The Best Breweries In DC - Washington DC - The Infatuation

"Crooked Run is one of the only breweries in the US making beer that adheres to traditional Belgian Iambic specifications, which will thrill the beer nerd in your friend group (less so the rest of you). Still, their brews are locally inspired, like the Drupulet, a framboise-style sour made with Virginia-grown raspberries and malted barley. Crooked Run is a great place to stop in before grabbing dinner elsewhere in the market, but their thick, doughy pizzas are not to be missed." - madeline weinfield

The 10 Best Breweries In DC

"If you’ve never been to Crooked Run Fermentation, this is your sign to go find the brewery that's hidden on the corner of Union Market. You’re almost guaranteed to get a seat at long family-style tables of the Virginia-based brewery, which is as popular for dates as it is with families. I love this place. I was on my way out of town, had a few hours to kill and had an amazing bartender in Amanda. The beer is phenomenal, the wings were to die for! So awesome. My only complaint, I REALLY wish they would have had some "Cold like war" in cans for me to take home. Can't wait to return to DC and stop by again.

Decent beers and pizza! Lots of TVs to watch games and all. Lots of seating and you order at the bar. Overall a good quick stop for a drink but there are better breweries in DC

Crooked Run Fermentation Review: Fun Vibes and Great Beers Crooked Run Fermentation offers a fun atmosphere with friendly staff, making it a great spot to enjoy a beer. You can also order pizza to go along with your drinks, enhancing the experience. My favorite beer is the mango sticky rice, though it's rarely in stock anymore. The place has a cool vibe, and they often host vinyl nights on Thursdays. Overall, it's a fantastic spot for a relaxed evening with good beer and good company.

This place is good vibes all around. Even when it's packed it's not too loud and the music is a reasonable volume. The staff are very friendly. Beers and pizza are good. They were playing women's basketball on the big TV and buffy the vampire slayer on a smaller TV which I think are perfect choices for a bar on a Friday night!

Good beer, great pizza - what more can you ask for? Stopped in on a Friday evening for suds and a slice, but the bartender clues us in to the happy hour deal so ended up with a bargain dinner (12oz beer +2 slices for $12 til 6pm). Nice medium-big indoor space with seat-yourself tables and a bar. Family friendly as well with high chairs available. It was a bit too chilly on this day, but looks like they have a garage door that open up to an outdoor patio space as well. Casual brewery atmosphere, music at a comfortable level, staff was super friendly. Great spot! Solid cheese slice and really enjoyed the ‘cream of the crop’ with kale and onions.

Local beers served near Union Market. Nice small brewery with pizza and wings as well. Many varieties on tap with different size glasses as well. $5:00 dollar slices or whole pies starting at around $22:00. They have mid week specials like movie night and trivia.

We’ve had a great visit here. Our bar tender Amanda was extremely attentive. We didn’t only enjoy the delicious pizza and tasty IPAs, but also joyful conversations about the DC area since it was our first time visiting Washington and we needed some inspiration what to explore next. Thank you Amanda for your time and greetings from Germany!😊

Was able to check out the opening weekend of Crooked Run and I highly recommend. Beer: high quality brews with a lot of range and selection. Pilsners, IPAs, Sours, Porters, Stouts etc. They even feature an English cask Porter on tap. Definitely worth a try through the menu. Pizza: really tasty and pair well with the beers. Sort of like the thickness and sauce/cheese combo of a Detroit style pizza but with a much lighter and airy crust. Space: a sort of modern, minimalist, almost Scandinavian vibe. Understated. A lot of table space and bar space - perfect for bringing a group. There are multiple screens as well for games etc. Check it out! Glad to see another brewery in the union market district.

Yelp
We love Crooked Run and J&J's. It's a fun and welcoming environment. They have a large TV for watching a game. The beer is unique and delicious. The wings (especially the mambo and buffalo) are great! The bar tenders are friendly. Overall, it's a great spot to drink a beer with friends! Please go check it out!

