I bought croissants, pain au chocolat, sables and a tarte aux pommes. The first two were not great, have definitely had better at other less well known spots. The apple galette and the sables were very good. Overall - it was ok but not amazing.

Google

Yelp
We really wanted to try this bakery when visiting Paris, so we came to this location and were very disappointed to see it's really just an outpost of the main bakery, so the selection was very limited. The items we did try were nice, but there wasn't much to choose from. Additionally, everything needed to be taken to go, as they don't have seats, nor tables and they also don't have espresso or coffee. So, we took the pastries we bought to a local café and enjoyed their coffee with these pastries. The pastries were good.

Yelp
Stopped in for a snack on the way to Luxembourg Gardens. The chausson aux pommes was absolutely incredible. Also grabbed a bag of sable cookies to take back home to the US - I did dip into the bag a bit, but they mostly made it and were still good up to a week later!

Yelp
Poilane is a great boulangerie. The bread is fresh, the apple-based pastries are good, but for some reason the thin cookies they sell in the plastic case were the standouts.

Yelp
The anticipation of visiting Poilâne is almost too much to handle, however once you arrive it's magical! The breads, the baked goods, the savory delights and accessories are just wonderful! I start with an entire, yes that's right an entire loaf (no judging)of the signature loaf of bread and we are set for a couple of days, just add cheese, ham and wine!

Yelp
Poilâne boulagerie was as good as expected. We tried the croissant and was fresh and excellent. It's a stone throw from Eiffel Tower. Definitely a highlight of our trip in Paris for my wife

Yelp
Staying in nearby Montparnasse, decided to grab pastries and croissants here to take back to my hotel to indulge with throughout the day. As others mentioned, I highly recommend you come as early as possible for not only the freshest pastries but also just to smell inside the bakery. The yeasty smells from fresh baked bread should literally be boxed up and taken with you everywhere. The girls who worked there spoke great English and after carefully trying hard not to purchase the whole store I picked our plain croissants, a load of brioche and a tub of butter (which was about $8 euros but worth it). While prices may seem high you're paying for top quality and probably some of the best baked goods you'll ever have.

Yelp
This bakery was the starting point of a food tour by Paris by Mouth (https://parisbymouth.com) I took in the summer of 2016. We only tried one pastry (apple) as a sample. It was good, but not a WOW. I bought some cookies for souvenir. They are also good but nothing amazing. I just visited here again in March 2017. I asked one of the people working here for her recommendation. She strongly recommended their flan (picture). I love sweets, but I couldn't finish even half of it. Because of my so-so experiences and their prices, I don't think I will try them again. There are many other bakeries I want to try in Paris. So, I suggest that you try them, but if it's not your liking, I suggest that you move on to a different bakery. ****************************** If you found something useful in my review, please hit "useful." Your feedback helps me improve my future reviews. If you love food or traveling, don't forget to follow me! Thank you and happy Yelping!

Yelp
Had breakfast at Poilâne and I must say I was a bit disappointed. It wasn't bad, but considering the raving reviews of this place, it didn't meet my expectations. Food: we ordered the complete breakfast (Switched our the croissant for a chocolate croissant), the toast with egg and cheese, an apple turnover, and the croissant+coffee combo. The food was mediocre, nothing too special or life changing. The croissant was good. Very fluffy and extremely buttery... but it was cold. All the pastries we ordered were COLD, which was extremely sad. Considering we sat down to eat, I would have expected them to heat it up for us. It truly would have made the biggest difference. The toast with egg and cheese was the only warm thing and it was yummy but definitely not worth the price we paid for it. Atmosphere: we were one of the first ones at the store and they seated us in a corner in the back where we later had to share the table with other customers. It was not an ideal situation.

