Diamond Bakery Is Closed on Fairfax But Still Sells Bread in LA | Eater LA

"After 77 years in business, I learned that the iconic Jewish bakery on Fairfax Avenue closed permanently on December 3; Douglas Weinstein called the decision “painful,” noting the bakery had been losing money every day due to insufficient retail, online, and delivery sales and that the cost of maintaining its aging facility and equipment — including failing water pipes — was insurmountable. To keep the brand alive, Weinstein arranged a partnership with Bread Los Angeles so production can continue, and the bakery’s loaves of corn rye, seeded rye, seedless rye, and pumpernickel will remain available through other retailers." - Cathy Chaplin

Diamond Bakery Review - Fairfax - Los Angeles - The Infatuation

"Diamond Bakery is a Jewish bakery in the Fairfax District that has been churning out glossy challah since the 1940s. The white and blue shop is known for its rye bread, chewy pretzels that make the ones from  AMC look like cardboard, and lots of little, sprinkle-covered cookies that are asking to be dunked into hot coffee (they have that, too.) Make sure to grab one of their spinach boreks on the way out. " - Sylvio Martins

Ordered a custom Hello Kitty jack o’ lantern cake for my wife’s birthday since I didn’t carve a 🎃 this year. Gave them reference for the cake design and will consider requesting fondant for the HK design next time. Given how I ordered this 2 days in advance, I’m really happy with how it turned out!

Google
Price good smells good looks good definitely recommend egg tart and ham and cheese bread

Google
I think this bakery is hit or miss? They have a lot of really good-looking cakes in the bakery case. I needed a cake, so I stopped in. It def smells good inside! I got a 6” tiramisu cake that cost $30. It looked pretty, but I thought it tasted ok. It had a good sweetness level. The cake had alternating layers of jelly-mousse stuff with coffee cake. The top was creamy and had a layer of cocoa powder. The fruit tart cake was also $30; maybe I should have gotten that one instead. I saw a chicken pot pie in the case next to the register and decided to try it for ~$3. It was warmed and delicious !!!! The layers were flaky and buttery. The inside chicken pot pie didn’t burn my mouth, and it was a good savory taste. This was a nice surprise from a bakery visit. Bakers spoke English. Credit card/Apple Pay accepted.

Google
I pre-ordered a cake expecting a smooth pickup, but when I arrived, staff couldn’t find my order and it hadn’t been made. I was then asked to wait another 30 minutes. I understand mistakes happen, but better order tracking and communication would go a long way in improving the customer experience.

Google
Great pastries, very slow service, just go with it. Hong Kong style mooncakes not too sweet, with and without egg yolk, two sizes- red bean, green bean, lotus, black date. Delicious pineapple cakes, not super dry. Egg tarts, various flaky pastries, savory buns in glass case. Customers can get very cranky when the service doesn't happen fast enough.

Google
They have really cool designs. Very friendly service. I’m glad they were open on Christmas.

Google
Definitely give this place a shot! We needed to order a cake for our graduation banquet (we survived nursing school!) in about 3 weeks. We received a referral to this quaint bakery from our venue, so we decided to stop by and see if they could accommodate an order for 150 guests so close to our event date. AND LET ME TELL YOU... Kathy is hilarious and wonderful and so charismatic. She set us up with all of the fixings AND even offered cake testing for us. Everything tastes absolutely delicious. I don't think you could go wrong with ANY flavor combination they offer. All of the cakes waiting to be picked up looked so yummy. I would definitely recommend Diamond Bakery to anyone in the Monterey Park area for all their cake-required events!!

Google
One of the best HK bakeries in town. Whether you’re a Hongkonger or not, you can enjoy a genuine taste of Hong Kong food and bakery. They are well mannered and have good English communication skills. Diamond Bakery has a variety of good bakery. My favorites are Bolo Bao, translated as a pineapple bun, and Dan Tat, translated as an egg tart, drinking with Lai Cha, translated as Hong Kong-style milk tea. This is one of the best combinations to fully and thoroughly enjoy the essence of Hong Kong food/bakery. Please visit and you won’t get disappointed. Stay safe, be informed, and be well during this pandemic era we live in.

