South Bend’s Best Restaurants for a Great Meal | Eater Chicago

"It’s a south-of-town craft brewery where customers can drink beer from the patio above the banks of the St. Joseph River. The Post No. 1167 cream ale is a long-time favorite with a light body and smooth floral taste. The brewery is known for its meat, especially its smoked brisket and pastrami menu items. The restaurant also carries a full vegan menu, which is updated frequently. No matter your dietary restrictions, it’s worth trying out Crooke Ewe’s smoked jackfruit tacos with avocado salsa, cilantro, pickled jalapeño, and lime." - Drew Mentock

The food was delicious! The brisket burger was flavorful as well as fulfilling. Loved the sauce. Thank you to the waiter who asked about spice because the cheese sauce did have a little bite to it (was delicious just had some heat). Would also recommend the tacos (also on the spicy side but very tasty). Nice and relaxing on the upper deck area overlooking the river. Will definitely be going back to try the lemon grass chicken.

Google
We were bar hopping around Elkhart and saw this place on the map. The bar looked interesting and we like the name. From the outside it's a great looking bar with a great logo. The inside is a bit sterile but very clean, and has great views of the river. The staff was friendly and helpful. The beer was good and the food was delicious, you have to make sure and try the wings they were fantastic! Overall a great spot for a couple of pints and a bit of food.

Lynn G

Google
Really enjoyed the atmosphere and beer. Not much of a food menu but the smoked wings and the dry rub were amazing. Server was great and i will definitely recommend getting a sit on the outside patio because the view is so pretty.

Google
An Awesome place to pass the time and get some good beer paired with some random eats as well. It’s a little bit nicer than your average bar food, with a more upscale feel. This is a gastro brewery with indoor and outdoor dining with some scenic views. They have a good size menu of beers which can be locally found, and their menu sometimes changes so if you’re a local, you can steadily find something new. The first time stopping by there was a bit of a wait so instead of standing around we ventured outside and did a quick little walk to see the greenery with beer in hand. We’ve sat at the bar and tables on different occasions, too cold for the outside, but you can still view some of the outside from the windows. The staff were friendly and fast and threw out some popular recommendations, which I love. The food was pretty good, hot, and had a lot of flavor, a nice variety of different things to consume. If you are a beer connoisseur, this would not be a bad place to start in South Bend.

Google
Very friendly staff and views of the river are great but feels like someone's basement other than that the brews were great and the smoked wings were out of this world, with an order of the hush puppies it was a perfect combo to start a Saturday afternoon.

Google
This is our absolute favorite place to dine and often go here for brunch on Sundays. They have several outstanding gluten-free options and make all their own beers; the Super Creama is my fav. Housed inside the old VFW Post 1167, it's nestled right on the St Joe River next to a train crossing bridge. You can dine inside or outside next to the river .. Simply outstanding if you're into cozy pub's . Five stars and more ♥️

Google
Very cool brewery right on the St. Joseph River in South Bend. Great food Great Service Laid back atmosphere Worth a stop if you are in the area for a quick lunch or dinner. The offer their French Fries cooked in beef tallow like it should be! Beef Tallow is much healthier than traditional cooking oils.

Google
This was one of the best things I've eaten in a while. Forgot to take a pic before I started. It was a hot honey chicken skillet brunch special. My wife's French toast plate clean when she was done. The beer was delicious and the service was excellent.

Randy N.

Yelp
Delightful outdoor bar-height seating area on the river. The tacos were really good and staff was very helpful for my first-time visit!

Yelp
We really loved this find in Elkhart. After our first attempt to eat flopped we turned to yelp and boy did you up trumps Food was not what we expected it was better . Hush puppies and burgers but with an amazing twist on the food. Great craft beers and a thoroughly great experience

Yelp
Crooked Ewe is one of my favorite restaurants in the South Bend area. They have a super unique menu and lots of interesting beer choices as well. Everything is super filling and delicious. The patatas bravas as a starter were a hit and I loved my brisket melt. If only you're in the area for a weekend, this is one of the places you should circle on your South Bend dining list.
google avatar

Yelp
Came here with my dad for Notre Dame MBA Welcome Weekend. Loved the food and drink! It's an upscale bar with some great bar food. I personally loved the chicken wings and the smash burger. My dad spoke highly of the poke bowl as well. Fun place if you're visiting ND.

