"“I’d be stupid-happy to have a Donburi in my ’hood.” That’s what Washington Post food critic Tim Carman says of the Japanese restaurant in Adams Morgan that recently opened a second location on 19th Street NW. The namesake dish is a must-order for him. 'There is something inexplicably homey about these rice bowls, and they don’t even have to be topped with tonkotsu, those panko-flaked lengths of pork,' he said." - Adele Chapin

Places like these are so hard to come by. Good portions, fast service, fresh & authentic donburi. I wish Richmond had a place this great. Definitely will be eating here every time I come to visit DC from now on!

📍 Donburi - A Quick & Satisfying Japanese Meal 🍚 This is a Japanese donburi (rice bowl) spot run by Koreans. The menu isn’t extensive—just a few rice bowls—but it’s perfect for a quick and simple meal. Though basic, it’s quite satisfying! ✅ 🍱 Recommended: Donburi Moriwase - $22 This combo includes three types of toppings: 🐟 Sashimi 🍗 Fried Chicken 🐟 Unagi (Grilled Eel) You get a bit of everything, plus an egg—pretty filling! 🥚✨ 📌 Pro tip: Be sure to grab extra soy sauce packets! The vinegar rice was a bit too mild for my taste. 🍶 ⚠️ Skip the Fried Chicken! Tried their fried chicken, and it wasn’t great. Wouldn’t recommend ordering it. 😅 Overall, a decent spot for donburi in Flushing! If you’re looking for something quick and easy, it does the job. 🍚👌

Google
Delicious Japanese rice-bowl dish (Donburi). We got the Donburi Moriwase, and our little nephew got the tonkatsu with curry. I can tell they use very fresh oil to make the dish. Also the rice they used is perfectly seasoned and cooked. Our little nephew approved, the food is awesome. This place has gone through renovation, so they offer more seating area on the 2nd floor. You order the food through a kiosk on the first floor. The food comes out fairly quickly. The staff are very friendly.

Google
Food is amazing. It is a little pricey for a self-service restaurant, but that's made up for by the quality of food and serving size. My only complaint is that the tables were sticky

I’ve noticed some reviewers did not like the self-service food order device. I had no qualms with it, in fact I liked the idea of taking my time ordering the food I wanted. Everything on the menu was delicious. When the food was ready, we picked up the meals ourselves which makes me wonder why I even tipped them 18%. Overall it was worth it and I would go back if I was living in DC.

Google
Fantastic spot for a casual weekday meal! I first visited Donburi for a quick mid-workday lunch with a friend whose office is conveniently two blocks away. They have a pretty streamlined process -- you can browse the menu and order from one of two kiosks next to the entrance, and then grab a buzzer as you take a seat on their spacious second floor. The seating is pretty simple, exactly what I would expect from a casual eatery, and there's plenty of natural lighting during the daytime. The food arrived quite quickly, and was delicious. I got the ebi katsu curry, and he ordered the pork katsu curry. The curry was rich and hearty, and the katsu were both perfectly fried, with a delightfully crispy shell protecting the tender shrimp / pork inside. It was all served over a generous helping of rice, and I loved the refreshing pops of acid from the pickled radish to help contrast the heaviness of the rest of the dish. It was truly comfort in a bowl -- can't wait to visit again!

Curry was good but karaage was a bit salty for me. You can enjoy free tap water by yourself.

Google
The food is really fresh. Chicken: crispy on the outside and tender on the inside. Little bit salty but reasonable. Some of them were tough. But they are still great! Shrimp: I have one. Great! Anago & salmon: If you may try those as separate dish, I don't recommend to do it. The taste of those are not deep, and you may feel greasy (but it's not so bad). But when those things come together, they are well collaborated with each other. Weak flavor of anago and salmon makes me comfortable. I don't need to drink water while I am eating. Really nice. When the rice remained without toppings, try it with wasabi and pickled radish (without ginger). It will be great. But I don't recommend you to take out this.