Yelp
Canto speaking and open until 7pm, 7 days a week. Friendly aunties and stern husbands/male workers. Big variety of buns, pastries and cakes. Have both Portuguese and HK egg custard tarts. Breads are a little pricey (avg $4 ea), but everything is nowadays. We always stop in for a roll cake to bring with us when visiting relatives.

Yelp
Wow surly prices went up the last 10-20 years! Came in and got a handful of breads and it's $40 bucks! Like 6 things but this place is self served, you can get your daily dose of breakfast breads (Asian style) and also order birthday cakes etc. Got my daughter a panda shaped chocolate bun. Needed snacks for a baseball game to hold us over for dinner. Service was fine. They ring you up and bag your items, that's about it! Not the worse or the best! It's average!

Yelp
Diamond Bakery did a really great job on our wedding cake! Sandy was incredibly helpful and let us try several different flavor combinations. She offered helpful suggestions that the guests really enjoyed - mango was a bit hit at the wedding. We provided a box of fake flowers that the bakery used to decorate the cake and they also piped on frosting flowers. It was exactly what we wanted!
google avatar

Camilla T.

Yelp
I'm shocked at the low rating! But I guess people normally don't rate bakeries unless they really love or really hate a place! We had cake tasting here for our wedding cake and were able to work with the manager Shay! The cakes were delicious! We tried to white cake with strawberry, mango mousse sponge cake, red velvet with cream cheese and the cappuccino cake. My two favorites were the signature strawberry cake and the mango mousse cake. I killed those. The red velvet was dry and regular. The cappuccino cake was delicious, but I am not a coffee drinker so I couldn't see myself serving it at my wedding! Shay was super helpful. There was lots of activity going on that day (Friday). Lots of people picking up cakes, fruit tarts, etc. The staff were busy and everyone seemed happy with their orders! Small place. I only wish they had chairs for the cake tasting, because we had to wait 20-25 mins for them to prepare the samples. Everything else was great tho!

Yelp
I am so happy this place is still open! My mom used to bring us here during the weekends so we can get egg tarts and pastries to snack on for the week. That was nearly over 25 years ago! We really enjoy their egg tarts, cocktail buns, pork floss buns, and sesame balls. We weren't huge fans of the bbq pork bun, the bread itself was good but the cuts of pork were a little fatty. Do note that they make everything in house so assortment and stock of baked goods will depend on the time of day and day of the week you go! They also do custom cakes and they have a binder full of examples you can choose from. I haven't ordered a custom cake before but I've gotten one of their other layered cakes for my grandma for one of her birthdays; I remember her liking it! The people behind the counter mostly speak Cantonese but can understand English. They're usually really nice regardless of what language you speak (: Try to bring cash! If not, there's a $10 minimum for card. Also, their card reader wasn't working when I went and thankfully I had some cash on hand. I'd bring some cash just in case! Is it the fanciest bakery? No, but it's quaint and they definitely have a few star baked goods in the mix!
google avatar

Yelp
Card accepted with minimum of $10 purchase. They don't have a ton of options for the pre-made bakery buns laying out. They just have what is there. Wished they had the classic hot dog bun but didn't have any this day. We need a cute cake for a girl's birthday. We came in here on a whim as we were right next door picking up some snacks. So glad we walked in here, they have some cute cake options. And you can't go wrong with Asian birthday cakes. They're light, fluffy and just the right amount of sweetness. We placed an order to be picked up a few days in advance. It was ready to be picked up right when they opened at 8am which was helpful for an office girl. TB1040 was the design code of our cake, topped with a Hello Kitty figurine. $47 for a 6 inch cake. It was outlined with light pink and dotted with mini pastel hearts all over with pastel rainbows along the sides. They had a few different Hello Kitty figurines to choose from and placed the one we chose on hold for our cake. We chose to fill the cake with strawberries and they were fresh.

Yelp
Diamond Bakery is a gem in Monterey Park! I was looking for a place that does Chinese bakery style cakes but with a custom design. When you walk inside, the bakery has displays filled with their signature cakes as well as cakes with custom designs (including a realistic durian cake too). I decided to come here for a birthday cake and I got quoted $50 for my Jellycat birthday cake that I could pick up within the next day. It is a little pricey considering it is just a regular strawberry cake with feet and a face. However, Sandy helped me make sure I got exactly what I was looking for. Make sure to have your Pinterest board ready before coming in. My cake turned out so so CUTE! I would definitely recommend diamond bakery to anyone trying to do a custom cake with the Chinese bakery twist!

