The 13 Best Ice Cream Shops In Houston - Houston - The Infatuation

"Craft Creamery, a small scoop in Montrose, makes excellent ice cream. Try fantastic savory flavors, like cacio e pepe, alongside classics like cookies and cream or seasonal strawberry and basil. Or, when available, the brisket-flavored ice cream, which is creamy, smoky, and somehow tastes like all the flavors of a well-made, flavorful barbecue, without the meat. Or, completely bypass flavor decision paralysis and order a scoop flight of either five or all 16 flavors." - Chelsea Thomas, Gianni Greene

22 Essential Houston Ice Cream Shops

"Chef Steve Marques approaches his ice cream as he would any dish, meaning not only do his scoops contain top ingredients, but they often lean into savory and sweet flavors that’ll be hard to get elsewhere. His award-winning brisket, pho, and cacio e pepe flavors are must-tries; the Bastani and miso caramel, crowd favorites; and the vanilla, a standout despite it being a run-of-the-mill flavor in the ice cream world." - Brittany Britto Garley

Google
Great ice cream. Candied pecan was delicious. I will say the cookies and cream one sort of had pulverized cookies and sort of feel like sand in your mouth. They also have a brisket flavor ice cream that's definitely weird but different and worth sampling. Regardless it was good. I noticed too late that they also offer a sample flight which includes 7 mini scoops, that way you are able to try more. Parking is limited but be mindful of that. I never even knew it was here since it's not so noticeable from the outside. Interior is very nice and staff was very friendly.

Google
After attending an ice cream dinner(highly recommend!) we finally made it back to this magical creamery. Everything about this place is amazing, from the incredible and unique selection of flavors to the wonderful customer service! Christopher was such a gem and even let my husband and I try a flavor that wasn't currently in the case. I highly recommend this spot to anyone looking to elevate their ice cream experience, you won't be disappointed!

We came on Saturday evening but there was no customer at all. There were lots of strange flavors and it was very difficult for us to pick what we wanted. Thankfully, the employee was very friendly and nice. She let us try as many flavors as we wanted. She also introduced that the owner used to be a chef at a restaurant and later opened this place and created his own recipes for each flavor. After trying some flavors, we ordered pistachio, shiro miso caramel and peanut butter. They were quite good. But if I have a chance to come back, I would go with normal flavors such as chocolate, mint chip, etc. Their special flavors didn’t suit my taste T_T

Google
This place was amazing! I’m hoping foot traffic picks up as this is a local ice cream join that opened for the first DURING the pandemic! I thought the ice cream was delicious. They have unique flavors that all taste wonderful from sampling many. The place was clean, service was very friendly, and I am very excited to come back again in the future. If anyone somehow had a bad experience here - give it another shot. It is worth it and a place I’m glad is here in town. Thank you for opening up, I will be visiting again soon! Small cup is $4 (can get 2 half scoops with 2 flavors), medium is $6, and a large is $8(? Not sure on Large, dang remember exactly).

After having dinner, I decided to get something sweet and happened to come across Craft Creamery. The place is located in the Montrose area. It is a small shop with limited parking on the side. They had many flavors from sweet to savory, and I got the 7 scoop mini flight for $15, which I thought was a great deal that allows you to try a variety of their flavors. The flavors I tried were: Candied pecan Brown sugar cinnamon CCC (coffee, cardamom, cinnamon) Peanut butter stracciatella Birthday Candied ginger Texas trail ride I also tried a sample of their savory flavor, which was the brisket, and I could definitely tell it was brisket. My favorite flavors were birthday and candied ginger. The birthday had sprinkles in them, and the candied ginger also had pieces of candied ginger in them. Overall, I really think the flight is a great idea for trying a lot of different and unique flavors.

Google
Awesome unusual homemade flavors due to the chef background of the owner! They are on creamy side but you won’t feel too much milky taste with the well-balanced spices and ingredients, as well as the texture. Looking forward to other holidays and seasonal flavors!

