The 18 Best Restaurants In Silver Lake - Los Angeles - The Infatuation

"Doto is the rare all-day restaurant that you'd actually want to spend all day at. In the morning they make better lattes than most coffee shops and some of LA’s best breakfast burritos, followed by a fantastic fried chicken sandwich and bright, snappy salads at lunch. And once dinner rolls around, the hill-gazing back patio is the perfect place for a laidback friend dinner. It’s never too crowded, bottles of sake and natural wine are reasonably priced, and all of Doto’s homey izakaya-leaning entrees—like tender oxtails in Japanese curry—are easily shareable." - sylvio martins, brant cox, cathy park

The 15 Best Breakfast Burritos In Los Angeles - Los Angeles - The Infatuation

"The bacon breakfast burrito at Doto is modest in size compared to some of the gargantuan bundles on this guide, but it makes up for it in sheer flavor. The crispy chunks of bacon are front and center in each bite, with scrambled eggs, stewed pintos, and molten oaxacan cheese oozing from the tortilla like it was a just-microwaved Hot Pocket. The tater tots buried inside add a nice crunch, and the creamy avocado-shiso salsa on the side is like Icy Hot for your tongue, cooling and spicy at the same time." - sylvio martins, garrett snyder

The Hit List: New LA Restaurants To Try Right Now - Los Angeles - The Infatuation

"They say jack of all trades, master of none, except Doto is genuinely good at everything. During the day, this laid-back Silver Lake spot is a laptop-friendly café that pampers you with table service, snap pea salads, and an incredible fried chicken sandwich dripping with spicy mayo. In the evenings, Doto’s quiet, hill-gazing patio is perfect for reconnecting with that old friend group you haven't seen since last Memorial Day. Dates play pass-the-sake and split homey dishes like tempura-battered fish and chips and smoky, crisp-edged char siu. You can make a reservation at Doto, but walk-ins are a breeze, too. If there's a situation that this reliable all-day restaurant isn't a shoo-in for, we've yet to find it." - brant cox, sylvio martins, cathy park, garrett snyder, cathy park, cathy park, cathy park, brant cox, sylvio martins, cathy park, brant cox, brant cox, sylvio martins, cathy park, brant cox, sylvio martins, brant cox, cathy park, brant cox, brant cox, sylvio martins, garrett snyder, sylvio martins, cathy park

The Best New PBrunch Restaurants in Los Angeles | Eater LA

"Chef Jared Dowling’s Doto brings California izakaya fare to the bright and breezy space is a fairly recent (and solid) neighborhood addition after Jewel’s closure. It’s an all-day affair, though breakfast is available daily. Try the mushroom breakfast burrito with charro beans and Oaxacan cheese, a bacon breakfast burrito with tater tots and scallions, a patty melt with egg and beef patty with Mammoth Bakery milk bread, and a Spanish-style tortilla with togarashi aioli." - Mona Holmes

What a gem of a restaurant! Such a cute little place with darling decor and a relaxed comfortable vibe. Best part is that the food is simply divine. Fresh creative, and oh so tasty! Every dish was a work of culinary art. Bravo to the owners and staff for your friendly rapport and awesome attitude. Doto is a definite Go-To! Highest recommendation!

Google
Had the salmon bento for lunch. Portion size was pretty small for a $30 lunch, but salmon was cooked perfectly med-rare. Salad and pickles were good. Rice was a little mushy, and salmon was way (almost not) seasoned. It came in a very tasty broth, but there was so little of it that it lasted only a couple bites. Also the patio is nice but you will be swarmed by large houseflies. It was not enjoyable to eat out there.

Google
Food was pretty good. I liked the asparagus a lot. Chicken and burger was good too. Their outdoor space was nice although it was still sunny and hot!

Andy Liang

Google
It feels like the best kept secret in LA. The staff and kitchen is confident. The vibe is so easygoing. It’s refreshing to see a place so proud of its craft. Like they’re seasoned veterans

Google
Great neighborhood restaurant with friendly staff and very tasty food and drink. Very casual like the restaurant prior to Doto. It's great having a place like this so close. Everything seems to be done with care and we'll thought out. Happy hour is a great deal as well.