Yelp
Had a full sheet of strawberry cake for an epic bday party. The cake is pretty good, very fluffy, light, not overly sweet and has a crunchy layered interior which is different and fun. Overall good cake for large parties that feeds many.
google avatar

Yelp
Service isn't a friendly as they used to be, but it's still ok. I came later in the day around 3 or 4, so not as much selection. Pork curry puff pastry was good, flavorful and flaky. Bbq pork bun was solid, lots of meat. Not the best I've had, but filling. I tried the blueberry yogurt bun for the first time, and that was tasty. My favorites are still the curry bun, and cream filled pineapple bun aka nai wong bo lo bao. Maybe I'll be early enough to get them next time.
google avatar

Judy L.

Yelp
The ladies here are very nice. She wanted to make sure I tried the sample of their black sesame bread. It was fluffy and soft; perfect sweetness for bread meaning not too sweet which I prefer. I got a Chinese tamale also. I just finished the flaky taro bun and wow it was so good. It was fresh and flaky. I will definitely go back to get that again.
google avatar

Joyce L.

Yelp
I like the cakes because the cakes are not overly sweet. It is just rights. Service is great and I am satisfied with the birthday cake I got. Place is clean and great.
google avatar

Sam L.

Yelp
My friend ordered their wedding cake, and I had the chance to try the durian cake. I'd never had durian cake before, but this cake was absolutely delicious! It was perfectly moist, not too sweet, and had a strong durian flavor. I'll definitely want to try more flavors, and I'll absolutely get the durian cake again!
google avatar

Yelp
My parents had me coming all the way here for those Honey Butterflies! This bakery was around since they were young. So these were nostalgic. They tasted just as they remember. Owner was super kind and gave some history as well. You could even see the old machine they use to make the honey butterflies! Classic Chinese bakery vibes!

Jia C.

Yelp
Cake is very cute and will definitely order again. For the price the cake and quality is very good!
google avatar

Yelp
I had preordered a cake for my baby shower a week in advance. I came to pick up the cake this morning, and they had a mixup, and the cake was not available. The pick up time was 9 AM, and we did not leave until 10:20 to get a cake that was already premade. Totally unacceptable especially with the event that is within two hours of the original cake pick up time. Disappointed because I enjoy their pastries, but I will not be ordering from them again.

Yelp
Diamond Bakery went above and beyond to make daughter's birthday cake extra special! We tried to go to a few ready made cake spots and their cakes were so expensive with no personality! I saw another customer here on Yelp order a jellycat cake from diamond and we had to jump on the opportunity! My daughter had been asking for this cake and I totally forgot! I ordered with just about 24 hours notice ( mom brain ) and they were so nice and helpful even with our short time frame! They even guided me on flavors / colors etc!! The cake pick up time ran a little late but that was no major issue for us since I was just so thankful for a last minute custom cake!! The cake itself was sooooo cute and SO GOOD! Perfectly fluffy, and not too sweet ( just right ) it was the perfect size for our guests and such an amazing price for a custom cake. I think all of our guests will also order from diamond from here on out since we all loved it!! I know we will order again for sure! Thank you so much Diamond team!

Yelp
[4.5/5 stars] - got to try the durian cake from here to celebrate my mom's birthday & it was pretty yummy. it wasn't too sweet, just the right amount. the design too was super cute and literally looked like a durian! maybe a little more durian in the cake would be nice but still good regardless.
google avatar

Ann Q.

Yelp
We've been coming here for their famous Mango cake for ages! The price has definitely home up but the quality is still just as good! Our favorite must get cake for any celebration is their famous Mango cake where you have thin slices of mango surrounding the entire cake topped with assorted fresh fruit. Normally it's white cake with fresh mangoes in the inside but we prefer customizing it with chocolate cake with fresh fruit inside (mango or strawberry) I was able to place my order, the day before, over the phone very easily. However since my order was custom, they required payment over the phone. Totally understandable, but I think I'll just try to go in person next time because they ask you for your entire CC info. Not very comforting to know someone now has access to my CC...

Johna L.

Yelp
I really like the baked goods here! Their pineapple bread is hands down the best. Other Chinese bakeries tend to be sweeter than needed. I also love their tiger skin swiss roll. They taste so good and not too sweet when compared with other bakeries. Diamond Bakery is my go to place when I need a sweet lift. The service is wonderful!
google avatar

Marjorie H.

