I don't know how we missed this place! The Dan Dan Noodles and Dry Sauteed Beef with Chili were both delicious. The beef was definitely the highlight – very crispy and spicy, shredded in small pieces. The Dan Dan Noodles were numbing and mildly spicy, although I could have gone for noodles that were slightly less cooked. Both were very generous portions, for reasonable prices. Great service, including a water fill-up!

Crouching Tiger in Redwood City is a good choice for a big group gathering. They have a ton of spacious tables perfect for family-style dining, and our service was fantastic. The staff was friendly, attentive, and kept our water glasses full throughout the meal. Unfortunately, the food itself was a bit of a mixed bag. The Vegetarian Manchurian house special had a decent sauce, but the Manchurian itself was a bit soggy on the inside. It felt like it had been sitting in sauce for a bit too long. The egg fried rice with BBQ pork was another letdown. The rice was undercooked, and the BBQ pork itself was bland and lacked the smoky sweetness you would expect. The hot iron plate style chicken had so much potential, but the execution fell flat. They put the chicken on top of the crispy rice, which sounds good in theory, but it meant the rice got soggy almost immediately. By the time you got to the rice, it was all mushy. Overall, Crouching Tiger is a good option for a large group with friendly service, but the food needs some work. I'd recommend sticking with simpler dishes and maybe skipping the sizzling plate options.

Google
What a treat! The food is phenomenal and at the right price. Authentic Chinese cuisine right at the heart of the Peninsula. This restaurant is definitely not your Americanized Chinese food. We're talking about a proper authentic meal at a somewhat rundown place which just adds to the experience. Absolutely will return.

Google
Nothing special about the place considering the high reviews. The food was average and there wasn't really anything that stood out. You can get this kind of food anywhere. It had a clean but basic interior with two cute tiger statues outside.

Google
Really good food, served in generous portions. I will happily return! However, the service is brusque and efficient, more than accommodating and elegant. Go for the food and forgive the atmosphere!

Google
Had a birthday celebration here. Their newly-renovated outdoor platform was nice. Ample space to do a magic show and buffet lunch for crowd of 60 inside and outside. Thumbs up for service, food and atmosphere. The owner, Tonia, was very friendly and accommodating. Only posting pics before the crowd due to privacy.

Google
Great food and service. Had the eggplant with black bean sauce, hot and sour soup and chili shrimp dish. All delicious. A little noisy sitting on terrace due to Caltrain tracks just behind the restaurant

I was visiting a friend in San Francisco, four of us had lunch just so before my flight back to Houston. Absolutely loved the food! The dry shrimp and boiled fish was deliciously warm and spicy, just the right heat you need especially on a chilly day. Customer service is great as well and we didn’t have to wait long for our food.

Yelp
A "Kung Pao Chicken" restaurant, not really a Sichuan one. When you see a lot of non Asian it should be obvious

Yelp
2/21/2025: we had a small bday and the restaurant went beyond and above Amazing service amazing food amazing everything can't wait to go back thank you

Yelp
*Vegetarian Foodie Review* Hidden gem alert! I'm so glad I finally discovered this place, thanks to a recommendation from my vegetarian friend who works in Redwood City! As a vegetarian craving Chinese food, I was blown away by the numerous options. The menu was overwhelming (in the best way possible!) and it took me a while to decide. Parking was a breeze, and the ambiance was exactly what I love about Chinese restaurants. I ordered the vegetarian chow mein with tofu, requesting it to be spicy and with less oil. It was ABSOLUTELY DELICIOUS! What impressed me most was the clear distinction between veg and non-veg options, a rarity in Chinese restaurants. My 4-year-old enjoyed the mild egg fried rice with veggies, and I loved watching her devour it! And let's not forget the adorable touches - the lion figurine near the entrance is super cute! Service was super fast, which was a pleasant surprise! A must-visit for vegetarians and Chinese food lovers! Can't wait to come back and try more dishes.

Yelp
I appreciate how there is an entire section on the menu for vegetarian and vegan options. the food is good, simple and well balanced in flavor. I can also order without onion or garlic. however it is a little on the pricier side judging from the simplicity of some of the dishes. the mock meats tend to be on the saltier side and the vegetables on the lighter side, which I like what i've tried and would order again: vegetarian xing jiang lamb stir fried wintermelon stir fried potatoes house special sichuan cold noodles

Grace X.