Google
What an absolute gem. Food is delicious and service is top notch. There’s a beautiful patio to sit on. Really a breath of fresh air in the crowded LA food scene. Try the asparagus and the oxtail curry. You won’t regret it!

Google
Incredible food and wonderful staff! The happy hour wine is so delicious. Worth a visit for breakfast, lunch or dinner.

Google
The food was savory, packed with umami, and well presented, with very friendly staff and a charming atmosphere. That said, I agree with the other reviewers, the price to portion size ratio is just off. And that’s coming from someone who’s used to LA prices. One example is the bluefin tuna sashimi: wow was it tasty, but at $18, be sure to savor every bite of the four small squares of fish. The pork katsu sandwich had a great texture with soft white bread and crispy pork, though I do think the bbq sauce is a bit too sweet, the overall effect on flavor profile was similar to eating a doughnut (weird but true). The skirt steak skewer had great salty and smoky flavor. The drinks are more comparatively priced to the region, and I recommend the pink moon martini which was lovely and floral.

Yelp
My friend and i visited doto for dinner and at night time they have lovely ambiance - killer playlist and darling outdoor patio - that was matched with the superb help of our server Adri. She mapped out everything we needed to order for a perfect dinner course plus matched us with an excellent wine (we ended up getting a bottle). She even navigated us to the best dessert we could've hoped for. They're open for breakfast and lunch so I'll definitely be back at their other opening hours. Everything we got id recommend: Crudo Cucumber dish Mushroom dish Burger & fries Devils cake donut

Yelp
The interior is clean, the patio is nicely decorated with hanging blue umbrellas, and there is plenty of free street parking. We had 2pm reservations on a Saturday and were surprised to find it so busy. Got seated right away, but unfortunately at a patio table tucked in the corner at the end of the exit walkway with minimal shade. Service is where things fell apart. We ordered 1 app and 2 entrées, one with fries. The appetizer came quickly, but then we waited about 45 minutes with no updates or check-ins while other tables that arrived after us got their food. I had to go inside to find our waitress to ask. One entrée finally came out, which we finished, and the second (a burger with fries) was still missing. After flagging down staff, they said our order had accidentally gone to someone else and a new one was coming. When it finally did, it came without fries. We asked again, and an entirely different staff member came out and confusingly said they might or might not be coming as they are backed up--but regardless they won't charge us for fries. We started eating our burger, wondering if they fries were still coming or not as he wasn't very clear or sure. We never got the fries, and when we got the bill, we were charged for fries... To their credit, the server apologized a lot and offered free drinks and an extra dessert, and they ended up comping one entrée and removing the fries charge (after I had to go inside again to ask). Food-wise: - Miso salmon was excellent--flavorful and beautifully charred. - Chicken sandwich was average, but a little skimpy on the chicken. - Crudo was too salty--overpowered by soy sauce. - Ice cream was solid! The team tried to make things right at the end, and I appreciate that--but I was pretty disappointed in how infrequent they checked up on us, the unclear communication, and how many times I had to get up from my seat to find them. I hate giving this place 3 stars... they were probably just having an off day.

Yelp
What an excellent addition to the neighborhood! Located in the heart of Virgil Village, the outdoor patio (which is super dog friendly) has a very European feel to it which makes you want to stay longer while enjoying great wine and a menu that offers something for even the most picky LA eater. BLUEFIN TUNA SASHIMI - 5 stars! This was served with a tasty garlic sauce that was bursting with flavor and was the perfect way to start the meal! CHILLED SESAME NOODLES - 5+ stars. This was served with Tofu (which I don't love in general) but the noodles were rich in flavor and the texture was perfect. I'm still dreaming about this dish! SUMMER SQUASH - 3 1/2 stars. This was good, but a tiny portion and not as interesting as the other dishes that we had. A little basic, but not bad in any way. SKIRT STEAK SKEWER - 5+ stars. Favorite item of the night! This is cooked perfectly, the seasoning on the steak was insanely good, and the portion was huge! I WANT MORE OF THIS!! WILD MISO SALMON w GREEN SALAD - 4 1/2 stars. The salad portion was huge and quite tasty, and the miso salmon was also quite good. I personally could have handled a little more of the miso flavor, though the salmon was cooked perfectly! Our waiter, TJ, was excellent! He was patient with me trying to catch a wine buzz before ordering dinner and was always there when we needed him. We had a 6:15p reservation and by 7:00p the outdoor patio was packed! I can't wait to come back and try the rest of the menu!