Yelp
Found this spot on Yelp and reviewed the beer menu online before my visit. I don't care for IPAs, so the heavier dark beers and stouts were just what ai wanted. This is a smoked meat and paired beer establishment, and it definitely lives up to the other online reviews and recommendations. There are a lot of food options, and the appetisers are meals onto themselves. The outdoor seating is excellent, and the view of the river is wonderful! Our server Amanda was very kind and helpful. I am looking forward to returning on my next trip!

Yelp
When I went to South Bend, I wasn't expecting such a cool brewery space to visit! Not only does Crooked Ewe brew their own beer (which some have been giving awesome awards!!), but they also serve up some great food. From other reviews and after talking with a friend, I learned the good menu is always changing, which means you're always going to be surprised with some new dishes! Beer was fire, and so was the food. But I have to take a second to shout out to the awesome service--people were friendly and super helpful--AND the great ambiance of the space. My friend and I sat outside on their porch (it was a perfect day in July!), and we were overlooking the river while chatting, drinking those beers, and nibbling on our food. Honestly, this hit all the right notes for a great visit to SB, and I really can't wait to check this place out again next time I'm in town!

Yelp
Ambiance was stellar. Watching trains go by. Food ( I had the tacos ) Delicious!! Beer was cold and yummy too. Great way to spend a spring evening

Mike M.

Yelp
Great food nice atmosphere. The outside overlooks the river. Service was good. Brisket was awesome
google avatar

Lauren W.

Yelp
The food menu is always changing so there is something for everyone. There are also plenty of drink options and the slushy is a nice summer special! It's definitely more of a special occasion restaurant rather than a regular spot for us, but the service is great and we always have a great time when we come.
google avatar

Lora B.

Yelp
Probably one of the better places to eat by Notre Dame! Our food and beers were great. We were not impressed by the poutine but our waitress noticed that we hadn't eaten it so she took it off our bill.

Marissa F.

Yelp
Nice seating place by the lake. Great drinks. Small food portions. Food was good. Workers were nice. Good environment. Medium/ small parking lot.

Yelp
4 stars for the service but I was pretty underwhelmed with the food. They don't have a huge menu. The establishment itself is clean. They have a nice outside seating area with heaters & a nice view. We started with the elote hush puppies. They were different; I liked them. I was excited to try the brisket but it was just ok. A little on the dry side. The sauce they served with it was heavily flavored with paprika. (Is my tongue red?) I wish I would have ordered the brisket melt, but after the waitress said she doesn't like it (cause she doesn't like brisket) I changed my mind. (Absolutely my fault). They no longer offer what's called a smoke plate, as I saw in other reviews. Instead you are ordering a la carte. The kimchi fried rice was seasoned well and pretty good. My husband has them lemongrass chicken sandwich with fries, which he enjoyed. I had a glass of Vinho Verde; it's reminds me of a Riesling. It was nice. My husband had the tart cherry cider. It's the only cider they have. Very tasty.

Yelp
I've been here a few times over the year when I'm in town and it's always been good. The food is inventive and I've always enjoyed each dish I've gotten. Most recently, I ordered the pastrami brisket and it was super flavorful and came with mustard and pickles. The elote hushpuppies are a great idea. The toppings and pickled peppers really made the dish, but the hushpuppies themselves were a little dense.

Yelp
Can't feed the location of this brewery. It's right off the water and at times you can see the rowing team out there. Pretty cool atmosphere. There is an upstairs and downstairs they both oversee the water. I did enjoy some of the beers that they had, but overall wasn't too impressed with their whole variety of beers. Some of them just didn't taste so great they did have a wine slushy, which tasted pretty good. Overall I will definitely come back to this place because of the location and there are some beverages that are OK but some of them work pretty good. I definitely want to come back and try their food as most of the things that I saw on peoples plates looked really really good so next time I will sure spend a little bit longer here.
google avatar

Cam G.

