The Best Restaurants in Boulder, Colorado | Eater Denver

"Here’s the hottest table in town right now. This upscale Mexican sensation shares with its Denver sibling — the Michelin-starred Alma Fonda Fina — a deeply heartfelt yet highly stylish approach to its menu, which ranges from elegant crudos like the hamachi aguachile with orange oil to tacos on handmade tortillas to soulful entrées such as the Sakura pork-shank carnitas with frijoles charros, salsa de árbol, and jalapeño escabeche. The bar nimbly follows the open kitchen’s lead with vibrant Sweet Corn or Avocado Margaritas and wines from Baja California." - Ruth Tobias

The Hottest Restaurants in Denver Right Now, Summer 2024

"Just eight months after opening Alma Fonda Fina in LoHi to thunderous applause (it’s since earned a spot on among the 38 Essential Restaurants in Denver), Johnny Curiel has brought his deeply personal yet polished brand of Mexican cuisine to downtown Boulder: Though the menu largely differs from that of Alma, his style is unmistakable in dishes like tostadas with shaved scallops, chicatana mayonnaise, and date salsa macha; flautas di birria with frijoles puercos; and hongos al ajillo in mole verde pipián. The former Arcana space, meanwhile, has much more room than Cozobi’s sibling does to house an extensive selection of agave spirits, whether served neat or in cocktails such as the Sweet Corn Margarita." - Ruth Tobias, Eater Staff

We had an incredible experience at Cozobi Fonda Fina! From the moment we walked in, the atmosphere was warm and welcoming. Tyler, our server, was attentive, friendly, and made great recommendations throughout our meal. Mickayla, the General Manager, checked in on us personally and made us feel truly valued. The restaurant itself is beautifully designed with a spotless open kitchen that adds to the charm. Chris, the Chef de Cuisine, absolutely blew us away — every dish was flavorful, fresh, and beautifully presented. Can’t wait to come back!

We were able to grab a seat at the bar for a spontaneous anniversary dinner. Food was excellent. Highly recommend the sweet potato and chicken mole, but everything was very tasty. Solid service and an easy non-fussy atmosphere.

Cozobi Fonda Fina might have just served me the best meal I’ve ever had. Every single thing we ordered was phenomenal—thoughtfully prepared, bold in flavor, and genuinely exciting to eat. The standout for me was the Camote Asado, a sweet potato dish that somehow managed to be both rich and bright. Whatever salsa and fennel cheese combo they put on top made it completely unforgettable—honestly, I’d go back just for that. We also had a taco (I think it was the Taco de Cochinita Pibil) that was packed with flavor and perfectly balanced with a little heat and a hit of citrus. The margaritas were strong and well-made—not overly sweet, just the way I like them. And then the tres leches. Good lord. I’ve never had a version like this. It was light, decadent, and topped with what I think was a drizzle of olive oil that somehow made the whole thing even better. It sounds strange, but it worked in the most amazing way. I still think about that dessert. The entire vibe of the place feels intentional and elevated without trying too hard. The menu leans creative and modern but stays true to its roots. Easily one of my new favorite restaurants in Fort Collins.

If you’re a foodie, you must go to Cozobi Fonda Fina in Boulder! It’s Mexican, but not traditional in any way. Each dish is unique and combines flavors and seasonings that you wouldn’t normally think of putting together, and they work! Everything is fresh and delicious. It’s the perfect place to order a bunch of things or let your server choose what to bring you, and then share - you will not be disappointed. The service is fantastic! I was there twice and had Oz the first time and Sam the second. Both were AMAZING but you’ll be happy to know that EVERYONE is friendly, knowledgeable, and super helpful. Pictures are: Guacamole with an Avocado Margarita and a Classic Marg, Camote Asado, Enmolada de Pollo, Hibiscus Margarita, Avocado Margarita, and Tres Leches Cake. Not pictured but dishes we also had were: Callo de Hacha Al Las Brasas, Tostada de Atun, Taco de Suadero, and Frijoles Puercos Estido “Alma.”

