Wow.
Could NOT have asked for a better start to the new year. I've been following their Instagram account since conception and couldn't wait to try it. No excuse with it being so close to home and with limited options on a holiday, my partner and I were thrilled to find it not only open but blessedly empty (this will change) and a total treat.
The menu, conveniently hung in the window to view before even entering was unique and tantalizing. We were grateful to see a service fee would be applied to compensate the staff (this is not only smart but very convenient for patrons in a hybrid dining situation where you order at the counter but are still served. I mention this because a reviewer seemed a little surprised by it but it is clearly spelled out on the menu.)
ANYWAY, we were greeted by what turned out to be the proprietor and were delighted by the ambiance, the vibe, the decor and the hospitality. Since we were the only diners, we pretty much hijacked all of their attention and got the skinny on the neighborhood, the ins and outs of entrepreneurship during a pandemic and the amazing achievement of seeing a long-held dream become a reality.
But, the best part? The food. Oh lordy, the food. We learned the owner had a catering background but we could not have been more impressed with our selections. We were in breakfast mode so our dishes reflected that (but we cannot wait to return for lunch and dinner!) I couldn't decide between the Gluten Free Banana Nut Pancakes and the Breakfast Burrito so I got both. My partner had the Biscuits & Gravy with fried eggs - a veritable unicorn of a dish in Los Angeles that did not disappoint. The gravy was perfectly peppered and teeming with sausage. We're both certified Clean Plate Club members but the portions were so generous (and we ordered for three) that we ended up with a to-go box.
The Breakfast Burrito brought tears to my eyes. It was basically a perfect French omelette folded into a warm flour tortilla with cheese and sausage (Vegan option available, too). I alternated the two sauces with each bite: a spicy habanero and a delicious tomatillo. It's my new favorite Breakfast Burrito (sorry, Wake and Late!) The banana pancakes were perfect - not too sweet but nutty and wholesome. The gluten-free label curbed a 'little' bit of the guilt.
Really looking forward to getting back on my road bike to take advantage of the indoor bike parking and convenient vending machine for all your riding needs (tubes, socks, etc.). All in all, this is such a welcome addition to the Arts District and I, for one, can't wait for more people to enjoy it.