Google
If you love Ice Cream, treat yourself here, and allow yourself to be surprised! Do you like Pho? They have pho ice cream! Do you like blue cheese? Esseyes le! You may just end up liking blue cheese even more! What about chocolate and say... foie gras? I had a bite and it was superbly balanced! They all were! This place deserves to be on the "best of" ice cream lists in Houston at least! These helados are anything but simple, so don your explorer cap, and come be refreshed and awakened to what ice cream can be!

Shah M.

Google
The fact that they offer a flight option with 7 different flavors is one of the coolest things I’ve ever seen at an ice cream shop. And with the unique type of flavors they offer, getting a flight is a no brainer. The range of flavor options was also pretty intense, going from the strange/extreme of Cacio e Pepe and Brisket, to more simple options like Candied Pecan and Birthday Cake. The best of the flavors we tried were easily Milk & Cookies, Miso Caramel, and Candied Pecan. Flavors like Cacio e Pepe and Birthday Cake were just a little too over the top or too sweet. Either way, I’m excited to try it again soon when new flavors come out.

Yelp
The Ice Cream was very unique so having Christopher explain the concept and best pairings made it really fun. So service was great. Places was very casual and comfortable Ice Cream was amazing and unique. I certainly recommend and I will be being friends and family to experience this in future.

Yelp
Wow! This place is WONDERFUL! Get: literally any ice cream or sorbet (particularly cacio e pepe, miso caramel, chocolate, honey lavender) Avoid: not checking their hours (closed all day Monday and Tuesday) This ice cream shop was a true culinary experience. I've been wanting to true it for months and finally had the opportunity today. They could not have been more friendly and inviting. We tried nearly every flavor and genuinely loved each one. They have such a solid grasp on how to create innovative and delightful combinations in the medium of ice cream. My favorites today were the cacio e Pepe, miso caramel, honey lavender, cougar pride, birthday cake and king cake! I can't wait to try their new flavors!!
google avatar

Yelp
Amazing flavors at this place and there are so many great ones to try! I probably sampled half of them and was very welcomed to. I really enjoyed trying the brisket, cacio e pepe, and CCC (cardamom, cinnamon, and coffee). We finally decided on the ginger flavor which was amazing. The candied ginger pieces were chewy and had the perfect texture and flavor. It wasn't too sweet and it was very refreshing. The ice cream was creamy and hit the spot especially during a hot summer. If you haven't tried this place you must try!

Yelp
A unique and delicious ice cream experience! Craft Creamery is owned by a seasoned chef who used to work in fine dining and you can tell by the flavors and quality of the ice cream. When I visited, Chris let me try all of the different flavors pairings, and explained each flavor profile with such detail. My favorites were the cherry, candied pecan, and lavender honeycomb. Each flavor was layered, complex, and matched what the name suggested. This place is a foodie paradise and would highly recommend you check it out if you love ice cream!

Yelp
Austin seems to have more variety compared to Houston when it comes to savory ice cream flavors. For example, Luv Fats offers both soy sauce and avocado flavors, and the ice cream outpost of DipDipDip Tatsu-Ya serves black pepper-yuzu mascarpone ice cream and a shiitake mushroom flavor. Houston ice cream parlours, on the other hand, tend to stick with the sweet side of the sweet/savory binary. Craft Creamery, located in the Montrose, is the exception. There is a cacio e pepe flavor and also a wagyu brisket flavor (a hint of smokiness), both of which are incredible and taste exactly as described. For my first visit, I went safe with the vanilla ice cream; however, the vanilla at Craft Creamery has a wonderful rich yet subtle flavor. If you, like myself, grew up with old school vanilla ice cream from Blue Bell years ago before the formulas were changed, you definitely need to try this flavor here. Definitely recommend this place.

Yelp
Go here, but do not expect the ordinary. This place combines wonderful savory flavors in an exceptional base. Do try them all - you will be pleasantly surprised!