Yelp
My favorite croissant in Paris! Saw this recommended on quite a few locals' guides to Paris, so knew I had to make a stop here. It was about a 10 minute walk (max) from the Metro through a very cute neighborhood, filled with lots of shops and boutiques. This location is also close to Pierre Herme if you're looking to hit up all of Paris' famous dessert spots. I got a simple croissant, which cost me 2 euros. The employees didn't speak English very well (understandable and anticipated!) but a simple "je voudrais une croissant" sufficed. The croissant itself was magical - super flakey and buttery and warm!! I was unfortunately only in Paris for 2 days, otherwise would have come back and eaten many baguettes.

Yelp
This is the place to go for 3 things: 1) Punitions/Sables. These are a butter cookie that they make, which EVERYONE loves. I have to bring everyone in my family home their own giant bag whenever I go to Paris. They go great with a little jam or Nutella on them too. 2) Miche. This is their country loaf. It's made using a natural yeast fermentation process using an extremely old starter dough. Packed with SO much flavor! This is my favorite bread for toast in the morning, or to add jam or Nutella on as an afternoon snack. It's also great for sandwiches. 3) Croissants. Super buttery and flakey. You'll love them! Bonus is the apple galette from time to time.

Yelp
Great breakfast spot! Came here because of the good reputation and it was indeed delightful. I had their brioche - with an egg inside and melted cheese on top - as well as their apple tart. I liked both, and the thick toasted brioche was the most delicious. The service was efficient and pleasant. Really nice staff - my server was cool, although she wouldn't stop speaking to me in English (I'm trying to practice the little bit of French I know LOL!). Going to have to buy bread and pastries from their bakery section sometime!

Julia R.

Yelp
The pastries were delicious and the prices were very good. A great little place for a quick bite, make sure to check that it's open first though.

Yelp
I think it's a bit overhyped by social media. Not a terrible place but there much better bakeries around that are cheaper. The bread was not as soft as other with the croissants. They are mostly known for their big loaf of bread with the signature P. I would skip it. Stohrer is better if you need to try one of these trendy social media boom bakeries in Paris. Their croissants and others are flaky, soft, with great taste. There are so many bakeries in Paris you can find good ones almost anywhere.

Yelp
Wonderfully and inimitable dense textured rustic sourdough country loaf that has captured me, line hook and sunk!!!! Weighing in at 4 pounds, this 3 step process requiring a full 5 hours in the full to rafter basements (lucky Patricia Wells got to tour the basement and provided photos online) are wonderfully nutty, rich, dark, and awesome with slathered melted butter! One of the most famous breads in the world, Poilâne bread is made from whole grain and stone-milled wheat flour, seasoned with sea salt,& raised wholly sans yeast or preservatives! Finally, rounds are baked in a wood burning oven to glorious fruition. Yummmmmm----Acme sells some loaves that approximate that wonderful dark melding of wheaty goodness. France's most celebrated bread round, to be sure! & don't you dare forget about their OTT punitions cookies if you're gonna brave that queue anyway!!! Ps there's an outlet in Japan?!!!
google avatar

Kenny C.

Yelp
This is always on our "must-visit" list whenever we are in town. My main go-to is their punition cookies in any shape or form (my preferred is the spoon-shaped ones because of how convenient it is and you can make them last longer if you're a nibbler like me). They are also really well known for their sourdough bread as well. The interior space is rather cozy so you should really know what you're going to order and leave ASAP. Otherwise, it can get very claustrophobic inside. There's also a nice liked sit-down sister-restaurant next door that is a good brunch spot too!
google avatar

Rachel C.

Yelp
Great place for lunch, very reasonably priced. The bread is so good you'll want to stop by the bakery next door to take home a loaf (or two) with you! Be aware, they do not take credit cards!