Yelp
I ordered kung pao vegetables for a delivered work lunch order. The order arrived in one of those waxy paper Chinese takeout boxes, and the sauce had leaked out of the container and soaked the utensils and fortune cookie that were in the plastic bag with it. When I opened the box the oil/sauce went up to around halfway. The food itself tasted okay, fairly flavorful although not very spicy like I would expect kung pao to be. The prices seem to be slightly lower than other restaurants but the portions are also not very big. It's nice that they offer vegetarian meat on the menu, but I have seen conflicting info online about whether it is vegan. I emailed them to ask about their vegan options and did not receive a response.

Yelp
We heard a lot about this place so we decided to give it a try. The food is tasty and the service is good, fast, and friendly. We sat next to a group with 2 young kids who were very noisy and it looked like they had food fight! That family messed up the ambiance! The floor around the table was so messy and a few of the servers were sighing and looked at them with disdain. I would have done the same since the parents didn't seem to try to discipline the kids or at least try to teach some manners. Price wise it's relatively cheap for today's standard. 8-9'dishes for less than $200 incl taxes and tips.

Vanny K.

Yelp
It's our first visit to this restaurant. We were seated right away. We both had the lunch special - I had the orange chicken and my coworker had the Kung Pao shrimp. They come with a choice of fried rice or steamed rice in a separate bowl. The portion was quite generous that I had more than half to go. The food was tasty. I will certainly be back when craving for Chinese food at work.

Dhruti P.

Yelp
I ordered the spring rolls and vegetarian chow mein noodles. While the flavors were decent (nothing extraordinary), the portion sizes were massive! Even after eating as much as I could, it felt like I barely made a dent in the noodles. I appreciated the dedicated vegetarian section on the menu, which offered a wide variety of dishes both with and without fake meat options. We visited on a quiet Wednesday evening and were seated right away, thanks to the restaurant being fairly empty. Overall, it's a solid spot for large portion sizes, but as someone who loves spice, I felt the food could use more flavor.

Grace C.

Yelp
Quick edit: I've been back two times since posting and consistently great experience. Tried the Magic Chili Beef, a new favorite. Crunchy peppers add a nice texture but it's those little ones that bring the heat How have I not been here before when I'm in the area all the time?! If you've somehow missed this restaurant too, it's worth a visit. This spot will now be on heavy rotation for me. My favorite was General Zao's Prawns. Had a light breading on it and tangy sauce. The chow mein noodles had a good chewiness (homemade?) and were a close second. I was too hungry to mix up the noodles so you could see the meat and vegetables but they're there. Loved the food and I was surprised at the larger portions. They didn't compromise quality for quantity. Our service was quick and friendly. Another surprising delight was the sound levels inside. Not sure if I just got lucky and there weren't loud talkers or they've put thought into sound design. The music was just loud enough to hear it (not overbearing, which some folks mistake volume for vibe and over do it) so you could easily hear the folks you're sitting with without talking so loud that other tables are subject your conversation.

Yelp
Went for Weekday Lunch Special Food - 5/5. Soup had good flavor being savory with hints of spice and a good level of sour. The chunky tofu pieces were good for texture. Double cooked pork was fantastic having a meaty texture with rich flavors from the wok hei. Seasoning was excellent, the vegetables made everything aromatic, and the bits of douchi acted like little flavor bombs. Fried rice was beautifully simple, having the stir-fried flavor with limited oil. Salad was simple with a sweet sesame dressing. Chow mein had good bite on the noodle but a little too much oil. The lack of any specific flavor in the chow mein made the heavy oil taste stand out more. Service - 4/5. Quick and efficient service. Some of the staff didn't seem to be able to communicate, but service was still rendered efficiently. Value - 5/5. The pork lunch combo, which includes the soup, salad, and fried rice along with the entree was only $11! Portions were gigantic with plenty of meat. The side of chow mein was only $2, with huge portions for such an affordable price. Amazing lunch special! Parking - Street (Metered)

Yelp
The food is delicious and our go to for delivery. They follow delivery and order instructions better than any other and customizations are easy and more than fair. We love the food, especially the soups (wonton, egg flower), the mushu chicken and all the traditional dishes like the dry spiced chicken. Delicious!

