The Legacy of Food at Southern Gas Stations Is Rooted in Black Survival | Eater

"Located between Ravenel and Johns Island in South Carolina, this small, locally owned gas station doubles as a roadside eatery offering Southern comfort foods: fried chicken, biscuits, fried hand pies, and country ham sit on the menu alongside snack staples such as nabs (crackers filled with peanut butter or cheese) and an extensive selection of chips, evoking the old-school, homey convenience-store fare beloved by travelers." - Amethyst Ganaway

I stopped here on my way back to Georgia after a VA appt. While at the counter ordering food, I took my blue parrot headset off and set it on the counter so I could hear my granddaughter tell me what she wanted to eat. After ordering and paying for our food..I grabbed my purse and food, walked out the door to get back on the road. About an hour into our ride, I received a phone call and proceeded to look for my headset and couldn't find it. I knew i had forgotten it and tried to call Dodge's chicken with no answer. So I then googled the corporate office, I called and left a message on the voicemail. I then continued to drive towards home. We made a pit stop and when I came back to the car I had a voicemail from the corporate office stating they had my headset and put it up in the office. I felt grateful. The kind lady then told me not to worry that they would take care of me and would have it mailed. I gave her my information and I received a text the next morning with the tracking number from usps. I offered to send the shipping money and I was told to not worry about it. I received in the mail yesterday (Saturday August 2, 2025). The headset cost $180. Thank you to all that took care of me. Im truly grateful!

Live in walterboro pass here frequently on the way to Charleston. Stop almost every trip for gas and chicken. Favorite is the 3 piece chicken strip meal, just wish it came with 3 tater wedges instead of 2 (keep the roll, give me another wedge) Oh bring back the dome lids for slushies. Good corn dogs too!

Google
I would have to say Dodge store has some of the best chicken around and their egg rolls are pretty irresistible to. Are pizza rolls are really good and their biscuits are mostly good especially with a little bit of hot sauce. Their wings always the same got a little bit of hotness to them. If you want breakfast lunch or early dinner definitely stop by here regardless if you need gas but most of the time they're pretty competitive on their fuel prices always. I like the place I've been going to it there are 30 plus years and my father longer than that. They do need to do a little updating on the inside with the floors so watch your step Don't Fall but otherwise stop by and get you some chicken. Oh yeah there bathrooms are really clean to

Everything needed to supply the most particular gas station gourmand. All the sodas and slushies, plus an outstanding fried food selection. Take your statins and enjoy lunch!

Google
Their employee named Preston really did an excellent job with serving me and serving a couple of the customers that were before me and one that came after me. He was very thorough about what I wanted. This young man made me feel really welcomed and I recognize this establishment to my family and friends.... Thank you Preston and thank you dodges chicken for providing great excellent service.

Google
My husband and son went in after his flag football game and said Preston was super friendly and had amazing customer service! Pleasantly surprised to find out the full menu is served until 11pm!! Thanks again!

Google
Not big rig friendly. There’s a huge dip trying to get out of the pumps. It would be nice if they would try to fix it so RVers have some place to stop along this stretch of road. . Diesel was cheap but not worth the risk.

Yelp
Dodge's is always great, I have had it outside of Ft. Knox, Charleston and now Panama City. It's never let me down. The chicken tendies never let me down.

Yelp
This was our first time here. What a hidden gem. We've lived here on Johns Island for almost 5 years and kept talking about going there and today we finally did. When we entered and told them that we were new we were offered each of wing to try I ended up getting 12 of them. I also chose to get the JoJo's which I realized were huge wedge potatoes. They were so good. My husband got the spicy wings and egg rolls. We definitely will be back. The gentleman that waited on us was very polite.

Yelp
Great biscuit sandwiches .... Had the fried chicken egg cheese and the sausage egg and cheese biscuits and both were excellent. Service was nice and efficient. Will definitely be craving more. Fancy no but GOOD - convenience store environment. Their wings looked amazing!

Yelp
I've had KFC, I've had Churches Chicken, I've had Lee's Chicken, but until you've had Dodges Chicken , you haven't had fried chicken! I stopped to get gas at Dodge's because they have the lowest gas prices around Charleston. Saw a KFC right beside the gas station. It made me hungry for some fried chicken. Went inside Dodge's to pay for my gas and saw the most amazing thing, giant pieces of golden fried chicken and homemade mashed potatoes and gravy. Bought two chicken breasts and mash potatoes and gravey. This place is strictly take-out food, so there is no place to eat inside. The service was fast and friendly and the price was right. After leaving Dodge's my wife and went to near by Caw Caw Park, found a picnic table, sat down and had an amazing fried chicken dinner. Not only were the chicken breast as big a softball, they were crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside. I know it's a gas station, but I would recommend that you give it a try. No wonder the KFC parking lot was empty!