Yelp
Doto has opened up in the former Jewel space, and I decided to check it out during both daytime and dinner service. I did not have trouble finding street parking in the neighborhood, and it was easy both times I visited to get a table without a reservation. I appreciated the menu recommendations from the restaurant employee during my dinner, and I ended up getting the pan con tomate as an appetizer followed by the toriko fried chicken (with a side of rice) as my entree. The pan con tomate was small but tasty with a hefty covering of anchovies, and I could see my the fried chicken was described as their version of orange chicken; there was a balanced sweetness from the honey that I enjoyed. When I came back during a weekday morning, I ordered a latte that was well-made. I also liked that they offered pastries from Sugarbloom Bakery though I ended up just sitting and enjoying my coffee for a bit.

Yelp
Plenty of street parking, although it's not in the best neighborhood. Came on a Friday night. They were pretty empty. We sat in the patio. The patio was really cool. There was fire pit where 2 people can sit next to and talk. The staff put a heat lamp next to us since it was a cold night. The staff were nice, they told us they opened 2 months ago. They don't serve whiskey yet, but they said they are in the process of getting their whiskey license. We got the Salmon Hand Roll for $11. It was one small hand roll and the seaweed wrapping was stiff. Would not order the hand roll again. We also got the Comte Burger for $20 plus $4 more for French fries. The burger was really good, but on the heavier side. The French fries were well done and went perfectly with the burger. Would get the Comte burger and fries again. We also got the Wild Miso Salmon for $28. The salmon was good, but the portion seemed small for the price you pay. Overall, would definitely come back again. But, next time we'll be back for Happy Hour and when they serve whiskey. Really enjoyed sitting next to the fire pit, so we'll request those seats next time.

Yelp
The newest trendy Silver Lake cafe. I visited Doto for brunch last Saturday with a group of girlfriends. The food was delicious and the service was excellent. The server checked on us regularly and made sure to bring plenty of condiments upon request. I ordered an iced matcha latte and the breakfast burrito. The matcha flavor was decent. The matcha to milk ratio was pretty good and comparable to an authentic Asian-owned tea cafe. I did ask for honey syrup to sweeten it. I was not a fan of the Oaxacan cheese in the breakfast burrito--mostly because I don't eat a lot of cheese, but also because I thought it tasted like Craft Singles. Two other friends also ordered the burrito and loved it, so what do I know? The sauce offering was an avocado shiso salsa as well as a macha salsa upon request. The salsa macha was excellent! It's rare to find that salsa served at a restaurant outside of Mexico, so this was a pleasant surprise! We sat on the patio on a very lovely, sunny day, shaded by two large umbrellas. The restrooms were really nice--a marker of a good restaurant. Prices are middle-tier; not expensive but not cheap. For comparison, their breakfast burrito is the same cost as the Famous Breakfast Burrito I regularly order from Millie's Cafe in the same neighborhood. Their menu is all over the place--a mix of Mexican, Japanese, and Middle Eastern fusion. It's a little too complicated for me. I would definitely bring a date or maybe an out-of-town guest here, but the flavors are too busy and complex for this to be my regular spot. I prefer cafes that specialize in one type of cuisine. It is really nice that they have coffee and pastries. I like the idea of possibly grabbing a coffee here and walking to Bellevue Park.

Yelp
Doto is a new hidden jewel on a mostly residential strip on Hoover St. There's both indoor and outdoor seating, street parking and a small parking lot. The patio is very cute, dotted with umbrellas and dog-friendly. Service was quick and friendly. My friend and I went for a quick lunch and shared a burger & fries, and started with the yellowtail crudo. The yellowtail was very fresh and the citrus component made it very bright. The burger was over cooked, but the fries were the perfect crispy skinny fry. The rest of the menu looks really inviting and I will be returning since Doto is fairly close to where I live.

Kara F.