Yelp
If this had a floor level storefront in a more visible area, it would be consistently packed because of how excellent it is. The katsu pork was thick, not over fried or dry but perfectly moist with the crunchy panko coating that was freshly fried. It's served in a bowl with lots of fresh white sushi rice and japanese curry. The curry was a little salty for me, but still tasty. I ordered the side salad that is described as "small", but it was actually a pretty sizable salad, more medium size. The servings are huge, and I think the price is a great deal for this area. Seating is on the second floor, everything was clean and organized. I hope they consider offering a half katsu half salad option, as the full size bowl with their salad was too much to eat in one sitting. Delicious, and will return!

Yelp
I'd say that the environment around here is quite dim and casual, and while picking up my food that I ordered online, I noticed that they have a kiosk that you can place your order in and get a buzzer to call out your order. Service is fast, and I got the Donburi Moriwase that has eel, salmon, ebi, and karaage. I'd say that my meal is warm when I got it, though the fish that I had is okay, not nearly as fresh as I'd hope, but the taste is fine. The rice has some stale taste to it that I don't really like, and the eel doesn't taste as juicy as other stores you find in DC that serves donburi. Nice if you are around the area, but I wouldn't go out in lengths just for their donburi. Overall, food is 6/10, and no comment regarding the service, since it's a takeout order.

Clara S.

Yelp
Solid donburi place in DC! The sakedon was really really good-- they didn't skimp out on the salmon sashimi and the rice was seasoned perfectly. Service was fast and ambiance was very casual-- good to go with friends!

Roy A.

Yelp
Who would've thought a great little spot was above a vape shop? Once you go upstairs, you're greeted by a modern ordering system with digital screens. Easy to use and quick! The atmosphere upstairs is cozy and inviting, perfect for a relaxed lunch. The Christmas tunes added a festive touch. You pickup food at the counter when it's ready. The food was the real star of the show. The fried dishes were crispy and flavorful, just how I like them. Overall, a pleasant dining experience. Definitely recommend checking this place out!

Ashley Z.

Yelp
Had lunch here during a short stay in DC and I'm so sad there isn't a place like Donburi in NYC!! I ordered the Sakedon and it was an incredible lunch. It came with nine luscious pieces of salmon sashimi over a bed of nicely seasoned sushi rice and a side of wasabi, ginger, and pickles. I ordered off the kiosk and found a seat upstairs, and my food was ready for pickup right away. I was very pleased with the quality and taste of this meal, it was a perfectly light solo lunch. If I lived in DC, I'd be eating at Donburi all the time!

Marna S.

Yelp
Had the mixed Katsudon curry bowl and it was delicious. 3 crispy tender juicy chicken pieces and 2 very light airy crispy shrimps over rice with takuan Dijon pickles. Curry flavor was tasty and great portion. Appreciate the place was kept clean as well. I would come back.

Nica F.

Yelp
Literally my favorite place for comfort food at a very decent price (in my opinion)! There is literally nothing better than their Katsu Curry!!! There's nothing better to me than a bowl of fresh hot white rice, curry, and a crispy fried pork loin. It's my GO TO MEAL, I can NEVER get sick of this. Then the Karaage, Salmon Sashimi, and Ebi Katsu???? Chef's kiss!!!! All of these together just make such a delicious experience. I usually order online for pick up or delivery order via DoorDash and it's still perfect! And the packaging is efficient and always keeps the food warm.

Elizabeth M.

Yelp
Casual restaurant for delicious Japanese rice bowls... you order via the machines then get a device from the chefs for when your order is ready then go upstairs for dining/waiting. The restaurant is very clean and the staff are super friendly. I wasn't feeling well and couldn't do raw fish so I got a bowl of Butadon - Pork over rice topped with soy sauce, spring onions, sesame seeds, kimchi onions and wasabi, served with a small salad. It was all really delicious and filling. I would go back again.

Alex M.

