The 14 Best Ice Cream Shops In Houston

"Getting gelato from the Austin import Dolce Neve in The Heights feels like buying yourself a bouquet of flowers just for the hell of it. Indulgent, fulfilling, and somewhat necessary. The Italian-owned shop serves some of the best classic gelato in Houston. While the flavors rotate frequently, if you ever see something with goat cheese, it’s an immediate yes. 23 Essential Houston Ice Cream Shops

"Since opening in Houston in 2017, this Austin-based gelateria has been serving up more than a dozen flavors daily. While guests can count on delicious mainstays like Madagascar vanilla and its crema Dolce Neve, a custard with lemon zest, lovers of the frozen treat can also look forward to a rotation of flavors and seasonal scoops, like its mascarpone and figs, tiramisu, and whiskey and pecan ice cream, and its strawberry sorbet." - Brittany Britto Garley

Stopped in for a Mothers’ Day treat and was not disappointed. Lots of inventive flavors. I had salted caramel, ricotta honey pistachio and chocolate with orange peel. All were delicious! My favorite was one my husband got, goat cheese blueberry. Will return for that one!

Dolce Neve Gelato is a gelato shop located in the Heights and offers a seasonal and consistent flavors. I was able to try the stracciatella, goat cheese and blueberries, and dolce neve. My favorite was the goat cheese and blueberries. There was a bunch of crushed blueberries, and the goat cheese complemented the fruitiness. The Dolce Neve has lemon in it, and the bright zestiness went well with the vanilla base. The flavors were sweet but not too overwhelmingly sweet, which I prefer. The gelato was creamy and soft. The small comes with two flavors, and although it looks small, they pile it up high with gelato! The staff was friendly and allowed us to sample the flavors and also answered any questions we had. The gelato is made in house. Would definitely come back to try their different and changing flavors!

Came here for the first time after an tooth extraction (i deserved it lol). I got the LARGE (big backs let me hear you holler) which fits 4 flavors, medium is 3 and small is two. The flavors I chose were Vanilla from Madagascar, custard and raspberry , hazelnut and goat cheese + pecan. Glad it did it was SOOOOO CREAMY AND SOFT. 10/10 gelato and they play bangers in here to! Def a vibe come through if you’re in the area! Support local!!

Google
Gelato was alright! My standard is a bit high but I enjoyed what I tried. The coffee could have been a bit stronger. Pistachio was perfectly rich and nutty. My friends really enjoyed their flavors which included mascarpone and fig. I found their pricing to be a bit steep. The staff member was very down to earth and nice!

Google
Great service, unique tasty flavors, and a great location! Will definitely go back! Unlike many other offerings in houston, it's not super sweet. You can actually taste the flavors.

Google
We came on a rough day when only two or three flavors were left. But the flavors we got were chef’s kiss. This is quality stuff you have to eat slowly and savor. Ambiance was aesthetic, perfectly Instagrammable.

Google
The ice creams are amazing, they really are like the italian gelato. The only complaint is that the place could use some update to make it a more welcoming gelateria.

Google
I really enjoyed the gelato here, I got the salted caramel and the goat cheese with pecans, my wife got strawberry and the vanilla from Madagascar,, yum yum, very creamy and delicious, reminded me of the gelato from Italy, a little pricey but good. CJ was very friendly and promised to come to church with us. I’ll be looking for you, CJ.

Yelp
went here with friends for a quick dessert. lady at the front was super sweet - she even brought a to-go container to my friend who ordered something for his girlfriend (not sure why he did that in the first place LOL, but that's besides the point) flavor-wise, gelato was super decadent but not overwhelming. very smooth and nice you get up to 3 flavors in a single container.

Yelp
Their namesake flavor was really a hit . Creamy custard gelato , not too eggy with the right amount of zing from the lemon . Their coffee flavor was nice and not too bold yet still rich and addictive . I found myself licking the bottom of the cup which is a good sign . Only wish they had a tiramisu or hazelnut offering as that's always been my favorite gelato flavor . I also was really fortunate to get a sample of the matcha mascarpone flavor as I was heading out and that flavor is to die for! Anything that can make something as dull as matcha stand out , deserves some praise. Dolce Neve is walking distance to Pinkertons and serves as a great way to cap off a gluttonous meal .