Yelp
I went to pick up a cake for a friends birthday. The cake was delicious amd soft. Definitely recommend it. However, it took the workers a while to even acknowledge me even after i said hello a few times. I wasnt greeted just asked what i wanted. I told them a pick up, she opened the box soni can view and packed it up and i was out.
google avatar

Bill Y.

Yelp
The 8 inch strawberry cake was too crumbly. Cake fell apart when slicing. Could have used more cream between the layers.
google avatar

Lina C.

Yelp
This would have to be my number one go to spot for Asian cakes. The cakes here are not too sweet, just the perfect right amount of sweetness. The service is really good. I called a day before and was able to order a cake for my grandma via phone. The lady that helped me on the phone said they're able to make pandan coconut cake and that they're able to put fruits on top. Before ending the conversation, she had repeated my cake order to make sure everything is correct.
google avatar

Loren L.

Yelp
Been coming to this bakery for years and they are consistently great pastries. The service recently was very attentive and answered all my questions. This is an old bakery so there's really no seating just to go orders but they do carry your typical Asian Bakery standards. The vibe is chill but can get pretty crazy as there's no number system so just be sure to make eye contact and raise your hand with people behind the counter to let them know you're next! Overall, I prefer the baked goods over that 80 something degrees place.
google avatar

Hellie N.

Yelp
I have been coming here for years for their cake, even though they are a bit out of my way. But Postmates helped solve that issue (with an expected but reasonable premium). They came through again with a recent Birthday Cake I ordered at the last minute. I had special instructions as to how the cake is supposed to look like and what to write on the cake and everything came out perfectly. Oh of course the cake was delicious as always. Thanks again for being the reliable bakery I can always count on!
google avatar

Lisa C.

Yelp
Went to get bread for my cousins' kids and was looking for the special bread loaf that is only sold here as far as I know. They sell specially flavored loaves like taro or coconut (there are 3, but I didn't get a picture as they freshly bake it in the morning and were still bagging it at 3ish). These loaves come uncut where you cut it yourselves to your desired width. It reminds me of the Asian toasts you can get at some boba cafes. Overall, they don't have the fancier new items like 85C where they go more European styles, but they definitely have their own takes of old Asian style breads. So, if you are looking for dependable traditional breads, this place is a reliable place to get fresh bread. Also, I attest to them baking a lot of fresh bread as I sadly have a recent bread allergy where I can feel nauseated when near a lot of bread (and I can't eat them anymore) - I don't feel that way in all bakeries (I.r. Perfectly fine in 85C bakery), but I definitely felt it here! I'm saying that as a good thing as you know they've been baking lots! It's also not based on size of bakeries as I've been fine in a lot of bakeries in general. I did try the bread before I developed the allergy and I definitely do think the bread here is pretty good. I also never bought a cake here, but the few times my mom brought me I am always in awe on the cake designs. They gave one shaped like a durian!
google avatar

Linda C.

Yelp
My sister went to get a cake it was delicious and everyone in the party love it. Thank you
google avatar

Susanna L.

Yelp
Honestly this has been my go to bakery for many years, probably over 14 years. Their filo cake (sponge cake with flaky crust in the middle) is so good. I love their regular pastries also. Their prices are extremely reasonable for cakes. You really can't go wrong with them. Their fruit tart cakes and mango cakes are good also. I like this place so much that I am literally ordering my wedding cake here and a whole sheet filo cake. This place has been around for decades, they are def doing something right ! Highly recommend this place.
google avatar

Graciela C.

Yelp
Well I wasn't disappointed. Only got to try the last breads of the day (around 7pm) and they were fresh and soft: 1. The taro loaf. I touched it and it was beyond pillowy, so naturally I had to get it. And it's whole which means I can make thick toast if I wanted to. It truly was mega soft. $4! 2. Purple yam haupia. This 4 pack was a bit denser than I thought it would be. It was okay for me. 3. Taro flaky bun. Soft soft soft even at night. It does have some decent taro paste inside but not too much. It was good. Not a fancy bakery but as a classic Chinese bread place, I thought it was fresh and soft enough to come back. Prices reasonable too. Next to the tofu place. Big plaza parking.
google avatar

Juan F.