Jean B.

Yelp
Some of the dishes are really salty like the lamb and salt and pepper pork chop. But the rest if good, we went there on Christmas Day. Not expensive at all. I'll give 3-1/2 stars.

Grace M.

Yelp
We dined on a Thursday it wasn't very busy due to rain. However we were kindly waited on and served in a timely manner. The bathrooms were also clean! There is a front and back entrance and pickup is on the left side of the front entrance when you walk in about halfway through the restaurant. (Saw many people confused by this) They have many dishes that are classic takeaway options. We didn't try anything too spicy but will have to when I return. We ordered the double mushroom chicken, veggie and brown rice fried rice, pan fried pork dumplings, and scallion pancakes( who doesn't love fried dough?) . Everything was tasty and as expected. This may be become a regular takeaway spot if I'm in rwc!

Vy N.

Yelp
Service was decent. We got 3 dishes: string beans, magic chili tofu and cumin lamb. The string beans were a bit soggy, but not too terrible. The tofu and lamb tho, they were quite unpleasantly seasoned: very salty. It was a quiet night before nye, the ambiance was enjoyable.

Yelp
Usually order takeout for work from here but wanted to try it as a dine in. This is one of the better takeouts I've had in the area. Very spacious laid back restaurant with a bar. The service was quick and food came out quickly. Didn't realize how big their portions are or else we wouldn't have ordered so much food! But at least we had plenty of leftovers. Plates are definitely shareable. Hot and sour soup- ordered a small and it could have fed 2-3 people. It was a good starter. Walnut Prawns- this is my go to order! My favorite dish they have and it's seasoned/ sauced very well. Definitely recommend trying this one out. Taiwan style rice noodle- did not enjoy this one as it was extremely salty and that's all you could taste. Not sure if we got an extra salty dish but I do not recommend this one. Xingjiang lamb- had a very good flavor. You could taste the cumin but it was alittle too overpowering for me. My bf still enjoyed it, but I personally would pass on it. Dumplings- these were just average and nothing special. Rolling lettuce wraps- has alot of chicken and flavored well. This was more of an entree than an appetizer. Would recommend! Overall, I ended up trying new things I usually don't order and will probably stick to my order of walnut prawns, lettuce wraps and combination fried rice!

Yelp
Let me preface everything by saying this is not a place for anyone who doesn't like/can't handle some spice. I'd had lunch plates from here catered for work and hadn't thought much of it. Then I came with my coworkers to dine in, and I changed my mind. Definitely recommend coming with a group and ordering family style rather than getting a quick combo plate. Some of my coworkers' go tos include: -Magic chili prawns: This dish looks like it's drowning in chilis--the menu lists red chilis, jalapeños, pepper, AND magic chili crackers--but it's actually not as spicy as you'd think. The biggest chilis (the chili "crackers") are not spicy and are a great crunchy snack. Loved the shrimp, and I ate the chili crackers by themselves after we finished the shrimp -Mapo tofu: Would go well with some rice. Second spiciest dish after the boiled fish. -House special Szechuan cold noodles: This and the prawns were my two fav dishes. You can choose to get it with ground pork, chicken, or vegetarian, and it comes with some julienned cucumbers. It was a refreshing reprieve to all the other spicy dishes (though it's still mildly spicy itself). -Green beans: Good, but not that different from your typical dry-fried green beans at any other Chinese restaurant -Spicy boiled fish: The name is pretty on point. It's pieces of fish boiled/poached in a chili oil served in a hot metal tureen thing. Another pretty spicy, but very flavorful, dish, and the temperature of the fish in the metal pot amps up the heat. Love that we can order online and have the food ready for us when we come for lunch. Service is pretty typical--you'd definitely fare better coming with someone who speaks Chinese.

Sarah S.

Yelp
To go experience: I tried the walnut shrimp, tofu with beef, salt and pepper fish, and twice cooked pork. Everything was delicious! The fish was crisp and was my favorite of those that I tried.