Yelp
This cute little Italian gelato place is cozy without much seating, but that sorta adds to its charm. I appreciated there was no limit to how many flavors we sampled before committing. They have classic flavors like stracciatella and hazelnut, plus some interesting ones like lemon zest and what they call 100% chocolate. The person working there was really patient and friendly, especially with my friend's kids while they chose a flavor. I went for the pistachio, which was super green. Suspiciously green. The base cream was pretty good, though. Honestly, I was hoping for some more unique, out-there flavors. But I know sometimes you just want a straightforward scoop of gelato, and Dolce Neve delivers on that front. It's a solid choice if you're in the mood for some Italian-style frozen treats. Not mind-blowing, but definitely satisfying. If they mixed up their flavor lineup a bit more, I'd be more excited to go back.

Yelp
We've been here a couple times and have never had a bad scoop. Although this will probably be not up to par to a legit gelateria in Italy, this Texas based shop is one of the better gelato spots in Houston. I seem to always get their pistachio and straciatella every time I'm here, but they have a good variety of flavors you can try. They also have sorbets and popsicles available if you're feeling something other than gelato. Located in a strip, parking is a non issue here. Service is always friendly and the shop has a very homey, non fancy, laid back vibe. They have some seating inside and a couple outside as well. I left out a star because I think there's a shop or two in town that has better gelato but overall this spot is pretty solid. Come swing by and check them out!

Yelp
We arrived 10 minutes before closing, but the employee was very nice and served us! He was patient with letting us try multiple flavors. The inside is clean, and there is lots of seating! We got the $7 medium size with 3 flavors: coffee, mascarpone and figs, and cream dolce Neve (custard with lemon zest). All the flavors were creamy and so delightful! By combining the coffee and the mascarpone flavor, it was basically like tiramisu! I appreciated how the lemon zest had a strong lemon flavor.

Yelp
A small place with a relaxed atmosphere to enjoy ice cream. Every day they have different flavors. I loved that they have vegan options, and the customer service was exceptional. Maya patiently explained each flavor to us and was very kind

Yelp
If you're looking for the perfect gelato, look no further, just come to Dolce Neve. This quaint little place is a haven for gelato lovers, offering an incredible variety of flavors that are as creative as they are delicious. They also offer great coffee! If you are looking for something with a little less calories :D I personally love it, and I happily recommend it.

Yelp
I am SO SAD they had this vanilla ice cream with olive oil and sea salt as a limited edition item and it was the best ice cream I've ever had....and now it's gone :( Since my favorite flavor is gone, I also like - Stracciatella - Madagascar vanilla - Chocolate (has a longer name, I forget) - Dolce neve (it's their specialty!) We've been back a few times and it's a good go-to for dessert after dinner. They're also open pretty late and have friendly service :) Big fan!

Yelp
Best in Town. We are italian, we know what we are talking about. Fresh and real ingredients.

Yelp
Came here for a scoop after dinner in the heights. They have a rotating assortment of gelato flavors and all the ones we sampled were great. Authentic gelato experience.

Yelp
The best gelato in Houston. I think the owners might have taken my previous feedback seriously, which is great news. I've been to Dolce Neve twice since my last review and the improvements have been noticeable. The last time around (7/21) the front fridge was back in service, the place was sparkling clean again and the lady at the counter was even going outside to clean the tables despite the place being very busy.

Yelp
Thank you for the exceptional service, CJ!! We came in a big group of 10 and were lucky to have someone who accommodated and served us so well. I would 10/10 come again because not only was the gelato delicious, but we also had a good time hanging out there.

Yelp
I was wanting to enjoy this experience more, but I found the overall flavors coupled with cost to not stack up. I ordered their medium, which allowed me to get up to 3 flavors, and it came out close to $8...just feels steep. For the flavors I tried the namesake Dolce Neve, the Madagascar Vanilla, and the Malted Milk. All of the flavors were good, nothing really stood out minus the Dolce Neve. As I came by on a Wednesday afternoon, there was no one else in the shop so it was an easy ordering experience.

