Da Roberto E Loretta - Review - San Giovanni - Rome - The Infatuation

"Saltimbocca is a dish that’s hard to perfect. The veal must be pounded super thin and cooked just right—crispy at the edges without being overdone. The ratio of prosciutto to sage has to be spot on, and the sauce should never be bland. And it’s one of the few Roman recipes that unapologetically calls for butter. Husband-and-wife duo Roberta and Loretta have been perfecting this dish for decades at their spacious, old-school spot in San Giovanni. Their white wine gravy, infused with herby meat drippings, gets poured over tender veal filets and served with a side of roasted potatoes, perfect for mopping up every last buttery drop." - Annie Replogle

What Is Roman Food Anyway? | Eater

"A slightly more formal ristorante with an elegant dining room serving dishes such as mozzarella with truffles and pasta with hunter’s ragu; the owners personally deliver plates and often stay to chat with guests, blending refinement with intimate hospitality." - Giancarlo Buonomo

We had a lovely lunch at Da Roberto e Loretta — a true Roman gem. We started with fried zucchini flowers, which were perfectly crisp and flavorful. The cacio e pepe was excellent — creamy, peppery, and beautifully balanced. The oxtail in tomato sauce was rich and tender, a real highlight. We also tried the baked fish with potatoes, which had a great flavor, though it was a bit on the salty side. Overall, a fantastic meal with warm, attentive service.

We came in for a late dinner. The service was great, we got lovely wine recomendations, the food arrived very quickly. Loved the pasta dishes, the tiramisu was delicious. The best service and meal we had in Rome.

Amazing Pasqua lunch. We couldn’t book but manage to have a table outside, good weather. Food is top notch, very good service from the lady. The Agnello was dazzling 😩 even my mom admitted that it was better than hers! Good wine, fell in love with their artichoke (never taste before). Such an amazing and authentic place. Thank you for treat us that well.

Google
My 3rd time in Rome and I finally learned you have to go into authentic Italian neighborhoods to get the best food. Still, this restaurant would trump them all. The menu is seasonal and small enough to know the food is all home made and cooked to order. The atmosphere was energizing and the service impeccable. Thank you Sara for making our experience so special.

Yelp
Ottimo ambiente, per nulla rumoroso. Cucina con Sapori raffinati e ben bilanciati. Porzioni corrette.

Yelp
oh me oh my. I read a lot of positive reviews and, as I was staying a few blocks away, I was excited to try this place. However, during my experience I was overwhelmed with negative energy and disappointment. The service left everything to be desired. I cut my mouth on the bread, it was so hard and dry although the squash blossoms were ok. The waist staff was strangely rude. The young woman who brought out the food hit my arm with the plates to ask which plate was to go to which person and repeatedly gave me dirty looks throughout the meal whenever she walked by. The pasta was extremely salty and the oily and the fish which was recommended to me was dry. I was starving and ate less than half of the portion. I would never recommend this restaurant and am only leaving a star as it is required in order to leave a review. The only positive thing I can say; the decor and restaurant itself was spacious and pleasant to look at.

Yelp
I just moved to the neighborhood and this was the first restaurant I tried. I arrived just before 8pm and there was no one around. There were plenty of awards listed on the door and the prices seemed reasonable so I felt like I was avoiding a tourist trap. However, given that I look Asian, I stood out like a sore thumb as I was surrounded by Italians, some speaking English but most speaking Italian. My waiter was great; however the other waiters seemed to be laughing that I was sitting alone for dinner, which maybe is a faux puax in Italy, and does not account for business persons traveling alone. When asked for recommendations on dessert, they stated the tiramisu, which was very good. Next time, I will try something else. They did try to push some alcohol on me as "authentic" so I don't think they realized that I was not looking for tourist stuff, but just good stuff. They didn't speak English that well so when I asked for leftovers to be packed up, they did not. My waiter promptly took care of that and asked packed up the delicious bread. I don't think having the boss around helped their nerves. But as for the actual food, it was quite food and reasonably priced. The octopus salad was quite good, with the fresh octopus cooked nicely--not chewy at all. I could have just eaten that because the portion sizes were so large but had already ordered the fish pasta so that was really good--pasta al dente with fresh fish, tomatoeS and olives!

Yelp
Had originally planned to go to a place with a Michelin star but based on reviews that place read too touristy with mixed reviews including that it overcharged and undelivered. However I wanted to check out the neighborhood so I found this place online instead. This place is real Italian, and I'm guessing that most of its clients live or work in the neighborhood, so go if you don't want to hear English spoken next to you. Also go for solid Roman food at reasonable prices and that delivers. Everything was perfect including eating lunch outside in 60 degree Fahrenheit weather in mid-December.

