The Hottest New Restaurants in Austin, January 2025

"One of Mexico City’s essential taquerias expanded into the U.S. for the first time and decided to open in Central East Austin in early September. The restaurant is all about coastal Mexican dishes and seafood, including tacos made with shrimp longanisa and pork rinds; burritos stuffed with smoked swordfish and octopus; and Tostitos served with Sinaloan-styled ceviche. There are indoor and outdoor dine-in services." - Brittany Britto Garley, Nadia Chaudhury

Con Vista Al Mar - Review - East Austin - Austin - The Infatuation

"Con Vista al Mar looks and feels like the type of casual, street-side seafood spot you’d find in CDMX. All of the spirits are produced in Mexico, and the tables and decorations are imported. But if you’re hoping to relive your last trip to Mexico City that you got with a last-minute Aeroméxico ticket, you’re better off heading to the airport and paying for a flight. Con Vista al Mar's quality is too spotty to justify its expensive prices. Dishes often arrive underseasoned or oversalted, and the seafood tastes like yesterday's catch, which is a bummer because so much of Con Vista's menu is served raw or lightly cured in lime juice. Ceviches, aguachiles, and raw oysters are the big draw here, but the saving graces mostly come from the hot side of the menu. Order a michelada and some deep-fried smoked fish tacos to enjoy on the pleasant patio overlooking East 7th Street, but if you’re looking for great Mexican seafood, head to El Marisquero for something casual, or Este for a nicer sit-down meal. Food Rundown photo credit: Nicolai McCrary Margarita Clásica The classic margarita is well-made, if a bit tiny. Don’t be surprised if you’re ready for a second round after a few quick sips. Try the michelada clásica instead. It will last longer, and it provides a salty, spicy addition to the meal. photo credit: Nicolai McCrary Tuna Tostada This comes topped with a lot of shaved bonito that dances around and makes the whole thing fun to look at. It’s heavy on the mayo, but overall not a bad tuna tostada. photo credit: Nicolai McCrary Burnt Habanero Aguachile We like that Con Vista didn’t hold back here—this dish is spicy. Unfortunately, it’s also so salty that it’s difficult to eat more than a few pieces without feeling like you just inhaled half of the ocean along with your shrimp. photo credit: Nicolai McCrary Costeño Ceviche At nearly $30, this is a big portion of ceviche that requires at least three or four people to take down. The mix of shrimp, octopus, calamari, and scallops is well-seasoned, but the overcooked poached shrimp make for an unpleasant combination of textures with the whole, raw shrimp served in the same dish. photo credit: Nicolai McCrary TJ Essentially a quesadilla, the TJ is a pile of smoked fish and cheese served between two griddled flour tortillas. The fish has a great texture and adds a nice smokiness to the creamy menonita cheese. And the pineapple pico inside offers a bit of sweetness and spice. Get one of these to share. photo credit: Nicolai McCrary Oysters Zarandeado At over a dozen pieces per order, Con Vista is generous with its portion of Gulf oysters. But they’re grilled until they’re lukewarm, and the dollop of salsa macha butter on top needs more salt to really shine." - Nicolai McCrary

Google
Amazing Mexican seafood restaurant in East Austin, originally from Mexico City! They have a huge menu of ceviches, aguachiles, tacos, mariscos, sopes, tostados all with really fresh seafood bursting with tons of flavor. The vibe inside is great and the owners and servers couldn’t be nicer! The prices are also very reasonable for the quality. Pictured is the calamari sope and cachorra tostada loaded with seafood. Both were excellent but the cachorra was amazing! The marshmallow flan for desert was also great.

Absolutely delicious, authentic mariscos! Flavors were great and it was well priced. I loved their aguachile in particular. Chill atmosphere to hang out and have drinks and tasty ceviche. Service was attentive and friendly. Highly recommend.

