The Country Kitchen Review - Malibu - Los Angeles - The Infatuation

"The post-surf breakfast burrito is basically a Malibu way of life, and Country Kitchen is where the locals get theirs. This place is right on PCH, with a walk-up window, an awkward parking lot, a handful of seats, and a giant menu of burgers and sandwiches—but ordering anything besides the breakfast burrito would be a mistake. It’s simple—with a choice of meat (get the bacon), egg, hash brown, cheese, and salsa—and not too filling, and if you show up in a wetsuit, you can pretend you actually know how to surf." - Kat Hong

"COVID-19 Update: Open for pickup and delivery. Recently, there’s been a lot of speculation about the state of The Country Kitchen’s lease, but somehow the teeny hole-in-the wall burrito/burger joint persevered. Taking up the same sliver of a small strip mall across the PCH from the water since the early ‘70s, it’s the go-to for post-surf session bacon-egg-and-potato breakfast burritos and chili-cheese burgers. There’s nothing fancy about the execution—though it’s always delicious and wallet-friendly—and the same can be said of the picnic-table seating, which is great when you’ve wandered in off the beach (i.e. no shoes or shirts required). COVID-19 Disclaimer: We are working hard to keep our listings as up to date as possible (deliveries, outdoor dining, etc.), but given the evolving nature of local COVID-19 restrictions, we recommend double-checking the information in this guide with any business you plan on visiting. Malibu Kitchen Review - Los Angeles - The Infatuation

"Malibu Kitchen is a deli owned by a New Yorker in the heart of the Country Mart. Step inside, and be transported to Long Island in the best of ways - the owner might curtly ask you to hurry up or slow down, the chip and beverage options are endless, and the made-to-order sandwiches are the best in Malibu - and way better (and are made faster) than the ones from John’s Garden across the way. The pulled pork on ciabatta outshines what we’ve had at most BBQ spots, but even if you go with turkey, a reuben, or an assortment of sides from the deli case, you’ll be set for your day at the beach or quick lunch afterwards." - Arden Shore

Google
Ordering. Breakfast burrito from TCK will ruin your life. You’ll never be able to stop thinking about them. You’ll dream about them. If you get one with a side of green salsa and the spicy aioli, forget it. You’re addicted for life. This place is the best spot in Malibu.

Google
Very good breakfast burritos...however, parking sucks. And pray that the pigeons don't crap on you.

Google
It’s open!! As good as ever. Breakfast burrito with sausage and light potato 🤌

Google
This place is a CLASSIC! Been going for years and they survived the malibu and palisades fires. The orders can take a few minutes, so it's good to call it in ahead of time. I've always gone early mornings to beat the crowds. But great breakfast burritos and sandwiches.

Google
This is a great spot to stop before or after going to the beach or on a ride. Great food. Outdoor seating with n ocean view.

Google
Egg, cheese and potato burrito with some add ons is where it's at. The crunch of the tots, the perfectly grilled onions and jalapenos, the heat of the latter plus green salsa is perfection. Ordered online, ate on their tables, filled me up for my travels back to nyc (stuffed).

Jeff McLean

Google
Good bf burrito all day. Stop on your way to the beach but anticipate a wait, everything cooked to order and there usually a line. Hang for local kids in groups and multiple little shops for wife or GF

John Nichols

Google
Efficient roadside restaurant off of the Pacific Coast Highway. We stopped for breakfast burritos. It’s exactly the right vibe for what it is. Three of us got chorizo. One got carnitas and another got sausage. All were delicious. Well sized, but not too much or overwhelming. The tortillas were perfect. Excellent salsa verde. Would highly recommend.

Yelp
The Country Kitchen is a small, unassuming breakfast joint located right off PCH. But don't let appearances fool you because this place is big in taste and value. They offer a good selection of breakfast burritos, burgers, and coffee/tea. My order for one sausage, bacon, potato, egg, and cheese burrito took a fair amount of time, but they were quite busy. The burrito was simply one of the most well-made, filling, and delicious handheld breakfasts I ever had. Each ingredient seemed to have been crafted with a little extra TLC, which made all the difference. The green salsa was flavorful and had a nice kick to it. Just make sure to ask for it if they forget to give you a serving with your burrito! Please note that the dining area is strictly outdoors and seating/parking is limited. There is decent parking on PCH and a few spots in the little strip mall where the establishment is located, however. Bottom line: If you're looking for a quick and convenient morning/afternoon bite in the beautiful Cali sun, this place is it! Thank you Country Kitchen! Will be back again if I'm in the area.