Yelp
Rotten service Ordered box of Xmas gifts including 2 loaves of bread, 2 bread knives, 2 bags of biscuits Arrived late from Paris to NYC bread was hard as a rock/could NOT cut biscuits were stale [inedible] knives were defective; the end of the handle curved up, not down like every other cutting knife in existence, making it awkward to use $200 wasted as could not gift any of these items they refused to refund my purchase, insisting all was as it should be VERY DISAPPOINTED

Yelp
Second stop on our food tour was this bakery, walking in if u love bread the smell alone will make u crazy not a lot of things smell as wonderful as fresh baked bread does. Once inside they spoke a bit about the process of how the bread is made all baking is done on premises starting early in the morning. Cool to see was the lamp made entirely of bread such a cool concept if I recall correctly think they have to replace it every 6 months. This bakery specializes in customizing the bread u can pretty much add anything u want to the bread your name, shapes whatever suites u... they also seem to be a major supplier of bread for France not bad. We were able to try the Butter cookies which were very good nice taste. Also tried a piece of fresh bread pretty good as well. Small shop above all the baking is done on premises below this place was nice to check out.

Yelp
First stop in Paris! The two of us have always wanted to try the bread at Poilâne after reading the interesting New Yorker article about the owner several years ago. Luckily, this original location wasn't far from our hotel. We got two slices of the miche sourdough, an apple tart, and three complimentary punitions. The bread is delicious, with a crisp crust and chewy sourness in the middle--we wished we had some butter on us to make it Next Level! We're not big cooked apple people, but we still enjoyed the tart, and two thumbs up for extra flakiness. The punitions are sables--none of us were having a "le wow!!!" experience, though they were fine. It's a butter cookie, everyone, calm down. Our only complaint was the particularly rude woman who was helping us. Oui, oui, we KNOW that all service personnel in France are rude (this isn't our first French rodeo!) but one of us speaks French half-decently and she was still being rude. For no reason! Everyone else in the store seemed somewhat pleasant, so...pourquoi, Madame Grumpypantalons?? Anyway, happy to have tried this place once, but it doesn't need to be a "must stop" on repeat visits. You're damn right that we would be buying our bread here, however, if we lived in Paris.
google avatar

Philip S.

Yelp
I came here three years ago for their famous apple tarts. I usually hate apple desserts, especially when the apple is baked, but wow this place was good. I wasn't surprised that they specialize in apple tarts. There's not as much hype around this bakery, so it's more lowkey. Not as busy, but just as good as any bakery in Paris. Definitely worth visiting!
google avatar

Dan G.

Yelp
My experience this time was mediocre but I was partly to blame as I went late in the afternoon. The women working there were unfriendly and looked tired. Of course the selection of available offerings was pretty depleted but that was because of the time of day. The workers really were unhelpful and could care less that I had entered their shop. The sourdough was delicious as always.
google avatar

Nick D.

Yelp
Before a day of walking all over Paris, I needed some chocolate croissant action in my life. I was so excited to finally explore a real French bakery. This picture can't explain how tasty and flakey it was. It's a perfect breakfast.

Lisa B.

Yelp
I have been wanting a loaf of Poilâne sourdough for years. Really, since I last visited Paris in the 80's. A friend tried to bring me a loaf once & left it on the airplane. Bummer! Anyway when I arrived at the Cherche-Midi address I found a line outside the shop door. Needless to say, I waited in line for my turn & promptly got a loaf & left the shop. I don't remember the shop being as small as it was, which really didn't allow for perusing the other available goods. Mission accomplished after about 48 hours of backpack toting my almost 3 pound miche home I sliced into it. I suppose if I had sliced into it immediately it would have been great. I love the hearty texture & sourness. It is different than typical California sourdough. Maybe I will try it again when I can eat it the day it is purchased, but for now I will be happy with my small local bread bakeries. Or, I can try making my own using Apollonia Poilâne's book that my son gave me for Christmas.
google avatar

Cynthia C.

Yelp
Got here right before closing and wasn't sure what to expect or buy hehe. Had to ask the workers there what's the "famous bread" that everyone talks about. She pointed to this loaf of bread and said that one and asked me how many I wanted. Me: "one please" Her eyes were bulging when she responded: "one?!" Me: "umm two?" Turns out they sell it by the slice hehe. So I bought two tiny slices of bread to try which was enough for me. Also got the apple tart cause she gave me weird looks. The bread was flavorful and the apple pie was good but doughy. I'm definitely not a pro of breads but it was good for me!

