Post-fire reincarnation of a veteran American eatery known for serving hearty comfort foods 24/7.
"You're probably either too familiar with the slinger, or you really need to get acquainted. It's hash browns topped with two burger patties, grilled onions, cheese, two over easy eggs, and topped with chili. It'll be the best and worst thing to ever happen to you. And you'll find it at Diner Grill, which is basically two street cars pushed together at Irving Park Rd. and Paulina with just enough room for a counter and some stools. We haven’t been here yet, but want you to know this spot exists." - Team Infatuation

"Legendary greasy spoon Diner Grill was decimated by a fire in 2016 but reopened its doors two years later after a massive rebuild. Customers will find all of the typical diner staples here as well as the signature Slinger — hash browns topped with two burger patties, cheese, grilled onions, over easy eggs, and chili. Finishing the whole thing in one sitting may induce a food coma." - Jeffy Mai, Eater Staff
"The home of the “Slinger” is back. More than 30 months after the Diner Grill was ravaged by a Christmas Eve fire — after which ownership vowed to reopen in two months — the iconic 24-hour diner on Irving Park Road that’s open 364 days out of the year finally reopened to the public this morning. And that public couldn’t contain its excitement to step back into the iconic space for greasy diner fare and its legendary “Slinger.” Although much of the divey diner underwent a massive reconstruction, including a completely-rebuilt interior with new red stools and new signage, it looks and feels like the same spot that had been open since 1939. The fire destroyed the back room of the space, among other damage, and the city asked for other infrastructure improvements to bring it up to code. The last stretch of delays were due to waits for city inspections. The menu is the same as it was for decades before the fire. Take a look at it here, as it features the familiar egg dishes, pancakes, French toast, omelets, sandwiches, and skillets. And yes, the “Slinger” — the diner’s signature mess of two burger patties, two sunny side-up eggs, cheese, hash browns, onions, chili and served with a side of toast that has been so popular with industry customers, late-night revelers, and the rest of its clientele — is still available. The “Dick Burger” remains an off-menu request." - Daniel Gerzina
"Diner Grill, a 79-year-old restaurant, is set to reopen after being closed due to a fire on Christmas Eve 2016. Known for its 24/7 service and signature dish, the 'Slinger,' the tiny restaurant is a legend among Chicago's restaurant industry. The new buildout retains the same layout as before, emphasizing what made the venue special for nearly eight decades." - Ashok Selvam
