Where to Eat and Drink in Navy Yard

"The Navy Yard outpost of chef Mike Friedman’s Jersey-style pizzeria serves fried cauliflower, clam-topped pies and plus warm chocolate chip cookies a la mode. Last year, Friedman and the team added a trattoria-styled menu full of pastas, salumi, entrees, and more. That includes rigatoni with spring pea cremosa, asparagus, mint, parmigiano, and roasted garlic breadcrumbs and Tuscan fried chicken with crispy rosemary, chili honey, and parmigiano. Order pickup or delivery online, or wolf down a pizza on the patio or its rooftop." - Tierney Plumb, Eater Staff

I moved to DC almost three years ago and have been at Dock 79 for less than a year. I’m thankful for the move. The location is wonderful, daily views of the water and sunrises have been great as I’ve processed the last year with a lot of grief. Nice to be in a rather stress free and friendly environment. Staff are polite, friendly and professional. Devon the concierge is welcoming and attentive. Ervin does a great job supervising security and always greets everyone with a friendly hello. Peter is also friendly and personable, nice to be greeted when I come home for the evening. Destiny, the weekend concierge was a jewel! Of the minor maintenance request I have had, they have been responded to and fixed in less than 48 hours. Cleaning staff is very thorough and always working. Community events have been catered, well organized and fun! There’s also a Facebook page for residents which adds to the building’s sense of community. So glad I’m no longer in my previous building.

I’ve had the pleasure of calling Dock 79 home for nearly a year, and I recently moved into a new apartment to enjoy an even better view and a balcony. John and Natasha made the entire transition effortless, guiding me every step of the way. From the moment I moved in last November, my experience here has been nothing short of amazing. I highly recommend Dock 79 to anyone considering a move to the area—this place truly feels like home. And if you want a smooth and stress-free experience, make sure to reach out to John—he’ll take great care of you! - Taurean

Heading into my second year here and I love it. Living so close to water is great, and the views are amazing. The management team is top notch and the entire staff is friendly, and helpful. Irvin is great! He is quick to lend a hand, and is always kind. *UPDATE 2 later** Still here and still loving it. Had some maintainence concerns recently, and Andy was so helpful and informative. Just an incredibly responsive team here.

I toured Dock 79 and was very impressed. This is the nicest apartment building that I’ve seen by the ballpark! Amazing view, amenities you’d never even think of… Keyaunna was THE BEST!!!! I spoke with her the day before and when I arrived for my tour she was attentive, knowledgeable, and patient! No more than 30 minutes after my appointment, she followed up with a personalized online menu with my preferred floor plans. All in all, I had a great experience at Dock 79.

Google
Dock79 is not just another apartment complex; it’s home. I stumbled upon this building after spending months looking at apartments, and I am so glad I found this gem. I just renewed for my second year, and I hope to live here as long as possible. I moved in December 2020 from out of state. At that time, I worked with David (who isn’t here anymore). Because of the pandemic, I wasn’t able to visit, and I was worried about this because who wants to sign a lease without seeing the place first?? David went above and beyond, chatting with me over the phone and answering ALL my questions (I had many). But not just that, he was incredibly responsive after that call as we got the lease signed and everything set up. Because I was coming from out of state, I was getting a bunch of stuff delivered, and it wasn’t a problem that some of it came a few weeks before I’d be there. David even offered to move some of the packages to my apartment! The day I moved in, I was greeted by Erv (the security guard). He was insistent on helping me unload my stuff, even though I kept telling him he didn’t have to help because that’s not his job!! :) When I finished bringing everything up to my apartment, he started bringing up the packages I had delivered. There were many, and they were heavy - talk about going above and beyond!! Erv is always offering to help me with my heavier packages and is always asking how I’m doing. it's the little things :) The amenities here are excellent and make this place feel like a hotel. The building is always so clean (shout out to the awesome people who do this!!) There’s a little aquarium in the lobby, shelves for food delivery, and a coffee machine. The gym has everything you need plus two peloton bikes! The rooftop is perfect, with a pool opening in spring and staying open into fall. Management always has some event planned (e.g., tailgate party for the Nationals, Comedy shows). And to top it off, you’re literally a short walk away from everything - the stadium, restaurants, a grocery store. If the amenities don’t sell you on living here, the staff will. The maintenance staff - Andy, Oscar, and JB are friendly and quickly respond to service requests. The leasing office staff are just delightful. Yasmin and Jeremiah are always smiling and happy to answer questions. Ben, the community manager, is always accessible and pleasant. I worked with him for renewing my lease, and he was kind and patient with all my questions about the process. I do not doubt that if I had a question or a problem, I could go to Yasmin, Jeremiah, or Ben to get it figured out! The front desk staff is also excellent! They’re always quick to grab your packages and answer questions! If you want to live in a home where you feel valued and taken care of, Dock79 is the place for you!