Yelp
Drum roll please. A rare 5-star rating for Boulangerie Poilâne. When looking from the street at this temple to flour, water and egg and then entering the very small storefront, I immediately have thoughts that behind this small facade is a large, never-ending-space a la Men In Black where what might possibly be the world's finest breads are made. Whether sweet or savory, the breads, cookies and all else they purvey is out of this world and should be visited as many times possible whenever in Paris. When you step across the threshold at Boulangerie Poilâne, you are stepping into rarified air.

Yelp
You know you're a lucky tourist when you by chance wander into a bakery that locals frequent. Poilane is exactly that place. Even their butter cookies are excellent. My next visit will not be accidental. :) They do ship to the US if you order online. Shipping starts at 30 EUR.
google avatar

Shereen C.

Yelp
Got the apple tart and apple chausson, which were okay. Fillings were a little bland. Pastry seemed a bit too thick. I'd like to try some of their bread though -- they have a beautiful display with different kinds of loaves.
google avatar

Michelle B.

Yelp
Bread Mecca with a rustic feel. I would live inside Poilane if I could. Of course, got a croissant which was absolutely scrumptious.
google avatar

Chloe K.

Yelp
Try to arrive mid-afternoon when the apple turnovers are fresh out of the oven. All the regular gorgeous Poilâne sourdough breads, too.
google avatar

Kelly A.

Yelp
Although I'd been getting pain Poilâne half loaves at the neighborhood Shopi market on both our visits, I finally made a pilgrimage to the boulangerie. Their hearty signature bread is a favorite of mine, a complex sourdough with part whole wheat flour. I bought a whole loaf to take home and it stayed fresh for several days. Alas, I had to give up gluten at the start of the year. I'm optimistic that there will be a cure (or at least an enzyme) so that I can enjoy this fine bread again one day, and some of the lovely desserts they also had for sale.

Yelp
Wow. I love this store of bread heaven. We ordered (or actually pointed lol): 1. Croissant x 2 http://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?select=Z8oYRefCZcoAT9djMZHzNg&userid=yhMT_nlpa7ox1Yo8QMUoJA 2. Apple turnover x 2 3. Apple tart x 1 http://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?select=Fwr--kyGEvGicfglF1pTeA&userid=yhMT_nlpa7ox1Yo8QMUoJA Total of 8.10 Euros Please point to what you would like and not touch the merchandise. The ladies are friendly and helpful. Paying on the other hand, kindly place the money on a small clear dish in front of the cashier. Do not hand the nice lady the money. The change will be given to you the same manner. Enjoy your pastries! Bonjour, French Yelpers, please tell me what they are called in french. I would love to order them by name. Merci beaucoup!

Yelp
As an American who visited Paris for the first time, I had seen Poilane enough times online and on TV. I must say I was surprised at how small this place was, making it quite crowded. But I have to say this bread was phenomenal. The sourdough was lovely as was the Pain du Poilâne.
google avatar

Hannah D.

Yelp
Wonderful stop to make if you're strolling through the neighborhood. You must try the butter cookies! They are perfect - not too sweet but just the right amount of sweet that Paris great with coffee. The butter cake is also quite delicious as well as the custard cake which also is just the right touch of sweet. The space is not big and can get tight in the afternoon while everyone is stopping by getting their goods but that's what gives it charm.
google avatar

Cassie P.

Yelp
My most favorite bread in the universe. This place is so special, so unique and so simple. I ate everything before I got back to my hotel. This is the way bread should be baked and sold. Going back tomorrow. BTW-very good shops along this same street.
google avatar

Joe G.

Yelp
The pain au chocolates and apple tarts were amazing. Only bakery in Paris that's safe for my kids who have peanut and treenut allergies. They understand the importance of food allergies unlike a lot of French people.
google avatar

Kiki H.

