Samah I.
Yelp
Let me preface this by saying I was avidly keeping up with the updates about when Dave's was landing in NYC. The fact that it was a halal chain had me impossibly excited to try it considering that it was so well known across the United States. It seemed everyone else was too because there was a long line to order. And forget about getting a seat inside.
Today I had the chance to try it and carted five of my friends along with me (who don't get out much) so I was really looking forward to experiencing Dave's together. Despite all of us having a wide range of palates, experience with hot chicken, and spice none of were really too impressed. Honestly it's almost embarrassing that I, the foodie in the group, brought them to a spot I was eager about only to let the entire team down. It's a little dramatic but I take pride in sharing good food with my friends and this wasn't it.
The service was good. The lady at the register was really friendly despite being under so much pressure. As for the gentleman operating the other one, not so much. I get it, the lines are really long and there's a lot of people I don't expect rainbows and sunshine but I could see that it made my friends really uncomfortable.
As for the food. I got the number two. The two sliders and fries combo and Mac and cheese. There were random pickles in the box and sauce to go with the fries. I guess pickle eaters would rejoice at the former.
We'll start with the side because it was the most disappointing of all. The Mac and cheese tasted literally identical to a frozen Mac and cheese I bought from target last year. If I remembered the brand I would tell you. The portion size was ridiculous and not in a good way. It wasn't even filled close to the top and there was no utensil in my bag to eat it with. Now I'm not adverse to eating with my hands but does anyone eat Mac and cheese with their fingers? I think not and with no seating available in the store that was definitely not gonna happen. I understand they're busy but considering how they were so quick to chase us out the store, you would think they'd minimize the need for customers to return. There were no napkins either.
I had walked quite a distance away before making this realization and had to turn back and go back in to get some. Everyone serving the food was really nice about it. I'm sure that because the spot has been open for only a couple weeks they're just getting into the groove of things so hopefully going forward this won't happen again for other customers.
As for the sliders combo. The portion size is really great for the cost. No complaints at all there. I think you're getting your monies worth. I'm curious if they have an option to just buy a single slider because it feels more cost effective for those who can't eat that much but because they were so busy I didn't ask.
As for the taste, pretty okay. I ordered "hot" and it wasn't hot at all but that all comes down to tolerance level so I can't fault anyone for that. I think one level higher would've been better for me. It was juicy for sure and the coleslaw cooled it down and the pickles added a crunch but bun was literally cold. I wish there was a little more coleslaw just because it felt like there was a single teaspoon on there but no biggie really.
The fries were fine lol. Nothing to say about them. If they messed those up I wouldn't really know what to say.
Overall, I think Dave's is just okay. With the long lines, the potential chance of being yelled at by someone at the register, the impossibility of sitting down to eat, and the average food, I wouldn't recommend it to anyone.
I'm so appreciative they made the chain halal so Muslims can eat the food but there's better halal spots out there.