Beware of unethical & unlawful rental practices. I submitted a rental application to Dock79 and paid a $50 application fee. I provided all required documentation, including my Social Security number. Dock79 canceled my application without processing it — no background or credit check was ever conducted — and they refused to refund the fee. This violates DC Code § 42–3505.10, which states: “If a housing provider receives an application fee and does not process the rental application, the fee shall be returned to the applicant.” Despite multiple requests and reminders of this legal obligation, Dock79 has ignored the law and kept my money. This behavior is unacceptable. If this is how they treat prospective residents, I strongly urge others to look elsewhere.

Google
Only lived in Dock 79 for a couple months but I've really enjoyed my time. They're always doing maintenance around the building to up keep, their maintenance team is fast and responsive to work order request, their concierge team is very nice, and it is in a nice location with great views of the Potomac River! When first touring apartment buildings in the area, they were one of the only apartments that were willing to take me on a tour as a walk in.

Google
6/7/25 Update: The addition of ‘Rooftop Russ’ djing by the pool is the perfect way to start summer. Dock’s pool is already gorgeous with beautiful views but having a legit DJ during the day on Saturdays really elevate the living experience here. Top tier customer service across the board in all departments. Very uncommon in Navy Yard, Dock79 definitely sticks out in a great way.

Yelp
My wife and I have lived in the building, essentially since it opened. It's a wonderful building and the staff is incredible. Don't let the 4/5 star review reflect too poorly. I have high standards for a five star review and little things like the lack of designated parking, zero guest parking, elevator issues (there are three, but one always seems to be on independent use or out of service, and there's not an easy way to just take the stairs up) pull the rating down a bit. I'd give 4.5 if I could, but it's not an option. I will say the staff is 5 stars - from maintenance to the leasing office and front desk, but I particularly wanted to give a shoutout to Irvin. I feel better knowing he's working his patrols around and in the building. He's a friendly face who always says hello and is willing to lend a hand, whether it's something simple like opening a door or grabbing a package for you, to one time when I was hospitalized and a new mattress arrived -- he lugged the whole thing up to our place for my wife. Great guy. Great building. Great neighborhood.

Yelp
Ahmed has been helping us and he's made the transition from a not-so-great apartment complex really welcoming and easy. He's been patient and accommodating. I place great value on how the leasing office and concierge treats current and future residents because no one wants to come home to bad/negative attitudes. The complex itself is well maintained. Looking forward to the upgraded dog park, but what makes the community is the people. We like that they host events consistently. It's also one of the few places that won't have constant construction around it (with the exception of the west side of the building). The units are priced comparably to others within Navy Yard, with solid amenities. Dock79 is inviting and active in a relaxed atmosphere (many units face the Potomac). For a fun vibe, you don't have to go far outside. While there may be a lot of foot traffic for games, there's only one road near the building and it tends to be blocked for games (which I prefer as opposed to constant honking and traffic).

Yelp
I have been to a lot it prosperities including living at the Wharf and what made me really decide to come to Dock79 as amenities are sometimes all smoke and mirrors is the staff and service at Dock79. Especially Ahmed. He listened to my requirements or wish list and found me the perfect apartment. Ahmed is just the best there is!

Yelp
We called to set up and inquire about availability, we wanted a 2 bedroom two bath with a balcony and wanted to make sure there were some available before we headed over in person. Marcus answered and the entire experience took a nose dive, quick. I asked to be transferred to leasing and he asked who was like calling, I said my name and he asked what it was in regards to, I said leasing a unit. He then said, " well there's a reason I'm asking these questions. They're going to want these answers." I said that I am calling to inquire about availability. He then put me on hold and as I was holding the call disconnected, not sure whose fault it was. I called back and he answered again then later transferred me to Yazmine. After explaining what happened she said that she was sitting behind him all along and that he hadn't done anything wrong. I told her that I'd like to just end the conversation and backtrack on considering renting. Customer service is absolute trash. Not the service I was expecting for going to tour a $4300 a month apartment. Update 2/11/2021: Got a call from Stacy (the property manager). Very professional and apologetic. I do appreciate that she took the time to reach out to us. Unfortunately, our initial experience was so bad with the aforementioned individuals that I want no part of this community. If you're looking for an all around good place to live I'd highly recommend Crossings. We have nothing but good things to say about our entire rental experience with them.