This Mexican restaurant comes with a very different experience, food is cooked in an exceptional style and had my first avocado margarita with black salt, out of this world tasty and refreshing and my main course of Carne Asada was perfectly cooked and to top everything was the Tres Leches dessert, the ambiance is very soothing and the server Taylor was great. I will definitely recommend the restaurant if you are in a mood for Mexican food.

My bf and I had such a wonderful experience here! Every dish we ordered was fresh, delicious, and very well made. The scallops were so insanely good that I'm going to be dreaming about them for weeks. The avocado marg was also tasty and very interesting. The service was impeccable too.

Google
Had an excellent double date night at Cozobi. Sam, our waiter, was genuine, knowledgeable and funny. We started with the guacamole, camote asado and frijoles puercos estilo “Alma”. Everything was excellent but the sweet potato dish was especially memorable. The frijoles were also a table favorite. For fish we got the aguachile and the tuna tostada. Strong fish taste mixed with strong orange taste in the aguachile, but the tostada was the table favorite. For tacos we got the cochinita pibil and costra de NY strip. They were both delicious with the cochinita pibil being a little more spicy and interesting while the NY strip was described as flavorful comfort food. For desert we got the only option, the tres leches. While somewhat a departure from our understanding of a tres leches cake, it was yummy and nice to share with the table. Finally for drinks we tried the avocado margarita, the sweet corn margarita, the regular margarita, the hibiscus margarita, the Oaxacan old fashioned, and the Mex 75. My favorites were the sweet corn margarita, very unique, and the hibiscus marg, very colorful and tasty.

One of my favorite restaurants and overall dining experiences. We sat at the chefs counter and he was warm and brilliant. Everything we ate was unbelievable. We ended up doing a tapa style dinner and ordered 6-7 small plates so we could try everything.

Yelp
This restaurant has some of the best gourmet tacos! What is a gourmet taco you ask... well, it a NY strip taco bursting with amazing flavors that I've never tasted before. Pair this with their brisket taco that has a smokey flavor but no hint of bbq and you can't go wrong! Everything sounded amazing and we will sure be sure to come back and try some of their main courses!

Yelp
On a holiday weekend, we were lucky enough to snag a reservation for Cozobi. And we are so glad we did. Upon entry we were greeted by a hostess that exuded excitement when we casually asked her what she recommends. Then, once seated we were pleased with the busy, but not too loud atmosphere and the view of the kitchen. The guacamole was a standout amongst the guacamoles that I have tasted in my life. Particularly, the charred vegetables and salsa negra were excellent complements to the guacamole. The camote asado was also excellent. We also had the taco de suadero, costra de NY strip, and the enmolada de pollo. While all of these three were excellent, we were slightly less impressed by the enmolada de pollo. However, this might be because neither of us are big mole fans. The brisket and the steak in the other dishes were prepared perfectly. Overall, this restaurant is a MUST if you are anywhere near Boulder.

Yelp
I love high-end upscale Mexican food. And who doesn't love a Michelin star restaurant? Combine the two and be prepared to have your mind blown. Reservations are a must no matter what time of day you are coming. We came for lunch as soon as it opened. Service was impeccable and they made sure to ask about dietary restrictions. If I understand them correctly, everything there is gluten-free. Which was perfect because we had someone in our group that was celiac. Most of the dishes we had came primarily from the starter section. It seemed like the best way to go to get the most variety. Of everything that we had the agave roasted sweet potato was by far the most impressive. However, the simple Carne Asada taco on what appeared to be a blue corn tortilla was simply sublime. Not to be missed and definitely to be tried was the avocado margarita. It might sound a little unusual, but I assure you that the texture was both tart and silky. It just seemed more grounded than your average margarita. The ceviche tostada was beautiful. Both in presentation and in flavor. The puréed white bean that made an appearance on a couple of items is a velvety texture with a ton of flavor The only thing that wasn't mind blowing, but still simply delicious. Was the lamb mole. I would've been perfectly satisfied that was all I had, but in comparison to some of the other items, it was delicious but a little heavy. If I ever find myself in Boulder again, I will go out of my way to make sure that I eat here

Yelp
I mean. This place is the closest you can get to a 5 star in Boulder From a Michelin Star chef who also owns Alma Fonda Fina in Denver. Everything's great. Avocado margarita is a must. I come for that one first!