Yelp
A great neighborhood spot! The patio is extremely cute & the waitstaff was very kind and attentive. I personally was really unimpressed with the quality of raw fish, especially considering the price. My friend and I split the crudo, I got hand rolls & she got the burger. She really enjoyed the burger so maybe stick to the cooked food. The salted caramel ice cream was decedent and delicious. I don't think I will be back, but I enjoyed the experience nonetheless.
google avatar

Chris L.

Yelp
Perfect spot during a nice sunny day! The food was tasty, but extremely expensive. It's worth it to enjoy the charming patio, but would only return if there's a happy hour. The glasses of wine range around $14 which is painfully high. A burger should always come with fries, but they charge $4 more a burger that's already $20 which is absolutely insane. The bento boxes were $23, but tasted great and done well The breakfast patty melt (15) was standard and filling. No hot sauce, but they're working on it. Definitely a spot to check out for a special occasion because it's going to brake the bank. No kitchen fee / health care fee thankfully. I'm sure they take care of their staff with these prices.

Yelp
Nice day to sit out in the patio for this new spot to grab lunch with a girlfriend. We had a hard time deciding between the fried chicken and cheeseburger, but it was decided for us when the burger was sold out! We also grabbed the breakfast burrito and salad with fennel, dates and walnuts that now seems to be gone from the menu. Burrito still had crispy bacon and was very all around, even if there was too much tortilla to filling to my liking. The salad was super refreshing and filling; the fried chicken was the star with slight citrus glaze from the cara cara and some of the lightest fry ever. More akin to a karaage than fried chicken. A little bit slow on food service, but they were just open for a month when we dined in. We'll have to be back for the cheeseburger + coffee & pastries!
google avatar

Brian D.

Yelp
Food- The food was flavorful we had the fish tacos that come in 2 and we're fresh and flavorful, the bento box was delicious and the steak was great. I finished my meal with a citrus salad which was the best way to fishing the meal it was light, juicy and had a little kick to it amazing. Drinks came out fast and were good. Ambiance- It's a nice spot with two different back patios, music was nice and peaceful. Very photogenic places inside and out to take nice pictures. Nice place for it to be two months open. Came during the day but would love to come back during the night Service- The service was amazing our server was great and had amazing hospitality and took great care of us always checking how everything was and always aware. ( Ari thank you)

Jeremy S.

Yelp
Pros -bento box is super delicious -the salmon was cooked perfectly -the pickled vegetables and salad really complemented the fish Cons -parking is street only and limited Rating 8.5/10

Yelp
My friend and I had such a lovely time at Doto for brunch today. I liked Jewel, but I think I may love Doto! The fried chicken sandwich was incredible. I got the salad with it (instead of fries). You know how you never know what to expect with the side salad? Sure, I was prepared for some sad wilted greens BUT this salad was beyond fantastic. Super flavorful and refreshing. My friend, however, did get the fries and they got a rave review as well. The service was also fantastic. The servers were very attentive. They also let us linger and enjoy our wine, which is often a rare treat. I can't wait to return for happy hour!

Yelp
Inside was cute and had good vibes. Food was great. Loved the crudo and scallops!! Service was also great!
google avatar

Gennefer G.

Yelp
I am so happy I found Doto, a warm and welcoming new spot in East Hollywood with a chill vibe and off the charts food. From freshly sourced standouts like the yellowtail crudo to their epic grass-fed burger, the food alone is worth a visit but the hospitality will keep you coming back. Tom, the owner, has created an atmosphere where you instantly feel like longtime friends with generous pours of wine, top notch service, and family-friendly nights of comedy and vinyl on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. The epitome of a neighborhood gem, you'll find me on their charming patio often, chatting with the staff and fellow diners like we're all at a backyard hang.

Yelp
The vibe of this place is cute and small. Very local to Silverlake with a parking lot a plenty street parking. the music vibe is super fire and they have vinyls on display. The FOOD tho, is great. Strongly recommend the chicken sandwich. It's super flavorful and almost like Mediterranean and spicy and flavorful. The burger has so much flavor too. Super good. We added bacon which was a huge plus. Strongly recommend. The aioli and flavors are great. The patty melt is also good. Everything very fresh I strongly recommend! The service is also great, servers are very appreciative and made excellent recommendations . UPDATE: They also gave us desert for being so nice 10/10 service. Strongly recommend and love the friendly staff

Sheryl L.