Yelp
This place was delish, and a fun place to grab a bite to eat with friends! I ordered the tart cherry cider (best cider everrrr) and rice noodle salad (also yum)
google avatar

Lindsey K.

Yelp
Good food and drinks, they are known for their smoked meats which do not disappoint. If you can sit outside, the views are beautiful as it sits right on the Saint Joseph River. Our service was slightly slow but they were all very friendly.
google avatar

Matt B.

Yelp
First, the food is amazing: I highly recommend the poutine as a shareable. For my entree I got the brisket melt and it was great, but overpriced--I'm honestly not sure why it costs so much. Conversely, the drinks are great and very well-priced! Service was friendly, but slow. We sat outdoors and had a nice view of the river, however we were bombarded by spiders and mosquitoes, so that's definitely something to be aware of.

Yelp
This is a South Bend must stop in. On the river, great creative food, selection of brews and wines. All overlooking the river. A must do.
google avatar

Bernice W.

Yelp
The food was good, and nicely presented. The service was fast and good. Not too pricey. Would go back here!
google avatar

Slim E.

Yelp
Great view on the river. Chill ambience, tasty beer and my food was really good! I had a drink outside to relax with the river flowing by then had dinner at the bar.

Yelp
Great food, nice environment and wonderful staff!! The brisket is delicious! Everything we have tried was very good!

Candace H.

Yelp
1. We were there about 2:30pm on a Saturday. Non-Irish game day in February. 2. Service was quick 3. Got a flight. Enjoyed several of the selections. 4. Also ordered small batch: hibiscus gose- excellent. 5. Food arrived hot and quickly. 5.He got the burger- said it was an excellent burger. Sauce ("Fancy")on the side. Fries- they give you lots. Tasty, thin, crunchy. 6. I got the vegan mushroom melt. Sauce ("Braves") on side and switched out for regular cheese rather than vegan. Delicious. Fries same as above. Overall great brew lunch!

Alan G.

Yelp
The beer is great. We were disappointed in our food. My corned beef sandwich featured thick slices of very dry corned beef. Won't be back for the food. But will be back for the beer and location.

Janet K.

Yelp
Had a wonderful time at a family function this weekend at the Crooked Ewe and we could not be more impressed by our server, Tara! She was so attentive, anticipating our needs before we ever had to ask! And of course the little children just flocked to her, I guess they sensed she was an amazing person because they just ran up and hugged her legs! The food and room was outstanding also - just an all round great venue!
google avatar

Josh B.

Yelp
Great selection of beer. Very interesting variety of dishes. Good service. Would definitely return again.
google avatar

Christen C.

Yelp
The Food was really good and so was the service. The ambiance was calm and it was by a river which had cool wildlife. The food was out really fast and the hush puppies were really good with the way the toppings. We loved the burgers and I had a bibimbap bowl that was fantastic. This was a great find!

Cherish P.

Yelp
Great food, wonderful atmosphere! Waitstaff was extremely kind and attentive. Will return again and again.
google avatar

Yelp
The beers were great! The food is okay, I ordered pulled pork tacos and the meat was dry.

Angie S.

Yelp
Fantastic food! Brooke was the best server. Very well informed on allergies- told us everything that was safe for us or could be made safe. We did not get sick and the food was so good. Best hushpuppies ever! thanks Brooke!