Yelp
Crooked Run / J&J Pizza is pretty good. They have a cool space with a large window that opens garage style, standard indoor seating, and some outdoor seating. The beer menu is pretty large, with about 17 drafts available, mostly lagers, IPAs, and sours, and a few unusual styles. Food is pretty standard; mostly wings and typical New York style pizza. I visited a few times last year when they had the old pizza menu, which I preferred because it was more interesting. Their current pizza is fine, but New York style is nothing special, and theirs isn't as good as nearby Andy's Pizza. They have a good happy hour: $12 for two slices pizza (cheese or pepperoni) and one 12oz beer, Monday to Friday from open to 6 PM. On my most recent visit on a Monday early evening, the place was pretty quiet and empty. We got the happy hour deal with good pepperoni pizza, and I liked that the slices were huge -- much bigger than I expected. Beer was good as it usually is. When I ordered, I tried to redeem some loyalty credit on the Toast app, but the bartender didn't know how to do this and basically shrugged it off. He was the only one working (so no one else to ask for help) and showed no interest in actually helping me, so I paid and will try again another day. If you're going to have a loyalty program, you need to train your staff how to use it.

Yelp
Great pizza and great trivia! Literally what else can you ask for? Their Buffalo chicken pizza was absolutely outstanding and was just as good, maybe even better, cold the next day!

Yelp
Great new brewery that adds to the DC beer scene! Seating is open with a large bar. It feels a bit like an science lab but with so many things to look at. Large TV for watch parties. They have a large outdoor patio area that looks great for groups! They have a $16 pizza (cheese or pepperoni) and beer combo which applies to most of their lagers and traditional beers. Our favorite beer was their Jake-O-Lantern which kicked while we were there - so happy we got to try it! We also really liked their Oktoberfest beers. I found the menu to be well organized. For the non beer drinkers they have wine and cider, and for the non drinkers they have a whole section of options as well! Service was great, the staff knew their beer selection well and was able to give recommendations based on what you like. Looking forward to coming back!

Yelp
We went here on a Friday night and it was easy to find a seat. They have seating outside and also can open the window for the inside. We got a bunch of samplers and none of them were really impressive. Not the best brewery in DC but the staff were super friendly.

Yelp
Nice spot in the Union Market area if you want a beer. They have a solid selection with tons of varieties. I tried their stout, which is super smooth and creamy, very good. The inside is a bit sterile, but they have a lovely little patio outside. They serve J&J Pizza if you want a snack, and it hits the spot.

Yelp
Pretty good beer selection. They were out of the original one I wanted but bar tender helper with a similarish option. Also got their pizza which was a good size, they also sell by the slice. Staff was nice and knowledgeable definitely excited to be doing the job they're doing. We sat at the bar but there is lots of options for seating including outside. My only complaint is there is only one spot to order from which maybe has changed since i was there last. Overall would recommend, looking forward to going back and trying more things!

Yelp
They just opened a week-ish ago at this location in Union Market. I live in Richmond and they distribute here, but it seemed like a cool stop to make with a group of beer lovers from other places too. Our party of five squeezed into a 4-top. It was a very family friendly environment with strollers and babies surrounding us. They have the ordering system via Toast where you scan the bar code on your table and they bring your stuff out. We weren't there long when the sun landed straight in my face through the garage door windows. I noticed they had sunglasses on their menu, which seemed cute, so I ordered some. It took ages and me getting up to check on them to find out they were out of stock. I was super bummed, but our server was so so nice and comped a couple tasters and then a friend switched seats with me. I do hope they have blinds on order or that place is going to be a sauna in the summer. Beers didn't take long to arrive to our table and checking out via Toast was super easy. I had the two sours I hadn't already tried in the past, plus two pilsners (surprisingly good, I'm not usually a fan) and an English mild on cask. The space is small and pretty loud when full. It's a good stop in the area for tasty beer.

Yelp
The first brewery in the Union Market area, Virginia-based Crooked Run Fermentation offers a variety of beers, sours and a hard cider on tap in a relaxed space. Located on the bottom of one of the new apartment buildings, here's what you should know. 1) Beer: They sell a variety of beers on tap from IPAs to lagers to sours that come in 6, 12 or 20-ounce glasses. As a sour and hard cider fan, I was happy to see two sours on tap and a hard cider. The cider is on the drier side and the Raspberry Empress wasn't very sweet or sour. However, the Merrang! was the winner. It's a sour with unique flavors and a semi-sweet thread. I'd go back for the Merrang! 2) Food: Pizza Serata from a Michelin star chef sells salads, sandwiches, pizzas, and dessert. It's a well-curated menu. The grilled treviso salad is flavorful and delicious! The pizzas are well put together and unique. Sliced in four pieces, the crust is thick and the ingredients flavorful. The Hot + Bothered with the Calabrian chili oil and honey was tasty! (The honey is not overpowering.) 3) Hours: It's open every day at 11:30 a.m. and closes at 10 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and 12 a.m. Friday and Saturday. 4) Space: It's one large room with bar seating and many tables from small to large for groups. Once it's summer, they hope to open a dog-friendly outdoor patio. They have uni-sex restrooms and one has a baby-changing table. 5) Parking: There's limited street parking so your best bet is the Union Market lot or the underground parking garage at La Cosecha. 6) Neighborhood: Near Union Market and La Cosecha, there's lots to do in the area. Across the street is A Litteri, an Italian market with a deli in the back. Best Kitchen is close where you can find gems for your kitchen at more affordable prices.