Yelp
(Moriwase Donburi: A) - I ordered takeout for this Donburi and was quite impressed by the variety, amount of content, and the good execution for each component of this bowl. The chicken was well seasoned and the mentaiko sauce adds some good color and sweetness to contrast the saltiness. The textured crispiness of the shrimp worked well to add some variation in texture. The eel was large and soft and the salmon had some beautiful marbling as well. In addition, there was some wasabi that seemed to be a mix of the root and horseradish as well as some pickled vegetable to provide some much needed contrast to the fried food. Very great execution overall. Highly recommend. Food: +1 Presentation: E Price: +1 Overall: +2 A Insta/Beli: @amei_eats

Angela P.

Yelp
pros: -quick service after ordering on the 2 touch screens -lots of seating available -we ordered the curry mix katsudon and it was so good! -the curry sauce was perfect, not too salty cons: -wish the chicken karaage was less dry and that the shrimp wasn't so small

Karyn S.

Yelp
Nice little fresh, fast restaurant. You can order to go or sit in the small restaurant. I went during an odd time, so my food came out quickly. I ordered the shrimp and chicken in Donburi. I wasn't expecting the mayonnaise based sauce and fried food so it was heavier than I anticipated. Overall, it was a good quick dinner for this out of state traveler. It was nice to get a little Japanese comfort food!

Ailun H.

Yelp
If you're looking for a quick and comforting meal in Dupont, Donburi is a solid choice. You can order at the kiosk and pick up a buzzer. Once the buzzer rings, you can head over to the counter to pick up your food. Pretty fast and perfect for mid-workday lunches. SAKEDON - 16.95 Each order comes with 9 pieces of salmon sashimi (a good amount of fat on each piece, too!), wasabi, ginger, pickled cucumbers and daikon with rice (mixed with furikake and soy sauce). It was definitely a very comforting and homey option, but I felt like there wasn't much salmon for the amount of rice given. The salmon was tasty and fresh. The rice was OK, as the furikake and soy sauce had an uneven distribution. After finishing all the food, I wasn't too full, unfortunately. The portions here are pretty small in general, and this is coming from someone who doesn't eat a whole lot. You'll be looking to spend around $20 after tax and tip if you just order a bowl. My friend got a curry katsudon that looked pretty good which she enjoyed.

Daniel H.

Yelp
Curry Katsudon ($15.95) 7.5/10 The katsu was fried very well. Very good crispiness on the outside and a good thickness to the katsu. The curry has a bit of spice to it, and paired well with the katsu and rice. This includes a mayo sauce on the side with roe in it (did not use it). I think the dish could use another flavor aside from the pickled vegetables. Self serve kiosk, beeper to grab food. second floor for dine-in seating

Ellie N.

Yelp
Very happy with my order! I ordered to go and it hit the spot when i didn't know what I was craving. After finishing a bowl I wish there was miso soup, would've been a good touch to end the meal

Jd H.

Yelp
Donburi has steadily gone downhill over the years, and my last 3 visits over the past 4 months confirms for me that it's nowhere near the quality it had when it was out in Adams Morgan. The karaage is way over cooked and dry, the rice in the donburi is soggy and much smaller in quantity, and certain things like their egg and curry are really salty. On the positive side, their ebi is still being fried well and the sashimi is still good, albeit noticeably smaller portions. This location stopped providing barely tea at some point, which is a shame. The free water they do provide tastes off. There's absolutely no service when you dine in, yet they ask for 20% tip when you check out. If you're hankering for Japanese food, I'd recommend trying somewhere else. Donburi is just not worth the price anymore.

Tatiana W.

Yelp
Really tasty quick service menu! I was worried that the portions would be small based on the photos, but I felt full for a decent price! The building itself was very aesthetic, and I appreciated the quality of the food. I would definitely consider going back.

Huangrui C.

Yelp
nice food and nice environment. It is like fast food service we can get our own spoons and chopsticks. Strongly recommend the curry, I really like the poke curry.

Wendy D.

Yelp
Delicious, quick and easy! I got the donburi moriwase which includes a myriad of toppings. The salmon was fresh, the eel was well marinated, and the shrimp tempura was tender. The only thing I didn't like was the Karaage which was a little tough and dry. Otherwise the seasoned rice is great! You order via self serve, can choose bar seating or table seating upstairs, and can serve yourself water as well. Super chill place for some good food.

rich c.