I was drawn in by the vibe and decor as soon as I walked through the door. Sometimes you just want a laid-back dinner with great flavor, and this was exactly that. We ordered the Mexican Negroni, Charro Mexican Pilsner, fresh local oysters, the Costeño Ceviche, and a Taco Chilango. My boyfriend and I both agreed that the entire experience couldn’t have been better. The drinks paired beautifully with the food, especially the Negroni. As a big seafood girl, I appreciated that the oysters were local and super fresh. The garnish they provide to top the oysters added a punch of flavor I didn’t even know I was missing. I’ve had a lot of ceviche in my life, and the Costeño was top tier. It had the perfect blend of shrimp, octopus, and scallops with avocado and other crisp, fresh veggies. My taco was a 10 out of 10. It was bigger than a standard taco and packed with flavor. I picked it because it came with pork rinds, which I love, and it absolutely delivered. The staff were so friendly and attentive. I felt genuinely comfortable the whole time and had the best dinner. We’re always on the East Side, so Con Vista Al Mar is officially going on our list for nights when we’re bar hopping or walking around the neighborhood.

We had an incredible experience at Con Vista al Mar in Austin! Everything we ordered was delicious. We started with the Micheladas and margaritas, both of which were super refreshing and perfectly balanced. The Taco Ensenada was crispy and full of flavor, while the burnt habanero aguachiles were bold, spicy, and packed a punch in the best way. The calamari guacamole was a creative and tasty twist, combining creamy and crunchy textures that were addictive. The atmosphere is laid-back but stylish, and the staff was friendly and attentive. Highly recommend this place for seafood lovers or anyone looking for something vibrant and flavorful in Austin. Will definitely be back!

We wanted to try a little of everything, reading the bad reviews steered us in this direction. The server was super attentive and everything I would expect from a Latino/Mexican restaurant. Definitely gave Cancun/Yucatan vibes. (Not hotel zone, estilo pueblo) I ordered a ranch water (perfectly made), and my buddy ordered the michelada with the Mexican Sake and I was absolutely jealously. So, I too had one; the smokey mezcal, tangy full flavored Clamato and the sake chaser elevated it, next level status 10/10 would do it again. We ordered the calamari sope and buttery oysters to start. The sope was stacked with ring calamari and had believe a salsa macha drizzle and was topped with pickled onions. Huge portion and the salsa tied in all flavors. Sope was made from scratch and perfectly crispy. The oysters came out, they were raw with a warm butter and salsa topping. This tantalizing tastebud experience was savory, earthy and a must!! 10 oysters for $25 not too bad. We ended with some chilango taco which was shrimp and chicharrón, that came with chips and guacamole. That was tasty, loaded with shrimp and all the textures came together nicely. Tortillas were homemade and full of flavor. Over all 10/10 would recommend and do again.

Stumbled upon a true Austin treasure with the most incredible Mezcalitas and food! This place is a must visit that I didn’t realize I was missing out on. I went with a group of friends and we opted for the patio seating. Right from the start, the service was impeccable, 10/10. We each ordered something unique to sample a variety of dishes and were all blown away. The Mezcalitas? Hands down the best I’ve ever had in Austin(and I’m a huge mezcal margarita enthusiast). They craft their own special in-house salt that pairs perfectly with the drinks. I went for the Classic Aguachili, loaded with fresh flavors and just the right kick of spice. I also sampled a couple of tacos: the Asenda and the I Know The Chef...still dreaming about them! We also got the guacamole calamari, which sounded interesting, but I’m so glad we ordered it, such an amazing surprise! Mahi Mahi Ceviche was another standout. It was absolutely delicious! I can’t believe it took me this long to discover this spot! It’s officially one of my top picks in Austin.

We decided to check out Con Vista and it surpassed our expectations, everything was super fresh and delicious, the habanero aguachile was amazing. My husband is from Mexico and always on the hunt for mariscos and we have tried everything. We also loved the tostadona, the mahi mahi ceviche and the quesabirria. Mescalitas and margs on point as well. We will return to try more!

