Last night, my wife and I kicked off the holiday season with a fabulous dinner at Dal Contadino Trattoria in Oakland Park, Fort Lauderdale. From the moment we walked in, the festive holiday decorations and cheerful vibe made us feel like we'd stepped into a Christmas postcard. They even had a musician playing holiday tunes--talk about setting the mood!
We started with the fried calamari, which was perfectly fresh and crispy. It came with lemon and marinara sauce, and while it could've used an extra sauce for variety, we were too busy enjoying it to bother asking. Next time, though, maybe some garlic aioli or spicy mayo on the side?
For the main event, my wife went for the eggplant parmigiana. It was a large portion--seriously, enough for leftovers--served with thin spaghetti pasta. She was in heaven. I had the Troccoli alle Vongole, a dish with thick, chewy troccoli noodles and clams in their shells, all swimming in a rich, garlicky sauce. Bonus points for serving it in the same pan it was cooked in--kept it nice and warm and felt very "straight from the kitchen." One little hiccup: a few broken clam shells snuck into my bites, but hey, minor hazard of the dish!
Dessert? Forget about it--we were stuffed. The price? Totally reasonable at $50 a head, including tax, tip, and drinks. The staff? Super friendly, though maybe a touch overstaffed for the early Friday crowd--there were a few employees just hanging out. Didn't bother us, though; it only added to the laid-back vibe.
All in all, we loved it. Great food, awesome ambiance (that holiday music!), and a cozy, festive feel. Dal Contadino Trattoria nailed it, and we'll definitely be back. Five stars, hands down!