Yelp
It's been a while since I came to this place. Food was great. Service was quick although it was an evening during the holidays and during the week. Ambiance - well decorated and maintained although... the tables are a little sticky.

Jenny K.

Yelp
This is a cozy place that's good for eating alone. First floor is the kitchen, second floor is dining area, and third floor seems to be storage. You order the food on the machine for dine in or take out, and they will bring the food to you if you are dining in. I've had Donburi moriwase (combination) and salad with sesame dressing on the side. It went well together, the only down side was kaarage (fried chicken) was a bit dry.

Jenny T.

Yelp
Solid spot, order at the machine, get buzzed down to grab your food. Very casual, I liked the quiet seating upstairs with windows. Curry was pretty good. The mixed bowl was okay - the best part was the eel so if I came back I'd get curry or an unagi-don. Salmon sashimi was fine, chicken karaage was too dry and hard. The ebi/ fried shrimp was good too, batter was night and light. Rice was seasoned well and I crushed all of it.

Anne-Olive N.

Yelp
I've passed by this place multiple times over the past a couple of years and finally decided to try it for work lunch this week. I ordered the mix katsudon to go with a side of donburi sauce. I got my order to go and the process was efficient and smooth with accurate timing for pickup. I was running 15 minutes behind, but thankfully my food was still hot at pickup. The portion was a nice size for lunch with a nice amount of flavor and sauce. I would have enjoyed more shrimp and rice to balance the amount of sauce but overall this a solid lunch option!

James H.

Yelp
Pretty good spot in DC. My first time trying this place out so I was mostly just wanting to see what all they had to offer. They had a bunch of great looking rice bowls, so I ordered one of their signature bowls. Ordering system was done through kiosk with seating on the second floor. Very minimalistic interior and self service so definitely somewhere where you might dine in privacy and not much interaction. I ordered the Donburi Moriwase bowl. The bowl was a good portion size to fill me up and had a little bit of everything. I'm not picky about the textures and flavors of certain things if they all come in a bowl and have a bit of sauce, so I felt like every topping was really good. I will say prices are what would be expected given the times we live in but portion sizes could've had a bit more for what you're paying... I would definitely come here again and try another signature bowl

Jon S.

Yelp
Food was very fresh, prepared quickly, and tasty. I appreciate the recommendation I had received and I would return.

Rebecca C.

Yelp
I got the Donburi moriwase and loved it. Super crispy and light shrimp tempura, soft melty raw salmon, fried chicken, and eel. I would even go back just to get the salmon and eel bowls.

Amy P.

Yelp
Miss the original location in Adams Morgan. This place is less of a restaurant and more of a fast food location. Great for a quick fried food rice bowl but it's not very healthy. The other location used to give a tea water if you sit down. Now you order from a kiosk and everything is disposable. Also some of the condiment sauces changed and you have to ask for them separately. The service was accommodating.

Kelly N.

Yelp
Nice little restaurant, perfect for a quick bite! We tried the Mix and Ebi donburi bowl. The shrimp was perfectly crisp. The rice had a nice flavor also. Portions were great! Wish we had a place like this near Philly. Perfect comfort bowl.

Cas N.

Yelp
I love this place so much. The food is absolutely phenomenal and the flavors are rich, savory and delicious. Most of the service is self serve because you place your order at the machine, grab a pager and seat yourself but it's fine. The atmosphere is great, with a beautiful outlay, very nice music and a relaxing environment. I highly recommend.

Nolan F.

Yelp
We got: 1. Donburi Moriwase - Assorted toppings of Eel, Salmon, Ebi and Karaage. Seasoned rice. Japanese pickles. Wasabi 2. Karaage/Ebi Curry Katsudon - Japanese pickles. White rice. House made Japanese curry In the donburi Moriwase, Eel was tender and thoroughly deboned. Sashimi was fresh. Tempura shrimp and Karaage were crispy and tasty. Dipping Sauces are provided to compliment certain proteins. The consistency and flavor of the curry was on point. Combined with perfectly cooked rice, I'm really happy a specialty donburi restaurant like this exists.