Yelp
Last night we sat at the chef's table and had an unbelievably good meal. We chose items from the first three sections of the menu and had six items and also had dessert. The highlights of the meal were many, but I would have to say that the sweet potato was our favorite, but we also loved pretty much everything on the menu that we tried. We got the guacamole , aqua chilies, tuna tostada , steak, taco, mushroom crema, Would order everything again but the mushroom crema. We also had the famous avocado margarita (delicious) and a regular margarita. Finished it all off with the mind blowing tres de leches. This is the type of restaurant that we would love to go to in nyc and it's awesome to have something of this quality in Boulder. We will be back many times to their amazing place!

Yelp
I recently dined at Cozobi Fonda Fina in Boulder, CO, with a coworker, and we opted to sit at the chef's counter--a choice that turned out to be an incredible experience. Watching the chefs in action brought an extra level of excitement to our meal, and we got to see firsthand the passion and precision behind each dish. Owen helped us make some menu selections and it was clear he is extremely knowledgeable and passionate about the food. The Chilaquiles and Tuna Tostada were both fantastic. The ambiance at Cozobi is warm and inviting, with a modern twist on traditional Mexican decor that feels both authentic and stylish. I'd definitely recommend grabbing a seat at the chef's counter if you're able; it's a unique way to experience the restaurant and adds a fun element to the dining experience. This place is a gem in Boulder for anyone looking to enjoy elevated Mexican cuisine with a modern touch!

Yelp
Okay, this place is so good!! Nice inside, and we came in on a cool night, so the windows were open. We risked it and went without reservations, so we sat at the bar and felt the nice breeze. And let me tell you, Steve took care of us! Not only did he make us delicious cocktails, but he was incredibly knowledgeable about the food and the chef's story. We loved all the food, which were all of his recommendations. Really couldn't go wrong. The favorite of the night was probably the tostada de atun, but the agave charred sweet potato was the best sweet potato dish I've ever had at a restaurant- incredibly flavorful and uniquely prepared. The scallops were buttery and delicious. We did specifically ask if they had any additional meat on top as many restaurants like to add bacon to scallops and we're all pescatarian, but Steve assured us there was not. However, when the dish came out, the woman presenting it to us told us it was topped with meat. She immediately took it back to fix it when we explained the situation and as soon as Steve saw what was happening he came over and asked us what went wrong, was quick to apologize and spoke to the GM because they changed it without his knowledge and honestly I was impressed by the way he handled it all. Another big highlight of the night was the avocado margarita! Holy moly, refreshing and different and so tasty. The restaurant has a nice chill vibe, low lightening, but not so dim you can't see what you're eating (but it did blur my pics a bit sorry!). A great new place to try out in Boulder and though it's a little on the pricey side, it's absolutely worth it. I see more Cozobi in my future!