Yelp
This place is very off the heart of Rome, but very much worth your time. We walked there and took a taxi back, the place had ppl waiting to get in right at 7:30pm when it's open. We ordered truffle pasta which was done so perfectly, the lamb shank was tender and dessert (frozen strawberry) was so awesome I loved it! Their fish was a but overdone but aside from that the atmosphere was very romantic. I just adore this place! Roberto and Loretta walking around checking on table'

Yelp
The owners have had this restaurant since 1952 and now their son helps them too. They're in their current location for the past 13 years. Since their location is not near any of the sightseeing their clients are 95% Italians The food is best we had in Italy. Everything is fresh and made with the best ingredients. The son was in his forties and spoke English. He explained to us the whole menu and made great suggestions. He gave us free cheese plates and another appetizer just to show us good Roman food. The ambiance is also beautiful and overall was a great experience.

Yelp
Great food - a little outside of the main touristy areas of Rome. The menu is a mix of traditional Italian cuisine and some things you won't find everywhere in Rome. I had the swordfish and it was excellent. The service is good and I'd go back in a heartbeat as the quality / $ is hard to beat with so many tourist trap / low quality restaurants that you get closer to the main areas of Rome.

Yelp
They served a sad over cooked pasta and also tried to trick us into paying more by writing in their cursive style and even the waiter was unable to confirm why we were paying 14 euros extra and what was written next to it. They corrected it after we asked them. Quite disappointed with the waiter who kept spilling our wine on the table. My friends lamb was hardly edible for him and the potatoes were dry. Tourists are advised caution approaching this place.

Yelp
Our family of three found this place for dinner on YELL with only 4 reviews, but it was close to the apartment we rented for a 1-week stay in Rome. It is a charming family-run restaurant where the owner came to our table to get to know us and help us order. He gave us free starters (fried zucchini). Then my mother had the lamb, I had the eggplant, and my daughter had the stuffed turkey. All three dishes were amazing! For dessert my daughter had the panna cotta with a fruit sauce - she is still talking about it. We highly recommend this place!

Yelp
Outstanding meal, service, and atmosphere. Best meal I had in Rome hands down - probably because I was the only tourist - everyone else was Italian. I ended up going back for lunch after my wonderful dinner experience. This place is off the beaten path and on a quiet little residential street outside the major tourist areas, but well worth the trek. I originally came across it because it was close to a vacation rental I had booked for the final leg of an Italy trip. Interestingly, a different apartment I stayed in at the beginning of my Italy trip, in the Jewish Quarter, recommended this as a place outside the tourist center. The space is fairly large by European standards, which provides a nice relaxed atmosphere. Even though it is frequented predominantly by Italians, they speak English and were very kind and accommodating. The menu is in Italian and English. Attentive service without being overbearing, despite a full and busy dinner service. Nice wine list with several different wines by the glass. They also had a decent selection of half bottles, which was nice as I was dining alone the first time I went in there. I'll definitely be returning next time I'm in Rome.

Yelp
My wife and I headed here after being turned away from another restaurant. We did not know what to expect. But what we got was the best meal we've had in Rome. No reservation. No problem even though it was packed they were able to accommodate us. We had the crispy bass and artichoke roll that was out of the world as a starter and then on to the fettuccine with truffles. My wife doesn't never eats fettuccine but split it 50/50! Then we finished with the eggplant parm. This was by far our best meal in our stay in Rome. Great wine also. If you're ever nearby don't hesitate. Run and get yourself a dynamite meal and service.

Yelp
We had the pasta, fish, ox tail and roast lamb here for lunch. Menus were both in Italian and English. Service was superior and friendly. I thought the roasted lamb was not a strong dish although it was the most expensive one and ox tail could be more tender. Other dishes were good. FYI they charge 4.5 € for basket of bread which I thought was ridiculous. Prices were on a slight higher than other but the I guess you are paying for the good ambiance. All in all, I would give it another shot next time.

Yelp
I went here after reading the amazing Yelp reviews and they did not disappoint! I had some of the best bruschetta I have ever had and was able to try truffles with homemade pasta for a very reasonable price. The wine and ambiance were both amazing. I could not have asked for a more welcoming and delicious restaurant!