Google
Love this place. 3rd time here for lunch. Bartender on Tuesday is so friendly and lets me practice my broken Spanish with her . I love the grilled octopus 🐙 it’s amazing! This time I got their Acapulco Taco and Guava Margarita. Make sure to ask for the Habanero charcoal sauce in the back if you really love spicy! 🥵 like I’m not kidding… if you’re into Tabasco sauce and think that’s spicy , then this sauce isn’t for you.

Yelp
Amazing Mexican Pacific Coast cuisine for sure a new hidden gem!!! even the bartenders are amazing as well!!! They have indoor and outdoor seating.

Yelp
Noticed this restaurant when driving down E. 7th street one day. This is the 4th? Restaurant that's been in this space in the past 5-10 years. Though I'm not surprised the vegan burger place that used to be here closed down. Time will tell if this place will survive. Came here at 6:45p on a Wednesday. Only a couple tables inside, never got much busier than that. There were people sitting out on the patio though. As the name implies, Con Vista Al Mar is primarily seafood. For the ceviches, it was like 90% shrimp. Came here with one other person. We shared the calamari on guac which was pretty tasty, though the calamari could've used some more salt and or lime. No salt on the table, though this is pretty typical in restaurants these days. We ordered our entrees too soon, as the ceviche we ordered as our entrees came out a minute after we got the calamari and guac. But the ceviche is likely already made, since it needs to be marinating for a good while. I got the Mazatlan ceviche, and my dining companion got the Aguachilies. Both were good, the ceviche I got what not what I was expecting presentation-wise. The fish was finely chopped up. It was good, just very different than what I'm used to. And it was spicy! As was the Aguachiles. I think overall the spice level was good. I like spicy food, and I'm glad the food doesn't tone down the spiciness to carer to the gringos. It didn't help that I got a Michelada to drink, which was tasty, but also spicy. So the only relief I got from the spiciness were the tortilla chips served with the ceviche. My one complaint about the chips is that they got stale halfway into the meal. Portion-wise, for both ceviches, it was a lot more food that what I was expecting. I could barely finish my ceviche. Price-wise, it's what you have to expect from Austin restaurants these days that aren't super high-end. All the ceviche dishes were around the $25 range. Items like the tostadas and tacos were cheaper, though I wonder if you'd want to get two tacos to get enough food to eat. Because there weren't any other tables close to us, we couldn't see what the food that other diners were getting looked like. Everything else was moderately priced. We wanted to try the flan for dessert, but they didn't have any of it ready to be served yet. :( All in all the food was pretty good,. It's nice to have a Mexican seafood-forward restaurant like this, that isn't outrageously expensive, such as restaurants like Este. hopefully it will get more popular soon or it won't survive. Would come back again.

Yelp
Recently went to Con Vista Al Mar for dinner because my boyfriend really wanted to try the Tostilocos - which he said was great and they were very generous with the amount of ceviche provided. I got 2 fried fish tacos, but definitely could have ordered one because they packed the tacos - almost wish I had a bigger tortilla. The classic margarita was so strong that I couldn't finish it. Boyfriend ordered the frozen guava margarita which was BOMB.

Yelp
This is officially my new fave spot in town. The food was so delicious here. My favorites were the octopus with the guacamole and tortillas plus the soft shell crab taco. Both were so good I couldn't stop eating. We also got the fish tacos - both grilled and fried - and those were good too. The seafood ceviche was very good too. For dessert we tried the strawberries with cream and that was unique and satisfying.

Yelp
Happy to update if / when they get it together, but went last night with my family. No reso, but got a spot in the corner of the patio. Unfortunately, we sat there for 15 minutes and no one came by, not even waters. Overheard the table across from us say, as we walked by and out, "well sorry guys I thought this place was going to be good." They were there before us and didn't see a waiter check their table either. No food, no drinks too. No good. We left and went to El Chile *shrug*

Yelp
I enjoy the aesthetics, but the food and drinks are mid. The fried seafood has a very thick batter with very little seafood inside. The avocado sauce didn't taste very fresh and the tortilla chips were bland. The tuna tostada had too much going on flavor wise and the tortilla on the fish taco isn't homemade. The best food item we ordered was the tostilocos.

