California's Craft Sake Movement Has Come Into Its Own

"A native of Kanagawa, Japan, Sako arrived in the United States in 2000, and as a bassist, was enticed by the music scene in San Francisco as well as the relentless curiosity and discipline of Bay Area’s makers, artists, and businesses—values that deeply motivated traditional Japanese artisanship."

6 Great Bar+Restaurant Collabs Happening Right Now

"Teaming Up With: Alamar and The Lumpia Company The San Diego-based brewery recently announced it’s partnering with Alamar Bar & Kitchen and reopening its Oakland location with new sidewalk seating. Alamar created a special takeout menu that includes guava chili barbecue-glazed wings, and beer cheese made with Modern Times beer. While you’re there, you can also pick up lumpia and barbecue chicken skewers from the Filipino takeout spot, The Lumpia Company. For more details, head to their website." - lani conway

The 2019 Eater SF Holiday Gift Guide - Eater SF

"Give the gift of local, West Oakland–brewed sake from Den Sake, and enjoy the sense of satisfaction when the recipient’s mind is blown (“it’s not from Japan??”). Better yet, order this set from Oakland’s Umami Mart and the sake will come with a bar of soap made with the sake lees — the solid byproducts of the sake-making process — from that same brewery. Professional sake brewers in Japan credit sake lees for their soft, youthful skin — the kind of skin that users of this soap can (hopefully) look forward to having soon." - Becky Duffett

Yelp
Delicious sake. Small operation mean, they can put great care into the sake. Do yourself a favor, try something local and unique in the unpasteurized Nama sake, you won't be able to get that most places, pair it with your favorite sushi, enjoy life.

Yelp
Den Sake is a small but extremely carefully designed and crafted brewery. Yoshi and Lani poured their lives' work into the brewery to brew worthy uniquely American, local (their rice is sourced from Sacramento) yet worthy respectable Japanese sake. Den sake can be found throughout the best Japanese and high end sushi restaurants in the bay area, at Umami market and also True Sake. My personal favorite is the nama sake, the new blanc and red labels are delicious too. It's uniquely Californian, and I love it. It's so cool to find such artisan sake in California. The sakemaster has also spent time and trained in Japan. This location allows sake pick ups and some availabilities of internet orders. If you are lucky, you may see the owners walking their cute shiba inu around the bay area.
