was overwhelmed with goodness!! We had a latte and cappuccino!! All so good and definitely will be going back!
google avatar

Yelp
Tried a few items here during my stay in Dallas and was pleasantly surprised at the reasonable cost and quality of the items. The seasonal fruit was fresh and was provided in a good size bowl. The breakfast potatoes came in a generous portion and was seasoned quite well. The breakfast taco was a bit plain without the salsa but when mixed together was quite nice. This place is fairly large and can be slightly confusing to a first time visitor.

Yelp
I've had this place in La and knew what to expect. Really good food and fun atmosphere inside. Offer super healthy food got bagels to go and they give you plenty of butter, utensils and napkins

Brent A.

Yelp
Good service, great breakfast bagel sandwich, breakfast potatoes are awesome. Good coffee, clean and friendly. Loved it.

Yelp
I've visited this place quite a bit in the last three months and have had various things in the menu. The coffee and espresso are of great quality and all the syrups for the lattes are homemade! This place has an excellent made to order burger also, wasn't expecting that from a coffee shop. I wish they opened at 7:30, but I certainly understand why they aren't. The service is always friendly and prompt.

Yelp
The Commissary is an amazingly convenient and high quality place to get good food fast in Downtown Dallas. The exterior is a beautiful checkered blue color that is hard to miss. The interior is a clean contemporary yet comfortable place to get your food, bakery items, or convenience grab-and-go goods. In addition to these items, you can get coffee and espresso based beverages. Truly everything that a busy person needs to feed their needs! Breakfast is a good thing to get here, the Coconut Oatmeal is great, and the Avocado Toast is the best I've had anywhere! Pair this with a coffee and you are ready for the day. You can eat in at one of the shiny aluminum tables, or you can get pretty much anything to go. Take a pastry, muffin, or cookie with you for later! Lunch is likewise a great experience. They have big entree-sized salads, sandwiches, and a daily special that always looks mouth-watering. The Curry Chicken Salad Sandwich is an amazing choice, it comes on a giant flaky croissant with crunchy veggies. One can get a number of tasty sides to go with it. The quality and convenience of the Commissary make it a step above, as befits Downtown Dallas. Stop by and treat yourself to some of their great options.

Yelp
I was just walking my dog in the neighborhood and stopped in for a breakfast burrito. The staff is so friendly thank you to John and Beatrice and my burrito was so tasty. The place is clean. I will definitely be back.

Yelp
Best black and white cookies in the universe. They are the perfect balance and I think of them often.

Yelp
All good marks for me here. Nice staff, cute place, different offerings, easy to order and gather items then sit also appreciate the health options of egg white on a poppy seed with Arugula and feta. The Chai Tea latte was great, too.

Yelp
Few companies train their employees to provide service of this quality. I've been in service industry my whole life - giving that type of service. It is nice to pop into a place where one can get and see this type of service delivered. I noticed one guy ask another for something and the gentleman had a look of concern, interest, and openness about wanting to help or answer the question that was asked. That's team work! Food was delicious. The place was clean. Got a loaf of bread from them as well and enjoyed it at my hotel. I loved this level of service, quality, and originality in a downtown food scene which has been very disappointing so far. I felt like I was in Portland or LA downtown with these guys. Keep up the good work. ( and get some plates )
google avatar

Yelp
Finally got to come out and check this place out to see what all the buss on IG was about. Now I know! I loved the open concept and the butcher/coffeehouse/grocery vibe. Staff where all very nice. I tried a great item from the front case called fiselle(I think)WOW I loved it. Fresh cured meats form the deli/ creamy Brie cheese And housemaid grainy mustard on a long skinny baguette. That and my latte filled me up nicely. The prices where reasonable and serving sizes Nice as well. They have some wine/beer/Kombucha/juices etc available in a cold box and even some "fooodie merch" I took the train in from Grapevine and it was a quick walk from the Akard Station.
google avatar

Scott C.

Yelp
Location not great, the corner is a little rough, but the breakfast sandwich I ate may be the best I've had! You order when you walk in and pick up your own food, but the diner type atmosphere is pretty cool. Cool little city breakfast spot with quick service.

Yelp
Came by here a few times while I was visiting Dallas, I was staying up the street and saw this place so we decided to come here. Located in downtown Dallas off Main & N. Field St, it's right at the corner so you won't be able to miss it. It's like a bakery, butcher shop, sandwich shop, coffee shop, gelato shop, so it's a one stop shop type of shop. We came here for breakfast one morning for a bagel & coffee, freshly baked bagels, pretty good chew to the everything bagel and good flavor to the everything. Drip coffee was tasty as well, no clue what kind of coffee it is though. We've also come here for dessert as well and checked out the gelato bar. Good flavors to choose from and pretty tasty. Gelato seems to be made in-house and interesting flavors that will pique your interest. I got the Horchata & Salted Caramel, good combo in my opinion. Also the Sicilian Pistachio gelato wasn't too shabby. Staff is friendly, order at the counter, they will give you a number and will bring out your food to you. Prices are ok I guess, about what I thought things would cost. I do like the decor inside, modern yet old deli style touches to it. Glad we came by, I would come back if I lived near there.