Yelp
A waiter slipped us the clue that this was IT when it comes to gelato... and he was RIGHT!! I can't think of a place that even slightly comes close to how tasty the gelatos are here. Fromage Blac + Berries | 8.3/10 Yes, Fromage = cheese, but hold the phone - it ain't your aunt Sally's cheese.. it's sweet, sweet, European cheese *chef's kiss* it tastes much more like a slightly honey & rich, creamy combination surrounding various berries. Very well balanced! Hazelnut Gelato in a Waffle Cone| 9.85/10 Wow.. this literally tastes like Ferrero Rocher! Without a doubt! & the cone... fantastic. It has a slight cinnamon taste! We WILL be back!!
google avatar

Stephanie J.

Yelp
Nice staff will let you sample plenty of flavors until you find your favorite .. Creamy Gelato with a variety of flavors. I liked the ricotta honey pistachio & tiramisu
google avatar

Yelp
Tucked away in a shopping mall, the customer service was helpful and friendly! Several flavors, the gelato isn't overly sweet and processed. Tasted very clean and high quality. There are some seating inside as well.
google avatar

Derrick A.

Yelp
The actual ice cream is decent-to-good, depending on the flavor. But the service we've received on multiple occasions from the young man with the mustache working the counter is one of the worst experiences I've had, and I go out to eat pretty much every day. Rarely do I get such a negative and toxic vibe from an employee.
google avatar

Jeannie W.

Yelp
Cute place, friendly and helpful staff. This place offered a variety of not your typical flavors. They had blueberry lemon sorbet, marscapone and a flavor with ghost cheese in it, salted caramel, 70% chocolate. Waffle cones were yummy yet not too big. For the small cup you can choose up to 2 flavors. I had a sweet cream with chocolate chips and salted caramel, both were yum. They even ask you which flavor you want on top if you choose more than 1 flavor. Would definitely return and try other flavors. Ordered 2 salted caramel ice cream sandwiches to go so there's something to look forward to later yum

Yelp
Very creamy gelato! But not cheap. Small cup $5.95 - can get 2 flavors. Chose organic hazelnut and coffee. Very good. Hazelnut reminded me of a ferrero rocher, and the coffee had a strong coffee taste. If it was a full scoop, it may have been too much, but the bf and I shared a small cup after dinner. Waffle cone $1.97. We usually get a cone, but I wasn't that hungry, and it's kinda pricey. Didn't care for the apricot sorbet sample. They have rotating flavors. I've had the goat cheese & pecan in Austin before, which I liked. I've been to a couple locations in Austin, but I didn't recognize any of those flavors on the board here today besides the goat cheese & pecan. Small parking lot so that would probably prevent me from coming in the future, tbh. Additional parking is 2 blocks away.

Yelp
Dolce Neve is by far my favorite gelato shop and one of the only few in the Heights area! While they change up their flavors I really like their staple chocolate flavor such as Chocolate 100% from Ghana. While seating is limited to outdoor seating which is super limited, service is always a breeze for a quick cooling treat!

Firoz C.

Yelp
Fab gelato, authentic & artisanal. The flavors were on point. Chocolate was rich in flavor, the Pistachio was amazing, natural in taste and flavor, not dyed overtly green. Just like I had in Italy

Yelp
We came here at 8 pm on a Friday night two hours before close. They had sold out of a couple of flavors from an already limited menu. I consider myself a gelato traditionalist when it comes to flavors and I was disappointed they didnt have nocciola (hazelnut), lampone (raspberry) or fragiola (strawberry) on the day I visited. Given that, I had a small cup of half chocolate 70% and half vanilla. The vanilla was excellent, creamy smooth texture and had vanilla bean specs. Chocolate was too bitter and rich for my taste. The stracciatella frozen bar tasted like nothing; the gelato itself was bland and the chocolate coating tasted like plastic. Perhaps it had been sitting in the freezer too long and I would not order this again. Maybe the flavors are more for adventurous types but I found the menu far too hipster and "out there" for me. For example, there were two flavors with butternut squash and one with sweet potato, among others. I do not ever want to see vegetables in my gelato, otherwise Id just eat Thanksgiving dinner. They may be creative but if you want old school gelato flavors head to Amorino. Overall I feel it is overhyped and would not go out of my way to visit again because 1) the menu is too limited and 2) the location is sketchy as hell at night and made me very uncomfortable.

Yelp
Absolutely my new favorite place!! This place had amazing homemade gelato with each flavor blowing me away. Even better was the super awesome worker who was kind and funny. I will be recommending this place to everyone I know and returning!!