Yelp
This was my 3rd time to visit this new restaurant in Boulder. Last time, the electricity went out just after ordering drinks and one appetizer so I didn't want to write a review until I had gone for the full experience. Each time we were welcomed by friendly staff members. The restaurant is beautifully decorated and has several options for seating. There is a patio and a chef's table (a bar that faces the kitchen), but we chose to sit inside the dining room. We ordered 2 classic margaritas and they are excellent. We keep hearing about the avocado marg, but I haven't gotten up for trying it yet. All of the plates are small plates, so keep that in mind when ordering. To begin, we ordered the Frijole Puercos Estilo "Alma" and the puréed beans have a great texture and flavor. The puercos is deliciously spiced and has the perfect amount of heat. The Rajas Con Crema is not to be missed either - I love poblano peppers and these were what the color green must taste like and the crema, well, need I say more - it's creamy poblano peppers with spices that make your mouth water and ask for more. It comes with only one tostada shell, so we asked for another and it was perfect for sharing. We also ordered the Chilaquiles De Birria and again - amazingly mouthwatering and fresh. The chips stayed crisp and the sauce was delicioso! My only "complaint" is that there really wasn't enough de birria for the price. What there was, well it was fabulous but I expected more for $19. Finally, we decided to try the Tres Leches cake. It was cooked as Tres Leches was meant to be, incredibly moist with milk yet not soggy! It had a great texture. The twist of orange caramel was good, though the orange pieces were a bit too large for my liking. Our servers were all amazing and accommodating. We were bummed when Masas Y Agaves closed so we are thrilled that Cozobi delivered not only great food and service but an wonderful experience as well. A new favorite for us and we look forward to bringing friends!

Yelp
Wow wow wow! Can't say enough about this experience. There may not be words. Every dish was phenomenal. The service was spectacular. If you know their sister restaurant Alma, then you know you are in for some downright mind blowing cuisine. I'll dream about this meal until I can go back.

Yelp
CFF is doing a tremendous job delivering delicious food and libations in a low key location across the street from the St Julien. We tried a myriad of items and each was well balanced, flavorful and delicious. We also took a small trip down the mezcal road with a few delicious choices off of the extensive menu. We will definitely be back to explore new mezcals and enjoy the great food and friendly service.

Yelp
After being unable to grab a table in Denver, we decided to make the drive to Boulder. WOW is it worth it. The ultimate compliment is when I have 0 photos of the meal. Everything was enjoyable from start to finish. And the margaritas were phenomenal. Can't wait to try the one in Denver.

Yelp
I've been a bit on a Yelp review Hiatus and Cozobi gave us the perfect reason to write this. Now that was an experience! We've already tried the Alma version of this restaurant in Denver so we were very familiar with the concept and what Kasie and Johnny were bringing to the table. Now with the new Cozobi concept opening around the same time my mom was having her birthday it was a no brainer. We kept telling everyone in our group "if it's anything like the Denver location you're gonna have your mind blown." This might sound over the top but I don't think the phrase "mind blown" even did our experience justice. From top to bottom every plate we ordered was incredible and so much depth to it. We ordered the Elote Caesar Salad, Camon's Asado (sweet potato dish), Guacamole a las brasas, fire roasted oysters (a la leña), Scallop tostada, Coconut Ceviche, Flautas de Birria and Pollo a Las Brasas. I need to also say the drinks were phenomenal. Every loved their alcoholic versions and since I was on DD duty I ordered the kiddy version of the Jamaica (Hibiscus) drink. It was so good i ordered two. Once again Johnny and Kasie knocked it out of the park, way better than the Rockies have in recent years, and should take the crown on the "Fonda Fina" category. By the way if any of the pictures seem blurry or like we were missing a dish you are not wrong. It was so good we were having an out of body experience.

Yelp
This is the best new restaurant in Boulder! Every dish here is incredible. Cozobi Fonda Fina is an experience you are going to tell everyone about. Cozobi is the new sister restaurant of our favorite restaurant in Denver, Alma Fonda Fina (1 Michelin Star as of Sept 2024!). We visited for the first time tonight and everything we ordered was incredible. The Camote Asado is the signature dish of CFF and AFF. It's a non-negotiable order every visit. It's an incredible marriage of sweet and spicy elements with a variety of exciting textures. I think about this sweet potato a few times a week. The frijoles puercos were rich and creamy. I asked the staff what beans they use so we can try to replicate this dish at home. (White navy beans btw) The Chilaquiles were amazing and may be exclusive to CFF. These set a new standard to which I will hold all other chilaquiles dishes to. They were that good. I'm not a guy that orders Ribeyes at restaurants. I feel that I can pull off a Ribeye at home that outshines a lot of steakhouses that I've visited. CFF's Ribeye is the real deal. It was perfectly salted and had the crispy sear that so many places get wrong. The mushrooms and onions that come with this dish were a great pairing. This location is the larger of the two restaurants. If you are having trouble getting a table at AFF, give Cozobi Fonda Fina a shot and you won't be disappointed.