Yelp
This is one of the few remaining fast food options, and really one of the only ones in central East Malibu. I wouldn't say it's the highest quality, but if you're hungry and want a fast bite eaten in a parking lot or to go, this is your spot. I will say that there is a local debate over breakfast burritos: country kitchen or Lily's (next to The pavilions in Western Malibu). I am a lily's fan. I don't like a lot of potatoes in my breakfast burrito, which is exactly what you get with country kitchen. But that is a personal preference. Their burgers are completely ho-hum, honestly in all the years I've lived here, it's one of the last places I think of going unless I need to pick up a large order of breakfast burritos for an event. And then I make the decision based on whether it's eastern Malibu (country kitchen), Central Malibu (Howdy's), or Western Malibu (lily's)

Yelp
Worst customer service food nasty employees bad actitud duty tables and that take forever to serve food and cold

Yelp
Great little place to grab a great breakfast burrito. Fit the bill for us . . . in a hurry, quick in, quick out, but fresh. It's not much to look at nor for the expected experience when pulling into the drive, but they'll surprise you. Only has a few benches / tables outside to sit, but again, if looking for something fast, fresh and good while on the run, this is your place.
google avatar

Yelp
This is pretty much the perfect breakfast burrito. This is up there with Wake and Late for the best I've had, but about $5 cheaper. The bacon was quality, potato was crispy and adding avocado was a great move. The ingredients tasted really fresh. The salsa was like regular mild salsa verde but with an extra kick that was welcomed. The fresh OJ was delicious as well. Service was fairly quick but ordering ahead would help avoid the wait when there's a rush. This place seems like the perfect spot after a surf, hike or morning at the beach. I will definitely have to grab a burger next!
google avatar

Chad J.

Yelp
One of the best places for breakfast burritos in Malibu! I suggest ordering online before you head up PCH so it's ready by the time you get there as it can get busy in the later morning hours. Such a great way to start your beach day
google avatar

Isabella M.

Yelp
When you stop at country kitchen to grab some breakfast burritos before hitting the beach, get all the way to the beach, trek down to the sand with all your stuff and open up the brown bag and realize your vegetarian burritos have every type of meat in them. Sad!!!!!!!!! Literally ruined our morning. We said no meat multiple times. Next.

Yelp
Solid hole-in-the wall breakfast burrito spot. The ingredients are fresh, well layered, and most importantly, tasty. Well priced relative to others in the LA area. The burrito itself is simple. I would have appreciated a more stacked burrito and more ingredient options. I eat a lot, and wasn't quite full when I finished my burrito. From a quality standpoint, no complaints. Very tasty. I just wanted more quantity and diversity inside my tortilla. Others might appreciate the fact that Country Kitchen sticks to the basics (and does the basics very well). Overall, a very good option for your breakfast burrito cravings in the LA/Malibu area.
google avatar

Kim N.

Yelp
Solid little hole in the wall for a hearty, piping hot, breakfast burrito! We had the bacon, sausage, potato and egg burrito. It was a solid size and the cooker perfectly with fluffy eggs and crispy potatoes. The sausage was whole and I wish it was sliced up for more even distribution but everything else was layered well. We had "hot" verde salsa on the side, it was just the right amount of kick but not spicy. Definitely recommend this addition!

Yelp
Wow. Best burrito I've had in so long ... Came here after a hike with friends and we all absolutely loved it!! I got a lunch burrito w avocado, no meat. My friend got asada lunch burrito and others got the chorizo breakfast burrito. All of us agreed that they were 10/10. We loved the fries and horchata too. Wow. We sat out front and had a cute table with a view of pch. Thank you for the bomb food!!
google avatar

Yelp
Got a bacon, egg, cheese and potato burrito recently. Service was pleasant and quick. Burrito is tasty and a good size, at least for me. It wasn't packed but I could imagine that parking can get tricky here during peak hours. There are several businesses here including a post office and the lot size is a bit cramped. If you want extra sauce you need to pay a nominal fee of fifty cents which seems fair. All in all a great experience.

Yelp
Really great menu selection for both breakfast and lunch ! Food was fantastic but it took a very long time to be ready. This isn't something that would stop me from going back because the food and selection was just too great.