Yelp
This gem was recommended to us from our hotel. We were looking for some good pasta and we were not disappointed. My husband had fettuccine with truffles and I had spaghetti with black pepper. You know when you eat something wonderful and you stop talking because it is so good. This was the best pasta I have ever eaten! Highly recommend this restaurant!

Yelp
This place was fantastic, if not quite what we expected. As with all Italian restaurants the portions are huge and you're expected to take multiple courses. What sets this place apart is the quality of the food and the ingredients. I started with the eggplant pasta because I don't care for mushrooms or olives so it was the only choice left, but it was exceptional, with generous portions of baked eggplant draped over and mixed into the pasta. My companion had the mushroom pasta and found it to be exceptional. For our main courses I cannot recommend the lamb highly enough as it was perfectly baked. The outside was crispy without being tough and the meaty interior was soft and delicious. My companion had the rabbit with black truffles which was almost as smooth as pate it was cooked so tenderly. The one thing that isn't accurate about this restaurant is the price. Pasta dishes are 10-16 and main courses are 14-20. Even without wine or appetizers you would be hard pressed to eat here for less than 20 euros, so €€€ is really more appropriate. Also, if possible make a reservation as they keep fairly busy, even on weekdays, and may run out of space. You may want to dress accordingly with the price as well, but they will not refuse your business.

Yelp
Granted, I don't have much to compare it to (aside from lunch at a place I "discovered" on Trip Advisor which was ranked highly as "popular with locals, authentic and reasonably priced" which did not impress me on any of those counts.) But we landed here for dinner out of geographical convenience and not only did they have gluten free pasta (always ask in Italy - Celiac's is prevalent there what with the wheat-heavy diet and all), not only was the food good AND cheaper than our lunch, but Roberto Benigni and Nicoletta Braschi were dining at the next table. Not that we'll be in town long enough to repeat any meals, but I wouldn't object to coming back to this place next time.

Yelp
This restaurant is what I imagined the food in Rome to be. Charming, authentic location and wonderful service, but the most memorable part was the straightforward recipes with high quality ingredients. Roberto is a wonderful host that makes you feel at home. I highly recommend this restaurant!!

Yelp
The best dinner we had in Rome. Genuine roman meals. We had the bacalao antipasti (first on the menu) trippa alla romana, and the artichoke and alici (trimballo). My daughter had the simple but excellent pens with tomato sauce. We also were glad we ordered the Terre Bianca wine from sardegnia. At last we enjoyed the pinaple and the tris di dolci. This is a place that locals go too. A must while in Rome!

Yelp
I went to da Roberto e Loretta for dinner while on a weekend trip to Rome and had an incredible experience. The customer service was exceptional, the food was delicious and environment was unique, and genuine. I went alone and still wanted the opportunity to try different things so I was offered personalized menu options (half sizes, sample sizes) in order to try all the dishes that I was interested in. I would love to go back and would recommend it to people who are looking for a authentic italian meal!

Yelp
I loved this restaurant. The food is delicious and I loved the service. It was my first time having food in Rome and I had a very good first impression for Rome.

Yelp
In Rome from Seattle, ate here on the recommendation of our B&B owner. Place was amazing. We are here three more times over three weeks. Enjoyed the food and service. Everything we tried was 1st class. Never will think the same of Italian food again.

Yelp
We came here when we were on holiday because our host advised it. We ended up eating here two nights in a row, the second night being Christmas eve! The food was wonderful, very regional, we tried a lot of things we never had before even though at home we eat Italian almost every night. Roberto speaks English so we had no trouble ordering. We were the only tourists there and felt like were in a typical local restaurant.

Nick V.

Yelp
This was our last meal in Italy before heading home to the states so perhaps I'm a little biased, but this restaurant was absolutely excellent. The trade off is that it's not very close to the city center. On the bright side this usually means you've avoided a tourist trap, certainly it did in this case. Da Roberto è Loretta is a typical Roman trattoria with a menu of classic Roman dishes and seasonal creations. We started with a nice bruschetta, then had a perfectly al dente plate of spaghetti "cacio e pepe", moved on to rabbit with truffle, and finished with tiramisù. The food and service were both spectacular. I would encourage anyone seeking an authentic Roman meal to hop on the metro (not far from the San Giovanni stop) and make your way to Da Roberto e Loretta.

Yelp
We found this restaurant on Yelp and decided to try it based on the few English reviews available. I'm so glad we did! We were still talking about the meal and service on the last day of our 10 day trip through Italy. The service was fabulous - very considerate and helpful, the food delicious, the wine and desserts fantastic. Not at all a touristy place, but we felt very welcome. I wish we could have eaten here again!