Yelp
Amazing experience at Cozobi. We sat at the chefs table and had a wonderful time speaking with Chef Arturo and Isaac. Food was unexpected and delicious. Worth the drive from Denver will be back.

Yelp
Great dining experience, drinks are amazing, every bite of food was amazing. Friendly staff. 10 out of 10!

Yelp
This new concept from Johnny Curiel (Alma Fonda Fina is his first concept in the LoHi area of Denver) is more upscale. Substantially more seating inside with a shaded patio overlooking Walnut St. The chefs counter has 6 seats looking towards a much larger kitchen with a wood fired oven. They are 1 block south of Pearl St and opposite the St. Julien hotel. Jordan, the general manager formely sous chef and server with Alma Fonda Fina, says they are starting slow but most Fri/Sat nights they fill up with locals and guests from the St Julien. He allowed me to look over the menu and gave me plenty of time to decide what courses I wanted. They utilize nixtamal grinders to provide fresh corn masa for tortillas. Cozobi is the Mexican god of corn. So I started with a Corn Margarita. Very nice. My first food was the Elote Caesar salad. Truly massive!! Lots of fresh greens with crumbled Chicharron, roasted corn and parmesan cheese. Only $17. Next was broiled east coast oysters with salted butter and Serrano ponzu. I added a glass of Mexican Mision Blanco wine from Bodego De Santo Tomas. Perfect pairing. I got two soft tacos, a Taco Mole Verde with plenty of carnitas and thre Taco De Barbacoa with lamb, both for $7 each. My main course was the wood fired oven baked chicken with roasted new potatoes and a dipping sauce of chicatana mayonnaise with a second glass of white wine. Chicatana is dried ground red ants which imparts an interesting accent. It's not harsh or bitter. I met the head chef, Chris. Johnny Curiel is the executive chef. I was so impressed, I made a future reservation thru Tock for 7pm on a Saturday night in September.

Yelp
Attentive service, attractive decor and exceptional flavor profiles in the offerings. Tried almost dishes and literally each was unique and delicious. All that with great Mezcals to choose from.

Yelp
Excellent spot for a date night or group of 4. There were no open reservations in the system, so we walked in as soon as they opened the doors. There was plenty of open and comfortable bar seating. The steak taco was one of the best tacos I've ever had. The flavors and care of each menu item really set them apart from 99% of restaurants. I think they deserve way more accolades, and they deserve more walk-in visitors than they had on a weekday night when we were there. You have to try to eat dinner here when you're in Boulder (or Denver)!
google avatar

Cristina F.

Yelp
One of the best meals I've had. The flavors were remarkable and the food was unlike anything I've had, vegan coconut ceviche was awesome! Mezcal selection was great! Loves the bozal ibérico. My server was so sweet and extremely informed as well. Worth every penny!

Yelp
This place is heaven on a plate. The concept of fresh corn with the fresh vegetables and sauces are incredibly well balanced.

Yelp
Absolutely delicious food and cocktails. My husband and I sat at the bar and the chefs were incredibly knowledgeable and friendly. Everything we had was amazing and authentic and we will definitely be back!

Virginia W.

Yelp
YES! Try the Tostada de Atun, you won't regret it. Other dishes are intriguing & WAY beyond traditional Mexican, we've tried many of them & would recommend them all. This is a gem!

Rebecca T.