Yelp
came here after hiking in malibu, and it didn't disappoint !! we got 2 of the sausage, egg, & cheese breakfast burritos but the menu is extensive ~ burritos, sandwiches, burgers, salads, etc. you name it, and they probably have it. overall, the food was solid but nothing too crazy. the salsa that comes with it is really what makes the burrito shine. however, it wasn't as filling as i expected it to be. we went around 4pm on a sunday and were 1 of 2 people there, so there's no wait !! there's a small parking lot to the right of the shop. you can sit on one of the few tables they have and enjoy your food !!

Susana S.

Yelp
Delish! Good portions. Nice old school food, cash only. Waitstaff was nice too! I'd go again
google avatar

Lilly N.

Yelp
Love the breakfast burritos at this spot. I usually always get the bacon or sausage one but I tried the Al pastor one this time- it was good but a little dry and I would stick with bacon next time. All the burrito ingredients are evenly dispersed and the burrito comes very hot every-time which is nice. I came on a Sunday and they closed around 4:45 instead of 5 like it's listed online so a few people got turned away- if you're stopping by close to closing time I would call first.
google avatar

Julie D.

Yelp
Cute spot. My friend loves this place. She swears it's her favorite breakfast joint in the area. We dropped in to fuel up for our drive up to San Francisco. I got the carnitas breakfast burrito sans cheese since your girl is lactose intolerant. The green salsa they provided had just the right amount of kick. I put a little bit with every bite. I finished mine so quickly. Even with all the steam still coming out with every bite. I'm looking forward to coming back so I can try the lunch version of the burrito.

Yelp
The Country Kitchen was a nice little hole in the wall spot that I stumbled upon and couldn't have been happier with my meal. The avocado bacon cheese burger was massive and was very tasty ! I'd happily go back for the great service and awesome food.

Yelp
Headed up PCH this place was recommended for a tasty selection of breakfast burritos and breakfast sandwiches. There are some tables outside only. There is no covered dining. I opted for the basic potato egg and cheese with salsa verde. I was told by a local in line this was the best salsa with a nice kick. I was impressed to get an incredibly hot well sealed burrito that would have traveled well. Portion was substantial and a perfect base to start the day. The other burrito was the basic with bacon and a red salsa on the side. Super delicious but I'm so happy to have made the correct salsa choice for me. Breakfast in Malibu can get pricey for sure. These two gems were right at $20. We had already had our coffee fix and instead used our hydro flasks. Certainly easy to see why it's a favorite among the Pepperdine crowd, construction workers, and the nice local in line for a post workout indulgence. This is a must option when in the area and on the move and the limited fast food is not your thing. I always appreciate fast food like this freshly prepared.

Brian C.

Yelp
If I could give it 0 Stars I would. Not even because the food is good would I give it a good review, the customer service is the worst service I've ever had in Malibu. You know that feeling you get when you're about to ask someone for a favor ? That's what it feels like here. These people act as if you're asking them to let u borrow money or donate food it seems like it bothers them to say "thank you" or "have a goood day" when u make a phone order they just hang up on you after placing your order.no type of customer service at all.

Rose M.

Yelp
I only got french fries but they were really really good!! Crispy and soft. It seems to have a constant stream of people, so it must be popular. Service was really fast. Cool little place to pull over and get a snack. Thank you for the fries!
google avatar

Jerry S.

Yelp
Guy behind the counter needs a reality check on his attitude towards everyday and new customers. Very unprofessional. Couldn't even respond to me when i greeted him. When I received the burrito, he didn't even respond back when i said "thank you, have a great day." When i realize there is no sauce, i ask for the red sauce. He literally didn't respond and picked up the phone. After asking again, he said 50 cents. After telling him, i've received red sauce for free in my multiple and multiple purchases prior. He held his ground & stated its 50 cents for an extra sauce. I than ask how can i pay for an extra sauce when i didn't even receive one in the first place. He sighed and walked to grab me my sauce. Just go to Lily's next to Pavilions.
google avatar

Adam C.

Yelp
Decent breakfast burrito, will definitely leave you full but light on ingredients. Takes a long time to get, salsas are okay. Overall just an okay spot.

Kip M.

Yelp
Great hamburger and breakfast burrito. Order by phone to avoid the line. Friendly staff. Ben enjoying this place for years
google avatar

Rachel M.