Alan O.

Yelp
During a visit to DC for a conference, I was experiencing Asian food deficit, I needed my rice. Donburi looked like a good place to get my fix. I almost missed the place, it's up a flight of stairs from the street. Donburi definitely scratched the itch. I got their combo bowl (don't know what was the actual name) which had a variety of goods. The portions were quite satisfactory. Salmon sashimi did its job. The kara-age (Japanese fried chicken) was more chicken than coating, a good thing. The unagi (eel) was a bit overcooked, a bit mushy but still good flavor. The nice touches included pickled radish (takuan) and plenty of ginger. Service was very good, the meal arrived in just a few minutes. I got my itch scratched, I would make a return visit to try their curry.

David C.

Yelp
Came here after seeing countless rave reviews, and was left underwhelmed and very puzzled. Maybe I'm spoiled with endless good asian food joints where I am from, but the donburis and curry that we tried were greasy, and one dimensional. Even the salmon sashimi was very sad looking.

Maggie L.

Yelp
Yummy and fresh! Loads of different fish all in a bowl. The fried food is super hot when served and the raw fish is very fresh Service is good Wait time is short A great place!

Vivian T.

Yelp
Love this place! Getting it delivered or for pickup has only reaffirmed that love. How many times have you opened your delivery or to go bag only to find that things are missing whether it's add-ons, condiments, or utensils? I have one place that has 100% charged me then not included add-ons for more than 5 orders. Not this place! Every single time, the orders are conscientiously packed. Everything is complete and the food is packaged really well too. For example, the curry bowl has the rice and curry separated on the bottom level of the bowl then another level with the katsu protected on top until you're ready! Now my favorite order is the Donburi Moriwase (has grilled eel, chicken karaage, salmon, and pickled radish over rice. There are also sweet cucumbers sliced on top. I also enjoy the curry with katsu. Can't really go wrong with either option. The food is delicious. It is pricey though you are also getting quite a bit of good stuff with it... otherwise I would be getting it all the time! But I still get it pretty often these days. It's just really savory and satisfying. I'm definitely full after eating this! I definitely recommend this place and plan to go back again... and again and again. You should all go and help keep this place open so I can keep on eating this!

Rose L.

Yelp
I love trying different things which was why I chose the Donburi Moriwase with assorted toppings of eel, sashimi, shrimp tempura, and karaage. The shrimp tempura and karaage were perfectly crispy while the salmon and eel just melt in your mouth.

Rodion D.

Yelp
I was heading to a place I found on a map. While past by this building it caught my attention and attracted me in. I didn't regret this sudden plan change. Awesome experience and the food. With very little interaction (self service) stuff still make me feel welcome.

Carin Y.

Yelp
Great casual/quick dinner or lunch spot! If you're looking for asian comfort food that doesn't feel too heavy, this is a great place to check out. My friend and I came on a rainy day and we were pleasantly surprised. SERVICE: 4/5 - Ordering is done on a self-service kiosk, but 1 out of the 2 kiosks was broken, so it wasn't very efficient to order. The food we order was brought to us in less than 5 minutes after ordering, which was crazy fast. The store was fairly clean, but the tables and tray surfaces were all very sticky to the touch. FOOD: - Donburi Moriwase: 4.5/5 - Both me and my friend got this since it includes all toppings (salmon, eel, tempura, and karaage. It was definitely on the pricier end ($20), but we were curious and wanted to try a little bit of everything. The eel and fried items were all delicious. You could tell everything was fresh, but I didn't like how the warm rice was touching the salmon sashimi...it ended up warming up the salmon which I do not particularly enjoy. Overall, great place to get a nice comforting bowl of curry or japanese comfort food! When I go back, I think I will opt out of getting the salmon. Everything else was amazing.

Anna N.

Yelp
Door-dashed some food to my hotel and my favorite was definitely the karaage curry donburi! The salmon could have been a bit more fresh, but the meal was likely better enjoyed in house

Soojin J.

Yelp
This was my first time having this and I was happily surprised!! The chicken was amazingly tender, the curry was perfectly balanced, and it was overall a wonderful, hearty meal on a chilly night.