Yelp
AMAZING high-end Mexican tapas. Flavourful food combinations in a delightful setting. This wasn't just a meal. It was a dining experience. Don't skimp on this meal and try the to-die-for cocktails/mocktails. You won't be sorry! Service was promt and attentive, sweet Trudy, our server, is knowledgable on the menu and did a stellar job at pairing our dishes and accompanying drinks.

Yelp
Wow! What a find! This is mainly Oaxacan food which is done extremely well. We've been twice in the last 3 weeks. Margaritas are great, service is excellent, and the tres leches cake, to die for. You have to go!

Katie S.

Yelp
You guys! My mind is blown! This place is absolutely incredible! One of the top dining experiences I've ever had. My husband and I sat at the kitchen bar. It was so much fun watching all the action. Owen was cooking near us and giving us the low down on everything going on in the kitchen. He was so sweet and personable. We had the lamb neck Barbacoa, the scallop dish, the beef shank dish, and the lamb shank. I couldn't even pick a favorite it was all so good and done so well. The tres leches desert was also awesome. We also enjoyed meeting the chef. He shared a dish he's working on for the new restaurant in Denver which has us so excited to try the new place. I'm so impressed with Johnny and the incredible work he's doing. You have to go here and give it a try!

Lauren H.

Yelp
This place blew our minds! Everything we ordered was exceptional! Very different dishes, but 100% the best food we have ever had. Service was excellent as well. Thank you, Will!

Yelp
Thank you so much for an awesome meal. Everything was incredibly delicious and they took great care to help me with my food allergies!!! I really appreciated it. I'll definitely be back!

Paul H.

Yelp
Delicious Oaxacan cuisine. Several different flavors of mole. Our favorite restaurant in Boulder.

Mara H.

Yelp
We celebrated a birthday with 5 family members. First time visit. Disappointing. Menu options do not work well for family style dining, which is promoted by wait staff. Food was great but portions were a joke for the price. Guacamole order is about half an avacado. How does one divide two ribeye tacos ( mini) into five pieces? It took 3 hours to actually feed 5 people with their small servings and long wait in between orders. You lost us.

Brian L.

Yelp
We stopped in for HH on Thursday. Food was amazing. The nacho was full of flavor as was the steak taco. Margaritas were perfect. Our bartender was very personable. Ambiance is upscale. Will definitely be back when we return to Boulder!

Jan G.

Yelp
Nothing short of AMAZING! Haven't ever had anything like it. Quality, unique food choices and presentation

Anna M.

Yelp
I just had my first dinner at Cozobi, first of hopefully many to come! They provide an incredible dining experience beginning with the staff and their attention to detail. We were made to feel special from the moment we walked through the door! The food and recipes are unique and fabulous. Each dish stunned us with the mix of flavors and textures all combined to make every bite an experience. This the best food I have eaten outside of Oaxaca. And, happy hour prices are as good or better than anywhere in town. Come on Boulderites and go support this great new restaurant we are so lucky to have!

Richard T.

Yelp
Most people rely on reviews or word of mouth in deciding on new restaurants to try. Cozobi Fonda Fina has been give 5 stars in most reviews. The sister restaurant in Denver has recently received a Michelin star. After reading all the accolades, my family of five decided to try CFF on Saturday evening. The reviews and accolades did not prepare us for the excellence across the entire restaurant--from the server, Chad, the receptionist, Jordan, and the GM, Mickayla, to the ambience and foremost, the food, it was all impeccable and totally unexpected. As long-time Boulderites, we have eaten at many of Boulder's most well-known restaurants. Suffice it to say, this dining experience was perhaps the most enjoyable we have had in Boulder in almost 20 years. AND, with six dishes that are ample and meant to be shared and a flight of three mezcals (from a selection of over 50) and Mexican draft beers, not to mention the complimentary cocktails while waiting for our table because our table wasn't quite ready, the total bill before gratuity was $240.00 for a party of five. Absolutely astonishing, in this day and time, especially in Boulder, to have dinner of this quality, depth of flavor and originality and drinks for what we considered such a reasonable amount. We will certainly be back.