Yelp
Fun and airy spot with a solid cooler of to-go options, super friendly staff/ownership, and great pizza and wings to pair with the beer selection. The rotating taps are fun and not overwhelming, making for easier selections and a fun imbibing experience. Cheers!

Yelp
Came on a Friday around 7pm and had a nice time! They have a good amount of seating, about ~10 tables for seating plus 3-4 tables for standing, rows of stools on the sides and back and seats at the bar. We found a seat easily and someone quickly came over to greet us and explain how things work and bring water. You can order from the counter or from your phone. They have paper menus but the most up to date menu is through toast tab. I had a sour called "cherish" which was fruity with notes of vanilla and white chocolate. Awesome sour! On the sweeter side but still really good. Nothing else really caught my attention but they have some lagers, IPAs, and stouts. My friend had one of the pilsners and stouts. Both were just okay for me. No wheat beers. They also have some slushies and other non-beer drinks available. It would cool if they start doing flights in the future but you can do a small pour as a taster which is nice. Food wise their menu is a lot bigger than expected. I got the pizza which was awesome. It's a high rise dough so super light and airy. It's a good sized personal pizza but you could share between two people for something lighter. Overall really nice time. Super attentive staff and service, and really great food. Not a bad beer selection. Only real downside is the pizza is pretty expensive for a personal pizza. It's about $17-20 but really should be $12-15. Still good though! There are a lot of breweries in NE with more interesting/adventurous beer selections but Crooked is a good choice if you want something on the more simple side.

Yelp
Chill place: we sat at the bar on a Saturday afternoon, the bartenders let us pick the vinyl records to play. We chatted with them while we enjoyed a bunch of 6oz pours. Staff are friendly, knowledgeable and relaxed. The beer: lots of variety, nothing mind-blowing but very crowd pleasing. We ended up taking two 4packs home, one of them we bought without tasting since it wasn't on tap. I think that says a lot. We trusted we'd like it based on how much we liked the others we tried and the recommendation of the bartenders. Food: gotta go back, it smelled great! We ended up going to Union market afterwards instead, just around the corner!!

Yelp
This is a great place to grab drinks and delicious pizza (also LOVED the Caesar salad). what I loved most is that they don't just make beer- they also had a great selection of natural wines on the menu! Would be a great place to bring a large group.

Yelp
My family and I were really excited to celebrate my husband's birthday here. My husband and I try the beers and my little humas were excited to try the pizza and food we've heard great things about. Sadly, when we walked in, we were told the kitchen wasn't open today. A bummer at 6pm with hungry kids. The staff was nice and pleasant about explaining the situation. They advised that they partnered with Yasmine inside of the market They have QR codes on the tables for ordering and the food will be delivered over. While I think that's a great option and I like the food at Yasmine, my family and I were looking forward to pizza tonight. Hopefully, we'll have another chance to visit. I suggest updating the website or Instagram or yelp to share about the kitchen only being open on certain days.

Yelp
Love this local establishment. Awesome beer. Ample parking and trivia night! Just perfect. Hugeeeee mozzarella sticks and awesome wings.

Yelp
The food and service was excellent. The kitchen closes early - 8:00 pm on Sunday. My concern is I believe we were over charged about $40. My wife paid for the meal plus two small souvenir glasses($8). 4 beers, two sandwiches, a salad, one order of French fries, and pizza for the kids.....$170.30.

Yelp
A real city brewery. Seem to be new or at least recently renovated. I tried their seasonal IPA and it was not bad. They accept Apple Pay.