Yelp
Had the chocolate with candied orange peels, blueberry and creme something? They were all delicious. I've been a long time choco-orange lover and it's been a while since I had one thwt tastes this good. Service was great and ambiance is pretty nice. Would come back in the future

Yelp
Perfect spot for gelato in the Heights! I got Salted Caramel and Stracciatella, both were delicious. Ample parking, it wasn't too busy on a weekday evening and the staff was very helpful in making recommendations!

Yelp
Customer service: - I walked in while she was eating her lunch. Felt kinda bad about that. Masked were enforced. Not allowed to taste test, I'm assuming bc of COVID. Doesn't take cash, card only. Customer service was nothing spectacular. Might have walked in at the wrong time? Ambiance: No seating, no music. Nothing really going on. Food: - mascarpone matcha: I got a small cup. It was around $6 which makes sense if it's gelato. It was amazing, really flavorful and what I expected it to taste. It was a good combination of matcha and mascarpone fusion, well balanced between the two flavors. Overall: Aside from the good suggestion and the flavorful gelato, nothing else was really going for me, or enough to comment. Understandable due to the circumstances. I wish taste testing was allowed since I am paying for it. Had I not liked it, it would have really sucked!
google avatar

Yelp
Boutique gelato at its best!! Small and quaint with nice service.. little or wit but it is boutique gelato so you get what you pay for... will go back

Yelp
Neve gonna give you up Neve gonna let you down And let me down is exactly what they did. Big Time. To be honest I was fully expecting it. Because most gelato shops in the US are not actually gelato, and although some of them are still pretty good, the majority of them are disappointing. Disappointing doesn't come close with this one. I met the owner and he's from Italy and he seems like the real deal. But it's absolutely nothing like anything I had in Italy. A million miles away. And I probably tried a couple of hundred gelato shops in Italy in my lifetime. I can't give it less than three because he's a good guy and the girl employee was lovely to me, and because I won't rate family businesses lower than three except in extraordinary circumstances. And the fact that it's completely different doesn't actually make it bad. It just so happens that I did not like the taste or texture of any of the flavors I tried. They were very hipstery but that wasn't the reason they were bad either. At best a couple of them were mediocre. The majority of them I didn't even want to eat. We threw the majority of our portion away. Now I get that a lot of cool and hip people live in the Heights, and will love this gelato shop because it's on their doorstep, in their nabe, made by an Italian guy, and it's expensive and it's fancy. But it takes a lot more than that to impress me. Some people think I give out 5 star ratings for fun but in fact it just so happens if there are a lot of good places out there and I know how to pick them. In this case I picked wrong or rather Yelp steered me wrong. So keep those 5 Star reviews rolling in, sure, but for those who actually like real Italian gelato and who have high standards, I would be surprised if you were as impressed by this as the majority of the gelato-starved Houston yelpers. By the way check out Gelato at Frozen Cafe and Gelato Cup in Chinatown. Makes this place taste like the pavement. But maybe you like to lick pavements. I sometimes do. ;)

Yelp
Pistachio and Chocolate with candy orange are heavenly!! Love pineapple and blood orange sorbet, too!

Yelp
I went to Dolce Neve on a Friday night after dinner. We heard it was a brand new gelato place in the Heights area, and they just came from Austin, Texas. When we got there, it was very busy, and there were no areas to sit. It's a small ice cream shop with minimal seating, but they also have some patio seating. We were offered to try some samples before we settled on our gelato choices. They were all pretty amazing, but I ended up going for a small cup which included two scoops of ice cream for $4.16. I went with the Vanilla from Madagascar and the Organic Hazelnut. These were both so delicious. The organic hazelnut flavor tasted like Ferrero Rocher chocolate if you're into that. Overall, I enjoyed the gelato here. The flavors were really amazing, and I like that they have a private parking lot. Their gelato is a little pricey, but it's okay once in a while. We'll definitely be coming back.

