"The gelato at D’Ambrosio is so delicious that you’ll find it in Italian restaurants that don’t feel like making their own. They use local ingredients, like Fremont Brewing Company beer (in the chocolate porter flavor), and the D’Ambrosio space doubles as an espresso bar in case you want an affogato. No matter what, you’ll want a scoop of the biscotti flavor." - aimee rizzo, kayla sager riley

Google
Pan au gelato… is just a scoop of ice cream in a lukewarm stale hamburger bun lmfao. Made by a dude without gloves. We have had pan au gelato and it’s fantastic. This was laughable. But I must say the gelato itself is fantastic so that counts for something??

Google
I honestly don’t get the hype and popularity of Salt & Straw and find gelato so much tastier! This place says their gelato is authentic straight from Italy, and I believe it. I love the organic Italian chocolate and tiramisu flavors! Very rich and velvety and not too sweet. And they have affogato which is hubby’s favorite. My go-to takeout dessert place in Ballard.

Anusha Kondle

Google
Didn’t like this place during my first visit so I was careful with my order this time. They offer free samples, so definitely make good use of them. Ordered pistachio, hazelnut and fior di latte. Pistachio was good- not very strong on the flavour like most middle eastern sweets. Hazelnut was very nutty and a little strong flavour but I liked it. Fior di latte was very interestingly new to me and would recommend at least sampling for taste.

Google
This gelato is pretty good. I’m not sure what I was expecting but I’d say it was mediocre, does the trick. There was a sorbet option which I was delighted at but unfortunately it was a bit grainy. I didn’t finish it. They do have a bunch of different flavors and the shop is clean. I can’t say that for it.

Abhash Kumar Singh

Google
Cool gelato place. Pistachio is the bomb. Great selection of new flavors. We got pistachio, hazelnut, rose strawberry and blackberry lavender.

Google
The matcha latte came out brownish and tasted extra earthy, the chai tea was quite watery. We threw them in the trash and didn’t even care to go back for a refund.

IvI

Google
Good selection of flavors, the ice cream is OK, a bit less creamy than what one would expect for gelato. Service is a bit slower, and the table we set at wasn't wiped - had some dried up ice cream drips. Two flavors in a waffle cone cost about $7 US

Arif Sukoco

Google
Really good gelato! I've tried Sicilian Espresso, Lavender & Blackberry, Theo Chocolate, Salted Caramel, and Pistachio. They all GREAT! The waffle cone tasted generic and is probably not worth the extra $1. Dine in with proof of vaccination.

Yelp
It's a small mom and pop shop that is clean but sparse on the inside maybe for peak serving times. The Gelato is ok, but quite expensive at $13.50 for a pint and it's not the best pistachio I've ever had but needed a quiet place to think. I might, maybe, rarely, might come back for a fancy date but $13.50 for one pint... that's very expensive for not much value add

Sherry B.

Yelp
I like the flavors that they have, got coffee and lemon and it was a good balance between sweet and sour. Each small size comes with two flavors. One thing that could be improved is that I feel like the sizes of the two scoops are uneven. They use this spatula thing rather than a spoon so the portion of scoops are harder to control. Note: Business hours listed in Yelp is wrong at time of writing, sent in suggestions but I would double check Google for their opening hours for now.

Yelp
I was so excited to enjoy some gelato after dinner around the area and came in here on a rainy evening. Wasn't greeted at all by the very displeased young man who was running the shop. Tried making niceties with the young man who clearly didn't want to The there only to have one word responses back. the final kicker was that for a barely filled small cup of gelato (please see latest photo posted) which came to a whopping $7.70!!!!! with tax and tip (opted for $2 tip even with the terrible service). I could have gotten so much more bang for my buck at any of the ice creameries in the few blocks nearby. I am still reeling at how much this teeny tiny cup was and how little gelato I got. I am super disappointed with my latest experience. I really can't believe how little the cup was filled and he literally scraped any dome that was on the cup back into the tub. Seriously there were air pockets in the cup too that I almost went back to see if they'd give a smidge more but I was mostly scared to interact with that young man again. Will likely never come back which is a shame as it used to be not be so skimpy on the portions nor have such terrible customer service.