Caroline F.

Yelp
Service was really terrible. Waited 45 mins for drinks (2 of which were beers) and got all our shared plate items at once, before half of the drinks were delivered. Food was good but not worth the overall experience. Seems like a food truck that's moved into a retail space and the team has no idea how to run a restaurant.

Yelp
Stumbled upon this place while we were visiting for ACL Festival. So glad we did , they did not have a lot of the menu items since they just opened 20 days ago but what we tried would definitely bring us back ! We normally can handle xxxSpicy but the Burnt Habanero Agua Chile was super spicy but we loved it! Everything had a perfect combination of citrus and freshness. Would definitely be coming back. Would recommend as a great hangover remedy. The staff was super nice ! Plenty of parking spaces. Ambience is nice homey feel with great tunes.

Kayla S.

Yelp
Had a really delicious patio dinner here and can't wait to come back for other options on their extensive menu. In contrast to other reviews, we found prices to be reasonable for the very large portions. All the fresh options were truly fresh and expertly prepared (no veins in the shrimp). We especially enjoyed the shrimp aguachile, tuna tostada, shrimp longanisa taco, and the tostilocos. The ceviche with the tostilocos was authentically spicy. Also loved the guava frozen margs!

Yelp
The food was disappointing and overpriced. The raw shrimp on my tostadas was not deveined, which is unacceptable for a $20 dish. The corn tortillas were stale, and the chicharrones in the shrimp sausage taco were also stale. For $14, I'd expect handmade flour tortillas, but instead, they were cheap, store-bought. The tuna tostada lacked flavor, and the battered fish tacos were mostly breading with very little fish. The burnt agua chile habanero was horrible did not execute well tasted super salty and pure charcoal we had to return it. Unfortunately, I could go on. Drinks were also extremely overpriced with a tiny glass (I believe 6oz glass) that's filled with ice to the brim.

Yelp
This place has only been open about a month and it is definitely worth a try. The food was well balanced, fresh, and flavorful. The service was top notch. The drinks were on point. Looking forward to coming back again!

Linda J.

Yelp
Fairly expensive, marginal food and drink. The wine served had turned, but even with a new bottle, at $12 a glass, it was marginal. The $12 margarita was ok but really small. Chips were stale. The $14 taco (on a stale tortilla) was full of tough, raw shrimp. The shrimp soup was OK. It took me 15 minutes to get the QR code menu to work. Too bad. This restaurant is right around the corner from my house. I hope it gets better, but I bet it will just close.

Conner E.

Yelp
Yikes, this was one of the worst dining experiences I've had in Austin in a while. We had a party of four on Friday night. At first glance, the restaurant is pretty and well decorated, we sat on the patio which was nice. We sat down and it took over 15 minutes for any waiter or waitress to come over to our table. We ordered a couple of classic margaritas and two appetizers, chips and guacamole as well the "seafood tortilla and chips." It took an embarrassing amount of time for them to deliver a couple of margaritas and some chips and dip. The guacamole was covered with some fried calamari which lacked really any flavor, but the guacamole was pretty good. The seafood tortilla and chips appetizer was 75% fried batter and 25% actual seafood. For entrees, we got the quesabirria which was really tasty. We also got a couple of assorted tacos which were super disappointing. They were overpriced for some store-bought tortillas and various meats with zero seasoning, sprinkled with some cilantro. Overall, we were there for over an hour and a half for some margaritas and overpriced tacos. I don't know if it was an off night or what, but the service was slow, the kitchen was slower, and $200 for store-bought tortilla chips and store-bought tortillas with some fried batter wasn't what I had mind.