Yelp

Yelp
LOVE THIS PLACE!!!! Every server is so kind and awesome, vibe is always great. Food is delicious. As an LA native, would highly recommend to anyone.

Yelp
Doto is an off-the-charts delicious new restaurant in Virgil Village (near Silver Lake), taking the culinary scene in this thriving neighborhood to a soaring new level, all the while housed in a cozy-casual ambience that exudes welcome and cheerfulness. Their hours are generous: you can stop in for a morning matcha with croissant, an early work lunch (the salads are crisp and dressed to bracing acidity), a late afternoon indulgent "linner" (try the fried chicken sandwich), or a luxurious dinner paired with excellent wine. Notably, every single dish coming out of the chef's kitchen -- from sensual appetizers to perfectly grilled lamb pita to the pollen-dusted marionberry ice cream that I still think about -- is so memorably constructed and thoughtfully cooked, you know someone put a pedigreed chef's expertise and homecooking love into these meals. I can't say enough good things about the elevated yet comforting style of cooking here, and Doto perfectly complements the other crown jewel of Virgil Village, Budonoki down the street. I highly recommend you come to Doto for all meals of the day -- it is a restaurant I would eat at every day if I could.
google avatar

Narine N.

Yelp
This place is such a neighborhood vibe! The inside is super stylish, the patio is one of the best in silverlake and the staff are the nicest you'll meet! The food was exceptional: recommending the fried chicken sandwich, the lamb and the oysters.
google avatar

Kate K.

Yelp
We used to go to Jewel all the time, and just recently saw that Doto was now in the space. I met a friend there with my toddler, and the staff was so welcoming and wonderful. They were especially gracious with my toddler, who was being... a toddler. Mushroom breakfast burrito was amazing. Love the laid back atmosphere and it wasn't too crowded on a Sunday morning. We will be back!

Steph C.

Yelp
Food Review: Doto Wow, Doto is fantastic! The chicken sandwich is an A+++++ must-try, and the Breakfast Patty Melt is a game-changer. If you want something traditional, the burger is amazing too. I can't wait to go back and try more! Go check out Doto!
google avatar

Angel C.

Yelp
The breakfast burrito had a lot of sauce and chunky bits of bacon. The place was freshly painted and a carpenter left his mark here. The bathrooms were clean and black toilets / urinals. The wine was in display and the bartender has her album disk in display.
google avatar

Olivia L.

Yelp
Our server TJ was the best! Everything was delicious. LOVED the salmon hand roll and mushrooms. Loved the relax vibe of the place. Perfect place to grab a summer dinner outside!

Stephanie P.

Yelp
Dinner: Food was amazing! 10/10 delicious. Not a bad thing to say at all. Service: I'm not a picky person and less concerned because they are a new place. But I made a reservation for the main dining room and we even showed up early. We wound up being placed in a very TIGHT corner seat outside (was fairly cold even with heaters). My husband's main dish came out nearly 20-25 minutes before mine, and we seemed to be forgotten about a few times. Also note! The menu is based on availability and what they have so it differed slightly from their website. Don't get your heart set on something before you show up haha Overall, I would come back just for the wine & food. I hope they get the dinner service kinks worked out soon! Would be a 5/5+

Suzy S.

Yelp
What a great restaurant! Blown away by pretty much everything, from their patio to the chef to the staff. Go there as fast as you can! The patio is the kind of place you could sit all day, peaceful and relaxing, with birds and trees and some cute dogs. Nice people too, Ari the manager came to talk to us, and brought the chef out to meet us, both of them were charming and welcoming. And then the food. Hands down the best burger I ever had, and I've had a few! Melts in your mouth and full of flavor, I mentioned to the waitress that it was totally addictive, and she told me everybody that worked there was trying not to make it a daily habit, they are hard to resist . Unlike most burgers that use American cheese, the chef uses compte', which adds a lot to the taste, along with the homemade potato bun and grilled onions. We also had their bento box, with perfectly cooked fish and some nice sides. Also a ten out of ten. I don't think they can go wrong. Cant wait to go back for another round next week. Perfect neighborhood restaurant, but also totally worth our 40 minute drive, we'll be back next week to try something else on the menu, although I think we might have to have another burger!
google avatar

Vincent B.