Jinny C.

Yelp
As you can tell from the recent reviews, this place doesn't seem to be the same. I got a small scoop for $7.70 and it is just filled up the the cup instead of with a dome. The gelato itself tasted good (I got the pistachio and milk flavors) but I don't think it's worth the price, especially not when Salt & Straw is just down the street.

Vivien L.

Yelp
I came in on a weekday night around 9pm and the store was empty and spacious. There's definitely more space for tables. I sampled the hazelnut and Italian coffee and they tasted good! I ordered those two flavors in a size small in a cone for almost $8. The gelato is extremely smooth, soft, and creamy. Probably the smoothest and softest gelato I've ever tried yet and I've been to Italy! The hazelnut was the better flavor for me, but I'm glad I tried both. The portions were generous for a size small. I'll come back to try other flavors in the future.

Jordan L.

Yelp
Would love to try it, but the hours online are never correct. Maybe one day we will catch ya when they're open

Marcus S.

Yelp
Stopped in here looking for some Frozen desserts since the nearest Ice cream shoppe - Salt & Straw was as predicted out the door. Even though it moves fast over there, sometimes you want to have that sweet treat right away! There was much less of a wait here of course so that can be a good reason to choose here if you're in the area. Also, Gelato still isn't quite up there in popularity as Ice Cream even though it's slightly "healthier". The flavor combinations here are D'Ambrosio Gelato are catching - Tiramisu, Hazelnut, espresso to name a few. I went with the Nutella swirled vanilla. It was quite good. With a few nice chunky pieces of chocolate hidden within. You can get a free little wafer piece to go with your gelato to complete the look and dip or scoop some out of your cup. I've walked by here and hadn't really noticed and it can be missed clustered along the strip but if you're looking for a cool treat come get a D'Ambrosio Gelato

Kyle W.

Yelp
This gelato spot is located in the heart of downtown Ballard, amongst a lot of the restaurants. I sampled a few flavors here including the baseline Fior di Latte to gauge on the quality of the gelato, and the gelato overall is fairly solid. I am a fan of their very smooth, velvety texture of all the gelato flavors, including pistachio. For $6.50+tax, the small is a modest size for an individual to enjoy a serving of gelato. However, when comparing pictures of the past, I felt I got a bit shortchanged with the portion sizes as the pictures indicate the gelato filling way over the cup. Also, the pistachio was not as fragrant as I hoped, and it was a bit more green-ish color meaning they might have added a hint of food coloring rather than the natural off white / very faint green color. While the gelato texture warrants a 5 star review, these two things knocked off 2 half stars (1 star) for me.

Maki S.

Yelp
It looks closed from the outside. I think they should do something with the lighting inside because we almost walked past it. Check the sign on the door. It's probably open. As we entered I noticed the seating is limited but perfect for this clean and cozy shop. On a side note, I really liked Service was polite, and the display of ice cream was very unique, as it's actually prepared right in front of you. So as you look down you can see the ice cream churning in their respective flavors which was really cool. You can get free samples just so you know you're getting exactly what you want. I only have one complaint: My husband ordered affogato, and it was prepared a little bit differently from what I'd seen done in the past. What this server did was put the ice cream in and brew the coffee on top of it and add a cookie before serving. The way that I'd seen it done previously is that the ice cream and the espresso are prepared separately, so you can pour the espresso on top of it when you're ready to eat it, instead of receiving a messy soup of deliciousness. I've also seen it served in glass dishes (because it's really beautiful when done correctly), but this was served in a paper cup. I would recommend that the servers prepare it the original way for aesthetics & so the customer can enjoy it longer. Otherwise, I tried a little bit of what he got and it was delicious. If you're on the boring end like me, I absolutely recommend the vanilla bourbon ice cream in a waffle cone. You'll enjoy it! Flavors are more limited than they were 3 years ago, however, I actually like a limited selection because that means that they spend more time developing the flavors that you get to choose from. The gelato was rich and creamy and I really enjoyed it.