Christina N.

Yelp
I'm definitely a spicy level of mild type of person. And boy this was hot temperature wise and spice level! Started off with hot and spicy soup which was nice since it was cold outside. We ordered magic chili prawns, mapo tofu with pork, house special sichuan cold noodles, string beans, and spicy boiled fish. Everything came out quickly. The food was delicious and flavorful. I would definitely come again and maybe bring some milk to help with the spiciness There was a bit of mix up with our food but the servers were able to correct it. A bit of language barrier but you're here for food and not so much service.

Bella H.

Yelp
Delicious food, wow!!! Really flavorful and well priced. I am now going to make this one of my regular spots. Highly highly recommend!

Rachel R.

Yelp
Pretty goo food! I've been trying to find a good indochinese place in the Bay. This place definitely satisfied my craving. The fried rice and noodles were good, the manchurian veg balls were delicious, and the chicken was cooked well. The menu is huge! This location also has an ABUNDANCE of Veg dishes to choose from. The service was also amazing, the waiter insisted on packing all of out food herself. Overall a good experience and will come back to try more!

Karla P.

Yelp
Food is always good and taste amazing. The service is excellent, and I really like the ambiance. Strongly recommend this restaurant.

Haiyang H.

Yelp
Used to be a regular here many years ago. Hadn't been back for many years. Came back today for a team event. Location here is very nice. Right in the middle of downtown Redwood City. Parking could be tricky but there are plenty of options around. The restaurant stayed mostly the same over the years. It is a Chinese restaurant and sort of traditional. So the decorations are not fancy. Food is pretty good overall. We ordered their house special cold noodles, a couple of veggies and a few proteins. The shrimps are overall okay. The chilly shrimp got a good flavor combination but could use a bit less cooking time. Veggies are both pretty good. The pea shoot is always my fav here. Tender and helps to bring down the heat. The fish stew is slightly greasy but the fish is super tender. Cabbage stir fry is one of my fav here. One of my friends like their dry cooked pork. Didn't order here today but has always been a big hit. Their services here is not the fastest. We waited for a very long time (and after flagging for services many times). But they are friendly and took some photos for us. After orders are placed, food was served pretty rapidly. Overall, their food quality has been pretty consistent over the years. We walked away happy.

Esther C.

Yelp
Parking can be tough around this area. Service is a little slow as they seemed under staffed. Food on the other hand tasted so good, good portions and very affordable.

Betty B.

Yelp
Food: Chow mein (vegetable and beef) - very good. Recently, the beef chow mein came with little to no sauce (inconsistent). Veggie chow mein full of vegetables Sesame chicken - ordered with white meat ($1.00 additional). Lots of sauce, good chicken. Ordered togo, it was fast and portions are large. When eating in, the restaurant is nice and service is fast. Parking is paid by meter. Has tvs but usually on screensavers. Docking 1 star since this was the second time order was inconsistent. (Last time, orange chicken came with a tiny bit of sauce, mostly naked chicken)

Christina O.

Yelp
This place is solid. We don't know the area much and had plans to the Fox Theater in Redwood City. And, this place did not disappoint! The food was pretty great. The beef was great quality but they were certainly not cut up enough. It was a solid piece of thin beef -- with no knife. Service was lacking, they really left us alone and didn't refill tea or water during the duration of our stay (1 hour +) for a party of 7. The location was fantastic! And it was clean. The bathroom was clean as well, which in my mind is a big plus. All in all I would go there again. Price point was decent as well.

Jane T.

Yelp
Visiting Redwood City today, 2 of us were looking for Chinese food near hotel, restaurant located on Broadway a great place to dine for some regular Chinese food. ordered -spicy eggplant 魚香茄子(we asked no spicy) ;human smoked pork 湖南炒臘肉;Singapore style rice noodles新加坡炒米粉, all dishes were all yummy good. families/ friends get together or even just solo with the delicious food and fair in price, yes, I 100% recommended This Chinese restaurant.

dave g.

Yelp
Coughing Tiger has always hit the mark. Maybe not Schezwan, but all of the flavors they offer are clean and not greasy. My favorite is the peanuts and I think it is Daikon they give before the meal. I found this place 10 years ago when I was doing food delivery. Just the shear amount of orders that came from here was crazy.