Yelp
Small bakery located in the plaza that also has Tokyo Fried Chicken and Big Softee. Nothing really popped out to me when we visited but we did get some pastries and bread and they tasted pretty standard.
google avatar

Teresa F.

Yelp
I have been searching high and low across the SGV for a red bean bun with a pineapple top. Coming from the NY/NJ area, this was my favorite Chinese bakery item, but for some reason I haven't been able to find one anywhere in LA until Diamond Bakery! It's not quite the same as what I grew up eating--the red bean paste is smooth and doesn't have any mashed whole beans with skins in it--but I appreciated that it wasn't too sweet, the way some red bean paste can be, and that the pineapple crust was crunchy with good coverage over the bread. I can't speak to their other items, but in case anyone else is missing this kind of bun now that they moved to LA, know that you can get your fix here! Do come in the morning though, because last weekend they were sold out when I went around 2pm.

Hello H.

Yelp
I ordered the wedding cake 4 days in advanced and told them I would pick it up at 8am. Knowing it's an asian bakery, most likely there would be a delay, I showed up at 9:30am to pick up and realized my cake was still not ready! They gave me a cake without any decorations on the top and said it doesn't come with decorations. I told the owner (male cantonese speaking guy) that I paid extra $15 for the swans and the decorations like the picture. The employees then went to look for the swans and I was told that they ran out of swans. Since I paid for the decorations I asked them that at least decorate the top with something so it wouldn't look as plain. They then took the cake back and I waited for another 15mins and still not ready, but then I had to leave because the wedding ceremony was at 10am. I went back at 11am and I was told that the cake was still not ready. The employee said they waited for me to show me if I was ok with the swans before placing them on. I said yes, those are the decorations as shown on picture. They took the cake to the back again to place the swans on and then boxed it. Upon opening the cake up, I realized something was weird with the swans, they didn't look right to me, are the swans supposed to look away from each other???? I then googled pics for swans and realized they are supposed to face each other to form a heart shape. When the wedding couples were taking pictures, I had to repositioned the swans to face each other. I was really embarrassed with the cake since I got it for the newly wed couple as a wedding gift! Very disappointed at this bakery! Though the cake looked really nice but the cake was reallly dry. Please dont order your wedding cake at this place, it will probably ruin your wedding day with frustrations that the cake is either not ready or not what you ordered/expected and paid for.
google avatar

Rosie O.

Yelp
I have ordered the same custom-made cake from this bakery about 5 or 6 times. It never fails, my guests absolutely love the cake. They have always decorated it just how I want it. The prices are very reasonable in my opinion.
google avatar

David W.

Yelp
Decent cake but very bad service. Highly recommend preordering over the phone but can be difficult depends which staff pick up. Tried to order a cake over the phone, staff could barely speak English, was told to come in person, and got hanged up on...2nd call was the charm, staff name Cindy got the order instantly. They will not write Happy Birthday on the cake but will provide a topper. If you like coffee flavor, this is it! Got the 6" Cappuccino cake and it was very good. Price was $32. Icing is great. Sponge like cake and very sweet. Strawberry is very sour. Enough to feed a party of 10 with a fair amount of slice.
google avatar

Lauren L.

Yelp
We come here every year to get a Mango Mousse cake for my grandma's birthday. It is her favorite cake because "it is not too sweet" (If you are asian you know that is a big compliment). The cake is beautifully decorated and very light. Not an overwhelming amount of frosting, TONS of mango inside the cake. We love it and will continue the tradition every year. The cake is packaged very carefully, never had any issue with it falling over during transport.
google avatar

Grace C.

Yelp
I was in the area so I grabbed some bread to go for breakfast. No service pretty much serve yourself. I didn't realize one of my bread had a hole in the packaging on the side until I looked closer. I had already paid and went home and didn't think too much but won't be going back again. There is nothing special about the bread compared to other bakeries and their packaging sucks.

Gay Y.

Yelp
I bought flaky pastries at Diamond in Monterey Park. The oil was rancid. When I looked at the three that I bought, there were two different color dots, assuming marking two different production dates. Both color dot pastries had the rancid tastes so the assumption is that they used the same bucket of old oil. I'm not going back to Diamond in MP again.
google avatar

Stephen C.