Yelp
Sooo good and so many fun flavors along with classics. The man who served us was so awesome and let us try some flavors and told us the history and fun facts about the place. I came in expecting just regular ice cream but it was gourmet!! I got the cherry chip and peanut butter chip stratchatella which was phenomenal. They also do wine tasting with ice cream and private events!!

Yelp
Located in Montrose with a few parking spaces around the building, Craft Creamery is a super interesting ice cream shop. They change their menus frequently and focus on very very unique flavors. They have classics like mint chip, vanilla to the more interesting like bastani (a Persian inspired rose saffron ice cream) and to the super wild like cacio e Pepe and bacon. It seems like they always have a different "savory" ice cream available on the menu, and provide plenty of samples so you don't have to guess about what it may taste like. My friends and I got a flight, which came with 7 mini scoops. It's super affordable at $15 and let's you try a bunch of different things, which I would highly recommend for this place as they have so many things to try! And tbh the savory flavors are surprisingly delightful. So if you're an adventurous food eater, would definitely recommend coming here.

Yelp
What can I say about Craft Creamery that the other reviews have not already. I saw an instagram post about cacio e pepe and pho flavored ice creams on my feed. My first reaction was, "is this some kind of a sick joke?" Who is inside my brain and creating ice cream from some of my favorite dishes that I have been craving all day. Fast forward to driving straight after a stroll around the neighborhood as it was very close to their closing time and we were greeted with a smile (even though he was wearing a mask, you can just see these things) and the most radiantly welcoming individual behind the counter. My first thought was to get basil, olive oil, and pistachio. But once I saw that there really is the pho and cacio e pepe, I could not resist. I had to get it. Inside my head Arianna Grande was on loop screaming "I see it, I like it, I want it, I got it. YAH!" And so I did. First bite of each one tasted exactly like you think it would and I can't describe it anything else other than literally eating pho but it was ice cream. Same with the cacio e pepe. And at the recommendation of the worker I got the combination. I was very satisfied with my purchase. To quote Marina (fka Marina and the Diamonds) - "Living life like I'm in a play; In the limelight, I want to stay" is what the ice cream was saying to me when I was posting it on my ig story. Next time I am getting the strawberry flavor though because my dining companion refused to share his with me. :)

Itzel R.

Yelp
Amazing ice cream and even better service! Chris was so sweet and patient! Will definitely be back!!!!!
google avatar

Yelp
First of all, there is a Cacio e Pepe flavor! And it's so good! Unfortunately we weren't able to try the miso caramel bc they sold out. But this is by far my favorite ice cream place in Houston. Without a doubt. Not inly are all of the flavors delicious and unique, the owner gave us such great recommendations as to how he would pair the flavors. And his recall were on point! Definitely gotta get here earlier and try the caramel miso. Def will be back! Be aware they are closed on mon and Tuesday!
google avatar

Trung N.

Yelp
I appreciate the inventiveness of the flavors and how everything is homemade. The ice cream is rich but the scoop is definitely not as big as I hope. Not that this should matter much but the sampling sizes were pretty small. The great thing about Craft Creamery is really the vast number of flavors to choose from. The staff was super friendly as well.

Yelp
My BFF and I came here looking for some ice cream to help save the day after a bad let-down at Acme across the street. Boy, was I glad to come by! I was amazed when looking at the different, exciting flavors that Craft Creamery boasted. I don't think I was ever this excited at an ice cream shop since Salt & Straw in Portland! I was able to try a sample of different flavors, and finally settle on the Elote & Chicken&waffle. I definitely loved the Elote flavor from start to finish, especially with the toppings as well. It really captured the spirit of elote! The chicken&waffle was good at first, but became unbearable heavy at the end - but maybe it was just me. Other than that, my friend had the Tomato tarragon and Strawberry balsamic. We both liked the Tomato tarragon, the strawberry balsamic became a bit overpowering at the end. I am excited to come back and try other flavors at Craft! They didn't have the Jalapeno cornbread when I came, so I'd love to try that the next time!