Yelp
I've lived at Dock 79 for nearly 1.5 years and love it. I was a bit nervous at first about the bedroom sizes but if you're efficient at organizing and styling you won't even notice. Amenities!!! I'm big on fitness and I compare the gym to a petite Vida fitness. There's a good amount of cardio equipment plus barbells, dumbbells, Smith machine, kettlebells, weighted rope, bands, medicine balls, etc. the rooftop pool is awesome and has a great view. Lots of areas to lounge around up there and cook out too. The terrace downstairs has fire pits and grills with a river view. Most importantly: the staff. The leasing woman who signed us is no longer there but she was the most important reason we decided to rent here. Her genuine friendliness and welcoming attitude must have been a requirement to work here bc the entire team here has the same great attitude. Literally from everyone in the leasing office, concierge, security, and maintenance are way too awesome for their own good. Lol. There's a bunch of social events at the apartment where you can mix and mingle with fellow neighbors. The neighborhood is awesome too. Not only are you living near the stadium but there are two hot restaurants right in the building: All Purpose and The Salt Line. My roommate and I call the walk to the Yards area "a walk to town". It's a short 5 minute walk near the river and over a bridge to a bunch of stores, restaurants, and grocery. The whole area is very dog friendly too. Places close around midnight around here so it's pretty quiet late night which was must needed coming from busy U st.

Yelp
I am writing this as an apartment shopper, not a tenant. That said, I had such a positive experience with the staff that I felt compelled to share it. Both leasing agents, David and Yasmin, were extremely responsive and friendly. When I toured the building, it was clear that the amenities and location were amazing. I met one of the concierge staff and a security officer, both of whom were courteous. I would also add that the units I toured were clean, new, and well thought-out. I highly recommend touring this building if you are considering it. While you're there, take a walk around the area. It's very, very beautiful and serene. Just make sure you park in the open lot rather than the garage -- you will save yourself $5/hour.

Yelp
Dock79 is an amazing place to live, in large part thanks to the amazing staff that take such good care of us. My most recent example is that I stopped by the front desk after my morning walk to ask a quick question, and David told me I had a couple of bigger packages. I told him I had to run upstairs to jump on a work call and that I would come back for them later. I went upstairs and a little while later I heard a knock at my door, and when I opened it I saw David walking away and the large packages sitting at my doorstep. What. A. Legend. Additionally the maintenance guys went above and beyond to fix our AC unit that went out on a Friday night before a 90 degree weekend. Their efforts were sooo appreciated to do whatever they had to do to find the parts to fix it for us on a Saturday morning. We highly recommend living here!

Yelp
The first thing that set Dock 79 apart from some of the other buildings in the area is the leasing staff. I was moving from across the country, I flew in for a weekend just to get an apartment. I had done months of research; I had narrowed down my list of places to look at, made my appointments, and brought my parents with me (because I respect their opinion and critical eyes). I hated all of the apartments! I was distraught! I had one day left of my trip and no apartment. I was frantically searching additional buildings in the Navy Yard area on Google and trying to schedule appointments for my last day in town. Due to work, this was the only area I was interested in living in. I ran into the issue of leasing offices having no available "tour times." Not Dock 79 though. They squeezed me in and were so nice. The woman no longer works here but over the past 2.5 years, all of the leasing staff have been friendly, helpful, and all-around nice people. My favorite part about the building is the floor plans. This is what sold me on the building. I love my apartment! It feels very spacious and it flows well. I also love the kitchen island that came with the apartment. I have a full one bedroom, with windows (that's key in this area since many 1 bedrooms are really convertible studios since the bedrooms don't have a window). Also, the finishes in the apartment are all quality. Our apartments are also pretty much sound proof. I hear nothing from my neighbors. The only thing that comes through is the bed from the apartment above me. Luckily though, that noise is always short, so I can live with it. The front doors aren't sound proof so I can hear when someone is in the hall but we don't have people congregating in our halls so that noise is always brief too. The amenities in the building are first class. I will happily argue that we have the best rooftop pool in the area. The club room is gorgeous and is the perfect place to host events. The gym is a dream. We also have a study, which is a good place to work from home. The first floor has WIFI, which makes working down there super convenient and easy. Also the furniture is comfortable and they get it professionally cleaned frequently. The super fancy fish tank in the lobby, the free coffee, and the new cold brew and kombucha on tap for purchase take this building over the top. While in the lobby you'll run into some of my favorite people on staff. David Ellis Sr. who works the 7a-3p shift and Cameron Reshard who works the 3p-11p shift at the front desk are personal life savers for me. They always have my back and help me with any problem I have. On top of that they have gone the extra mile to know who I am. This means that I get top-notch personalized service. They tell me when I have packages because I don't check my email. They tell me when anything and everything is going on in the building. When I was hosting a work event here, David helped me with EVERYTHING. Literally everything. He answered all of my questions and made sure I had everything I needed so that my event could be a success. When I had a friend coming over who was going to drive me to BWI to pick up my mom and there was no parking because of a baseball game. Cameron helped me. They literally make my life easier. Also Erwin Waddy, top flight security, is so friendly and helpful too. He always asks how me and my parents are doing and keeps up with my extra curricular activities. Special shout out to Stacey in leasing who has also helped me since the beginning. The main con for me is the baseball stadium. I hate that there are a million games a year and they close off our street (Potomac Ave) at the beginning and end of every game. Also the traffic and lack of parking caused by the games are also huge cons. Having thousands of people in the neighborhood on top of the people who already live here also interferes with my cell service sometimes. Noise-wise, our windows are great so I'm usually not bothered. The garbage trucks for the stadium are loud and there's nothing like thousands of, what sounds like, glass bottles being dumped early in the morning but overall noise does not bother me. We are at the back of the stadium so the noise from the game isn't projected this way. Things to note: It's pricey to live here. This is a dog community. We have so many restaurants in the neighborhood but unfortunately most of them are only subpar. I have 4 go-tos that aren't fast food like Roti and Wise Guy, which are also very good, so my needs are somewhat met. The restaurants are on the pricey side. Whole Foods and Harris Teeter meet our grocery needs. CVS has anything else we might need. Lastly, the Navy Yard metro stop and the bus stops on M street and New Jersey cover transportation needs.