Yelp
A hot new business indeed! Or should I say cold?! This gelato gem opened just a month ago in The Heights. The owner, Marco Silvestrini, runs the Houston location, while his sister and sister's fiance run the shop in Austin on South 1st. I haven't been to Austin in a while, but I'm grateful that this authentic gelato shop opened up here in Houston, too. The owners are from Italy and actually studied the art of making gelato, so you know it's legit. My friend and I had been wanting to try this spot for a few weeks now, and we were so glad to come in on a late Monday afternoon. There was only one customer before us. Marco was so kind enough to let us try a spoonful of whatever flavours we wanted, explained how they infuse the flavours, and gave suggestions on combinations. To be honest, I wanted all the flavours! These are the ones I tried: Buttermilk + Strawberry: The buttermilk makes it creamy, and the strawberry bursts flavour that tastes like it was fresh picked from Froberg's Farm or something similar. Goat Cheese Pecan: If you like goat cheese and nuts (like me. lol.), you'll love this combination. I've had goat cheese vanilla ice cream before in a dessert I tried in Philly a few months ago, but I couldn't taste the goat cheese. This gelato, however, won't disappoint. You can taste the goat cheese just enough to where it doesn't overpower, and there are chunks of pecans in it. Mascarpone with Coffee Infusion: I was expecting to taste a bit of tartness from the mascarpone, but it tasted more like coffee. Still good, though. Dolce Neve (Custard with Lemon Zest): If you're into citrus desserts like key lime, you'll love the lemon zest flavour. It's light and refreshing. Organic Pistachio: I love pistachio. It's always my go-to. There aren't any pistachio pieces in this, but the pistachio is very nutty. Haha. It would be even better with pistachio pieces. I decided on the Buttermilk + Strawberry and Goat Cheese Pecan combo that Marco suggested. It does pair nicely together. My friend also tried the Matcha Green Tea, and she liked it. So, you can't go wrong with any of the flavours. If you're looking for something dairy-free, they also have at least one sorbet. Marco said the flavours change every now and then, so I will definitely be back to try more...maybe even a gelato sandwich or gelato stick. P.S. Marco says the weekends are busy, so if you don't want to wait in line or hate crowds, come in on a weekday and hit them up for a sweet treat during your lunch break.

Yelp
I was so excited when I heard my all time favorite gelato shop was coming to Houston and finally it's here and it does not disappoint! No matter how short my trip to Austin, I always had to make a stop here for some gelato. They have all sorts of specialty flavors, some that you wouldn't expect like mascarpone and figs or chamomile pistachio crumble and then regular flavors like Madagascar vanilla and they're all delicious! My favorites from today were the two mentioned above. It's light and creamy and where I usually can't finish a whole cup of ice cream on my own I can finish one here and more. One other favorite of mine is their affogato where you get espresso and two scoops of your choice of gelato. Another thing that I like about this place is how they don't make you feel uncomfortable for wanting to try different flavors. Especially since theirs are so unique. Overall I highly recommend Dolce Neve and will definitely be a frequent visitor! **update: been here 3 times since opening and I highly recommend the homemade waffle cone and these flavors Fromage blanc w apricot jam Giadova(?): hazelnut and chocolate Ricotta pistachio Strawberry sorbet

Yelp
Excellent!! Today I was in the mood for some ice cream but not just any ordinary ice cream, so I thought I would try this new gelato place. I got a scoop of the chocolate, salted caramel, and mancha green tea flavors in a waffle cone. It was so delicious!! The chocolate tasted like a brownie, The Salted Caramel was perfect, and the mancha green tea was so refreshing. I will definitely be back with my family and friends. The owner, he helped me today. I was indecisive about what flavor to choose and he gave me great recommendations and also explained what ingredients were used to make the flavor combinations. They have flavors like wiskey pecan, and so many others. Its really great, I definitely say give them a try!

Yelp
Coffee was lacking, pistachio is a must get, service was okay. We sat outside because of the beautiful weather, tables were clean.

Yelp
What a freaking dream. I was so busy eating my gelato, I couldn't even articulate how happy my taste buds were. Ugh, it's so so so so damn good. I don't know what else to say other than the fact that it's life changing good. This is by far my favorite ice cream/gelato place in Houston. I probably sampled like 5 flavors and all of them were great. Top 3: chocolate sea salt, organic pistachio and matcha mascarpone. Only complaint is the scoops are soooo small and it's a bit pricy but then again, this isn't marble slab.
google avatar

A K.