Angela K.

Yelp
I got the mixed curry with chicken and shrimp and it was delicious! The shrimp was juicy but the chicken was a little dry. The batter was crispy and had a nice crunch to it. The sauce was flavorful and this meal filled me up. Definitely worth it for the price and value of the meal!

Leah C.

Yelp
Tried this place out on a Friday night. No crowds or lines and very casual place. You order on a touchscreen menu when you walk in and collect food when ready at the counter. Some issues with people being able to hear their order being called as seating is a floor up from where you order. The food looks perfect when received and a really good amount for the price point. I couldn't finish it! I think it is awesome their is a Japanese curry house as you really don't see very many around for whatever reason. On the counter side of that there also wasn't anything super special with this curry. I don't think I would make a special effort to return but if happened to be around the area and hankering for curry I'd stop in

Saebin J.

Yelp
Donburi is one of my favorite places to go in DC! If you're ever craving some Japanese style donburi, this is the place to go. Their salmon is always fresh and is really good quality (if you order sakedon). The katsudon menu is really good too if you like fried food and curry. I'm always torn between mix katsudon and sakedon because I want/like both fried food AND salmon sashimi. I recently found out that Donburi Moriwase had a little bit of both salmon and fried chicken/shrimp! So Donburi Moriwase is perfect for people like me who want both!

Ching C.

Yelp
Was looking for a place to grab lunch near Secretes and I came across this place. I felt like I heard of it before and wanted to give it a try. Unfortunately, I was fairly disappointed with my bowl especially the amount of food I got. They do check for vaccination if you want to eat indoors I ordered the mixed katsudon. It only came with 2 fried shrimp tempura and 2-3 pieces of karage. The shrimp and chicken were good and they gave extra sauce on the side (spicy mayo?). The donburi sauce was too sweet for my liking. It left a cloying aftertaste. Even if you eat in-store, they serve it in a take out bowl. The bowl just felt tiny and I wasn't full after eating it. I just left feeling very dissatisfied. Didn't really see worth it in terms of flavor, size and price

Yin Y.

Yelp
Simple and enjoyable. You wouldn't go wrong w/ any bowl choice here. Took one star off because one piece of chicken, only one among them, was super super dry. Staff were very friendly and helpful.

Sibyl C.

Yelp
Great quick meal after a lot of walking all day. Sorry no photos. Everyone dug in before I could take it. We tried 4 items. All great...karaage curry don, ebi and karaage combo donburi, combo curry don and salmon donburi.

Mary Y.

Yelp
Service was very quick with 2 kiosks at the front of the store and options for dining in or take out. I chose the combo/one listed as most popular and it came with 3 pieces of karate, 2 shrimp tempura and a soft scrambled egg below them. Dining area is self seating upstairs with water. Ultimately giving it 3 stars for the price ($16) and expected flavor with nothing blowing me away. Would recommend checking out!

Abraham F.

Yelp
Great food and service. Quick and a nice vibe too. 5/5! The salmon and unagi are the best IMO.

Kaitlin T.

Yelp
This was one of my go-to places to eat when I was in Washington D.C. over the summer! It was the ultimate comfort food for me as it contained all the components that I love -- radish, Katsu, and rice! It was well-seasoned and easy to take-out or dine-in. They also had good portioning and the service was good. Would highly recommend if you're looking for a comforting rice dish.

David H.

Yelp
Love Donburi - it's been a few years but tried this newer location and it was just as good as I remembered. Great, filling donburi bowls, delicious proteins, and at a great price! Good option for lunch or dinner. We had the butadon (pork was delicious), and the combo (salmon, tempura and unagi were so good!! Karaage was ok). Side salad was good.

Christine H.

Yelp
Donburi is a solid place that is an affordable comfort food option if you need a quick meal. Today, I had the salmon roe bowl which was different than I expected. It does have a slightly fishy taste but then again, it is roe. It was slightly on the spicy side too but I thought it was refreshing. I would give it at 4.5/5 and the curry is a solid 5/5. I would back here in a heartbeat.