Yelp
Cute bakery. Another one of Ina Garten's favorites, hence our visit. The croissants were small in my opinion, but very good. Not a lot of selection of other pastries when we went in, which was a little disappointing. Employees very friendly and prices reasonable! Not sure it's a must-visit spot though for croissants, but a good spot if you're in the area.
google avatar

David S.

Yelp
This bakery has a cafe right next to it. This review is for the cafe - Comptoir Poilâne Great coffee and great food. The best French toast you can find in the area. It's a small hole in the wall, so service might be a bit slow but worth the wait. Went here with my wife every day for breakfast during our honeymoon.
google avatar

Drea G.

Yelp
Walked 32 mins to find this bakery and it was worth every step! I had their famous apple tart. The first few bites of this perfectly cooked apple tart were perfection! Still warm, with the right amount of sweet! I'll be craving this treat for months.
google avatar

Zach A.

Yelp
Croissant was fantastic. Chocolate croissant was even better! A great little bakery not too far from Lux garden.

Yelp
Some of the best and most perfect bread you will ever eat in your life. Walking into the shop, the walls are lined with beautiful perfect round loaves with that emblematic "P" written in cursive. We had just spent the entire morning at the Lourve and thought it was time to relax for a picnic. Go to any supermarket and grab yourself some brie and 5 Euro bottle of red wine. We were unable to find knives, but found a 1 Euro package of protractors and rulers. Stop by a Starbucks and ask kindly for some plastic cups. Go Poilane and get maybe half a loaf for 3 people. Make sure to get it sliced and even order more bread if you want to keep some for later. Then stumble your way over to Jardin du Luxembourg, one of the largest parks in Paris. Find yourself some seats and start enjoying. To open the bottle of wine, grab a pen and push cork down. Do it carefully and slowly unless you want to stain yourself with red wine. Open the package of rulers and protractors and MacGyver then as plastic knives to spread brie on the perfect bread from Poilane. Just sit there and enjoy the beauty of the park. Bread, cheese, wine, Paris, and a picnic. Does life get better than those few words?

Lisa A.

Yelp
It was a grey rainy, cold Paris day. We wandered around the 6th arrondissment, but with a purpose: I needed to try the Punitions (named as such because it is a punishment to have to wait until they are baked). Ever since I saw a story on CBS Sunday Morning about Lionel Poilâne (google it and watch it. trust me. Oh how I aspire to bake like he did) I needed to visit la boulangerie. Walking in I felt like I had a religious experience. I purchased two boxes of Punitions and two small bags of candies. (I did not try the breads, perhaps on another visit). The cookies are a simple butter cookie, but at the same time not so simple. They are absolute deliciousness embodied in a small, crisp, buttery cookie. The staff were very courteous and I will most definitely return whenever I'm back in Paris*. I only wish there was a Poilâne in NYC..... *There are two Paris stores and one in London. You can also order from them online.
google avatar

Kathy H.

Yelp
Oh Poilane, I wish you would open in NYC! I've always had a thing for artisan bread and bakeries, and Poilane is as close you can get to perfection. There are only 2 locations in Paris - on Rue de Cherche Midi and Boul Grenelle, so after a lovely lunch at Cuisine de Bar (see other review), I would take 2 steps down the block and get a tartelette aux pommes, brioche, or some more of the famous pain Poilane for "later". There is usually a very stern madame at the register, and a flutter of other mesdames behind the counter helping out customers or straightening various goodies. In that very Parisian way, they write the price on the paper bag, always with a pencil, and off you go to pay the madame. On these trips, I fantasize that I am a jeune fille newly arrived and living in Paris, and Poilane is my local bakery. What a lovely daydream!
google avatar

Christina C.