Christopher L.

Yelp
Nice place, people are nice but the food is terrible. No flavor. We got sesame chicken and orange chicken and both tasted the same- not good. Chow fun was a giant blob. Sauce tasted like a kitchen sink

Kayla P.

Yelp
Our family found this restaurant over a year ago and it has become one of our staples. The food is always so good and we love the huge portions to share. The service is always so attentive and friendly which makes it even better. Definitely recommend the flaming fish

S P.

Yelp
I ordered for delivery and wanted to try something different. As this place had decent reviews - went for it. I don't think I have ever had such bland Chinese food. Usually it's too oily or salty or spicy etc. but there was absolutely no flavor to the dishes. Potstickers were bland. Egg rice was totally unseasoned and tasteless. Spring rolls were small, dough was too thick and had minimal filling. The chicken and vegetables and the fish filets were also super bland and had no sauce. Super bizarre. Maybe it was an off night but for everything to be blah is super disappointing. I guess the pro is that it wasn't oily and the vegetables tasted fresh.

Luke S.

Yelp
The combination fried rice is the best and I love the spices in the food here, definitely not disappointed

Yvonne L.

Yelp
*So I'd like to preface this review by stating I ordered my food on DoorDash 30mins before closing because I was sick and craving soup. That said, I feel some of the issues I had with the food were probably because they tried to get my order out in time before they closed so I'll give them the benefit of the doubt. TL;DR - Quick turnaround for my to-go order and when I received the food, it was still piping hot - Food as a whole was really good, flavorful without being overly oily like most Chinese takeout - Prices are fair with large portions Food Breakdown: - Magic Chili Tofu: Delicious! Loved the addition of various chilis and crunchy chili crackers. The tofu was crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. Its a house special and I can see why. Its just the right amount of spice without being overwhelming. (5/5) - Dry Cooked Fish Filets: Ordered the dry cooked fish filets instead of the Magic Chili option to see what the difference was and I think they added it anyways because the fish also included the peanuts and extra chilis. The fish was crispy without being oily. Similar to the tofu, I really enjoyed it and highly recommend it. (5/5) - Hot and Sour Soup: Very flavorful and lots of tofu, bamboo, mushrooms, etc. However it could be slightly more sour and spicy but overall, it's a solid hot and sour soup. (4/5) - Beef Chow Fun: Flavor was pretty good but the noodles were a little too overdone, making it clump together in the box. Don't get me wrong, it's not bad but I think being crammed into the container whilst hot added steam to the noodles, making it softer than I prefer. I also think it could use a little more sauce and color to the noodles but the beef was perfectly tender. (4/5) - Sautéed String Beans with Garlic and Chili: Taste is there and not overly saucy or oily but a little too cooked, making it limp. (3.5/5) - Sizzling Rice Soup: Unfortunately this fell flat for me and the broth was really bland/lack luster out of the box but nothing a little added chicken bouillon and fish sauce couldn't fix. There was a lot of seafood, veggies and sizzling rice so that made up for the broth issue. I'd probably order it again to see if it was a one off problem. (3.5/5)

Karne N.

Yelp
We've had both takeout dinner from Crouching Tiger, as well as a birthday party at the restaurant. The portions are large, and the variety of choices is good. We particularly liked the orange chicken, the hot and sour soup, the string beans, and the cold noodles. Some of the food is somewhat bland and a bit oily. The service was excellent with our birthday party; we were able to handle a large crowd easily and had lots of leftovers to take home.

Kimberly L.

Yelp
I came in today with my family and couldn't be more happier. The place is beautiful from the inside, menu has multiple options from vegetarian, to the protein of your choice. Portions are large enough. I loved the flavor of the chicken orange and fried rice. My daughter couldn't stop eating the chow main. Everything was delicious. Can't wait to bring my mom, she loves Chinese food.

Tyler S.

Yelp
Quick, efficient service. Very tasty food. Only 4 stars because the mixed veggie dish my wife got was gross - everything else amazing!

Jaky Y.