Yelp
We love living at Dock! Have been here for a year and a half now and I'm so glad that this is the place we chose to call home for our first apartment in DC. Both of us moved from out of state and didn't know much about the city but my fiancé actually saw Erv in his sheriff hat walking around during the initial tour and knew it was the place for us. All of the staff has been awesome. The maintenance guys are so great and super efficient. Front desk staff has changed a bit with some of them moving to the Maren but everyone is always super friendly and accommodating. Erv (security and Jack of all trades) is the best and adds so much character to this place and Stacey is great also. Pre-covid they put on so many awesome events for the residents and during COVID there have been free taco and margarita deliveries, zoom events like watercolor painting, wine and cheese nights delivered to our door and so much more. Living here during COVID they took so many precautions and really care about the safety of the residents and staff. Masks are required in any common areas and elevators and we have always felt safe in this building. You can't beat the views, the restaurants in the building are amazing, great amenities and staff is friendly.

Yelp
I moved into Dock 79 in April 2019 and only stayed one year and actually counted down the days till I left that horrid place and am much happier now. My apartment had a balcony overlooking the water, and the layout was wonderful. When moving in, I received wonderful customer service; they even face timed me with the apartment before moving from several states away. Unfortunately, after about a month, the truth started to reveal itself about Dock 79. Positive things: - They decorated for most holidays - They had a variety of events - The security team was courteous and often went above and beyond - About half of the concierges were very personable and professional Negative things and a few instances that I had to deal with as a resident: - There is a consistent fishy smell throughout the halls (except in the common areas where they kept toxic scent plugs that many residents asked they remove since they caused headaches for many of us) that will stay in your clothes. - Immature, inexperienced management staff. Maintenance would schedule 'routine' checks approximately every other month. They claimed they need to replace vents, but what they actually do is go to your apartment and look around. I watched this on my nanny cam. - Unreasonable office hours for people who work. They are very unaccommodating to your time, and when you leave work early to meet with them, they mysteriously had to leave early. - From my first day moving in, I was promised we would have a Verizon tower put in since there was little to no service (I only got service on my balcony) and through my last day and beyond the Verizon tower was never installed. - Events that occur during traditional work hours, causing those who have to travel to work to make a living unable to attend. - Not having vegan OR vegetarian options at events. - Not offering non-alcoholic beverages at all events (I even asked if I could just have the fruit juice that was going into the mixed drinks, and they told me no, that they had to save it for the alcoholic beverages). - Lack of customer service included not believing residents. I had a large package that was placed in the refrigerator when it shouldn't have been ruining about $400 worth. I eventually I had to go to the property managers boss to get the issues somewhat resolved three months later (I had to argue with them to prove they were damaged even though it was a apart of my business and I lost customers and sent photos of proof from the first day). - Printers that they claim are available either do not work or do not work for all computers - Spotty Wi-Fi when you are in the gym - Blatant favoritism towards certain residents. For example, during a costume party, they claimed to have announced that they were giving out prizes, but they were literally handing them to some residents (even those not in costumes) and non-residents. - Claiming to have off-site events, but registry links never worked - Treats and giveaways only apply for dogs - They allow children's birthday parties to continue all day and night outside while they are screaming. There were blow-up jumpy things, kids screaming everywhere, and parents being obnoxiously loud. Despite the many phone calls to security and the many residents actually in person complaining, they did nothing because it was a 'private event.' - The restaurant noise (music and people) will go on past quiet hours, and there is nothing the apartment staff can or will do. - When the world series occurs, good luck getting sleep and even more luck in getting to your apartment. - You have to pay for guest parking (even when it is not baseball season). If you have a guest coming and there is a game playing, they have to pay the 'game day' price, which can exceed $50 for just 30 minutes. - The pool. Very loud, lots of intoxication, the children have water guns and will squirt water on everyone--even those of us with books that are away from the pool. The view is NOT worth the stress, the smell, or the lack of customer service.