Yelp
A gem in the area. They do great custom cakes and we love their fruit tarts. Everyone there is friendly when you have their attention. I got a cake for a 1 year old birthday party. I like how the cake turned out with a custom design. Parking: Huge lot in the front. Overall: Will be back for the fruit tart
google avatar

John H.

Yelp
Smells so good just walking in the door. Service with a smile ... representative met us at the door to see how she could help. Getting a special cake today. So many options! Based on our tasting event ... we preferred number one.

Gerald T.

Yelp
Their mooncakes including the red bean paste and lotus seed paste were amazing and high quality. The Raisin Twists are also very good.

Valerie V.

Yelp
Amazing mango cake have been getting it for years never disappointed love this place amazing service amazing options
google avatar

Katherine L.

Yelp
Their cake isn't the cheapest in the SGV area, but I really liked their Chocolate Delight cake! It has a crunch layer in the middle of the cake, which reminded me of the crunchy "cookie bottom" that are popular in Hong Kong bakeries when I was young. Order over the phone for pick up was easy, parking lot was empty when I went to pick up and it was at a convenient location.
google avatar

Trinh H.

Yelp
I ordered an 8" round taro cake from Diamond Bakery in Monterey Park. It costs $37.50 (not cheap). The outside is light purple, on the top are strawberries, macaroons, blueberries. The inside has 2 layers of yellow cakes and taro pastes in the middle. I bought it for July 4th. It is delicious. It's sweet. I also bought 2 ham & cheese sandwiches. Each one costs $4 or $5 (not cheap). Diamond Bakery has good cakes!!
google avatar

Krystal S.

Yelp
My family and I always order cakes from Diamond. They absolutely never disappoint! We typically order the sponge cake with either banana, strawberry, or both. This was my first customized order and they did even better than I even expected. I had a combination of two inspo images and this was better than I could've asked for. Thank you!

Erli S.

Yelp
I bought pineapple buns and raisin stick bread. Their sweet bread are soft and fluffy. Good bread overall. If im in the area I will definitely be back.
google avatar

Anna C.

Yelp
Oh my gosh, we ordered a birthday cake from here on Christmas Day through DoorDash, and the cake received was SO BEAUTIFUL and SO DELICIOUS. It was freshly baked, and the strawberries were so big and juicy. I was worried we would get a leftover cake since it was first thing in the morning, but it was all fresh! Thank you so much Diamond Bakery! It's hard celebrating birthdays on Christmas, but you made it happen! Will be back for the dan tats and more cakes.

Elica S.

Yelp
Terrible customer service and treats their employee poorly. The manager acts as if she hates her life, got a nasty attitude. She needs to fix her attitude before she learns how to manage a bakery.

Janice M.

Yelp
I've ordered several times through Uber Eats and Door Dash, every order comes properly packaged and always taste fresh. The strawberry slice is by far my favorite!
google avatar

Angie N.

Yelp
The cakes here use to be delicious, but sadly it has been subpar lately. I ordered a two tiered cake (yellow sponge cake, custard filling with strawberries) around this same time last year and it was delicious! My only complaint with that cake was that the top tier was not held up strongly, so it toppled over. And when I mentioned this to the baker recently, she shrugged it off as if it was no big deal. Wow, excellent feedback. I decided to order another birthday cake here. To order a custom cake, you have to email them with a description of the cake and when you need it by. I included my sketch and pictures to give them an idea how I wanted the cake as well. Someone then responds with a quote. Well, I did all that and received just the quote ($48.50) and no other instructions. When I emailed them back for the next step, I recieved no response. So I called the bakery and was told I needed to come in to pay. I took my lunch break to come here to pay for my order, and the older lady had trouble finding my email request. It took about 15 minutes for the lady to find my email. There was definitely a lack of communication between the individual providing quotes for custom cakes and the bakers at this shop. To top this off, I told the older lady that I want yellow sponge cake with CUSTARD filling and strawberries. She shook off my request and said, "We give you what we want to give you." So I kindly repeated myself and she ignored me. The staffs here are usually nice to me, but this was the first time someone was rude! The design of the cake came out how I had sketched it, so I was happy about that. But they ended up putting WHIP cream instead of custard as the filling. I was so upset by this that I refused to even eat the cake. If you decide to order a custom cake, you'll need patience and an attitude to get what you want around here.