Yelp
I came here on a Saturday afternoon and it was pretty sparse. The interior is very cold and barren like. I sampled some of the flavors (the woman serving the samples gave such small samples I could barely taste the flavors) and ultimately decided on CCC (coffee, cardamom, and cinnamon) - I love a good coffee ice cream and the spices really added to the complexity of the ice cream. Really enjoyed that flavor (the other ones I sampled not as much) and one scoop was $4.25 so not too bad compared to others in the area. The scoop is definitely on the smaller side though. Overall, they have a decent variety of unique flavors and I'd recommend checking them out at least once!

Yelp
All I can say is wow! The ice cream here is absolutely delicious but the star of the show is the customer service! I brought my family here for dessert and the guy running the place gave us so many samples! He explained the process of making the ice cream, the flavor notes (top, middle, and end) and the story behind each flavor. It's obvious he loves his job and puts his all into his craft, will definitely be coming back here and dragging all my friends along!

Yelp
An ice cream shop for foodies. Owned and run by chefs that have cooked in some of Houston's best restaurants.. craft creamery is an elevated experience. From the unique flavors giving a complex array of tastes throughout each bite to the story associated with its creation. This is an ice cream shop that has managed to stand out among tough competition in Montrose. Give it a try.. the person that helped us- Chris.. was a kind and caring person. We will be back, and I hope to wait in a line wrapped around the building next time.
google avatar

Yelp
Craft Creamery has high-quality and a little quirky ice cream. I had a sample of the bacon ice cream and thought it was very good, but I ended up going with the bourbon butterscotch, and it was delightful! You can tell this ice cream is made with quality ingredients, and it was super creamy.
google avatar

Amanda H.

Yelp
I came here on a Sunday afternoon after doing errands and craving some ice cream. I wanted to support a local business, which led me here to Craft Creamery. Definitely a hole in the wall place. I drove past it since there wasn't any overt signage. It's right next door to Juiceland in the same building. Essentially no parking lot but it shares some parking spots with Juiceland next to the building off Yupon. I was the only customer so I was quickly served. I ordered the candied pecan flavor in the triple cup. With tax it was a little over $8. It was delicious! Definitely no artificial flavoring. Will return to try other flavors!
google avatar

Eman S.

Yelp
I tried out the orange Creamsicle, which tasted like those Flintstones push pops from childhood. The bastani was phenomenal. Saffron amongst other flavors in a bold yellow color. Fun to look at, fun to eat. Plenty of seating but also, you can try crazy flavors like wagyu beef or pho. Not my vibe, but apparently very well done!
google avatar

Yelp
I liked their ice cream and their unique flavors!! I docked one star because of the service. The person helping us was not very welcoming and it seemed like he just wanted to get rid of us. Parking can be a little challenging but we parked next to juice land. Overall, the ice cream was delicious but service can improve a little bit more.

NeoBlueBearZchannel ..

Yelp
Was googling for last hour ice cream shops .... This one popped up........ I was honestly expecting the normal/ typical ice cream flavors ......... but very different and unique flavors. The ice creams were absolutely insanely amazing ...... definitely recommend this place and will be back ..... the gentleman was very helpful and informative as well

Yelp
Two stars because the ice cream wasn't bad, but mostly because the man pictured on the website (the owner I'm assuming) behaved strangely and made the experience a negative one. I came in with my friend on a Wednesday around 7:30 pm or so. The place was empty and he was sitting at a table in the way back on his laptop. He didn't say hello or greet us in anyway. He walked up behind the counter but didn't make a peep the whole 2 mins we spent looking at flavors and talking about them. He just watched us. It was so weird. I thought maybe he was sick or something... maybe there's a valid reason why he's not speaking? So we ordered and he gave us our ice cream, but he didn't read out our total to us, he just kinda walked away. My friend added a milk so he went to the back to get it. During that time some more customers walked in. The guy then comes back with the milk and all of a sudden starts talking! His voice is strong and confident, and he is being so helpful and informative about how the milk separates, yadda yadda yadda. At this point I'm convinced he only began to speak because some other customers came in. I can't help but feel like the owner had something against us, or he was having a bad day, or SOMETHING! Very odd and shady. Will not be returning and will happily be taking my business back to the ice cream place off Hazard. I do NOT recommend.
google avatar

Michelle L.