Yelp
The wonderful Jewel restaurant sadly is no more but it's been replaced by another gem -- Doto, which in Japanese means a sea slug (they're more beautiful than they sound) and in Latin a sea goddess, and which perfectly expresses the Western/Eastern-style cuisine. My favorite is the Spanish Tortilla, which is an omelet not a taco. Open breakfast thru dinner with a happy hour wine bar from 3-5. Prices are very reasonable and the ambience is casual and comfortable with spacious indoor and outdoor seating. Off the beaten track but we'll worth the trek!
google avatar

Jonathan B.

Yelp
Great place to go. It's Japanese and world cuisine. Cool patio delicious small plates bonus tip - - if you abandon your car across the street (dont drive tipsy!) there js plenty of free parking -- you can come back in the morning. You might even meet Jared very nice chef.. Recommend the Santa Barbara Pinot Noir, the asparagus, and the hand rolls.
google avatar

Lonnie A.

Yelp
Love the atmosphere and the servers were very nice. Our favorite was bento box and the macha. Plenty of free parking. We are definitely going back.

Adam S.

Yelp
Really good. Been 3 times already. The breakfast mushroom burrito is sooo good. My wife had the tortilla which was like a Spanish frittata which was really yummy. We came back for lunch per the waiters recommendation and ordered the bento box.... That was to die for. That will be calling me in my sleep! I'll be back again and again.

Sophie L.

Yelp
TJ was amazing! So sweet and accommodating (the whole staff was) such a cute spot with affordable drinks and great music! Will be coming back

Lalu J.

Yelp
"welcome back!" - a refrain i hear continually since this gem of a restaurant popped up in my neighborhood. quality food, warm and professional staff, and an all around great casual dining experience with michelin-star dining quality. this place is Virgil Villages best kept secret. it's no wonder people keep coming back. get the lamb pita!!

Jackson B.

Yelp
I really liked this place--the service, the ambiance, the food. What I didn't like was the apparent no free refill policy on iced tea that I did not find out about until I paid my check which is why this is a 4 star vs. 5 star review. The iced tea was already overpriced ($5) for a (thin, tall) collins glass that was filled with large ice cubes and about 4 oz of iced tea (max) that did not come with a lemon. I certainly wasn't planning to spend $10 on 8 oz of iced tea when I walked in. I understand charging for a refill in a coffee shop, but not for a dine in customer ordering from the food menu. That information needs to be explicitly stated on the food menu.

Rahm R.

Yelp
The service is good, but the food was nothing special. Every dish is covered in sauce. Sauce to me equals disguise, especially with meat. I ordered the steak frites and the steak was floating in an unappetizing sauce and served cold. It was inedible to me. I was so grossed out, that I had to spit it out. Cold, chewy, covered in sauce. Yikes! Just did not taste ok at all.

Alexander E.

Yelp
Just had the best dinner of my life at Doto. Came in for the burger I normally get but decided to do smthn different. Had the salmon handroll first, it was delicious then I ate the scallop skewers and I literally think it was the best scallop of my life. I got oysters and they were incredible (put the mignonette on them but they definitely didn't need it). Last dish was the absolute best dish... octopus skewers. Holy crap it changed my life. So tender with just enough resistance to remind me it was octopus and I don't even have words for the briny but sweet flavor of it all. Overall great great great

Lilit N.

Yelp
My family and I recently had brunch at Doto and we absolutely loved it. The moment we stepped in, we were greeted by a warm, inviting atmosphere. We sat in the patio which was super cozy but they also have indoor seating. The iced coffee was delicious and refreshing. We had the breakfast burrito, the Spanish omelet, and the yogurt. Everything tasted great and the service was excellent. Can't wait to come back!

Nicole M.

Yelp
Great food, awesome service, outside seating delivers a great vibe. Extremely clean. Happened upon this establishment as a local recommendation. Awesome quaint experience with delicious food.

Angie G.

Yelp
This is such a great neighborhood spot. Staff were so friendly, the wine selection is varied and interesting and the food was delicious. I had the char sui pork which was tender and flavorful. Can't wait to try more dishes next time.