Yelp
Hidden gem in a gas station, hot, fresh and delicious. Friendly staff, good prices, and wonderfully buttery biscuits!

Yelp
I'm from a small town in Arkansas and we didn't have nice restaurants there. We had gas stations and that's where we got our " fast food " and fried chicken. I've been away from home for many years now and still crave dodges chicken, crispitos and pizza sticks. The amount of joy I found when I discovered there was a dodges only 30 minutes from me cannot be described with words. I immediately got in the car and headed over. Terri was there and had no idea that I was about to make the strangest request she would have for the day. I bought all of the crispitos. I got pizza sticks and chicken, but literally all of the crispitos. She was so understanding of what I wanted and made it fun as I'm sure it's not often people get so very excited about the food. It tastes just like home. Thank you Terri for going above and beyond. I'll see you when I need a refill. You're an amazing human.

Yelp
Pay attention to what's being ordered and make sure it's correct. Employees could have a little better attitude when dealing with customers. Understand it could go both ways with attitude.

Yelp
If you like heavy coated fried chicken you might like the chicken here It's already cooked and in a container in a windowed counter. Several other fried items too Like fries and hush puppies I couldn't tell what everything was but people were buying it I stopped to get some chicken for a born southern friend gas and the restroom Gas was easy and clean working pumps. Good price. Restroom clean and nice Chicken was fast to get and friendly staff Lots of convenience items The breading on the chicken was way to thick for me and dry from sitting in the window but good flavor

Yelp
This is the treat my husband wanted our first night in our new home in Ravenel. A Red-top neighborhood iconic place to stop, and serves up all manner of fried. We tried the chicken egg roll, spicy wings, and their regular dark meat chicken. I think our favorite was the spicy wing. Good spice without burning your taste buds off. We were surprised that they don't have a spicy chicken option. The fried chicken meat - to - breading ratio was a bit heavy on the breading for our taste when it came to the fried chicken. But, I do recommend this place, if for nothing else their longevity to the area and the people are pretty darn friendly, and proud of their product.

Yelp
Nasty... Chicken was hard crusted setting to warmer too long... too much bread on chicken... have potato wedges as a side and a roll... ask for ketchup and and can you believe they do not have ketchup for the potato wedges. People behind counter treat you like you are bothering them

Yelp
I was on my way back from Charleston, SC to south of Savannah, Ga and thought to myself, hmmm, I will stop at Dodge's and grab some chicken. I had done it a time or two before and unfortunately it keeps getting worse the more times I stop. Unfortunately I was a few miles down the road when I decided to start eating or I would have went back. The chicken is absolutely the driest with thick breading. Worst fried chicken I have ever had...And I mean that...hands down the worst. I should have went next door to KFC. What I had was 8 peices of awful chicken in tons of breaded batter. They forgot my rolls to go with my meal. I tried to call the number on the receipt for nothing, it says the number doesn't exist. The guy behind the counter was just in a hurry to sell me the food and get me out, must have seen my Georgia plates. But this chicken is cheap and fills you up with the covered up floury skin, the chicken underneath was so thin I got 3 bites off one thigh and though, I will try another, the same result. But the chicken at Dodges was plain disgusting, bone dry (rip away some of the overly breaded peanut oil skin) and "meh" taste....the skin that is....the chicken itself was awful.

Yelp
On several foodie FB pages Dodge's comes in as one of the best fried chicken spots in Charleston. I have heard it from many a friend as well. I have been here forever but never had it so when i was at a friends home in the area I decided to give it a try. We went and ordered. I got a leg thigh, and a breast. I also got 2 jojos shich is their big fried potato wedges and a bun. Chicken was pretty darn good and loved the jojos as well. The chicken was not too salty like I normally find and not too greasy either. The flavor was good as well. I also like the jojojs with a little ketchup and mustard. Is it the best chicken I ever had. Probably not but I think I get the hype. Seems like really good chicken that only occasionally does not hit the spot. We went early luckily which made for no wait but they were ready with plenty of chicken as the customers started to roll in. Great option if going to picnic, boat ride, etc. We will be back!

Yelp
No idea how they only have 3 stars, seriously some of the best fried chicken in Charleston. Plus lots of other fried goodies to choose from.

Yelp
I come home from Missouri. I have lived in Charleston for eight years. After eight year of disappointment in home style food in Charleston. I was finally satisfied at Dodges. I don't post bad reviews. There are a LOT of unimpressive restaurants in Charleston. Dodges Chicken is the real deal.

Yelp
Dodge's is the place to go for fried chicken and Jojo's! (Fried potato wedges) The prices for the food are very reasonable. Of course, this is also a great spot to grab gas and any other convenience items. For a quick (unhealthy meal), Dodge's is the place to go!