Yelp
The Country Kitchen has my favorite 5 star bacon breakfast burrito. The food is made to order. The burrito comes out hot so expect to wait a bit for your food especially when it's busy. The burrito is well constructed with a layer of the ingredients of listed on bacon, egg, cheese, potato, and avocado (add-on) just about in every single bite. It's proportion perfection. My main critique is that I don't love the salsa. You can choose between hot or mild, but both the green or red salsas taste mild and straight out of a jar to me. However, the burrito is so good that I don't need to add salsa like I do with other breakfast burritos. The menu includes other breakfast and lunch favorites, but I haven't tried anything else. The customers include a combination of locals, beach goers, and out of towners. It's a small place that always seemed to catch my eye when my husband and I were on PCH, and it's become one of my favorite spots when I go the beach.
google avatar

Jason C.

Yelp
5 stars must be contextualized. This is a food stand; a walk up window with a kitchen behind it. Seating is limited, outside, in a lot, but pleasant given it is Malibu. As food stands go, this one is excellent. The food is consistently fresh and delicious. The menu is broad and yet quality is consistent. Service is prompt, polite, and no nonsense. The only thing making me consider lower than 5 stars is the setting, but 4 stars would by a lowball. Which brings me back to context. For a food stand, country kitchen is firing on all cylinders.
google avatar

Noelle K.

Yelp
You can never go wrong with a breakfast burrito from Country Kitchen. It's a Malibu/LA staple, and rightfully so. I think they use mashed tater tots in the burritos so there's a delicious crisp to the burritos, and they sauces they have are sooo good. Order at the outdoor window and wait a few minutes for your food. You won't be disappointed
google avatar

Lindsay L.

Yelp
Loved being able to order ahead online! It was hot and ready at the correct time! Staff wasn't overly friendly but food was good! I'm not used to lettuce and tomato on my breakfast sandwich but it was ok. I loved the carnitas breakfast burrito!
google avatar

Alexander M.

Yelp
This place rules. I have been many times and everything is great. The tuna melt comes to mind as being especially good. It's a great hang out spot too. Service is always friendly and quick.
google avatar

Yelp
food 9/10 service 2/10 guy seems moody talks way too fast can't understand shit!!! this is second day i try yesterday i greeted him and and walked to back didn't even greet me. i was being nice, so i walked away. so i tried again walks to the back when he sees me stays there for like 3 min. i wasn't gonna write a review but then i ask for red hot sauce and he give me tomato sauce hahah it was to go lol so this guy though we pulled a smart one but i was eating in my car. i go to him and he says this is our red sauce and i'm like this is tomato sauce like for spaghetti. fyi just say you don't have red sauce. and honestly guys should be cooking away from people learn to be welcoming make eye contact. you are causing bad business and loosing customers i rather drive 30 and pay extra if ima get good customer service. even 7-eleven greet me without me saying anything
google avatar

Kara C.

Yelp
The best breakfast burrito I've ever had in my life. This is a literal hole in the wall but the food is fantastic. Me and my husband routinely reminisce about these burritos and we went there almost 10 years ago. It sounds like they're still doing well, I would recommend to anyone in the area.

Jacob M.

Yelp
Great breakfast burritos! Order ahead of time since there isn't a lot of seating ,and they make the food fresh. 10/10. Thank you!
google avatar

Ryan J.

Yelp
Pretty neat little spot that does have good burritos specifically breakfast burritos. They are also not massive, thus not a gut bomb! Price ranges from about 8-10 bucks for one so not too bad price wise either. Staff was nice and quick as well. Of note there is only outdoor seating so it's more of a dip in and grab a bite and eat at one of their three outdoor tables or trek down the road a little bit and hang out by the beach. I'll for sure make my way back here next time I'm in the area and wanting a burrito/breakfast burrito.

Jared W.

Yelp
Top tier breakfast burrito. I got the bacon, sausage, egg, potato and cheese and it was phenomenal. The potatoes were crispy and the whole pieces of bacon were a nice touch. I thought the burrito was sized appropriately for the price, was not overly greasy and was perfectly filling without being too much.

Darcy M.

Yelp
Stopped by for a mid morning burrito and it was delicious! The service was quick and the burrito was excellent.
google avatar

Venice S.

Yelp
The breakfast burritos are bomb but the BB & Bacon burger might just be the best burger in all of LA. Easily my favorite post surf spot for a refueling.

Navid M.

Yelp
Guy taking orders is a weirdo - no other way to put it. Asked him simple questions about the food and did not even care to answer. Also, asked him if I can have my egg burrito with egg whites, no yolk. Later realized he put in an extra charge for egg whites for an egg burrito. Smart guy, but not smart enough to keep customers
google avatar

Todd M.