Yelp
I visited Craft Creamery last week during National Ice Cream day when they were giving out free scoops! There were so many unique flavors to choose from, but I ended up getting the Hibiscus Mint. It was absolutely delicious! While the mint flavor was strong, it didn't overpower the hibiscus and the ice cream as a whole tasted like a refreshing cup of herbal tea. I would definitely recommend this place if you're looking to try ice cream flavors you can't find anywhere else in Houston! Parking can be a hassle, as their lot is small (and shared with a couple other stores) but you can find street parking near the store. Thank you Craft Creamery for the free scoop! I will be coming back soon. :)
google avatar

Patrick D.

Yelp
Some of the best ice cream in the city. The guy that runs this place captures it well "we ask what strawberry tastes like not does this taste like strawberry". The flavors here capture the flavor and texture so well that it doesn't taste only like cream and takes it to the next level. Also, there's an actual rotating menu so tons of flavors to keep me coming back

Nichol T.

Yelp
Outstanding ice cream. Each flavor is so unique from Pho to birthday cake. You can actually taste the layers as it melts in your mouth. Excellent customer service with a warm welcome as you walk through the door. Just an all around cool place.

Danielle G.

Yelp
This was the coolest ice cream shop I've been to in Houston!! The flavors are so unique (Pho ice cream!?) and chef Christopher was so kind, had us try every flavor and told us the ingredients behind them all. so fun, highly recommend!!:)

Tara A.

Yelp
Very good ice cream, unique flavors and kind, helpful employees. Will return when in town again!

Royal W.

Yelp
The most creative taste combo exploded in my mouth! Very unique flavors and high quality ingredients. Will be back often for sure. Well done Craft Creamery!
google avatar

Anthony C.

Yelp
The most bold and adventurous ice cream flavors in Houston! BBQ brisket? Cacio e Pepe? Jalapeño cornbread? Sign me up! The texture's creamy yet not too rich or overly sweet. The flavors are true to their names and this is simply ice cream as an art. Well done craft creamery , what a fun way to end a night for your tastebuds.

Victoria P.

Yelp
This is no ordinary ice cream place. Very unique (and I mean that in a GREAT way) flavors. Christopher took us on a "ice cream tour" of the different flavors and how each pairs well with the other. For example, one flavor and another flavor together can remind you of a childhood memory. Really fun! If you go there at night, the sign is not visible. They are in the same shop area as JuiceLand. Highly recommend!

Yelp
This new ice cream spot opened up a few weeks ago on Westheimer and we've popped in a few times - and you should too! They have a good mix of traditional flavors (the chocolate is super creamy, we liked it) and ~wild cards~ like jalapeño cornbread (also delicious). They also have partnered with 8th wonder and have some sauces (chocolate, etc) infused with the alcohol. My husband loved the rocket fuel chocolate sauce. Not crowded and we felt safe from safety/health perspective during the pandemic.

Yelp
Best ice cream in Houston, hands down, not even close. With due respect to Amy's, Cloud 10, etc etc. The ice cream has a distinct, slightly tangy taste, which the owner attributes to the unhomogenized milk, and it may take a little getting used to. Otherwise, the texture is simply the smoothest by a wide margin. And pretty interesting flavours too. Definitely try it.

molly m.

Yelp
A fantastic find! Delicious treats and delightful conversation! A combination of classic and non traditional ice cream flavors served by friendly hosts who truly enjoy their craft. Highly recommend the candied pecan....just like grandma's pecan pie.