Ami Y.

Yelp
My friend and I went to get the gelato here - we both had the tiramisu flavor which was pretty good! Small size comes in a cup that you can hold in just one hand and was around $6. It was just the right size for me. The place is a good size with seating areas that would fit about 5-6 people. There was some flies roaming inside the shop and that kinda killed the vibe so we ate outside.

Jacques R.

Yelp
Simply spectacular!!! Do not miss if you are a true ice cream / gelato person!!! Hazelnut the REAL thing!!!! Congrats...

Marcia J.

Yelp
The gelato here is tasty, however I feel like the consistency is a bit soft and not as cold as some other gelatos I've previously tasted. There is a good mix of flavors and the potions are relatively nice for the price. I'd say it's worth a try ... it's also worth noting that the customer service on the day that I purchased was exceptional... the young lady who served my gelato was hilarious and quite friendly.

Alison G.

Yelp
We typically make stops at Salt and Straw when in the area but decided to give this gelato shop a go. There are a couple tables for sitting down although we saw folks take orders to go as well. You can order a standard size cone and get 2 scoops (different flavors). I picked pistachio and espresso on while my husband picked the vanilla bourbon and cookies and cream. Generous scoops of smooth and creamy deliciousness stuffed into a crispy cone = a perfect cap to our evening out!

Su-jen Y.

Yelp
I LOVE this gelato!! The Oreo bits in the gelato was still crunchy, tells you how fresh this gelato is!! And you can definitely taste the ingredients because they were so natural. Really loved the hazelnut flavor as well!! Definitely recommend

Ariel P.

Yelp
Ok, the organic chocolate is probably the best I've ever had! The pints to go make great gifts - they include a prettily wrapped cone and cute bag.

Jane M.

Yelp
I love D'Ambrosio Gelato. An amazing gelato shop in Ballard. Walked in pretty late on a weekday and it still had folks in there. We ordered the Theo Chocolate and Pistachio flavors and also the Picante (Spicy Italian Chocolate). We devoured our gelatos. It was nice and creamy. For chocolate lovers I would highly recommend Theo Chocolate. Pistachio is delicious and I could get some pistachio bites in my gelato. Loved it. Portions are plenty but when it comes to gelatos who is complaining? Highly recommend!

Niya Z.

Yelp
A great gelato place you can try after you enjoyed your meal at ballard. They provide farm fresh and organic ingredients for gelato, which are 60% less fat, and 30% fewer calories. I love the Kid size that allow you to enjoy a sweet treat but not with much guilty. I had the Pistachio gelato this time, its flavor was vibrant, with its smooth, velvety texture.

Jorie M.

Yelp
I got the affogato with the cookies and cream gelato. An affogato is an espresso poured over ice cream/gelato. Honestly, one of my favorite kind of desserts since I had it at the Ballard seafood market two years ago. This gelato spot has tons of flavors to choose from, and I was able to taste test most of them which was nice! The server was friendly and patient, thank goodness, since my friend and I were having such a hard time choosing a flavor Please come to this little gelato shop and taste for yourself!

Pratima M.

Yelp
A cute little gelato shop located in Ballard with a wide selection of flavors. The gelato here is creamy and the servings are big (since they literally cram it into the cup) so I loved it! I got the classic stracciatella, a milky base with chocolate flakes mixed in. The kids size was perfect and hit the spot without being too overwhelming.

Emily S.

Yelp
Great service, great gelato! Every time I come to Ballard I love making a stop here! On hot days it can get pretty warm in the location waiting for some gelato. For me it's worth the wait but would be nice to have some AC running!

Chi D.