Yelp
If you mix melon sorbet, salted caramel, and stracciatella, it's delicious! (That's according to my 8 year old) for me, I thought salted caramel plus stracciatella was amazing!)
google avatar

Audrey G.

Yelp
The price is honestly laughable. It shouldn't even be half. Unfortunately taste is irrelevant, and overshadowed by $9 for a scoop.
google avatar

Cathay W.

Yelp
Definitely my favorite gelato place in town! The store is bright and cheery with big windows and optimistic yellow decor. I like that the staff is very friendly and welcoming. They let you try all the flavors, no pressure. I think I've tried pretty much all of them, but my favorites are stracciatella (vanilla with chocolate chips), crema dolce neve (custard with a lemony twist), chocolate with candied orange, and tiramisu. The rest of the flavors are also really good. I haven't had a bad flavor. I usually don't like cheese that much so I was surprised that I liked some of their cheesy flavors, too. The cones are great and have never tasted stale. They make them in house and sometimes the whole store smells like cones, yaaaaasss. They also sell sandwiches (I think the chocolate cookie is better than the regular), popsicles, t-shirts, coffee, and topo chico. I usually just eat my ice cream there but I've seen several customers take their ice cream to go, whether it's a pint or just one scoop. I wish they had WiFi and a dog bowl for water outside. Speaking of water, I kind of wish they also had like berry water or lemon water to cleanse the palate. Overall, I like the gelato better than that other place in the heights, and the flavors are more comforting than that other place in rice village (although that's comparing gelato to ice cream so maybe that's not fair).
google avatar

Kbob K.

Yelp
Very attentive counter person. Gave advice and give us samples. The gelato is so very good. Flavors are spot on and the experience is nice. We will be coming back and would highly recommend.

A A.

Yelp
Too much heavy cream and sugar in the gelato recipes, especially given the hefty prices
google avatar

Janice J.

Yelp
The best, most authentic cup of gelato you're going to get in Texas! Flavors rotate daily and some flavors are seasonal (especially the fruit sorbets), but you can be assured only the highest quality ingredients go into the making of the gelato here. Definitely been a long term fan of Dolce since they first opened in Austin. Some of my favorite flavors (so hard to choose because they're all so good): Any and all the nut flavors (they roast and grind their own nuts into a paste to make these and you can taste the difference) -- especially the hazelnut and pistachio Ricotta, honey, pistachio Matcha tea Earl Grey tea Crema Dolce Neve (egg custard with lemon zest) Buttermilk Strawberry All the sorbets Honestly you can't go wrong with anything here though and I know a lot of people love the salted caramel and the dark chocolate flavors but definitely feel free to ask for samples!! Oh, and the waffle cones are made in house and are amazing.
google avatar

Yelp
Very tasty gelato place. Best in Houston I've tried so far. True to Italian Gelato. Creamy and the quality of the ingredient makes he difference. We would definitely recommend and go back again. You can even get some portion to go :) in case of midnight gelato craving :)

Yelp
Really good gelato and is extremely comparable to gelato I had when I was in Italy. I had the Matcha & Marscapone and it was the perfect blend of matcha without being overly sweet

Perla M.

Yelp
Best gelato I've had period! I was NOT expecting it to be this good. I got the fig and the goat cheese and OMG it was incredible!! The flavors were impeccable and it's not too sweet. I hate overly sweet and the artificial taste and this gelato DELIVERED for sure! Service was also super great. They offered me samples with a great attitude & did great in describing the flavors and giving recommendations.

Yelp
Best gelato in Houston! Easy to get to from the Heights - also access from Memorial drive or I45. Next to the Hughies restaurant and plenty of parking. We are regulars and there's always fun new flavors to try. We love the waffle cone with 3 flavors. Today we got the little cup with 2 flavors. I love the Matcha tea flavor and the owner recommended pairing it with pistachio and it was amazing!! Highly recommended!!

Yelp
Had a pleasant first visit here. The worker behind the counter was super nice and explained all the flavors as we tried a couple. I chose pistachio and stracciatella which were really good. The place is kind of small inside but quaint. It really felt like I was somewhere in Europe because the worker was from there as well as the only other people at the table next to ours who were from France. They make all flavors in house and we enjoyed the creamy gelato. I liked pistachio a lot because the flavor was deep and reminded me of all the gelato I had in italy!