Yelp
Average type food, Way overpriced probably because they're in Malibu. The guy at the counter was a little rude had attitude would not recommend this place.
google avatar

Phillip Z.

Yelp
The Country Kitchen doesn't look like much from the outside. This hole-in-the wall burrito and burger joint typically has a long line for a good reason -- it's delicious breakfast burrito. I suggest getting their popular egg, bacon and cheese burrito, adding avocado for the extra kick. This roadside stand is polar opposite to all the glitz and glam of Malibu. But if you're looking for something that's delicious and inexpensive, you've found your spot. The Country Kitchen is located alongside the Pacific Coast Highway and across from the beach, making it a popular spot for surfers. During non-pandemic times, there is picnic bench seating available out front. We ended up just eating our burrito on the rooftop of our car. Clearly, this isn't a meal at Nobu Malibu!
google avatar

Tyler P.

Yelp
Good food! It's pricey but the portions are fair. Service is good, seated immediately except for weekend mornings it's packed! Has a real coffee shop vibe going on. It would have gotten 5 stars if it wasn't so expensive! But what isn't these days!
google avatar

skye d.

Yelp
Great hole in the wall, all of their food is really good. Make sure you pick up salt, mustard, salsa, and ketchup to make your food how you like it. The tuna melt and the chicken melt are great but I always add mustard. I like the way they don't add it for you, they leave it to you to add the salt and mustard as you like it. Same with the fries, they are not very salty so I add more salt. They have fresh orange juice on the weekends.

Sophie K.

Yelp
Best of everything for visitors and locals! Best hamburgers in Malibu! Never too long of a wait and lots of good fresh ingredients!
google avatar

Edith S.

Yelp
Lovely little while in the wall. The place wasn't open yet and there was already a little line. We got the breakfast burrito with pastrami and it was amazing. Took it to go and sat on the beach. MUST TRY BURRitos!!
google avatar

Keiran L.

Yelp
Best breakfast burrito in the world. Friendly and awesome staff. Family establishment. There are only two restaurants in California that I feel loyalty to and would go out of my way to support. One is In-N-Out Burger, the other is Country Kitchen. That should tell you all you need to know.
google avatar

Karina F.

Yelp
Good little place to stop by and grab a nice lunch meal in Malibu on highway 1. It was good food. Fee seating options. But grab and go good option.
google avatar

Bradford B.

Yelp
Great walk up counter and food selection. All burritos are very hearty and delicious...a perfect meal to eat at the beach, in the car or just hang around out front and watch the PCH traffic whiz by. This place is outstanding and a real SOCAL classic.
google avatar

Sabrina S.

Yelp
Yes. All I have to say, is yes. It's worth it, it's not expensive, and you get a burger or sandwich the size of your freaking head. Tater tots and fries were amazingly seasoned. I was shocked bc we just stopped by and took a chance!!! And I 10/10 recommend & their lemonade was so fresh I cannot wait to go back Do yourself a favor and try them out!!!
google avatar

Sarah M.

Yelp
Hole in the wall serving the best breakfast burritos in Malibu. Staff is friendly. So good we went here twice over our weekend in Malibu.
google avatar

Kealy K.

Yelp
The Country Kitchen breakfast burrito is one of the best breakfast burritos I've ever had. This place might not seem like much from the outside, but the little hut on the side of the PCH is a must try. My favorite burrito is the bacon potato egg and cheese with salsa & avocado, but you can't really go wrong with any of the breakfast burritos here. I've heard the burgers are also incredible. The seating area is not open right now because of covid, but I highly recommend grabbing one of these burritos to go and having it on the beach in Malibu. The perfect way to start any day!
google avatar

Elaine C.

Yelp
We got the bacon, potato, egg and cheese breakfast burrito and it was super filling for two people. Not gonna lie, I'm not sure what makes a breakfast burrito stand out because the ones I've had all kind of taste the same. This one didn't disappoint, I enjoy breakfast burritos and if you want to go with a safe option, I'd go with this. Ordering was simple, you order at the front and you get a number. The order came out really fast. There were a couple tables and chairs outside but in somewhat close proximity (since its based in a parking lot), so not the best for COVID right now, but still its nice to have somewhere to sit while you're waiting for your food. They do have a bathroom! It's on the side of the building. Parking wasn't too bad. There were plenty of spaces when we went.