Yelp
We had some great beer here and the Chicken wings were mmm mmm good! Service was great and the ambiance was really nice too. I would go back again for sure !

Yelp
Really great addition to the Union Market area! I loved the Heart and Soul IPA. I was expecting some growing pains since this place just opened, but service was really great. The beers were at our table a minute after we ordered. They let us know when we walked in that food would take 20-30 minutes, but it actually came out faster. Which brings me to the pizza. I'll also be dreaming about the Unicorn... basically a huge fluffy focaccia pillow with delicious sauce, veggies, and honey (and something had a little kick). Will be back!

Yelp
I have been a faithful Crooked Run customer for the last few years, but this new location was a huge let down. We waited a long time to simply be acknowledged, with employee after employee looking at us and we were only spoken to when I asked if we were in the right place to order. Overall, the beer is the same as you'd get at the other locations - delicious. The staff simply are not friendly or customer oriented. Additionally, the atmosphere is severely lacking and comes across as cold and sterile - it feels as though they did not stick to their roots. Next time I will drive 30 miles to get to the other locations.

Yelp
We went on their opening weekend at their new location, so it was quite busy. We had to wait a while, but we stood around and drank beers while we waited for a table so it wasn't too bad. I sympathize for the staff because it was packed. They were kind and attentive. At the end of the night, after hundreds of guests, when I went to close my tab, the staff (Allison) remembered my name. That's a nice touch. The beer was excellent. I especially liked the melange and the mango sticky rice. We had the artichoke dip, salad, and several small pizzas. All of the food was solid. The pizza is thick crust, but very light and crispy. I would like to try the sandwiches in the future. It's about time that Union Market got a brewery. I'm excited for this location and look forward to when the novelty dies down and we can walk up and grab a table with ease!

Travis L.

Yelp
Good addition to the neighborhood but effectively $9 for a 16oz pour means I'll probably only be back for happy hour.

Yelp
The best fried mozzarella sticks I've ever had. The staff are super friendly and helpful. Great beer!

Kobie N.

Yelp
Great sandwich... my goodness. Quality beer and if you like good music the playlists is on fire. Service is too notch. They know their business. Ill be back.

Ben M.

Yelp
The pizza and beer are pretty good, though they were out of half the IPAs when I was there. Honestly, the service really brings this place down. I noticed many of the beers were poured with too much foam, there were ridiculous surcharges on things any decent restaurant would include and the general attitude was "get your own sh*t." Ordinarily, I'd be okay with the "you're in your buddy's basement attitude", but at these prices I would expect a little more service.
google avatar

Gabe G.

Yelp
They serve craft beer and deep dish pizza. You have to order through an app, but the wifi is password protected. The password is not posted on the walls. So you would need to get a server's attention. Good luck with that. The staff here first greeted by telling us that the large party reservation we had made was nonexistent. The first group to arrive were seated at a 6 top they were told was an 8 top. How you don't know the size of tables in a restaurant is a mystery. They ran out of printer paper which they use to print tickets. Without printed tickets we sat without drinks or food. We spilt our large party between two table after lurking for other diners to leave. Rude, i know, but remember we went in thinking we had a large table reserved. When our food came it was dropped on the table. The server ran off before we could mention the lack of plates or flatware. Judge me if you will, but deep dish requires a fork and knife. When we did get someone's attention, they dropped a fistful of forks and knives in a pile on the table. Later, we got plates, only some were still wet., When one (us),party on the multiparty check system needed to leave first, the system would've let us pay for just our part until everyone else paid. Bottom line, order to go if you want to eat here. The service is entirely below par.

Yelp
Amazing place to grab delicious beer and pizza near Union Market! I have been a huge fan of Crooked Run since their original location in Leesburg and their expansion into DC does not disappoint. Definitely check this place out!

Colenso S.

Yelp
Was excited to check this out given the new opening in DC. Pros: New space, near Union Market, craft beer is always a good thing. Cons: It's too small for the area and crowding is expected. You will always wait for a beer. The ordering system is a line, or an app-based line if you are seated. It is very slow. It took me 16 minutes to get a beer. It was warm on arrival. Food- the pizza is bad. Think foccacia with some sauce. Overall: the focus is no longer on the beer and the quality of your beer experience will suffer accordingly. If you are interested to really focus on the beer, go to the other locations and avoid Union Market.