Yelp
Ewe will Love Crooked Ewe!! I flew into South Bend International Airport and after receiving my bags and picking up my rental car I was starving. I had Crooked Ewe in my iPhones GPS so I could go straight there from the airport. When I got there it was raining and the parking lot was almost full. Please note that people come and go, so I only had to wait a few minutes for multiple parking spaces to free up. I walked from the parking lot to the entrance and went in. Upon my arrival, and just coming from Ontario, I was the only one aside from the staff wearing a mask. It seemed so surreal after being in lockdowns and having to wear a mask everywhere you go in Ontario. I made my way to the bar and noticed one side had no one sitting there and sat down. The Bartender/Beer aficionado came over right away and recommended some of the seasonal beers to me, and helped me choose food for my dinner and the best beers to go with my meal. He also left me some samples to try out while I was deciding. Food and Drink for This Evenings Meal. Beers ( Brought some home too ) Glasgow Butcher Scotch Ale Vital IPA Wendigo American Stout Relief v3 Food FRIED RICE - Caramelized Brussel sprouts, Brined pork belly, Kimchi and Cilantro, Edamame, topped with a one hour egg and tso sauce. Smoke ( Meat Platter ) - Brisket, Shoulder and Pastrami as the meats with elder bread sourdough, accoutrements (bacon & heritage potato salad , Brussels & pork belly, house pickles with bbq sauce). The Beer was very well made, I've had beer at hundreds of Brew Pubs all over the US and Canada. Indiana's Craft beer scene is thriving ( just sayin' ) and Crooked Ewe is right up there with the best. The food was very well made and presented, and not one item in any of the dishes was disliked. The Bartender did a great job matching beers with the foods. Inside is a really well designed dining room, cozy and spacious so you don't feel cramped and you still are a comfortable distance from others. The bar area has seats spread out but like any bar you move the stools closer if you're with friends. At the bar there is a large window that overlooks the St Joseph River, giving the view a zen vibe whiles your drinking or eating. Crooked Ewe is a fine establishment and Ewe will love it too.
google avatar

Sandie G.

Yelp
Great service. Fantastic food and amazing beer!! Took a short road trip to check The Ewe out and we were not disappointed. On a Sunday, there was plenty of seating in the bar, view out to the river and plenty of parking.

Yelp
Quick little stop and nice find. Server was knowledgeable and friendly. I even bought an over priced sweatshirt, but totally worth it.
google avatar

Jaan R.

Yelp
I can fairly say I've never had a meal here that was anything less than stellar. The reuben is out of this world.
google avatar

Laura L.

Yelp
We went this evening for dinner, and the hush puppy starter was the best thing about the dinner. They did not have the smoke dish anymore ,they had basically the same components, Ala carte.,the brisket had no smoke flavour to it.The pork shoulder was nothing special. No real great special flavor in the meats ,they did have a side of ketchup flavored sauce which helped. The Brussel sprouts had bacon in it,which was mostly fat. Not impressed at all.

Katite M.

Yelp
We had a great dinner here. Decide food and ambience all get thumbs up. We would definitely go back next time we are in town.
google avatar

Leslie B.

Yelp
It was such a cool stop. The food was delicious and the beer was good. It was such a popular stop that the kitchen got backed up a bit. We almost left due to the wait time, but glad we stuck it out.
google avatar

Doug B.

Yelp
Here's a thought - if you advertise that you are open until 9 pm on a Monday, don't turn me away at 8:45. All I wanted was a beer. I could have easily finished it in 15 minutes. Good to know for my next trip into town. I'll go somewhere else.
google avatar

Autumn D.

Yelp
Stopped in to grab dinner with a few coworkers. This restaurant is so cute and sits right on the river. We tried the poutine as an appetizer which was delicious, my only wish it that it had a little less gravy. For dinner I tried the mushroom sandwich (with Gouda instead of vegan cheese) and it was amazing. Our server was friendly as well! I hope to come back the next time I am in town!
google avatar

Jennifer L.

Yelp
I've been going to the Ewe a long time, mostly because it was one of the only places in town to get good, thoughtful vegan food. Unfortunately, that has been falling off steadily for a few years now. This last trip, we went for brunch. I called ahead to make sure there were vegan brunch items available. We get there and I order vegan brunch tacos. Right before bringing my boyfriend's food to the table, the server comes to the table to tell me "the vegan egg for the tacos isn't working" so I had to pick something off the regular menu on the fly. The mushroom melt was fine, but not brunch food and definitely not a value at $16. It's just sad to see a place that used to have such great, thoughtful food move away from that.
google avatar

Julio C.