Yelp
Came for dinner on a weekday. We ordered the mapo tofu which was tasty and generous. We also got their signature cold noodle which was good. Our last item was the sizzling rice, which we were sadly disappointed by. We thought the dish was going to be actual crispy, sizzling rice but it turned out to be rice crackers with stir fry cornstarch slurry poured on top of it. Probably wouldn't order it again but everything else was good. Service was prompt and friendly, and the restaurant has plenty of comfortable seating.

Nancy C.

Yelp
Quick take: basic Chinese food Nothing fancy about this place. It's all very basic standard fare. Service is decent. Food comes out fast during lunch time. This spot is within walking distance to my job. Prices are good for the lunch menu.

Justin H.

Yelp
Food was dry and flavorless, ordered three dishes and were all quite disappointing especially the scallion beef. It was definitely not what u expected normally scallion beef is a spicy dish in Chinese Chinese but theirs was not even close. Disgusting

Tim S.

Yelp
Ordered via delivery. Food was made to order quickly. The braised fish was EXCELLANT and a large portion. Beef chow fun, nice smokey flavor that is missing sometimes in chow fun. Beef was tender - cooked perfect. Dry cooked chicken wings were delicious - yes there are bones - didn't bother me - so worth it. Nothing bad to say - GO EAT THIS FOOD!

Claire P.

Yelp
I've been going here for YEARS. My favorite dish is the dry cooked beef. I also had the hot and sour soup and that was also pretty good. The cumin lamb is another dish I would suggest. The service is nothing special. I've gone during lunch on a Sunday and it's pretty calm, so I would recommend that if you're looking for a quiet lunch.

Generous Y.

Yelp
Delicious, fairly authentic food but seem to have some communication or service mishaps. I added chicken and pork to my rice and only got what I presume is the base amount of chicken. Because there was no sign of pork, I assume that they completely ignored my requests which was $4 gone. I will say, their lunch specials are a steal. Portions are solid for the price and a healthy balance of food types. Chicken with Broccoli - I had fried rice as my base and it was pretty standard, but hearty and clean. No special additions that try too hard and ruin the rice. Chicken was hearty, fairly lean, and still tender. As a meal, it was a solid 4/5 especially for the portion at this price point. However, lacking my additions while still charging for it is a definitely a pain point.

Ella W.

Yelp
This place is a hidden gem. The portion sizes are gigantic and the prices are very reasonable. When my husband and I order a few entrees for delivery, it usually lasts us like 3 meals (for the both of us.) It is best served family style so you get to try a little bit of everything. This is how me and my friends do it. We have eaten in and taken out. We have liked everything we have tried on the menu. In fact, to explore the menu as a group, we roll dice to decide the entrees to get. We have done this several times and still not ordered something we dislike. A classic must-try is the mapo tofu with rice.

Ofer G.

Yelp
We come here all the time and always enjoy the excellent food, excellent service, and wonderful family atmosphere. Best neighborhood restaurant in Redwood City! Very highly recommended.

Mighty M.

Yelp
I thought the crispy chicken salad was one of the best I had ever had. They clearly make every dish to order here. the chicken was hot and fresh and the vegetables were cold and crisp. I'll be baaaaack.

Deanna Y.

Yelp
Dined here for a for a birthday celebration quite a few months back. I believe we had made reservations in advance. Service was quick and efficient. We ordered about 10 dishes for our large party. My niece ate almost the whole plate of Tofu/fish herself. Although the portions are quite large here and the pricing decent, the food was only mediocre. I felt most of the dishes left something to be desired. I would probably not return.

Ray M.

Yelp
Maybe the best honey walnut prawns I've ever had!! This place was a surprise but I'm glad we went. Everything was good. Leftovers heated up the next day tasted great still. Heads-up! The spicy eggplant is not spicy. It is good but not spicy. The pork chow mein was delicious. Something about the flavor of the noodles that made it special. Go and try this place!

Jessica T.

Yelp
Good food for a good price! I visited on a Saturday afternoon and it wasn't too busy. Me and my friends were seated immediately. I ordered the chicken chow mein and I also got to try the General's Chicken, both of which were really good! The service was good overall. I love the interior design of the restaurant as well! It was pretty quiet so it was a great ambiance for me and my friends to just chat and catch up. Would definitely come back!