Yelp
I lived at dock 79 for about 2 years and it exceeded all of my expectations. This place has all the amenities you could ask for. The gym has everything you could possibly need whether it's a squat rack, yoga room, or even a peloton bike. The club room is very spacious and very accommodating if you need a room for a large party. My favorite part about Dock 79 is the rooftop. The infinity rooftop pool is unbelievable and is a great perk during the summer. If you want an amazing view for the 4th of July, you can see at least 8 different firework shows at once. Lastly, the management staff of Dock 79 is extremely friendly and helpful. There is one in particular that stands out. Mr. Jorge, the best maintenance guy around. He can fix anything. I don't think this apartment building would run as smoothly as it does if it weren't for him. His leadership is impeccable and you can tell the other employees follow his lead. I would recommend that you move here, there is free coffee and hot chocolate in the lobby.

Yelp
Living at Dock 79 the past year has been nothing short of amazing. From responsive leasing staff whose doors are always open to answer any resident questions to the maintenance and front desk teams who respond to all requests in record time and are always willing to help, I truly feel like i love in a community of friends. I can say that my days are always made just a bit better when I am greeted in the lobby on my way out to work with a cheerful smile and "have a great day!" from our awesome concierge Dave. Dock 79 isn't just another Navy Yard apartment, it truly is a home!

Yelp
Dock 79 is a fantastic place to live! I lived at this residence for approximately 2 years and loved every second of it. I explored all of the various living options in navy yard, but nothing compares to the top notch amenities and service that you will receive from Dock 79. From the second you walk in the front door, you will be warmly greeted by Mr. Ellis behind the front desk who can help you with anything you may need from packages and dry cleaning to great conversation. In regards to the leasing staff, Stacy and Ahmed with Kettler Management will do everything they can to make your renting experience as easy and enjoyable as possible. These two are the most outgoing and professional leasing staff that I have ever had the pleasure of working with. The staff works hard to remember names as well as set up various social events in the building or surrounding around to connect residents with their neighbors. Their doors are always open if questions arise! Lastly, the maintenance staff at Dock 79 is the best you'll ever find. Jorge and his staff are experienced, friendly, and timely in meeting all maintenance requests whether it be a serious issue or something as simply as replacing a light bulb. They are the glue that keeps the building up and running. Dock 79 is a great place to live. The residents are friendly and the amenities are top notch. Nothing compares to watching the sunset over the river from the rooftop pool or from your balcony.

Yelp
As follow up, do not worry about alleviating noise for me, i blissfully moved out w several other residents. I hope you have finally in reality designated dogpark for frustrated residents as promised. It was free for all to point where most dock 79 residents were not using. At night after the 2 block walk thru construction site it was dark in park. There were also dogs from all over navy yard that frequent the park. It was often too full for residents "exclusive use".

Yelp
When I toured Dock 79, the apartment appeared beautiful. But the Management team is one of the worst many residents have ever seen. Parties getting to excessive without enforcement, to the point where police have been called for assaults, brawls and destroying the property; substantial security not being employed to keep the front door secure let alone the building. Inconsistent applications of policies, some written, others they pull out of thin air and not in signed leases with tenants make this a walking disaster in many ways. The management specifically, Stacey targets tenants that they party with and drink either while on duty or off onsite. Due to safety concerns, particularly as it relates to drug raids, fires, and police visits, I would never recommend this place to even someone who could handle highly unsafe situations. For the rent they ask, they definitely don't provide a living experience up to the sticker price.