Yelp
DDDDDelicious ice cream!!!!!! The name of the ice cream shop really goes with the ice cream flavors! The craft of the flavor ice cream is amazing!!! I'm obsessed with ice cream! So, we got the 7 scoop flight !! If you're a crazy ice cream fanatic(like me), get the flight!!! I will be back for more ice cream!!!!!!

Dad H.

Yelp
Very interesting and delicious flavors. They got the classics with a twist as well as unconventional ones - I'm looking at you cacio e Pepe. Ask for the pairing recommendations!

Jahnvi B.

Yelp
This place has possibly the best ice cream in the country. There is no comparable, not even in New York or Los Angeles where there are literally hundreds of ice cream shops. The flavors are so perfect--you literally cannot go wrong. Every bite is like the first one: you don't lose the flavor because it's redundant after a few bites like you do at a lot of other artisanal ice cream places. Furthermore, the texture is on point. From the slow melt to the airiness and mouthfeel, it's just amazing. The serving temperature is perfect. This is my new go-to spot for ice cream. Empty cup for pictures because it was too good to wait for.
google avatar

Ted F.

Yelp
Artisanal ice cream with creative savory flavors and some everyday ones as well if you're not adventurous. The "brisket" gets all the publicity, but I like the Cacio e pepe. They also sell bottles of raw unpasteurized milk, if you're into that. Owner quite friendly. I'm rooting for him.
google avatar

Jenn G.

Yelp
Are you kidding me!?! This place is amazing. Go. Get. Ice cream. And try the bastani - so good.
google avatar

Bijou N.

Yelp
I don't know what happened but my husband and I got ice cream from here that was inedible. I think that's the way the ice cream is supposed to taste--described as tangy--but I felt like it was sour and not pleasurable at all. It tasted like the milk had gone bad. Also pretty steep prices, so it was a real bummer to throw away our 2 scoops of ice cream.
google avatar

Kari R.

Yelp
If you're looking for an ice cream spot with obscure flavors, look no further! Craft Creamery exceeded our expectations and then some!! I got the breakfast plate: vanilla, cinnamon and sugar, and Katz coffee. Absolutely one of the best ice creams I've ever had. Most of all though, the customer service was exceptional! This was a perfect snack after an afternoon at the Houston Museum of Natural Science! We can't wait to come back and try something new soon!
google avatar

Natalie T.

Yelp
We were in the area for dinner and decided to stop by this local store for dessert. I was disappointed with the service, the ice cream was subpar. My friends and I walked in and the guy behind the counter acted like we were bothering him, and waited on us without a greeting. There was no customers in the store at the time, so it was not busy at all. When my friend asked to sample a flavor since it was our first time there, he mumbles under his breath. Not sure what the problem was, but we still supported his business. Most likely won't be back, not worth it.

Yelp
Never in my life would I have concocted cornbread jalapeño ICE CREAM - let alone imagine it to taste delicious. Alas, this is what I've discovered at Craft Creamery. If you're in the mood for EXOTIC, please give these folks a try. Although the flavors may seem outrageous (and they are), there's a culinary touch and attention to detail that satisfies your craving and leaves you totally pleased with your bold flavor decisions.

Yelp
Ultra premium ice cream, amazingly smooth texture. The flavors are the real deal - strawberry that tastes like actual fresh strawberries and the peanut butter stracciatella - to die for. Best ice cream I've ever had.

Yelp
Such a cute spot and such wild flavors. I tried the brisket ice cream and it was so interesting! They also have a ton of other unique tasty flavors, like butterscotch bourbon and cacio e Pepe. I got the chocolate sorbet which was super rich and delicious. I also tried the CCC (coffee cardamom and cinnamon) and it was such a nice flavor profile for after dinner. Will be back!!

Yelp
Wonderful creamy ice cream. I wish the flavors that had just a singular flavor to them had a little more, something. The flavors that had more than one component were great though and you could clearly taste them all.