Yelp
The first, time I, drove up to Dodge Chicken, I said "yea, right". How can an old Gas Station serve anything that might be even close to good chicken. Well, everyone told me that this is the best chicken around. So, I'll try anything once. Believe me when I tell you, it is a must if you love chicken. You must get there when the chicken just comes out, wow, the taste is to die for. I have been there many times, and have taken friends there, who also said 'what', but they too were convinced. This place is always busy. Next door is a KFC...I've never seen them busy. What does that tell you? Frank G

Yelp
Went here before the chicken was great .Today it was greasy fatty and we ate half and threw the rest away.My stomach has been upset all day.We won't go back $10.oo of chicken you can't eat not good.

Yelp
OMG, I am amazed anyone would give this place a 5 stars let alone 2 stars. The chicken is absolutely dry with thick breading. Worst fried chicken I have ever had...And I mean that...hands down the worst. What came to mind with my 8 peices of awful chicken was a mummified chicken in tons of breaded batter. Many people only care about the batter and skin so that must be what happening with those reviews, but what about the dry mummified corpse chicken below? I am ashamed that in the South people gave this a thumbs up. It's the South for crying out loud! But this chicken is cheap and fills you up with the covered up floury skin. A place called Chicken Holiday in NJ is still my favorite but down here (been here for 20 years now) believe it or not Publix has the best friend chicken I have found so far...and I do search. The best wings are Hubee D's. But the chicken at Dodges was plain disgusting, bone dry (rip away some of the overly breaded peanut oil skin) and "meh" taste....the skin that is....the chicken itself was awful.

Yelp
Staff needs some sensitivity training. Today after I bought my food and turned to get a drink, the lady behind the counter comes to me with a "maam". I turn around thinking I left something but she comes to me smiling saying "you here alone?". I say yes stupidly and she says "well someone likes you". I said "ok thank you" as I was tired and thinking she was just trying to spread some cheer. She continues on though. "You don't believe me? he (guy behind the counter) likes you." ugh. "ok" i replied wanting to finish and go. "Ok?" she replies in a shrill voice, upset im taking the bait and making me look at her. "you got a boyfriend" she asks smiling. I am mortified and wanting her to leave me alone because she's getting upset I am not taking the bait. I do a quick glance over and the guy has his arms folded looking at others. Oh yeah, he's burning up for me. "whats wrong why you upset? Im trying to help you! check yourself" she says then. I reply Im not upset im just tired and having a bad day. she wont leave the drink station so I quickly finished and left. what is going on?!?!

Yelp
Simply awesome fried food, I basically only get the pizza sticks, corndogs and chicken strips but it is all pretty dang tasty. Just take a gander at the items under the heat lamps and make sure it looks like it came out of the fry oil in the last hour or so.... fountain drink choices go on and on and the gas is cheapest around.
google avatar

Yelp
You wouldn't be able to tell from the outside of this place, but they have some of the best fried chicken that I've had in Charleston! I had a chicken thigh and a drumstick and they were both delicious, with crispy, flavorful skin. The potato wedges that came with the chicken were seasoned well and also nice and crispy. I tried the pizza stick, which was okay, but tasted just like it was something that was frozen and heated up. I also got a turkey leg, which I thought was a unique offering on the menu. It was tasty and reminded me of the ones I get at the fair! Overall, I would definitely go back for the fried chicken.

Yelp
Worth the 20 minute drive outside of Charleston, SC for some great fried chicken at a great price!!
google avatar

Yelp
Say what you well about gas station food, but this place rocks! They serve up some of the best fried chicken around, minus my mother's of course. They have wings, smoked turkey legs, corn dogs and some of the best breakfast biscuits around. Stop there. You will not be disappointed!

Julian W.

Yelp
I thought I would give Dodge's Chicken another try this evening and it was a mistake. The chicken was obviously cooked hours ahead and sat in their viewing bin under heat lamps. The exterior was hard and difficult to bite. Once penetrated, the thigh had chunks of raw dough under the crust. This was my third and last trip to Dodges. I hate to be critical, but it simply was not edible.
google avatar

Yelp
Awesome chicken wings. I can't drive past this place without pulling in for their wings! Also, their gas prices are the best!

Yelp
This is a gas station... However we were delighted to see pressure fryers when we walked in. We ordered the mixed basket and got a sampling of wings, breast, drumsticks, and thighs. They had a special on oven baked macaroni and rolls so we got both. The "oven baked macaroni" was good it was just prepackaged crate and barrel.. but not bad- the rolls were nothing special. The fried chicken crust was amazing, super flavorful and crispy. The meat however was all mostly dried out, but that could have been a fluke. Overall great fried chicken, just make or find your own sides.

Yelp
The are the best in the industry. Wow. Always boomin always nice. Clean rest rooms.