Yelp
I have been loving this place during quarantine! They offer grocery & market options that make it easy to kill two birds with one stone. The dry aged beef & ribeye has been a staple for us and I love everything I have had from here. We have mainly ordered breakfast -- burrito, potatoes, tacos, & tomato soup. Definitely good sized portions and delicious at that! Looking forward to be able to lunch in person!
google avatar

Yelp
Finally writing a review. I work across the street from this place. Never came here before. A colleague of mine wanted to come to this place one day for lunch. So we can on a Wednesday afternoon more than a month ago. It was quite busy, but folks were leaving as they finished eating, so he and I were able to grab a seat. We had the daily special or the special of the week, I forgot what it was, but it was so good! This is the problem with writing a review so late, you forget the name of the special and it's not in the menu. Luckily I have photos of the sandwich I had. The potato salad was prbl the best I've had from a quick casual restaurant like this. Only thing to consider is that it can be pricy. But the portion was huge, so I was satisfied.

Simon M.

Yelp
Disappointing, listed as gluten free for breakfast, when we asked they couldn't offer anything other than coffee, very unhelpful, table was dirty told the girl behind the counter and she gave my wife a cloth to wipe the table herself, we won't be returning
google avatar

Jana S.

Yelp
Favs: -Freshly made, yummy desserts -Kale Caesar salad is the best -Love the curry chicken salad sandwich -Excellent smoked tomato bisque -They carry Deep River brand chips - I love that brand! Don't order: Avoid the Italian and ham and cheese sandwiches unless you like meat that's very fatty, greasy, and hard to chew. Their "house cured meats" and ham are exactly that. I had such high hopes too....
google avatar

Cat N.

Yelp
I know a blogger who eats here every weekend so I decided to give them a try. Parking is horrible because it's downtown but they have free parking across the street for 90 mins. Otherwise, find meter parking in the streets. I got my orders to go because of parking issues. Got two cacio e pepe biscuits, guava puff pastty, and a candied apple to go. The candied apple was my least favorite. It was cinnamon flavor. I hate cinnamon, inside was cinnamon apple and mousse. Not their fault and it's just my preference. My favs were the biscuits and the puff pastry. It was so BUTTERY and flakey!!!

Jerry W.

Yelp
This is a very cool restaurant in the heart of downtown Dallas with great service. The food is alway fresh and served promptly regardless of whether you are picking up or dining in. The breakfast burritos with chicken sausage are my favorite, good luck eating a whole one. This place is great, check it out!
google avatar

Lauren M.

Yelp
Nothing is more inviting than a beautiful, open, well lit space. Commissary draws your eye right through the glass windows to see displays of fresh breads, cured meats, intricate pastries and more. I was delighted by a breakfast treat made of puff pastry, filled with cream cheese, meat and topped with everything bagel seasoning. It was every bit as decadent and delicious as it sounds. An everything bagel was taken to go, sliced and toasted at home and fell a little on the disappointing side of the spectrum. I had high expectations since I know that Commissary has been supplying foodstuffs for the Headington concepts for years. The biggest surprise was the reasonable prices - I was so delighted. I will, however, be back for a number of their breakfast items such as their coconut milk oatmeal or for some cured meats with wine. And who can forget their beautiful pastry case? If you need a quick grocery item, don't fret, they've got you covered with a small selection of wines and other basic grocery items plus some ready-to-go meals. Don't stress about parking downtown. Simply park in the parking garage across the street for free just don't forget to get your parking validated!
google avatar

Yelp
The highlight of a recent business meeting in Dallas, with some FANTASTIC cupcakes from the Comissary. From the minute you open the door of the unusually blue tiled building you know you've entered someplace special and unique. Ive seen a sprinkling of people eating and working here or small tables of individuals in apparent business meetings. I've been here a few times upon trips to Dallas but my first time calling ahead to get cupcakes for a meeting. The standout flavors were pumpkin and red velvet. The chocolate ones were so decadent and all flavors are ideal if you are a frosting lover! They tasted so fresh and moist too. I love the variety take out (or dine in) options here and the friendly, helpful staff. The hardest part about coming here? Trying to decide what you want to eat or drink. A little pricier than most deli or bakery type places but worth it. Great little gem in the heart of downtown Dallas. I'll be back on future visits!
google avatar

Rich S.

Yelp
May 13-14, 2021 Turkey Sando Wrap - no lettuce, tomato, veggies (onions), WITH EXTRA meat... It was surprisingly good - although meat was spilling out of wrap. Not a "clean" meal, but so delicious!! I especially like their homemade dressing! Next day (Friday); Italian sandwich - too bready. Service was slow, considering only 2 people were there. I'll return for that Turkey wrap again!
google avatar

Nicole C.