Yelp
This brewery is fun. I have been going there for quite some time and finally decided to give them a review. Ambiance: low key and chilled. If you're a fan of a good brew, this is the place for you. It's a good spot to meet after work, as long as all your friends like beers as it only serves that. Food: is what gives it a 3. It is very inconsistent. The portions are never the same, and flavor varies a lot. The brisket tacos used to be a hit, until they changed the meat. Please go back to the original recipe. Service: attentive and friendly.
google avatar

Leona K.

Yelp
The vegan food was amazing. Some of the best I've ever had. The waitress was knowledgeable and nice. The atmosphere is modern but comfortable.
google avatar

Bianca J.

Yelp
THIS PLACE IS AMAZING!!!!!!! If I could give more than 5 stars I absolutely would. Everything we ate and drank today was absolutely delicious, and my fiancé and I are big on barbecue. The pulled pork was our favorite part of the meal and was quite possibly the best pulled pork I've ever had. The cauliflower appetizer was also exceptional. The brisket and sprouts were still very very good but not as amazing as the other dishes in my opinion. I also tried the barley wine and bought a can of it to have at home another night. The staff was all extremely friendly and engaging. All staff wore masks and social distancing was enforced. We will definitely come back next time we are in South Bend!

Yelp
BEWARE of the Gluten We came for the first time and were seated in the upper area. It was a nice view with a nice atmosphere. The story about this place (which you will see on other reviews) is that just about everything is gluten free. Visiting with a friend that has celiac disease, she highly recommended we ate here. We made it very clear to the server that we needed gluten free. The food we ordered was just ok, not bad just nothing to bring you back quick. My friend ordered a sandwich and was reassured that it would be gluten free. Half way through the meal she commented how good the bun tasted because i do not like most gluten free bread products. That surprised me so I asked the server to make sure it was gluten free. After a few minutes he came back apologizing that it was not. My friend being pregnant, her husband was a little upset. The manager was ok but at no point refused any blame for the mess up (afraid we were going to sue?) but did blame the server. I normally do not write reviews like this BUT because they are so well known for their Gluten Free menu this needs to be written.

Yelp
We visited this place while visiting family here as we are from Texas. When we travel, we always look for new places to try. This place sits on a great location next to the water. The beer was amazing and the service was amazing. Place is great to bring your kids as well. Go visit this place!!

Brian G.

Yelp
Good food, went in around lunch. Need to go again. I had the poutine and my mom liked the gravy.
google avatar

Kryston H.

Yelp
Good food, good beer. Expensive tho'. Service has always been excellent. Nothing more to add

Stephanie M.

Yelp
What a cute brewery! We stopped here for the night during our trip to Denver and we're really glad we looked this place up. The beers are super reasonable (ours were all about $5 a piece which is NOT a thing in the east coast) and the food was delicious. My husband and I got an order of the Elote Hushpuppies. A+ 10/10. He ordered the the Papaya Salad with Pork Fat? I think it was? Either way he really enjoyed it and said he honestly could have gotten it just as the Papaya Salad and would have been happy. I had the Pulled Pork Tacos and those bad boys were thick. 3 tacos double torted up. And everything drizzled with cilantro? Ugh, marry me. Super happy with everything

T D.

Yelp
I was in the restaurant yesterday. I appreciate the atmosphere and the burger I got I would consider it just okay. The beer was very good. The thing that surprised me most was that they charged me $2.00 for ketchup. The one in a cup that came with the burger was very watered down. I asked for a new ketchup. The server brought out 2. I did not realize until I had paid the bill that I was charged for the 2 he brought. I guess I am wondering why if there was an extra charge it wasn't explained before billing for it.

Yelp
Great drink great food! After a very hard day my sister and came here and had such a great dinning experience between the helpful waitresses and the helpful bartender and the beautiful sunset views. It was magic. I wish I would have taken more photos of the food but I was just wrapped up in this place.
google avatar

Scott B.

Yelp
Good food and beer. Had the burger and the smoked baloney sandwich. The burger was good but the fries were really good. I think it was the ketchup that made the fries good. The smoked baloney had a really good smoke flavor. I would like to try more of their smoked selections.