Yelp
Came here on a Sunday afternoon and there was no line. A few people inside already eating gelato, but it wasn't crowded. The person behind the counter was super friendly and answered all my questions and gave me a few samples when I asked. I tried the Ricotta and dried fruit flavor which had sounded really interesting it; it was actually rather mild and boring. Nothing really special about it. I thought it would be like froyo with a hint of pannetone / that dried fruit flavor you associate with the holidays, but nope. The blackberry lavender was floral but not very balance with acid, which I had expected given the berries. The blackberry flavor was very light though. I also tried the whiskey cream which was nicely boozy but well balanced. The espresso was also really good and the two combined in a cup was lovely. The pistachio was very good. I wish I'd tried the salted caramel, but there is only so much space in my stomach. Prices were reasonable for the portion size. I wouldn't go out of my way to come back, but if I were in the area and craving gelato, this would do. Definitely not the best gelato I've ever had though.

Robb G.

Yelp
Been a long time customer and a big fan of D'Ambrosia until our visit yesterday. As I understand it, the business was recently sold and boy has it changed. We ordered one of our usual combinations and were sorely disappointed. The gelato wasn't its normal very excellent taste and texture. It was mediocre. They used to make a fine affogato but no longer offer it. Their world class pistachio gelato is now bland and ordinary. I guess things change but Seattle has lost one of it's jewels. Time to start looking for a new gelato place.

Lorraine I.

Yelp
They need ten stars Ten star for sure no arguments accepted The gelato is the best thing I have ever had in my entire life trust me like literally my entire life I can not stop eating it although it is winter and I felt so cold already I just can not stop eating Soooooo goooood

Chris M.

Yelp
Pistachio - yes! Hazelnut- yes! Espresso coffee - yes! Dare I say best gelato in the world? Creamy, velvety, and smooth. Not too sweet and made with super fresh ingredients. You can taste the nuts and the coffee. My problem is I'm usually stuffed after eating around the corner at Asadero and I can't eat both. On the rare occasion I'm shopping for a dress at Horseshoe (across the street), I'll stop by for a few scoops or a cone.

Young Y.

Yelp
Amazing gelato and friendly service. Samples - she just kept recommending samples to us and we enjoyed them thoroughly. I'd say all flavors are amazing. Green tea matcha is new, and the pistachio (that everyone needs to try) has a nice strong accented flavor. The owner's passion definitely stands out in the way she serves her gelato and greets her customers. One of those places where you can taste passion in the gelato. Love it. Bathroom is clean meaning the kitchen is clean! Coming back!

Alex N.

Yelp
Good gelato spot located in Ballard. Not really much seating but Ballard has a lot of out door seating and is a nice place to walk around. The chocolate was good, not as rich as I'd like it to be but still good.

Cindy F.

Yelp
TLDR: multiple flavors in one cup for one cost. Generous proportions! Spacious area with limited seating along the walls. I'm a big fan of the large waiting area. You can get a small, medium, or large cup and get up to 2, 3, and 4 flavors respectively. Service: Order and pay at the counter. You can try samples of any flavor prior to making a decision. You can get lids for your sorbet cups! Bread Pudding: super smooth, fluffy and lightly sweetened. Love the caramel swirls! Perfect pair with a fruit sorbet! Mixed Berry Sorbet: fluffy and lightly sweetened with a nice berry tang. Very refreshing!

Abi W.

Yelp
I got the Nutella gelato, and it was good but over priced for the size. I saw a recent review response from the business owner that described the small as a "heaping 4oz" but the worker literally smoothed the top of the cup like it was a measuring of flour. (Which is no hate to her I'm sure she's doing as instructed). But places that do that always give me cheapskate vibes. The "heaping" look is what I expected from the pictures I had seen, but it looked more like getting a mini container of store bought HagenDas. I am gonna continue my desert search elsewhere. :/

Allen H.

Yelp
Enjoyed the chocolate, straciatella and pistachio gelato. All are good, the pistachio is very strong, which is nice. The location in downtown is closed so we were lucky to be nearby. The streets are a little packed by outdoor dining from other restaurants, which is fine.