Yelp
Stopped in for lunch, this is new to the downtown scene. It's pretty and kind of trendy/casual inside. A good variety of things. I ordered a turkey club and it was tasty, fresh ingredients. I enjoyed it. On another date I tried the baked ziti with chicken, and was unimpressed. 2.5 stars at most. Had extra large blobs of goopy Mozarella..... and not in the yummy-cheesy kind of way. It was more so like I was eating blobs of Mozarella with ziti on the side. It's confusing on where to order, it seems they haven't worked out the best system just yet with cashiers and calling out names of people to pick up orders. It was very busy during lunch hour. I walked out a bit flustered and annoyed. Since it was busy things were disorganized and loud. I see some good potential here, just need to work out a few technicalities. Plan to spend somewhere in between $10-$20 on lunch. It's not cheap. You will easily end up spending close to $20 on just a salad. Would I return? No. Maybe for coffee? Meh. I wont spend money here again. My personal preference will always be food that is well seasoned. I need some flavor in my life. Not terrible but def room for improvement.
google avatar

Yelp
This place has been in the works for a long time and it's well worth it. Think of it as a marketplace and eatery. It has a nice NYC deli feel to it. SUPER cool and friendly staff. There's a great selection of jams, jellies, beers, wines, chips, meats, cold and prepared items. You definitely can come here at anytime and enjoy multiple options. Their in house cured and prepared meat selection is insane! Dry age steaks, multiple selections of cured meats, sausages, and rotisserie chickens to name a few. The in house bakery has at least a dozen options to choose from. I've eaten here several times now and I've had the burger (good chew and flavor, says cheese burger but didn't come with cheese), everything bagel with Fresno chili pepper jelly smear (a little small for a bagel but it's freshly made on site), and a bacon breakfast taco with salsa verde. Although the taco had great flavor, it was on the small side as well. I really like the feel of this place. It's trendy with a real low key vibe, the staff are always willing to offer suggestions if you need help and the food is r ally tasty. I'm excited to see what the future holds for this spot!
google avatar

Rachel G.

Yelp
I loved the simplicity and the complexity of their choices. There's a little bit of everything for everyone. My boyfriend got the fruit and yogurt bowl and seemed to really like it and I got the breakfast sandwich, but with a whole egg and everything was cooked to perfection and full of flavor. I also got the BEST iced mocha I've ever had. Ever. I work at a place that sells all kinds of coffees and cannot put my finger on what made it so exceptional. The only downfall was we ordered a blueberry muffin and got chocolate chip.
google avatar

Shandelle B.

Yelp
Loving this place so far! It's a much needed addition to life downtown. Right now the only drawback is that they are only open until 7pm, but it's posted that later hours are coming soon. I've already popped over several times to pickup small things like specialty cheese, wine, and crackers. I'm loving it! They have quite a few great looking menu options but I haven't had a chance to try any of their prepared foods yet. The option to buy dry aged steaks is phenomenal! We are planning on picking up some this weekend to make at home. The coffee is great! I've stopped in for a few regular cups and a couple of cappuccinos. Judging by the lines at lunch this place has become a quick favorite. It's even solving smelly downtown problems. The scents from the bakery below waft throughout downtown in the morning and smell freaking delicious!
google avatar

Paulette J.

Yelp
Absolutely delightful! Delicious coffee, pastry, and foods of all kinds! So happy The Commissary is in downtown Dallas! Great place to get a last minute gift, too.
google avatar

Shannon W.

Yelp
I love love love this spot and try to get it every time I'm in Dallas! Stumbled upon it once when staying at a hotel nearby, and fell in love. Their avocado toast is some of my favorite I've ever had, and we started trying to make it like theirs at home here in CA. They put a little dash of chili oil on it and it's just so good! Their lattes are also so yummy, along with their breakfast sandwiches. You can't go wrong here!
google avatar

Nivi R.

Yelp
During my travels to Dallas for work, I used to stay at a hotel couple blocks from here. Love everything here - coffee, salads, sandwiches. Great spot for lunch.
google avatar

Anthony L.

Yelp
The Commissary is a place that I have wanted to visit for a while! The distinctive blue tile was something that peaked my interest and every time I looked at things to do in Dallas it was on my list. The blue tile is mesmerizing! It covers the place, insides and out. Now to the coffee. It was good! The espresso here is nice. There is also (as the name portrays) a little market to buy other food items. Being in downtown Dallas, the prices aren't cheap but they didn't seem to be too high. Overall this is a nice coffee shop. Not the best in Dallas but definitely worth a stop, if nothing else than to see the blue tile!
google avatar

Gina K.

Yelp
I loved coming to this coffee shop. They serve much more than coffee and I love the variety of options they provide. There's gelato, pastries, sandwiches, and more. I came here twice in a week and both times my friends and I loved it. I recommend the gelato and ice coffee if you need something quick. The service was great. I felt like the staff was helpful when I needed assistance. The only reason why I couldn't give this adorable place 5 stars was because parking was so frustrating. There's construction going on around the business and the nearest parking deck wouldn't allow for public access.
google avatar

Jody J.

Yelp
Delicious breakfast sandwich on a bagel and avocado toast! Also the best chai latte I have ever had. Would definitely go again and again