Yelp
Now, I did not try the bread. I guess now I have an excuse to go back. However, the boyfriend and I were told to try the croissants. Let me tell you..... words cannot describe how utterly Divine this place is. To this day, I have never come across something so fluffy, light and delicious and I'm sure that day will never come. I consider myself lucky to have been able say that I have eaten here. Since I have been, they seem to have branched out with several more locations. Which to me, only says one thing, the secret of how wonderful this place is, is clearly no longer a secret.
google avatar

Victoria J.

Yelp
We made a special trip to this neighborhood to try Poilane. When I told the boyfriend we were going to Poilane, he had already heard of it because there was a New Yorker article written about the daughter of the owners. She went to Harvard Business School to learn how to expand her parent's business. I tried a quarter loaf of the sourdough bread, a croissant, and got some marmalade for the boyfriend. You can get it sliced, but I like to slice it myself, so I kept it whole. The bread had a nice flavor, but the texture was less than desirable. It was sort of spongy--not a texture I like in my bread. The croissant was alright and had a nice flavor to that as well, but it wasn't so memorable that it made me want to return (Gontran Cherrier's butter croissant is #1 for me in that arena!). My boyfriend really liked the marmalade because the rind to jam ratio is excellent. I think it's good to try, but I wouldn't recommend coming to the neighborhood specifically for this bakery. The neighborhood has a lot of other cute shops and places to walk around though so it wouldn't be a wasted effort. Also, I did see Poilane's sliced sourdough in Monoprix (I guess that's the HBS graduate at work!), but I didn't try it since usually a product directly from the source is superior than something that is packaged, delivered, and sold off-site.
google avatar

Laura A.

Yelp
I don't think I can add to any of the other reviews here, but I just have to say that Poilane is beyond amazing. We stayed down the block during our recent trip to Paris and came here every single morning for flaky, unbelievably delicious pain au chocolat. It's something you can only really eat day of, so it's a unique delicacy of being in Paris at a certain moment in time that forces you to truly savor it. Really wonderful. Although on the flip side, once you try it, you'll be craving it regularly..not so great when you're back in the US :(
google avatar

Abby Z.

Yelp
I wanted so badly to love this bread but it just did not blow us away and did not live up to the hype. I guess that is how it goes when your Dad is an amazing bread baker. However, given the dryness of the loaf, it is the perfect surface to have for a tartine, and plays nicely with toppings. Remember though, their specialty is bread, not pastry. That said, go for the bread and not the croissants, etc. which are disappointing.
google avatar

Gloria C.

Yelp
Great tarte aux pommes Touristy Rustic I've heard to much about Poilane, but honestly, (I'm just going to say it), it's not that special. :\ The famous sourdough bread is good but not great. You can definitely taste all of the grains and sourdough leavening. Definitely worth one visit if you happen to be in Paris, but if you're here for the long haul, it's not worth visiting multiple times... and this is coming from someone who is staying literally upstairs from this location. I prefer la baguette tradition from a local artisan boulangerie. That being said, the apples tartes and apple hand pies are really good. The crusts are rich and flaky and apples are tart yet naturally sweet. I'm not a huge fan of apple, unfortunately, so this is not the best selling point for me as well!
google avatar

Ann L.

Yelp
Picked up some delicious bakery goods to take home with me. I really liked the apple tart--not too sweet and the mini raisin bread rolls. They also have raisin bread loaves, but those are a little bit more dense then the rolls (not a bad thing if you like that). Yes, the store can be chaotic. When we got there we were the only ones in the store so it wasn't that bad, but while we were placing our order a lot more people came in and it got harder to maneuver around and point to what you wanted. The lady helping me spoke some English and was able to answer my questions. You point/tell the lady helping you want you want. She bags it up, totals it, and gives the total to the cashier and you pay the cashier. I have some of their large sourdough bread sitting in my freezer and I'll update on that when I eat it! I also picked up a bunch of croissants from their location near the Eiffel Tower the morning of my flight home to take home, but unfortunately those are not nice and crispy after about 2 days.