Monica C.

Yelp
Creamy gelato that isn't overpowering or heavy. Light, smooth and delicately flavored. Candied fruit, coffee, caramel, lavender and other subtle flavors are available in this tiny shop.

Conor S.

Yelp
Have you been here!!? If the answer is 'no' you should change that soon! Very soon. I tried vanilla and strawberry and both flavors were excellent. They offer a number of sizes and options, cups and bowls. The flavors do change but they have some regulars. The place also has great service and even when there is a line it moves pretty quick.

Jason L.

Yelp
A-m-a-z-i-n-g. Everything at D'Ambrosio Gelato was pure perfection. The lady behind the counter was friendly and happily gave us any sample we wanted to try. The store is clean and felt very open. There are a few tables lining the walls. I like how you can get multiple flavors with any size that you order. I decided on the pistachio and hazelnut. I am a huge fan of pistachio and after I sampled it here, I fell in love with it! It was rich, delicate, dense and packed with flavor!! Some of the best pistachio gelato I've had for sure... without a doubt. The hazelnut had this subtle, creamy and rich taste that was not overpowering which made it deceptively flavorful. I think pistachio and hazelnut paired really well together and I can't wait to go back!! If you're looking for an awesome dessert place, look no further than D'Ambrosio Gelato!!

Dee M.

Yelp
We got the pistachio, chocolate and Reeses ice cream. Everything was yum and right sized!

Jenny T.

Yelp
Great gelato. Large portions. Service a little slow. It was really busy when we showed up on Saturday night and they only had one employee working. So it took a while to get our gelato but it allowed us to digest our dinner and it was totally worth it.

T. T.

Yelp
As a former employe, this is a terrible place to work. In terms of the gelato itself it is falsely advertised as made fresh everyday, however, they will go months without making new batches. while working there I found moldy ingredients on multiple occasions but as a Batista I wasn't allowed to deal with ingredients. please do not support this business as employees are treated poorly and are not given any tips. even if you are not concerns with the work ethics the food safety is deeply untrustworthy. you would be better off going to Salt&Straw any day.

Bano B.

Yelp
I had been a fan since they first opened in Ballard. My memory is the owner would work the store and as they grew, went more behind the scenes. As they expanded, it was nice to not have to go to Ballard, to be able to get it n Capitol Hill for instance. It lost some of the cozy and authentic feel to their original set up. Even though I have moved away, I still try to go see them when I am in town and have a gelato. This recent time was so disappointing! For a kids pistachio it was $6 and it was literally a rounded tablespoon at the very bottom of their smallest cup. The cup used to be rounded off at the top and for less. The gelato tasted off from what I always loved about it too, perhaps because they have new fancy mixers going in the gelato versus it just being in basins. Perhaps that is supposed to do something wonderful but they were wonderful before and every other wonderful gelato I have had did not require these fancy mixers.... Sadly, this was the last time I will visit them. All good things have an end I guess.... I hope this review helps you have appropriate expectations because mine were much higher.

Paul V.

Yelp
You've got good gelato here at D'Ambrosio. Stars 1/2: What's the down low on this spot? D'Ambrosio has a great variety of both classic and contemporary gelato flavors in what is a really cute and quaint shop. At $4.75 for a decent sized single scoop, the prices are reasonable as well. Two Stars. Stars 3/4: What makes this place so special? Flavor and consistency are everything when it comes to gelato, and D'Ambrosio balances the two in a really strong way. My salted caramel was bursting with flavor but didn't melt too quickly and avoided that hard or watered down taste that 'gelato' so often has. Two Stars. Star 5: What would have been better? It's not that D'Ambrosio wasn't very good, it's just that it wasn't too drastically different from some of the other players in town like Gelatiamo or Bottega Italina. No Star.

Sierra S.

Yelp
The best gelato I have had outside of Italy! This was the creamiest and most flavorful gelato. I could really taste the hazelnut and pistachio nut in each bite, not artificial at all.

Ryan L.

Yelp
Oh My Yum! Came across this little wonder of a shop this afternoon while strolling trough Ballard. We're a sucker for handmade gelato and had some totally delicious concoctions. My wife had Caramel & Fig and Pistachio together, while I had Salted Caramel & Chocolate Sorbet. Both were great combinations. We wouldn't think at first that Caramel and figs go together, but it works. I do have to say though that in the same bite, you need more of the salted caramel than the chocolate as the latter is super rich and will overpower other flavors. I loved the chocolate though...tasted like a frozen spoonful of brownie dough! On a second visit we tried some other flavors that were equally delicious. My wife had the combination of Strawberry Ricotta & Hazelnut; while I had Mixed Berry & Cream and Chocolate. My oh my, they were good. We didn't try them, but they also have an espresso bar with good looking drinks. It'll have to wait till next time. And believe you me, there will be a next time!

Sophia W.

Yelp
Great little gelato spot, their flavors were so vibrant and delicious! Will definitely be going back for more. We had the strawberry, Oreo Cookies and Cream, Tiramisu and Pistachio! All I can say is yummm!

Elena P.

Yelp
Delicious chocolate gelato! I also had the strawberry rose gelato but I found the rose flavor to be delicious but too subtle for my liking. Would love just a rose gelato with a stronger rose flavor. Rose is one of my favorite flavors and so rare to find!

Kieu N.

Yelp
Their pistachio and panna cotta flavors are so good. It's so good I would go to Ballard from West Seattle just for this gelato. Give me this over salt and straw any day. They are generous with their samples. My BF tried 4 flavors before deciding on cafe and panna cotta. I always get pistachio and the second flavor always varies depending on my mood. The panna cotta was my first sample and I didn't need to try any more after that. So good.

Tj C.

Yelp
Delicious. Loved it. Had some with friends . Quiet place if you just wanna eat in peace. Strawberry was delicious and the stracciatella was just as good as in Italy. Def worth coming here

Ana M.

Yelp
We had lunch and decide to have dessert here. When we arrived there was no line but while we were trying to decide flavors a lot of people started making a line! Wow in just a minute. So I can see it can get busy on weekends. I tried stracciatella. It was good with velvety feeling. Just as gelato is supposed to be. I didn't ask but it would be a good option having something non dairy too ;) The servings are big. I asked for just one scoop but I don't remember if they charged me complete!! There is a little bar and two tables. They are big but people don't tend to share it if their party is of 2. So you have to eat on your way somewhere else. We waited just a couple of minutes to get a seat but still there were people wandering around. I wish they could have more tables but I guess there is no much room for them.

Vanessa C.

Yelp
I don't know what happened to the staff on June 11 at 07:00pm but the people who was attending the business were angry and behave very strange. That discouraged us to enjoy our ice cream, which also was very average.

Lulu L.

Yelp
The gelato is exquisite! Some of the best I've eaten. But at $13 a pint, it's overpriced. It just is.

justin l.

Yelp
Ice cream was delicious and creamy and rich they did not have all the flavors ready at the time but was still happy with the ice cream I got.

Monica S.

Yelp
The perfect after dinner date night spot in Ballard! I came to D'Ambrosio with my fiancé after having dinner in the area. After living in this city for 4 years, don't ask me why it took me this long to make it into D'Ambrosio, but it did. Upon entry, we were greeted by the man behind the counter and he let us know some of his personal favorites. The portions of gelato are pretty big, so we shared the hazelnut and theo's chocolate chunk, in a kids size, and it was the perfect size for two. We were both stuffed after that! The gelato flavors were amazing and creamy, and oh so satisfying. It didn't even make me miss ice cream! I'll definitely be back soon!

Tori Z.

Yelp
This has become one of our go to dessert places over the years. Recently it has become even more so since salt and straw opened up, its tastier than salt and straw and there is usually no wait. If you're deciding between the 2 definitely come here. The gelato is delicious and there's always new flavors to try!
